Eddie Murphy is the chosen one to fight off the supernatural forces of evil and save the world all while being as hilarious as ever in 1986 Murphy played Chandler Jarrell a private detective who searches for lost children and one day Chandler is approached by the mysteriously Naing who tells him he is the chosen one and that he must go to Tibet to save the golden child the golden child is a mystical being from the Himalayas who will bring peace and stability to the universe who gets kidnapped by an evil demon called sardo numspa played by Charles Doug's Chandler must go on an adventure which takes him from the streets of LA to Nepal in order to save the golden child and defeat the monsters that want to bring chaos into the world in this very enjoyable movie that mixes comedy with fantasy which is carried by the unstoppable charisma of Eddie Murphy so today we are going to search for the ajahn T dagger by exploring ten things that you didn't know about this insanely underrated movie the golden child so let's check it out [Music] you [Music] what the nave any mask again I want the knife number ten the golden child was meant to be a serious movie the golden child continues the supernatural comedy genre style that Ghostbusters made popular two years earlier as it mixes monsters and horror with Eddie Murphy's energetic and fast-paced wit and charm which he had also previously given us with Beverly Hills Cop two years earlier however originally the golden child was going to be played less for Laughs and more for serious thrills the original script was written by photographer Dennis Feldman who previously wrote the teen comedy just one of the guys originally the script was called The Rose of Tibet's and was to pay homage to Raymond Chandler stories hence the main character's name Chandler Jarrell Chandler wrote a lot of detective stories and pulp comics so the golden child or rather the rose of Tibet was probably originally envisioned to be a sort of pulp noir romp with supernatural elements editor [Music] number nine it could have been a John Carpenter movie starring Mel Gibson there was a bidding war to obtain the Rose of Tibet script of which Paramount Pictures won the bidding of the production company offered horror director John Carpenter to direct but he turned it down to direct the similar movie Big Trouble in Little China instead both movies are similar in that they both focus on Chinese mythology's while mixing comedy with the supernatural there are even talks of Mad Max director George Miller directing the movie at one stage as Eddie Murphy was a fan of his work Bad News Bears director Michael Richie was hired to direct the movie which was now called the golden child one year earlier Richie had success with the Chevy Chase vehicle Fletch it was originally envisioned to have Mel Gibson star as the movie's main heroic leader but Eddie Murphy was becoming a big name for Paramount Pictures at the time having starred in three successful movies for the company Paramount Pictures had a stack of scripts put aside for Murphy for him to potentially star in and the golden child is the script out of 20 that stood out to the actor while he was going through the scripts and thus he was cast John Carpenter would go on to say that the golden child has issues with its script but the one big advantage had over Big Trouble in Little China was Eddie Murphy number eight other casting talents there was apparently a worldwide hunt to find the right actress to play kee Nang the wise and powerful mystical hero who teams up with the Jarell character apparently scouting for the role took place in Hollywood London Hong Kong and Bombay however 18 year old British actress Charlotte Lewis was cast the golden child was played by former child actress JL reads yes despite the character being a boy he was played by a young actress she does a good job and has a lot of sincerity despite not speaking for at the movie since the golden child she has never acted again one of the bikie gang members was played by Eric Douglas Michael Douglas's Bravo / Kirk Douglas as son Victor Wong played the rude and crude monk and James Hong played dr. Hong the irony being both wong and hong would also star in the golden child's rival movie Big Trouble in Little China and of course the main villain Soto numspa was played by British actor Charles dance dance had previously played a [ __ ] in the Bond film for your eyes only as well as starring in the war movie drama plenty and the golden child was his big break he plays the evil British stereotype but also does it with such glare the voice of the evil thing being was provided by legendary voice artist Frank Welker who also that very year voice tres dance and Slimer in the Real Ghostbusters animated series and the demonic voice that Welker provides for the golden child is damn near identical to the one he would provide for the devil in the spawn movie which came out over ten years later number seven filming location despite being set in the pond with a huge chunk of the movie taking place there the movie actually wasn't film there isn't that weird a movie in which Nepal is such a huge part of the film wasn't actually filmed there okay well that's not necessarily true as some location footage was filmed by a second unit team however all the scenes involving the actors was filmed at a ski mountain location in Mammoth Lakes California watching these scenes I never would have guessed that this was actually filmed in California so kudos to them for pulling that off along with other filming being shot on sound stages in Paramount Studios Los Angeles and to be honest all the sets are pretty good I always found the scenes in the marketplace to be pretty authentic and always assumed it was filmed at the actual location the power of movie magic number six a Bond composer left the project although back to the future composer Alan Silvestri was originally approached to score the golden child it was legendary James Bond composer John Barry who came on board to score the movie Barry was also a very successful composer in his own right outside of the Bond movies scoring films like Midnight Cowboy somewhere in time and Out of Africa well with his affinity for action drama and excitement and emotional themes Barry would have seemed ideal for an adventure score like the golden child however Barry's score ended up getting replaced a screen test audience felt the school at the movie down and felt somewhat out of place so French composer Michelle Colombia was brought on board to compose an entirely new score which now had more of a fun simple sale however some of Barry's score was actually still used in the movie namely the Nepal scenes and his music honestly sounds beautiful and epic really the producers got the best of both worlds they got Columbia's more comical pop music for the more fun scenes and Barry's more in-depth and emotional score for the more emotional scenes which is perfectly fine with Mayer and the fact that John Barry got replaced is not a reflection on Barry's talents as heck the same thing happened to Jerry Goldsmith when he scored the 1995 Judge Dredd movie number five special effects of the golden child the