at the core of every Final Fantasy game as you'd know if you played one is a party a group of characters usually controlled by the player some games have kept the party small forcing players to use specific characters for some or all of the game While others offered more flexibility that said across the board there are usually a handful of well useless characters while they might be important to the overall plot they're rarely used in important fights given their limited Effectiveness here we'll look at characters that few if any players would have included in their battle party also let me just head off early that I am a fan of Final Fantasy but a pretty new fan uh and there are some sentences in this list that include seven names I just learned so I have looked up how to say them all properly but if I mess up just this is my okay yeah I'm sorry I'm Jess from what culture and here are 10 Final Fantasy characters nobody ever used number 10 umaru Final Fantasy 6 Final Fantasy 6 boasts the biggest roster of characters that are available to you in the series with no less than 14 of these guys given the limited customization outside of esper and Magic setups most players will always gravitate towards the ones with the most useful commands such as sabin's Blitz button inputs or locks ability to steal items two of the 14 characters are hidden and can only be recruited late in the game through the completion of side quests the first of these go go is a gamebreaker given their ability to not only be given multiple commands but also mimic the action of whoever took the previous turn for zero MP cost there's a second one called umaru who is easier to find but terrible in comparison umaru has two glaring drawbacks the first being his inability to equip any items aside from relics two of which give him new attacks but the worth of these is limited and he can't receive any boost to his stats as a result the second is the fact that the only action he's capable of is attacking uncontrollably akin to any other character inflicted with the berserk status effect despite the fact that that makes him okay for doing out damage the lack of Versatility means you'd really be unlikely to be including him in your limited battle party so he tends to be as forgotten as quickly as he's discovered number nine minina Final Fantasy type zero equaling Final Fantasy 6's record for playable characters this particular game lets you choose a trio from Up to 14 classmates only a handful of these are beginner friendly necessitating the commitment of considerable time and effort to learn the individual Styles advantages and disadvantages of each a hard ask in a game that isn't particularly good in the first place thankfully the fact that the AI controls two of the three party members on the field where combat is fast-paced and sometimes brutally unforgiving means that difficult but nevertheless useful characters can still be utilized while controlling one of the more flexible characters characters like ranged Specialists Ace Trey ker and King the likes of REM juice and queen can be popped into a supporting role where then you can use someone like C 78 and N yes those are the names they got a little less creative after CE they're pretty good damage dealers that leaves Jen sink and minina as contenders for the title of the game's worst character Jack is highly frustrating given that he can't Dodge with his weapon drawn though said weapon can deal significant levels of damage when it's un sheathed sank is too slow to be of any use in all but the rarest situations though her unique stun abilities can upset the apple cut that leaves MAA though exstensively the game's male lead plot-wise his sluggishness and lack of useful combos easily secure him our dubious honor number eight Irvine Final Fantasy 8 one of Final Fantasy 8's notable flaws is that out of your six party members only renoa and squal are actually important to the plot over here you've got zel selfie cistus and Irvine who kind of you can take a life The Junction system in the game does at least mean that each of the six are fully customizable and can be slotted into any battle roll with only their weapons and limit break abilities to differentiate them while zel's input based melee attacks self's magical slots and qu's Powerful Blue Magic limits all have significant endgame uses Rena's pet-based and random support abilities are of limited Effectiveness by comparison but the rare instances in which Invincible moon or Wishing Star are activated that can make a huge amount of difference and we can't say the same about Irvine's sh limits the main downside of these is the fact that they consume ammunition of which there are eight types six of these can be bought in shops but if you're interested in the best two they need to be refined from items some of which are extremely rare obtaining 12 pulse ammo for squall's Ultimate Weapon is a considerable effort so getting more to throw away on limits that pale in comparison to the likes of Renzo kukin is an arduous undertaking couple that with the fact that Irvine is poorly written seemingly having no character traits apart from being a bit of a Lech and you have one of the series's More forgettable Heroes number seven snow Final Fantasy 13 now Final Fantasy 13 if you didn't know has the very unique distinction of being one of the series's most poorly received entries it wasn't helped by a battle system that was pretty complex to manage in real time necessitating occasional usage of its very lazy Auto Battle feature to have the AI decide the best courses of action to take against enemies the cast of six playable characters are again only set apart by their weapons summonable idolon and unique full ATB attack which unlike a limit can be used repeatedly if the action is cued to charge lightning snow and sar's idolon Odin Shiva and bilda respectively struggle to match up to konare Bahamut and Alexander who pledged their allegiance to vanil Fang and hope also I've got to just say as a new Final Fantasy fan that last sentence was just wild to say out loud the disadvantage to lightning and SARS is offset massively by their unique abilities both of which deal multiple hits and hugely useful for staggering enemies snow on the other hand is given a single hit Area damage attack combined with the fact that he uses his fists to attack he therefore has to constantly stay on the toes of enemies and take the full force of their assaults instead of utilizing range though he is useful for a period in fulfilling one of his slots as part of the Paradigm system he kind of ends up becoming pretty moot when you get plenty of other characters leveled up to fill in the role of Sentinel just as easily number six amaran Final Fantasy 9 Final Fantasy 9 is the only entry in the mainline series from PlayStation 1 onwards that largely restricts what players can and can't do with their characters as part of the game's omage to the series history the eight heroes were archetypes of the traditional Thief zidan Knight Steiner Black Mage vvv White Mage and sumoner Garnet IO Dragon Freya blue Mage Kina and monk amaran classes this breaks down into an equal split of four physical and four magical characters any combination of these eight has its own advantages and disadvantages but amar's drawbacks certainly come up a lot clearer than any of his companions the the fact that he doesn't join the party until the end of the second disc means that everybody else by IO who's acquired at a similar Point gets a sizable Head Start when it comes to development while his lack of redeeming character features make it difficult