If the last 12 months have taught us anything, it's that technology is a vital and integral part of maintaining our everyday lives during world-changing events. One country has been proudly leading the world in innovation, emerging tech, and future design—the United States. Americans are notorious for advancing the rest of the world in the cutting edge tech of the future, so what toys can we expect from the US this year? Think of the ordinary technology you can't do without. The smartphone you browse social media on during the trip to work, the internet that connects you to others, and the 5G network allowing this all to happen. We take it for granted sometimes. Then there's the tech that we rely on when we're down and out, like an ECG heart monitor and the subsequent laparoscopic surgery using a little angiography balloon to push out the crud blocking your arteries. Or how about the CT or MRI scan that prompts doctors to start radiation or chemotherapy to get you back on the mend. There have been some genuinely fascinating scientific advances already, with more on the way… To get notified when a new video is posted hit the bell icon below, right next to the subscribe button. Thank you for watching, Mind's Eye Design! Wireless-Electric Grid Local Air Networks, or "wiggle" for short, sends targeted energy through the air and is absolutely as crazy as it sounds. In short, WiFi provides the internet connection, but WiGL will provide the power – wires will soon be a thing of the past and may possibly be ditched altogether in the distant future. The "internet of things," a rapidly growing array of wirelessly connected devices in our homes, will be powered up using smart technology that directs the power to where it needs to go. AC or DC power is converted into a two-way radio-frequency signal. Then a receiver converts it back from RF to AC or DC to harvest the energy. It's not sorcery, we promise. The unfortunate reality is that for many stroke sufferers, the use of extremities is drastically reduced. At the very least, the fine motor skills required to complete simple tasks like tying a shoelace are affected. The SaeboGlove is a rehabilitation product designed specifically for overcoming the paralysis and loss of function experienced after a stroke, regain some normality in everyday living, and improve quality of life. As the hand is closed to grasp an object, band tensioners provide the resistance needed to return the hand back to an open state – one of the hardest things to do post-stroke. They come in a variety, depending on the application, from the SaeboStretch designed to stretch out hands to combat spasticity and contracture to the SaeboSlim to electrically re-educate muscles and nerves and the SaeboStep to combat foot drop. Heart disease is the big killer in many developed countries. We lead sedentary lifestyles, and most of us don't get enough exercise. Eventually, the chickens come home to roost, and a lifetime of eating fatty foods and inhaling sugar like it's going out of fashion comes back to bite you in the backside. The Electron Beam CT Scan or EBT can identify coronary artery disease as much as 2 decades before the onset of any symptoms. It's a non-invasive procedure with a 99% accuracy for revealing the hard, dense deposits of calcified plaque that line arteries and cause atherosclerosis, as well as eventual heart attack and/or failure. The radiation exposure is nowhere near as high as a regular CT. It sits just above a standard X-ray. The scan takes all of 5 minutes and prevents the need for angiogram investigation. Classical medicine has a focus that is orientated around treating the symptoms instead of the disease. Gene therapy does the exact opposite but has copped some pretty bad press in the media and has been portrayed as dangerous science in Hollywood Sci-Fi blockbusters. Current treatment options like radiation and chemotherapy have severe side effects, with the dosage adjusted, depending on how much damage and toxicity your body can take. Not to mention they're so expensive that they're not an option for many people. Gene therapy looks to repair the section of DNA responsible for causing the illness. Damaged DNA results in tumors and cancers developing. As the DNA ages, degenerative diseases like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's start to rear their ugly heads. Designer proteins seek out damaged base pairs, act like a pair of scissors that remove the damaged section of DNA, and then insert the DNA sequence required for normal function. There's no doubt that harnessing the power of the wind to generate power is a great idea. After all, it's renewable and using a force already present in nature in place of burning coal in power stations. The downside is that the turbines are expensive to set up and maintain, extremely noisy, and absolutely massive. Not to mention a bit of an eyesore. The 2-Bladed Wind Tulips solve all of these issues. They're tiny and range from 3 to 18 feet tall. The units consist of two offset shell shapes that catch wind and initiative rotational force. At their base is a generator, which converts the kinetic energy to electricity. A