hi everyone we all sometimes listen to a new song and think i've heard that somewhere before there are only seven notes after all and so some melodies are unavoidably similar in different ways in the world of movies and comics things are a little different there the strong similarity between different characters it looks and character immediately raises questions about unfair borrowing do you think that only little known authors are guilty of something like that not at all today we will tell you about several incredibly similar dc and marvel fictional characters we will be figuring out along the way whether the similarities are homage or plagiarism let's get it on [Music] black cat the legendary catwoman first appeared in dc comics about batman's adventures back in 1940 the image of the super villain turned out to be so memorable and successful among readers that soon after that the catwoman solo series was created meow later she appeared more than once in both full-length movies about catwoman and various films about batman she had a romantic relationship with him many times by the way after the resounding success of the unusual dc character the opposing marvel company simply couldn't not create its own female character with similar abilities that's how black cat spiderman's partner was created she first appeared on the comic pages in 1979. black cats had a lot in common with batman's beloved they both had remarkable acrobatic abilities a special connection with cats and were master thieves but still there are a lot of differences between them as well for example they're both known for their martial arts talents however catwoman is much more experienced in that regard while surviving on the streets of gotham she learned a variety of disciplines like kapira karate jujitsu and kung fu as for the technical characteristics of their suits with retractable claws black cat owns more modern ones unsurprisingly since she appeared later by the way black cat was also romantically involved with the main character spider-man multiple times which is just another parallel between the two women was it plagiarism perhaps however as it turns out such borrowings are quite common in the world of comics as you shall see hawkeye same story here in 1941 green arrow appeared in dc comics he was an alternative to batman an excellent fighter and a skilled archer he put time bombs nets flash grenades and explosives into his arrows which always found their target a sort of robin hood in the world of superheroes 20 years later in 1964 a similar character appeared in marvel comics we first got to meet hawkeye on the pages of the tales of suspense series at first he was just a minor villain character but a year after he first appeared hawkeye joined the ranks of the avengers and became an important member of the marvel universe the striking similarities between the two characters are obvious but the funny thing is that even their loved ones are very much alike they both have bird names green arrow has black canary and hawkeye has mockingbird both girls are also excellent spies who know martial arts a coincidence we don't think so mr fantastic the situation with these characters is a bit more complicated they appeared in comics within just a year from each other dc first introduced the character of elongated man to the public in 1960 and mr fantastic first appeared in marvel comics in 1961. the former was an ordinary man called ralph dibny who thanks to his excellent knowledge of chemistry was able to create a super concentrated extract which gave him his superhero ability elasticity mr fantastic on the contrary did not get the super power of stretching his body to an incredible size voluntarily he went on an unauthorised space mission with his friends during which the entire team was exposed to radiation and mutated that's the origin story of the fantastic four marvel's reply to dc's justice league which appeared a year later another obvious parallel deadpool there are a lot of cool blockbusters based on marvel comics but deadpool is one of the most commercially successful ones until last year it was the highest grossing r-rated film in the history of cinema until it was eclipsed by the acclaimed movie joker long story short deadpool's character quickly became iconic among a wide audience but there is a catch yes you guessed right he also did not appear out of nowhere and the same rival company was involved once again deadpool first appeared on the pages of marvel comics in 1991. it is known that the anti-hero was created by the artist rob lyfield and writer fabian necesar when the former showed these sketches to his colleague fabian fairly noted this is deathstroke from dc bear in mind that rob himself had often spoken publicly about his love for all of the characters from the new team titans and deathstroke in particular it turned out that that was the idea to create an original marvel character inspired by deathstroke even the real names of the characters wade wilson and slade wilson are almost identical it is amazing that the authors managed to avoid litigation from the rival company after all several decades before that marvel had spent a lot of years trying to get permission to use the name captain marvel identical to the name of one of the dc heroes from the 1940s thanos and now let's talk about the greatest supervillains of the two universes in the world of dc this title rightfully belongs to dark seed a deadly member of a mythical race with the fictional name the new gods the first time the mighty giant appeared in comics was back in 1971 and guess what in 1973 marvel released a series about iron man where we first met the new character of thanos he's also a member of the race of superhumans known as the titanian eternals and has an incredible intellect telepathy telekinesis and of course godlike strength in both universes these heroes immediately became the main enemies of the avengers and justice league what can we say the creator of thanos artist james stalin has never denied that he was looking for inspiration while reading the comic series about the new gods and dark seed's author doesn't seem to mind either bullseye we wonder if there are any characters dc copied from marvel and not the other way around we'll see so bullseye who appeared in the comics in 1976 as the main enemy of daredevil was inspired by someone very similar from the rival universe we are talking about deadshot a deadly assassin and batman's adversary dc fans had first seen him in 1950 as many as 26 years before the appearance of bullseye both characters are skilled assassins who can hit any target with their ultra precise attacks there are differences of course first of all in their appearances bullseye also acts much crazier than deadshot one need only look at him killing daredevil's beloved elektra who died in the arms of the superhero swamp thing and here's a situation that seems to have happened by accident in a way it proves that artists sometimes get similar ideas so we shouldn't always rush to accuse people of plagiarism both characters swamp thing and man thing debuted in 1971 within two months from each other and this time marvel comics where the latter appeared was quicker than its competitor the characters are incredibly similar they're huge bodies made up entirely of plants would fit perfectly into horror scenery moreover any plant matter can become part of their bodies so it's almost impossible to kill both humanoids they both live in swamps and both used to be ordinary scientists who became monsters because of risky experiments hulk this green monster inspired by frankenstein and the novel dr jekyll and mr hyde appeared in marvel comics back in 1962. he also somewhat resembles a dc villain called solomon grundy who the fans first met back in 1944 however in this case the similarities are mostly limited to the looks of the giants with their strange skin colors first of all they're almost impossible to kill because of their strength and gigantic size yes both hulk and solomon grundy have alter egos but there is one important difference solomon doesn't remember anything about his past life while the hulk lives in the body of bruce banner a genius scientist that is why the latter is smarter and more calculating than his dc counterpart from time to time he actually has control over his mind by the way here's an interesting fact initially hulk's skin also had a grayish hue it was decided to make him green after the first published issue ink problems made it look like he resolved a slightly different color vision another pair of heroes who appeared almost simultaneously is red tornado from the dc universe and vision from marvel the latter debuted only a couple of months after the former obviously it wasn't plagiarism it's simply impossible to draw a new character from scratch and publish a whole comic book in just two months now let alone back then however the characters stories are almost identical they were created to be super villains and then voluntarily chose the side of good and also despite their nature they're able to feel quite human emotions they also look extremely alike both are androids with red skin and high intelligence there is one possible explanation for why things like this happen it's not uncommon for artists to work for two companies at the same time well and the rest is history someone says something at a dinner party and that's it one thing leads to another atomic skull and finally here's proof that it's not just marvel that gets inspired by the work of its colleagues in 1978 a new antagonist appeared in the superman comics called atomic skull he looked like a skeleton with a flaming skull and was dressed in a leather suit ring a bell that's right a very similar character already existed in the marvel universe we are talking about ghost rider that debuted in 1972. there are many visual similarities between the two characters but the parallels probably ends there atomic skull is a super villain with radioactive powers while ghost rider is a mystical character who looks like that because of the deal he made with the devil to save someone he loved hey buddy are you tired of watching videos about
