building a movie franchise that remains popular over the years or even decades is incredibly challenging and while these 10 movie franchises are mostly still going strong that doesn't mean they're perfect far from it in fact these franchises would all do well to finally toss out one nagging thing that's been lingering around for years despite so many fans calling for change from the overt recycling of Tire tropes to fan service that just doesn't work refusing to retire legacy cast members and basically being totally allergic to the idea of trying anything new with that in mind I'm Adam from what culture and here are 10 movie franchises that need to ditch one thing number 10 making fun of characters names the Marvel Cinematic Universe the Marvel Cinematic Universe has its fair share of issues for sure but there's one convention in particular that's massively outstand its welcome the fact that the MCU is so utterly embarrassed of its own characters names it's been a Trope since basically the beginning of the franchise that the silly sounding monikers of Heroes aren't villains alike get mocked by at least one character as if to note the audience and issue with them the writers know how ridiculous it all sounds the most infamous examples are surely Ant-Man Paul Rudd asking Hank Pym Michael Douglas if it's too late to change the name and Spider-Man Tom Holland discussing made-up names with Doctor Strange Benedict Cumberbatch in Avengers Infinity War the gag has been lazily regurgitated Ad nauseam throughout the MCU and even as recently as Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness the franchise seems objectively incapable of just letting characters have their comic book names without passing law effort comment on it at this point it feels more snarky than a one-liner that belongs in an MCU movie so gron worthy is this corny need to mock the very thing that's putting boots in seats in the first place it's not cute anymore it's Lim and irritating number nine the constant death fake outs the Fast and the Furious while there's no denying that the Fast and the Furious franchise is a glorified soap on Opera that just so happens to be centered around vehicular Carnage The filmmakers are really starting to wear the buck from the dead Trope down to the nub it was Daft enough when Letty Michelle Rodriguez was killed off in the fourth film Fast and Furious before Fast and Furious 6 retcon her demise complete with a telenovela worthy Amnesia Arc then Han sung Khan who perished in the third movie Tokyo Drift was revived a whole 15 years later in F9 his resurrection so outrageous that the movie basically skirted around properly explaining it and with numerous Insider reports stating that yet another clearly very Dead character is due to make their return in the upcoming fast X or fast 10 what was once amusingly silly has become lazy through repetition with the series already gossamer thin Sticks being awarded almost entirely if nobody stares dead then why care about anybody's well-being during the gravity defying set pieces really the series needs to tilt back in the other die Direction and kill off a major member of The Ensemble in an impactful way that actually sticks number eight all the Legacy characters Star Wars while we're stretching the definition of one thing a little here you know what the worst thing is about Star Wars its refusal to cut the past loose and just move the hell on divisive though it was with the fan base the rise of Skywalker felt like an empathic end to the Skywalker Saga offering a firm farewell to the legacy cast and potentially closing the book on rare dizzy Ridley Finn John boyega and poor Oscar Isaac too though there are a number of Star Wars movies currently in development most of which may or may not ever actually get made it's just a matter of time before Disney announces development on episodes 10 11 and 12 the best thing these movies could do draw a line under everything associated with the Skywalkers and give us a fresh collection of characters in a region of the Galaxy light years away from Tatooine of course Disney is allergic to the idea of a truly original Star Wars film I'm deathly afraid of any new characters who don't have a convoluted familial tie to the existing heroes and villains but it is sure a nice dream right number seven the terrible human subplots Sonic the Hedgehog to give the Sonic the Hedgehog movie some credit they at least got the most important part right Sonic after some post-production reworking is a fearful Recreation of his video game counterpart the human element was certainly less appealing in the first movie because honestly who really cares about the human protagonist Tom Wachowski James Marsden but at least it was deployed sparringly enough following the first film's success though the sequel bafflingly decided it needed to double down on the human subplots and so devoted an entire 15 minutes in the middle of the movie to the wedding of Mary's Tika Sumpter sister Rachel Natasha Rothwell in Hawaii at this point Sonic Ben Schwartz Tales Pauline O'Shaughnessy are Knuckles Idris Elba are pushed to the periphery for a quarter hour of blend and cutting room floor material that should have been trimmed down to a couple of minutes at most with Sonic the Hedgehog 3 currently in development for 2024 the filmmakers need to appreciate that not a single solitary Soul who appears to see a Sonic movie cares about any of this nonsense number 6. Jake Sully's dull narration Avatar nobody's going to call the screenplays to the Avatar movies masterful but they are shrewly effective in onboarding the audience to the world of Pandora and that's really what matters most James Cameron scripts for the first two Avatar movies both use plentiful voiceover narration from protagonist Jake Sully Sam Worthington aren't given that Worthington isn't exactly the most charismatic actor in the world it does come off as a rather dull delivery mechanism for such a technologically advanced pair of movies following the release of Avatar the way of water many fans expressed hope that Avatar 3 would pass the narrating bat on to another character and a few weeks later Cameron indeed confirmed that fans can expect a new narrator for the threequel Beyond stating that he was planning to fine-tune the movie in reaction to What fans enjoyed most about the second film he confirmed that Avatar 3 will be narrated instead by Jake's son loik Britain Dalton who memorably bonded with the Tolkien payakan throughout Avatar the way of water number five John Kramer saw there's no way this won't be controversial but John Kramer Tobin Bell is both the best and worst thing to ever