[Music] being a commentator for live sports is a difficult job especially in a dynamic fast-paced and unpredictable sport like mixed martial arts imagine handling the complexities of a live broadcast while describing the action in front of you as accurately as possible to the live viewers at home you're basically trying to sound like a professional and a fan at the exact same time with that being said though it can definitely make for some pretty humorous results that was like my worst prediction of all time welcome to the machida era even the best and frankly some of the worst have a few mistakes worth remembering an exciting risen event hey what's up guys jason here i just want to give a quick shout out to today's sponsor caveman coffee i'm so stoked to be partnered up with them they're owned by ufc vets keith jardine and tate fletcher which is just so awesome that they're supporting us they're offering 25 off on their website cavemancoffeecode.com if you use the code mma on point at checkout more on them later so let's jump right into the video these are 10 hilarious and odd mma commentator moments number 10 john mccarthy stepping into a role once held by jimmy smith is a tough task side note why in the world did the ufc and bellator let jimmy smith walk away anyhow legendary referee big john mccarthy was brought along to fill the void left by his bellator departure as one of the most recognized personalities in the entire sport who also played a huge part in creating what would become the unified rules mccarthy's time has been largely professional but at bellator 199 paul daly did his best to break big john out of that shell when jon fitch did exactly what jon fitch does and daley had no answers to his wrestling he chose to verbally express his frustrations as fitch out positioned smothered and repeatedly struck the kickboxer semtex turned his attention away from the man on top of him and turned it towards the commentary team [ __ ] mccarthy's foreign of daley's defensive wrestling he lashed out by booing and chastising bellator for pairing him with a wrestler paul wears his heart on his sleeve and he wants people to give this belt so millions millions of fans this is good while moore ronaldo was inclined to let daley speak freely big john snuck in a dig that's listening to paul daley it doesn't matter what he's saying because he's losing so as mccarthy pointed out the words didn't help as the final minute ticked away with daley still helpless against fitch's top control but for that brief moment in time it looked like big jon was on the verge of actually berating the fighter himself number nine joe rogan we're all very familiar with rogan whether it's his stand-up comedy or incredibly popular and profitable podcast he's made a name for himself in and outside of the sport his insight has been invaluable for would-be fight fans as they get educated on some of the intricacies of caged combat and it's no wonder that the different facets of his persona blended together for some well interesting moments rogan has gone from admiring tyson griffin's rear end bj pen quote blowing his wad and um goat vaginas goats vaginas [Music] another huge moment had to have been at ufc 109 also known as the great octagon ice spill of 2010. between rounds of the prelim bout between melvin gallard and honey torres torres corner accidentally spilled to mice into the cage floor to which rogan just completely went ballistic oh no this guy look at that they knocked the bucket over this three stooges he's still too much get the back get back in there you're not done there's ice all over the floor what are these guys they ran out i'm done we got it but the biggest commentary oddity in his career definitely has to be the night that leota machida ko'd rashad evans to win the light heavyweight championship he boldly proclaimed ladies and gentlemen welcome to the machida era we have just entered a new era in the light heavyweight division it seemed like a pretty fair assumption at the time with lyodo essentially being untouched prior to this but then of course shogun would embarrassingly make those words hollow almost instantly with a close decision lost to machida that most actually thought he won i thought shogun won the fight assuming that shogun won the first fourth and fifth he wins the fight prompting an immediate rematch where he would put an end to the one fight championship streak or era mere minutes into the first round still love you rogan number eight mora ronaldo before we begin let's make this crystal clear most of the people we've talked about already and including moronalo are great and well-regarded versatile commentators ronaldo himself has lended his voice to the highest levels of mma boxing kickboxing and pro wrestling but even someone as respected as he is has made a blunder or two his quick wit took an inappropriate turn during the gina carano and tanya evanger about at elite xc uprising when a law in the action prompted ronald to mention evanger's pre-fight declaration that she'd rather make out with gina carano than fight her color commentator bill goldberg no not mike goldberg the wrestler bill goldberg sensing a bit of awkwardness wisely decided that he wouldn't touch this topic with a 25-foot pole instead of just letting this lay up for dirty humor go by the wayside ronaldo tapped into his inner michael scott and announced his desire to i'd like to touch it with a 25 centimeter one that that's inappropriate and of course there was a decent amount of backlash to his remarks while some of the typical trolls took the forms to express delight in his humor you got to admit it's really awkward for a buttoned up commentator to be making sexual jokes about the fighters especially in women's mma when this was so new to being televised you should be selling the fight not treating it like a brawn painting match in wwe ronaldo has shared his regret over the years and was even briefly suspended by showtime