to build any attachment to him most notably however in the end game he lacks a maximum damage attack zidan's thievery can be boosted up to a guaranteed 99,999 with successful steals freya's Dragon Crest can hit for the same amount after farming Grand Dragon kills and Steiner's shock can usually hit that limit based on his power alone amar's best option is to use his throw command but that uses up items and the deadliest of finite in quality his second command flare does have some excellent abilities like Aura but none of them hit what anybody else can do number five Kamari Final Fantasy 10 six of Final Fantasy 10's playable characters have clearly defined capabilities which shoehorns them into particular roles throughout much of the game tiidus is speed focused Waka is best used against aerial threats Orin can take down armored enemies Yuna can heal rku can steal and Lulu is apt at dealing with creatures weak to Magic Kamari then sort of becomes a jack of all trades with no particular route set around the sphere grid and is more malleable in terms of abilities and stats while this should make him flexible and able to function as a supporting character that can fill a number of roles a jackal trades isn't necessary in a game where in battle switching of party members was made possible for the very first time it's much more effective to keep changing to the best character for each individual situation rather than having to make do with the second best Kamari also isn't helped by the fact that his Rono rage overdrive just isn't anywhere near as powerful as the Blue Magic version in previous centuries eventual unfiltered access to the sphere grid does bring everybody onto a Level Playing Field where you can have 255 in every stat and learn every ability but by then players will be more likely to stick with the characters that have served previous uses throughout the game with Yuna and Walker normally dead Sears for two of the three main slots given the usefulness of summons and the sheer power of attack reels number four melador Final Fantasy Tactics the job system originally introduced in Final Fantasy 3 and improved upon in Final Fantasy 5 has been missing an action in the main series since then it's always been about backbone of the tactics series though where arguably it was perfected the first time around tactics boasts 12 or 14 in the war of the Lions remake party members with bespoke job classes and almost all of them stand Head and Shoulders above the generic recruitable units given the power that many of their unique abilities possess some of these are even considered gamebreaking Orlando for example can use all of the Holy sword commands boasted by agrias all of the unyielding blade techniques boasted by madul and the two Dark Sword abilities used by temporary party member Garian that essentially makes him a 3in1 killing machine while that does mean that Orlando's existence makes agrias kind of moot in battle you'll still be using agrias a lot considering you get her really early on so she's got a lot of time to develop melad duel on the other hand is the last of the seven mandatory characters to join the party and is already tranced in terms of ability while several of the other characters aren't great for example Rafa and marrick are a little hard to master only melad serves no offensive purpose from the get-go number three Red Mage Final Fantasy 1 Final Fantasy 1 is the only game in the series where all of your characters are pretty much blank slayes they don't have defined personalities or even names the first decision that any player is tasked with making is what combination of the six available job classes they want to distribute across their party of four and it's a daunting task for the uninitiated a warrior is essential for damage dealing complemented well by either a monk or a thief for raw power or speed logic would then suggest picking both a Black and White Mage to give the party the full range of offensive or defensive magical capabilities that are available the Red Mage is presented as The Best of Both Worlds able to use black and white magic and also use swords and daggers for attacking this combination is immensely practical in the early game freeing up a party slot for a third melee fighter Over time however the Red Mage becomes a massive burden as while black and white Mages can learn all of their respective spells the most powerful ones are locked off from them even after bah upgrades the party's classes and turns the majors into Wizards adding insult to injury is the fact that Knights and ninjas are given the additional ability to use basic white and black magic though it's not as many spells as the red wizard it kind of renders them pretty much obsolete from the second half of the game onwards number two porum Final Fantasy 4 the original version of Final Fantasy 4 gave players no choice over what characters they used throughout the game with every new arrival to the party coming immediately before or after the departure of an existing member this meant that the finale was always based by the well balanced fome of cile edge Rosa Ria and Kane the Game Boy Advance and PSP remakes of the game threw a spanner into the works by making all of the other characters utilized across the journey available again upon its conclusion with the obvious exception of the deceased tala this creates a countless array of new combination options Edwood goes from being a joke character to a damage dealing beast at high levels though his development takes a lot of investment Yang becomes a tank Sid becomes extremely powerful physically and palom becomes a good shout to become the party's main Black Mage given he learns spells a lot faster than Ria albeit he lacks or summons that leaves his twin sister Pam who unfortunately doesn't really have any redeeming qualities considering she never hits the level of White Mage as Ria though Rose's unique commands aim and prey are fairly useless at least until prey is upgraded in the remake her arms are no better with Cry of questionable use and twin requiring palom to also be in the party if you want to use it at all number one Kate Sith Final Fantasy 7 it should probably not come as a surprise that pretty much the entirety of final fantasy 7's cast is held in high regard by fans each hero and villain alike brings something different to the table in terms of plot and personality from Sid's Gruff swearin to Vincent's dark and mysterious Persona that was a decade ahead of the emo scene and vampire subcultures that were very in Vogue in the 2000s the use of the material system makes each of the nine party members versatile with their limits and weapons again being the only thing that differentiates them all but two characters have four levels of limit break available with two available in the first three and one in the fourth for a total of seven Vincent is the first exception having one transformation and two attacks associated with each per level Kate Sith is the second a stuffed catm combination that fights with a megaphone and is controlled by a Shinra executive sympathetic to the party's cause Kate Sith is a ridiculous character even before his limits are taken into account the fact that he has only two levels of these both both luck-based Dice and Slots hugely restricts him given that everybody else by ath can unleash a devastating single or multi-hit attack nobody would have Miss Kate Sith if his sacrifice at the Temple of the Ancients didn't immediately coincide with an identical replacement he weirdly represents a lack of balance in an otherwise fantastic game that is very well balanced
