[Music] everyone loves a hero who never gives up in the face of adversity who never backs down no matter what the world throws at them well sometimes the world has other plans whether because a different writer has a different idea for how the characters should progress or generally work or because certain events are just that shaking some superheroes feel it's best to just throw in the towel sometimes they come back and sometimes they stay gone for good and these moments can be built up over years to the point where you're just counting down the days until they throw in the towel or in the case of this list they come out of nowhere and leave you utterly flawed I'm will for what culture and here are 10 shocking times superheroes just quit number 10 Superman Superman 20 96 to 2099 in Superman 20 96 Clark starts noticing an anomaly whenever he changes into his Clark Kent persona he loses his powers completely he decides to test the theory by straight-up abandoning the Superman identity altogether and becoming Clark Kent permanently even managing to finally work out a serious relationship with Lois Lane that lasted long after this story ended Superman even goes so far as to ignore someone in trouble because the police are already on the way to have it handled but of course the big lovable Boy Scout can't stay away forever gets the anomaly worked out but at least gets to keep his relationship with Lois number 9 Captain America Captain America 175 what does Captain America do when he can no longer believe in America this is the conflict Steve faced in Captain America 175 when constant head-butting with the American government finally came to a head upon learning that the leader of the criminal cabal known as the secret Empire was none other than the President himself his idealism shattered along with his belief in the system he had dedicated his life to defending camp made one of the ballsiest moves in the characters entire history threw away his shield and quit being Captain America altogether he tried to retire with his girlfriend Sharon but of course found that he just couldn't stay away while others were in peril but he still didn't want to adopt the Captain America mantle again so he created a new title nomads the man without a country this stood a lot longer than you'd think it would to the point where while he's never expressly called nomads in infinity war Chris Evans his new suit in that movie eerily resembles his original Nomad outfit number 8 the specter Jim Corrigan the specter is one of the most fascinating characters in the entire DC canon starting out as the ghost of a detective who solves murders in the Golden Age the spectre was revealed to in fact be the literal wrath of God sent to bring punishments to the guilty as such it doesn't really need Jim Corrigan and can move to whatever host it wishes so it was in The Spectre series from 1992 that Jim Corrigan would be retired as the host of The Spectre throughout the series facing many great challenges including finally confronting the man who murdered him in the first place Jim learns why he was chosen as the spectre to begin with not simply to smite evil but to understand it and himself by the end Jim comes to term with his anger at evil in the world and how it had its roots in his own abusive childhood with the peace he's found in death the spectre releases him to the afterlife but stays behind to find a new host number 7 Vale Avengers Academy as seen with the last entry not everyone who gives up being a superhero comes back sometimes when the creator's pull out the shocking oh my gosh this hero is giving up cards they really do mean it and sometimes you can't help but be in total agreement with one leaving which brings us nicely to Madeline Barrie aka Vale Madeline technically got her start in the event comic Marvel Dark Reign where she and several other teenagers were captured and experimented on with the intent of activating their powers through the pain and trauma these experiments caused after dark rain ended Maddie and the other kids were brought to Avengers Academy for training since the Avengers didn't feel confident about leaving a bunch of tortured traumatized teenagers alone with their thoughts now they had devastating superpowers Maddie went along with it for a while but eventually went to work for entrepreneur Jeremy Briggs who promised to cure her powers but was secretly using her as a prototype for his plan to depower all superheroes vales last adventure as a superhero was stopping that plan in its tracks before returning for good to her civilian life number six martian manhunter JLA 71 this is where readers were first introduced to the white Martians another race of Martians that had overrun and enslaved their green brethren a long time ago although John and the league emerged victorious in the end Mars is left uninhabitable as a result of the plan set in motion by blanks the white Martian leader John then shocks his friends by informing them he would set out with the remains of his people to help them find a new home although he would pop back up every now and then it would be 15 years before John returned to earth full-time number 5 Black Panther Black Panther 50 after some shenanigans involving a future version of T'Challa found in suspended animation T'Challa to the shock of everyone quit being the Black Panther in a bout of lost hope to the point where he gave away the suit to a New York detective named Casper Cole what was even more shocking though was how he came back because it turned out he never technically left having quit in some uber elaborate scheme to bring down the 66 bridges crime cartel it makes a lot more sense in context I swear the fact that Casper Cole was the Black Panther for a decently long time before T'Challa took the mantle back was a ballsy move on the part of the writers and really made readers wonder if T'Challa was really coming back or not number four Jack Nights star man well the 90s is mostly remembered as a dark time for comic books Marvel in particular the mid to late 90s was when DC really got its act together it's insane the amount of consistency of great stories that came out of this period including one James Robinson's star man the story centered around Jack Knight estranged son of the original star man who wanted nothing to do with the mantle since beating up bad guys doesn't exactly do much for the environment or world hunger but after fate leaves him with little choice in the matter jack takes up the mantle once more and is way better at it than he thought he'd be however by the end Jack is understandably pretty tired by the whole thing and on top of that he'd just had a baby with his girlfriend after some well-needed soul-searching Jack performs some final acts of heroism to tie up any loose ends and make sure he leaves ople city safer than it was when he started even straight up giving away the cosmic staff to his protege Courtney Whitmore who bears the mantle of star girl to this day number three MS Marvel Avengers 200 in the realm of superheroes quitting out of nowhere this is one of the most infamous examples mostly in fact primarily because of its utterly creepy subject matter the gist of it is that Ms Marvel has mysteriously gotten pregnant once the pregnancy occurs though it turns out to actually be Carroll's interdimensional husband in air quotes who reincarnated himself into this dimension by impregnating Carol who along with the Avengers is inexplicably okay with this and rides off into the sunset with him shortly thereafter much later Carol came back having escaped her so-called husband Marcus as it turned out she was being brainwashed into being Marcus's wife just so he could enact an overly elaborate evil scheme but notably The Avengers were under no such effects Carol quits the Avengers quits being Miss Marvel for a while before joining up with the x-men all in all a growth story glorifying rape and unwanted pregnancy that only acknowledged his own gross masala 1 writer at Marvel who wasn't okay with this miraculously got to write Ms Marvel number 2 Wonder Woman Wonder Woman 179 like all of those classic superheroes there are plenty of moments throughout Wonder Woman's life where she straight-up gave up the superhero life but for this one we went for the most bizarre and jarring of them all it happened in Wonder Woman 179 wherein longtime love interest Steve Trevor started his campaign against crime Lord dr. cyber Diana of course offered to help but then a crisis emerged in the form of the Amazons needing to leave earth to recharge the magic they used to stay alive and hidden Wonder Woman chooses to stand with Steve and combat the threat of cyber so she stayed behind and thus lost all of her magic leaving her as simple Diana Prince also she lost all her years of combat training for some staggeringly stupid reason this new status quo wasn't exactly popular but that didn't stop DC from keeping things that way for five years number one spider-man spider-man 50 well this one pretty much had to be the top one didn't it Peters superhero life has always interfered with his normal one that's the entire crux of his character it was in issue number 50 when it all really came to a head for the first time fighting bad guys not only costs him a date with gwen stacy but it also starts seriously costing him his grades and if that weren't bad enough his aunt may fall seriously ill and because of a super villain fights he was unable to be there for her when she needed him the most add all that up with the icing on the cake of the Daily Bugle doing to spider-man what the bugle does best and the straw finally broke the camel's back Peter throws his suit in the trash and storms off in one of the most shocking and iconic images in comic book history and there you have it folks 10 shocking times superheroes just quits