sports as a result number seven stephen cuadros i'll be honest stephen cuadros is super underrated and i'm actually a big fan of him while now the american audience dictates event times and leads to fans overseas packing into arenas at ungodly hours early in the morning this wasn't quite the case in 1998 at that time pride fighting championships reigned supreme in japan as the world's premier mma organization so american audiences weren't exactly a high priority pride didn't even have live english commentary back then and instead recorded audio over the previous events for home release videos so yes instead of paying for boss rooting and stephen quadros to fly it to japan for live calls it was cheaper to book a recording studio and have the two contribute to it after the fact humorously you can actually look at mark kerr's fight and see boss rune in the corner as he's also commentating and that's what makes steven quadros's mistake during pride three so interesting when talking about the late notice bout between gary goodrich and amir ronavardi quadro shared a story of ronavardi calling him to say that he'd been offered the fight with gary goodrich okay so far so good some historical information sounds pretty good but then he continued to mention amir's follow-up call the next day to say well spoiling the whole fight and then amira called me after the fight was over and he told me that he had lost a fight in the moment though rooten immediately picked up on the air and reminded cuadros that they were pretending to watch live and the audio would need to be edited out okay they have to cut it out you're right here man the two then awkwardly try to feign suspense for the remainder of the recording but seriously why the hell didn't somebody just try to edit that out it's actually still on fight pass right now number six bill wallace if you say the name bill wallace to a middle-aged martial arts enthusiasts perhaps they will indeed think of the kickboxer known as superfoot whose incredible sidekick carried him to an undefeated record in middleweight title but ask anyone who's exclusive to the mma bubble and so long as they've seen ufc one chances are they'll know that name as part of the commentary team for the inaugural event or maybe you just don't know what the hell we're talking about but there is a reason he was never invited back to the ufc's booth and the trouble started as soon as his mic went live in the early seconds of the broadcast wallace began the evening by actually botching the name of the promotion the ultimate fighting challenge and hilariously burping while saying the name of the arena hello i'm bill wallace and welcome to my pickles excuse me at mcnichols arena to make matters worse wallace was woefully unprepared for the pronunciations of names like taylor tooley taylor tully gerard cordeau gerard jardo and hoyce gracie royce gracie who is a jiu-jitsu expert when he wasn't initiating truly bizarre bits of conversation with fellow commentators nfl great jim brown and fellow former kickboxer kathy long who knows maybe he was in just as much shock as everyone else watching at home but it's clear announcing was not his calling number five mike goldberg while he has found a new life as one of the voices bellator mike goldberg initially made his name in mma as the play-by-play commentator for the ufc duh during 20 years with the organization he inadvertently gave us some rather regrettable moments granted two entire decades is a long time to be in front of a microphone so yeah i get it he's been around for a long time of course he's gonna make mistakes but let's be real he's made way more mistakes than most of his colleagues a quick search for blooper videos will show some simple mistakes on the call you can even check out his non-mma highlight reel particularly his dreadful stint for the nfl but what stands out here are the times goldberg found a way to make things particularly strange with joe rogan and yeah rogan was ready to call him out as often as possible as ronda rousey found herself on the business end of holly holm's hands and feet at ufc 193 goldie strangely decided to remark on her rock star status rather than you know her getting beat up it takes a lot of energy to be a rock star anybody else seen the similarities between travis luter and michael jordan michael jordan asked in his grappling skills is travis looter [Music] nothing like a play-by-play description of a fighter touching the fence upon entering the cage how about a conversation about sexual innuendo in vampire mythology what the [ __ ] did you just say yes all that happened and frankly much much more his reliance on few signature catchphrases simultaneously drew the ira fans while providing a certain level of comfort and familiarity for others and to be fair here we are pointing out his mistakes but goldie is a beloved figure in mma and no matter what you think about the dude he was there for 20 years he was there during the dark ages helped them grow out of that and they just got rid of him it's a shitty and classless call by the ufc number four michael chavello cevillo is a very familiar voice to fight fans with stints including one championship k1 invicta dreams and goku lfa and king of cage hell anything that ever aired on axis tv for a few years the man known as the voice has been a staple in the booth known for witty remarks excited declarations metaphors similes and pop culture references he has inevitably raised an eyebrow or two during his time look no further than dream 10 which featured a main card bout between paulo filo and melvin manhoef the voice compared philo who is returning from a stint in drug rehab and a super bizarre loss to chelsea wec 36 with the infamously troubled singer amy winehouse in fact winehouse would actually die almost a year later so yeah that didn't age very well but more comically on two separate occasions shivallo made an inspired effort to remind danny manos of