cluster of Tulips can be set up on top of a roof and spin around without affecting anything around them to generate a steady trickle charge of electricity to replenish stored battery charge. The significant drawbacks of conventional spacecraft propulsion systems based on rocket fuel are the enormous costs, the impact on the environment, and the finite nature of fossil fuels. Wouldn't it be awesome if there was another way? Enter the CubeSat Electric Propulsion System. Eliminating the need for the conventional mass propellent to move through space is a game-changer and will revolutionize space travel. Using photons gathered from the sun. The system concentrates electromagnetic field strength and microwave pressure on a radio-frequency cavity resonator. Motion is induced by exploiting the density of the EMF field, as it's proportional to amplitude. Travel is made possible via the spread of asymmetrical EMF fields in a closed volume to create a positive momentum value. In short, it's exactly how you think a flying saucer works, but instead of using gravity as the drive, we're using magnetism. Ever walk on a road barefoot during the middle of a sweltering summer's day? On a scale of 1 to barbecued, how roasted were the bottoms of your feet? Now, imagine there is a way to harness all that heat and energy beaming down from the sun onto the road. Solar Road Panels are just that. Footpaths and roads take up a large amount of space. The same can be said about solar farms. They take up an expansive surface area in order to be a viable energy producer. It makes sense to replace transit surfaces with tough and durable solar cells that produce green energy. The US Department of Transportation has already greenlighted the commencement of the solar panel rollout. Not only that, any flat surface can be lined with the Solar Road Panels to capture the sun's rays in areas like playgrounds, parking lots, airports, or anywhere really. If you're thinking, "Hey, that's a big battery," – that's because it is. The Titanstack is a vanadium flow battery that uses the metal's ability to exist in 4 different oxidation states to store energy. There is a need for just one electroactive element and not two or more, like other battery types that lead to premature degradation and decreased performance. There are improvements across the board, with vanadium being 100% recyclable and reusable, non-polluting, and neither flammable, corrosive, nor explosive. The same can't be said about lithium. The cost of production per kilowatt-hour is about on par with lithium. However, a unit duration of 25 years and 15 million charge cycles has vanadium needing to be replaced 4 times less often. It holds 35% more energy storage at the same volume and has a 5% increased efficiency in harsh weather compared to lithium. When you were a kid, I bet you dreamed of having robots. Someone's childhood dream came true because the Stryker Mako is a robotic surgical assistant and the first of its kind. Implants used in orthopedic surgery are already 3D printed and mass-produced by robotic automation. Still, it's incredible to think that a state-of-the-art surgical robot could be the one to replace a damaged joint. The sad reality is that human error is unavoidable. A third of total knee replacement surgeries result in patients enduring chronic post-operative pain that may last the rest of their lives. Joint replacement hasn't really changed much in 40 years, with instruments resembling construction saws and drills. Surgeons use their eyes and best judgment to prepare the bone for the implant. But the Stryker uses various sensors and more delicate tools to perfectly match a bone to a prosthesis. The team that built Robocop had the right idea, but they got it half wrong. The way to make crimefighting robots is to eliminate the human element. Knightscope makes a range of autonomous robots that stop crimes before they are even committed. The concept is stemming from the attack on Boston. Each robot is fitted with eye-level 360-degree cameras, thermal scanners, a speaker array to address the public, and a processing unit capable of putting together all the data and deciding on a course of action. The K1 is a stationary unit and intended to act as an early warning system for home security thanks to scanning unwanted guests' faces. Once in position, it will relay footage and a list of comings and goings to a central mainframe. The K3 does the same, but with the addition of a set of very R2D2 like wheels. It packs the latest in LiDAR technology to navigate its surroundings to perform routine after-hours patrols of shopping centers, office space, and airports. The K5 is more robust and designed for outdoor use, returning to autonomously charge when needed. Its presence and the ability to use spoken commands to establish a physical presence acts as a strong deterrent for the bulk of petty crime. The K7 takes it one step further, and thanks to a 4-wheel chassis, can maneuver through rugged terrain off the beaten track. Law enforcement and security personnel are provided with constantly updated reports, increasing their situational awareness over a widespread area.