happen to the saw franchise on one hand Crema was the fascinatingly motivated serial killer who headlined the original Three Saw movies before finally being killed off and on the other he's such a compelling antagonist that the series has struggled to disentangle itself from him ever since hell crimber appeared in the next five sequels despite being dead with extensive flashbacks being deployed to keep him in the periphery of the story before finally being absent from the ninth film spiral but with spiral's attempt to soft reboot the franchise falling flat it was recently announced that the upcoming saw 10 will see the return of Kramer yet again in what's said to be a mid quill set between the first two movies now as much as we love Tobin Bell and his superb performances Kramer there is clearly a ceiling to what the series can be while still hopelessly attached to this character played by a now 80 year old Bell no less much like the Terminator franchise sawfield Stuck in Neutral while it remains obsessed with bringing it all back to its original Star similar to Terminator which has now shown how creatively bankrupt It Is by refusing to move on from Arnold Schwarzenegger saw is such an evergreen concept for a horror franchise that it shouldn't be that difficult to reboot in an entertaining way and while it will be fun to see bellback as Crema once again after this the series really needs to find compelling New Blood to lead the charge number four lazy fan service Ghostbusters now to be fair everybody's definition and tolerance of fan service is very different what's affecting and genuine to one person feels cynical and unearned to another other but by far the most vocal complaint about Ghostbusters afterlife is that though unquestionably well-intentioned by writer director Jason Reitman the sequel used nostalgia-fueled fan service as far too much of a crutch it's a film which holds the iconography of the Ghostbusters franchise with Sanctified reverence as to become overwrought if not outright laughable this is a series about a group of very funny people hoovering up ghosts we don't need to give a jew-eyed emotional backbone by the time CGI Egon Harold Ramis shows up in the climax it feels like we're being manipulated to react emotionally to an entertainment product an exercise in brand extension rather than a more Earnest attempt to move the series on with a group of new Young Heroes and so the Ghostbusters afterlife sequel which Just Begun shooting desperately needs to train its focus on the likable new characters while keeping the OneNote references to the previous films and the inevitable Cameo from Legacy characters to a minimum it'd be foolish to expect the filmmakers to follow this advice ice of course but hopefully it'll at least feel a little less morkish and sentimental than its predecessor number three the Billy Loomis Visions Scream the recall era of the scream franchise may be very far from perfect but it's at least succeeded in doing what the sole franchise hasn't introducing fans to a likable and memorable quartet of new Heroes who can carry the series forward yet as great as the core 4 of Sam Melissa Barrera Tara Jenna Ortega Chad Mason Gooding and Mindy Jasmine Savoy Brown are there's one reoccurring element from the last two movies that just needs to go like now we're talking about Sam's goofy visions of her lit father Billy Loomis Skeet Ulrich throughout the last two movies Sam has encountered periodic visions of her father achieved with their garishly digitally DH Skeet Ulrich as he attempts to gourd her into giving into her most brutal Tendencies though the idea behind Sam's past is interesting enough externalizing it visually is a corny choice that she were to remind fans of the terrible visions of Sydney's Nev Campbell mother Maureen in Scream 3. didn't we establish how terrible this was back then apparently not it seems unlikely the idea will be ditched for the inevitable seventh movie but here's to hoping number two disfigured villains James Bond though the James Bond franchise largely thrives on its tropes there's one in particular that feels grotesquely tired in the modern era of 007 villains with disfigurements typically of the facial variety it's a Trope which goes back to the beginnings of the bond franchise there was surprisingly been most apparent of all throughout the recently concluded Daniel Craig era Casino Royale Hadler Chiefs mads Mickelson scarred I Skyfall had Silvers Javier Bardem mischief and fist due to a cyanide capsule Specter give blowfeld Kristoff Waltz a scarred eye and no time to die safin Rami Malek had a heavily scarred face this is a supremely outdated convention that by give given the villain an exterior oakliness it serves as a visual shorthand for their inner malevolence upholding an unfortunate stereotype that people with facial disfigurements are anything but normal and even if you don't find Bond's continued use of this troll personally offensive it is a rather old hat conceit in 2023 can we not be more creative with our villainous Aesthetics very few people would miss the facial disfigurement if it went away for the next era of bond so it's at least worth trying to give it a rest right number one Kenneth Branagh as director pyrol Kenneth Branagh absolutely kills it as Hercule poirur in his new series of Agatha Christie's adaptations but as a director eh on both murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile Rana has delivered firmly workmen-like filmmaking certainly competent but lacking in the energy and visual creativity that would match Christie's beloved Source material basically these films feel like generic Thrillers rather than giddy pulp there's no discernible sense of style are needed by the excess use of unconvincing VFX in death on the Nile in particular while Brunner is already deep into post-production on a haunting in Venice if the franchise continues past this it sure would be nice to see him seed the director's chair to somebody else with a fresh idea of how these movies can be made Brana should absolutely stick around his Poirot of course but the eye of a younger hungrier filmmaker should help these films feel less hermetically sealed and well a bit still it's probably not happening given that Brana is a reliable director who brings his projects in on time and budget even if you'd probably not call him particularly adventurous and as always please do let us know what you think of our list in the comments section and also let us know which film franchise you think needs to ditch one thing in particular that I really want to know if you want to follow me on socials I am at strawn87 on Twitter and on