the taunts he likely received as a kid in school yikes constantly mispronouncing his name on purpose as my anus trying to slice minus open minus getting beaten on the back of the head could be in trouble here minus still right in the back of minus there is a [ __ ] on minus oh my anus is bleeding all over chavez's chest [Laughter] the voice was being an [ __ ] here let's be honest flipping the unfortunate name in as many unfortunate yet fight accurate statements as possible he displayed a level of savagery beyond the plethora of one-line zingers with pat militich even joining in on the fun like its step brothers number 3 mitch chilson one championship has developed quite the reputation for hyperbole billions of viewers worldwide lofty evaluations and all kinds of crazy things said about their accomplishments have been the calling card for the singapore-based group that level of exaggeration has made its presence felt in the commentary booth while the aforementioned michael chavallo has been known to turn up the volume whenever possible his partner mitch chilsen tends to really take it up a notch while commentators are usually known to put a little extra emphasis to play up the drama of what they're watching it's usually reserved for only the most insane sequences with stoppages or just all around big moments shillson has elected to push the envelope kind of just because we're supposed to bring him in between rounds but no match has gone past the first round and tonight how you doing brandon we're shouting like he's a second ring announcer in the post fight interview one middleweight world champion [Applause] and of course his habit of just repeating things like he's dc and this is thug rose when he's just maybe ran out of stuff to say joe marie perhaps if he weren't paired with the high-energy chavalo it would be a bit easier to digest the one fighter turn color commentator number two gus johnson when both elite xe and strikeforce managed to secure landmark broadcasting deals with cbs both companies turned towards established voices and other sports for an era of legitimacy enter gus johnson a veteran in the booth for the nba nfl boxing and ncaa basketball cbs tapped johnson for play-by-play duties already known for being a tad enthusiastic to put it mildly holy mackerel he brought that signature style to mma with less than stellar results when putting the stakes of the entire operation on an inexperienced kimbo slice came back to haunt elite xe in the form of a seth petruzelli ko johnson declared it the most incredible victory in the history of mixed martial arts what i mean come on all the legendary fights out there and this is the one that you choose and when strikeforce reignited cbs's involvement in the sport after the failed experiment johnson would once again provide the audio backdrop for another of mma's lower moments the strikeforce nashville brawl between jason miller and um everyone led johnson to proclaim to the nearly 3 million viewers at home sometimes these things happen in mma sure let's reassure everyone that this is totally normal and not as crazy as it actually was it just happens all the time great call gus and who could forget after verdum historically beat fedor he simply proclaimed which i would consider the equivalent of shouting punch after a knockout yes gus that's exactly right jiu-jitsu got it done really powerful and in-depth inside really appreciate it and number one chris cordero hey guys welcome to mma on par sounds pretty bad when someone representing the company can't even get the name right well let's meet chris cordero who did just that considering his long history in the sport with building regional promotions like king of the cage ifc and cage rage you'd think that he might be a bit better equipped to handle his responsibilities despite being hired for play-by-play duties cordero dropped the ball in every conceivable way while the english broadcast the second round of verizon's 2017 war grand prix was strange enough with the obvious and poorly executed green screen backgrounds i mean really what is with that angle all this just looks really weird and bad but cordera's words were even worse way worse beyond apparently showing up an hour late and repeatedly mispronouncing the name of the actual company that hired him verizon a win at risen can really put your name out there in a big way in this sport he seemed to not even try to get some of the fighters names correct well moving on to the shintaro ishikawa ishiwatari fight but his worst transgression was the amount of just blatantly sexist remarks he was making about female fighters on the card as miyu yamamoto made her way to the ring at 43 years old cordero thought it was time to talk about how women don't age well not not anything wrong about females but generally they don't tend to age as well as the gentleman dude are you kidding me what does it have to do with anything and i guess cordero being a jewel of aging male beauty i guess it made sense right of course it didn't he also then stated that the undefeated rina kubota was in the main event just because of her cuteness probably her cuteness has elevated her to main event status here in the risen event that we're watching tonight and then he made reference to a porn video that's what she won that tournament it was the two girls s cup championship i thought you were here to sell us the fight for you know the company that you're working for what are you doing it's just a horrible look fortunately for humanity cordero has not been seen in ryzen or risen or whatever he wanted to call it and yeah i don't think many of us are left wondering why real quick guys i'm super excited to give a shout out to our sponsor caveman coffee who we've entered into a long-term partnership with i absolutely love their coffee and lately i've been all about their mocha cold brew which i'm actually drinking right now it's super awesome they also offer a vanilla flavor
