hello and welcome to learn English with Jojo for this video I'm going to give you 10 Yiddish words that we use in English and specifically in American English so the first example I have for you is schmutz schmutz and the example is Joey you have some schmutz on your face and that is my impression of a Jewish mother my own mother doesn't really speak like that but schmutz is a little bit of dirt usually on your face or your shirt the next word is foot spot and in Yiddish and Hebrew you have two for the ch words you have to go kind of like you're coughing up some phlegm foot spa foot spa it's a little bit difficult to say but it means someone with a lot of confidence maybe a little bit too much confidence I would say that guy has a lot of hoods but to be asking that girl out because you need confidence to ask someone out the next one is or evei and this one I use personally every day not every day maybe once in a while but it's one I really like to say Oy Vey it just has a better it sounds better than oh no that's basically what it means oh no oh eh it's kind of more exasperated you're more tired of what you're reacting to oh they not again something like that yeah the next one is chachki and that's just something little that you would find at a dollar store or an antique shop just little things that you pick up for a dollar or maybe they're expensive I don't know mom why do you have so many tchotchkes all around the house the next word is slap and it's a verb it means to carry or to travel and it's a burden I slept all the way to New York last weekend which means I had to go all the way to New York and it was it was kind of a burden or i would say i schlepped my suitcases all across paris the other week the next one is schmuck and this one means basically a jerk or an and I think the actual definition in Yiddish is a penis so you're being a dick if you're a schmuck it's kind of if someone has a lower stand now like they never try very hard they're not a great person they're a little bit lazy they're schmuck and the next one is a spiel or it can also be pronounced spiel because this word exists in German as well as Yiddish Yiddish has a lot of words that are in Hebrew and German and some that are mixed up between the two anyway spiel is how I say it and it is basically a long-winded speech it could be a sales pitch I'm going to give you my spiel about the initial angle it's something I've practiced something that I kind of say all the time although I've never made a video like this or really talked about this subject so it's not really a spiel the next word is stick and stick is something that you are known for usually to entertain the comedian gave his shtick about airline food the other day and it was and it was meant and to finish off this list we have Mazel Tov and Mazel tub is actually a Yiddish word that exists in Hebrew it was taken into modern Hebrew by Yiddish people and it means congratulations it actually means good luck so it's congratulations on what just happened and I wish you luck in the future so that it can happen again and I would say Mazel Tov on your promotion so that's my list of Yiddish words that we use in American English I hope that was interesting to you let me know in the comments if you've heard any of those words before if you have any examples of other words they're yesh in the English language please let me know there are a few others I didn't mention that or use pretty often so that's it have a good day Shalom