golden child is a movie of which it's lengthy post-production was still having things added and taken out of the movie even until mere days of the movie's release this also includes the movie special effects the special effects of the golden child were provided by Industrial Light and Magic and if you watch the golden child objectively to the time it was made in the effects were actually pretty groundbreaking for when it was made and retrospectively you can see that the movies effects were progressing and evolving to make way for movies like Terminator 2 and Jurassic Park in fact some of the visual effects particularly the dancing coke can was created by experimental technology Industrial Light and Magic were working on for the movie Who Framed Roger Rabbit which was also in production at that time so the effects for the golden child were made possible because ILM were experimenting with new technology for Who Framed Roger Rabbit crazy huh number four the John Alvin poster I always loved the movie poster for the golden child I can still remember seeing it for the first time on a VHS cover in a video store and the use of red and pinks and purples really hit a chord with me and the awesome illustration of Eddie Murphy just completes it it kind of looks like an Indiana Jones movie starring Eddie Murphy you get the feeling that an epic adventure will ensue you the poster was drawn by John Alvin whom has put together other classic movie posters such as Blazing Saddles Blade Runner et the extra-terrestrial gremlins The Goonies and Batman Returns his work is honestly amazing there were different posters for different parts of the world like this tie one which actually adds more detail including the movies villain sardo numspa this Japanese poster is pretty basic going from much more of a fiery approach whilst also making the golden child look much more like a serious movie I mean look at Murphy's face here he looks like he's got no time to muck around and put up with anyone's crap today I also found this poster which also looks amazing this I believe was a John Alvin poster that wasn't actually used but even though this one was rejected and I do prefer the other one better I can still really appreciate it for its artistry and just how great it looks the most bizarre golden child movie poster is this polish one which is just weird and doesn't look like anything from the movie where we have this bird which I think is supposed to be the bird from the movie which seems to be doing a radioactive crap on some guy's forehead I don't know who this is meant to be the Chandler character sardo numspa I don't know I've got to admit I like how the two buildings become the devil's horns but personally I don't remember seeing a red eyed green skinned devil stereotyped character in the golden child unless Poland got a cut of the movie that I never saw number 3 novelization a novelization of the golden child was published and written by Alfred George seed Chesbrough the novelization is more faithful to the earlier script of the movie so it's a lot more darker and serious than the film and many of Murphy's funny lines that he gave to the movie are absent from the novel more explanation is also given to the characters motivations for out the novel from reviews that I've read online the novel doesn't really add anything drastically new and plays pretty much the same as the movie although most of the reviews agree that the channeler character doesn't feel like eddie murphy one review on Goodreads com noted that the irony being that Murphy himself is on the cover like as in he takes up most of the covers space one reviewer on Amazon even said they preferred the novel to the movie so personally I'll be interested to read it number two last minute laughs so as mentioned the golden child was a movie that was having cuts and changes being made so it even really far late into the movies post-production it was felt that the movie despite originally being a serious action movie was still too serious and not living up to the eddie murphy standards of comedy gold that people had come to expect from movies like Trading Places and Beverly Hills Cop so some more jokes and humor scenes were filmed and inserted into the movie in order to give it that extra comedy flower no idea who I am have you yes yes or no no I don't know which jokes were always there or which ones were added in post but I always felt that Eddie Murphy was pretty funny in the golden child and that he gives one fine performance and controversial opinion here but I think he's comedic timing and energy in the golden child is just as good as it was in Beverly Hills Cop and even though some may not agree that's okay but I'll still stand by it so yeah maybe adding those jokes at the last minute made the golden child a better movie number one Paramount Pictures were disappointed because they wanted Beverly Hills Cop levels of success [Music] the golden child was released in December 1986 and Paramount Pictures had high hopes for the golden child anticipating it to be another huge success of Beverly Hills Cop levels when Beverly Hills Cop came out two years earlier and made over 300 million dollars in the box office however the golden child only made 79 million domestically which is tiny compared to Beverly Hills Cop however what has to be taken into account his Beverly Hills Cop was a mega hit and giving the golden child's budget of 25 million dollars it's still very impressive and it was the eighth highest-grossing movie of 1986 the critics pretty much compared the movie to Beverly Hills Cop which is unfair as despite starring Eddie Murphy they are two completely different movies even Eddie Murphy himself were going to call the golden child a piece of [ __ ] and Charles dance said although he enjoyed working on the movie and working with Eddie Murphy it wasn't a very good film however not only could the golden child not escape the shadow of Beverly Hills Cop but also Big Trouble in Little China sir a similar movie that came out the same year which was directed by John Carpenter as mentioned Carpenter said that he raced to get Big Trouble in Little China out before the golden child with it coming out in July although the golden child still made more box-office dollars than Big Trouble in Little China it still got compared to its similarities which to me makes me wonder if the golden child would have done better had that come out first despite how much money it made or which movie came out first I think the golden child is a very underrated movie and I find it to be perfectly enjoyable and funny and I think it's a shame that it never reached its full potential it's a good film and it's totally just about time to give it another viewing you won't be disappointed I think that underrated is definitely the word that pops into mind when talking about the golden child the best way to watch it is rather than compare it to Beverly Hills Cop or Big Trouble in Little China just watch it as its own movie which I can get more than deserves so please I cannot recommend this movie enough give it another viewing anyway I'm in T and this week I went to the supernova kin in Melbourne where I met a fan and
