It has been a really long season, and at this
point, while some clubs are still chasing silverware, some have already resigned to their
fate and written off the season. Some of these clubs know exactly where they got it wrong,
while some others are yet to figure that out. Well, whether they know it or not, we’re bringing it to you right now. Here are
10 mistakes that defined your club’s season. And we’ll start with the most obvious
one, Chelsea sacking Tuchel and hiring Potter. This is a 2-in-1 mistake. It
was bad enough that Chelsea sacked their Champions League winning manager at the
beginning of the season. But on top of that, they then decided to sign a mid-table manager who
had absolutely no experience coaching a big club. Well, they became so bad that they’re now in the
bottom half of the table, out of the Champions League, and have no hope to be back in Europe
next season. A huge and very costly mistake. But ironically, while we think
Chelsea should not have sacked Tuchel, we think Bayern should not have hired
him. At least, not at the time they did. We really still do not know what the club was
thinking when they sacked Nagelsmann midseason after he had made it to the quarter final of the
Champions League with a near perfect record. Yes, he was second on the Bundesliga table, but
come on, that wasn’t enough reason to let the man go like that. Who even said
he wasn’t going to get back on top? But it felt Bayern did not want to let the
opportunity to sign Tuchel pass them by, so they took that risk to sack Nagelsmann,
and well, that defined their season. At the time Nagelsmann was sacked, Bayern
were in the running for a European treble. But just 7 games into Tuchel’s tenure, and
Bayern are out of the Champions League, out of the DFB-Pokal Cup, and are back
to second on the Bundesliga table. Oh, and they’ve won just 2 of their 7
games under the new boss. Big mistake! But before we leave Chelsea for good, we also
have to say that another huge mistake they made which defined their season was re-signing
Lampard. Yes, it is only on a short-term basis, but I mean, why didn’t they just sign a top
coach immediately after they sacked Potter? If they signed a top coach
with proper European pedigree, who knows? They could maybe have beaten Madrid
and kept their Champions League hopes alive. But signing Lampard felt like they gave up
on the season before it really ended. One more huge mistake with coaches before
we move on – Southampton sacking Hasenhuttl. Southampton hired Hasenhuttl in 2018 and,
even though they came close a couple times, they never got relegated. They even finished 11th
on the table in the 2019-20 season. But because of a rough start to the season, Southampton
thought it best to sack Hasenhuttl. Bad idea! His replacement, Nathan Jones, lasted just
2 months. And Ruben Selles, who was hired after Jones, has still not been able to take
Southampton out of 20th position on the table. If only they had left Ralph Hasenhuttl, who
knows? They maybe could have had a chance of surviving the drop. But right
now, it looks like a lost battle. But not only the coaches have been huge
mistakes this season. Liverpool refusing to bring in a center midfielder at the beginning
of the season has really cost them. They were hit with so many injuries last season that it
became important that they brought in another midfielder. But what did the Reds decide
to do? Get Arthur on loan. Bad decision. Arthur also got injured and his injury was even
worse than the other players, so technically, Liverpool didn’t really get any replacement in
midfield, and that really cost them. Now, with many of their players just coming back, they’re
now just trying to salvage what’s left of their season by trying to secure a spot in Europe next
season, but it could all have been much better. On the other side of Merseyside, we think
Everton’s costly mistake was taking that gamble on Maupay. They had just lost Richarlison
to Spurs and Calvert-Lewin just cannot stay fit, so they really needed a striker. But
surely, they could have found a better striker than Maupay who went 3 whole months
without scoring or even assisting a single goal for Brighton in the second half
of the Premier League last season. Unsurprisingly, he has not been very productive
for Everton this season, and it has cost them so much, because if your striker can’t
score goals, how then can you win games? But while Everton’s problem was not having a
good replacement for their outgoing striker, Leicester’s mistake was not
doing that for their goalkeeper. Kasper Schmeichel leaving Leicester
City last summer was something that shocked so many of us. We surely
did not expect the club captain to leave in that manner. But it happened and
Leicester were not ready for it at all. They should have immediately gone out
to sign a top goalkeeper, but instead, they decided to trust their second choice goalie, Danny Ward. That turned out to be a
big mistake that defined their season. Ward made so many mistakes that really cost them, and we won’t say he’s the only reason
they’re currently in a relegation fight after finishing 8th last season, but
he’s surely one of the main reasons. Now the club is trying to patch up
at the back by bringing in Iversen and giving him more game time, but
it’s already too late now, isn’t it? And it’s probably already too late for Spurs, too. They should have gotten a younger and
better keeper a while back but they didn’t, and now it’s costing them. They should, at
least, be finishing in the top 4, but now, they seem like they can’t stop spiraling downwards
because their goalkeeper just can’t save goals. And not only can Lloris not save goals, he
also can’t seem to stop gifting them to the opponents. He currently tops the list of
players with the most errors leading to goal in the Premier League this season,
and that’s despite him being out for 6 games due to injury. That’s definitely not
a list you want your goalkeeper topping. Lloris was hooked at halftime after letting in
5 goals in just a little over 20 minutes against Newcastle. So, it seems Spurs have realized
their big mistake, but perhaps a little too late. Now, this next one may be a little controversial, but we actually do think that United forcing
Ronaldo to stay at the club at the beginning of the season was a big mistake. The man
wanted to go, and they should have let him go. Keeping him at the club and then not playing
him did nobody any good. It brought a lot of unnecessary media attention to the new
manager and it surely affected the team. Also, they seem to be doing much better
without him. Imagine how much better they would have done this season if they had
just let him go before from the beginning. Now, we’ll end with one everyone knew was a
mistake from the get-go was Nottingham Forest pretty much buying a new squad after
their promotion to the Premier League. Yes, they had a really thin squad and they
needed to get new players in in order to compete in the top flight. But 30 new players?
How the hell did they expect them to actually blend and play as a team in such a short
time? It was never going to work. Now, only a handful of those new signings
have turned up, and unsurprisingly, they look like they might be heading
back down to the Championship. What are the other mistakes you think
have defined football clubs in Europe this season? Let us know in the comments. If you enjoyed this video, give it a thumbs
