10 Tricks for AMAZING Vocal Production

right now that's out the way you ready to do this i'm ready you ready let's go let's start from the first verse okay top of the track and while you record i'm gonna use the r channel play with the eq shape out with the compression and we'll lay a foundation for your vocal [Music] okay let's try to widen it out as the music gets more intense what do you say all right i'm going to open a doubler plugin while you're recording real time [Music] do you remember the session that you did with the last guy with the pitch thing vocal bender yeah i got you that's right let's record in real time while you're while you're in the zone let's go [Music] no i got an idea now okay what i typically do i might copy and paste a word for a little pitch effect but i think we can do it in real time we say you're up for it that's what we're gonna do can i hear an example like what do you mean hit me with the verse i'll show you i know it's hard to say resist trying to fight it fighting [Music] miserably [Music] just before we get going though i gotta ask you you're you're a great singer you can clearly sing you sing phenomenal but how do you feel about plugins like auto tune pitch correction things like that listen i don't have any problem with autotune okay do whatever you need to make it sound good okay let's go let's take it again i'm going to have you sing right into waves tune i'm going to explain why after you're done ready let's go [Music] all right the attitude on point thank you the vibe perfect yes the pitch not perfect i can do it again i can do it again hold on hold on i already fixed it check it out all i had to do you weren't too far off so i just knocked it right onto the scale like that on waves tune now let's hear it back check it out [Music] right now we tried the natural thing with the autotune can we play with it a little bit you know yeah i know what you mean okay okay on the rap side i want to do a verse oh you're gonna spit a verse yeah i'm gonna try okay let's go i'm gonna pull up waves tune real time okay we're gonna do this real time ready i'm ready hit [Music] tell me it's sick i love it let's stack that though stack that let's stack that okay i'm with you but only at that part the part where you say why don't you get close to lighten it up and make a wish okay let's put a harmony right there [Music] now one thing i'm starting to notice where layering takes those breaths they're starting to build up you've been trying to keep your distance from me darling just breathe what i typically do is i go and edit out each breath you know cut and edit the vocal jar fade but instead of you sitting here wasting time let me just put deep breath on and what it's going to do is i'm going to set it to automatically reduce pretty much remove all the breaths in the vocals set it up like that it separates the breath from the vocals and now we get this you've been trying to keep your distance from me darling just breathe let's get more spaced out with it i got an idea let's let's do something with the overdubs space them out i'm gonna put vocoder on it okay what do you say i'm with you i've got ovox open here now it can do two things i can play it in real time let me hear you can either do that yeah or i can just take the chords from the track itself copy and paste it send it to obox and it does all the work for me ready to try it out yeah let's try it let's do it [Music] that's amazing the vocoder that's ovox but wait can you change my voice into an instrument like any instrument what you got in mind i think bass check this out i'm gonna open ovox got a preset called bass liner wow so let's line up the track with a mouse bass line what do you say let's go give me a mic check let me hear you let's lace it up like that let's do it that's crazy we're keeping that yeah keeping that let's keep getting spaced out with it okay i heard you got raised a little bit are you can you sing opera a little bit okay okay fifth element come on that's the class there we go fifth element that scene where the alien is in the opera house yes yes do you want to try it let's record something like that with ovox and then in real time i'm going to bring in a little sequence and it's going to be dope you ready i'm ready let's go [Music] all right so a couple things i'm noticing off the bat what's that all the vocal takes we're starting to build up on some harshness the s is right yep so what i'm gonna do is i'm gonna open for the sibilance i know it's hard to resist you're trying to fight it miss ripley you've been trying to keep your distance from me darling just free oh we're good to go so i'm hearing something like my main vocal getting lost and all the other vocals can we do something about it the lead right yeah yeah yeah i know what you mean yep real quick i'm going to take it insert the r box and i'm going to put it on just the lead now we got to do it's a real simple plug-in super quick bring down the comp control that's going to give it a lot more presence all right let's get that back [Music] all right you see we got just the right amount of compression without it sounding too squashed sounds good but still i can hear my voice getting buried you know where the course comes in let's check that out [Music] you can handle that in the bundle we've got a plug-in called vocal rider now vocal rider we're just going to insert it on the vocals and it's automatically going to ride the vocal and keep it on top of the music the whole time so real quick i'm just going to adjust the sensitivity all right then we're going to bring the range down all right and now when that chorus kicks in the vocal is going to sit on top the entire time [Music] all right guys well there you go 10 vocal production tricks
