ten natural disasters waiting to happen number 10 Yellowstone supervolcano Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming is 3,500 square miles of pristine American wilderness home to stunning vistas and diverse wildlife it just also happens to sit on a potentially deadly supervolcano geologists have known the dangers of the Yellowstone volcano for a while however recent evidence from Arizona State University suggests we have less warning who originally thought the research states that Yellowstone Lost awoke 640,000 years ago following two infusions of the magma altering the temperature and mineral composition more alarmingly this occurred over a matter of decades as opposed to the centuries it was previously believed to take this means that while the Yellowstone volcanic observatory states that the supervolcano is safe they could only take a few decades before it blows any eruption will not only devastate the surrounding area but launch ash particles into the sky blocking the sun's rays and reducing agricultural yields and lead to a potentially catastrophic global famine number nine lately awesome TV much like Yellowstone Lake Nyos in Cameroon and make EVOO in Rwanda look too perfect to be dangerous however they are prone to a disaster called limnic eruptions which despite sounding like a stomach complaint is actually a potentially deadly explosion of toxic gas from a volcanic lake as recently as 1986 olymic eruption from Lake Nyos killed 1746 people as heavier carbon dioxide displaced air and suffocated all in its path the release of this gas can be triggered by anything from seismic activity to something as relatively light as a landslide or industrial activity in the region that's the fear for Leakey vu in Rwanda as energy companies attempt to harvest the 60 billion cubic meters of methane dissolved in the water as a source of fuel methane and co2 concentrations in the lake are rising and should it all be released than two million people living in the immediate area could be engulfed by a toxic cloud up to 100 metres thick number 8 earthquakes under British Columbia so if we're not safe near lakes or in a national park perhaps the forests of British Columbia and Washington State will be safer I mean besides Fraser nothing happens in Seattle right wrong dead dead wrong the Wanda Foucault plate is located 75 kilometers off the pacific west coast and has been slowly slipping underneath the North American tectonic plate for centuries I say slipping but unfortunately it has been stuck for some time in what is called the Cascadia subduction zone resulting in a buildup of pressure between the two plates which will inevitably lead to a megathrust earthquake of magnitude 9.0 or higher seven million people in both the u.s. in Canada live in a 140,000 square mile region that would be affected by this mega quake and Vancouver's own website once that there is a one in four chance that this long-awaited big one could occur in the next 50 years number seven Tuvalu it's easy to overlook Tuvalu it's one of those obscure form of British possessions in the South Pacific that even Britain forgets about until the Olympic Games however we should appreciate them while we still can formed of nine islands with a land area of a mere ten square miles Tuvalu has no natural point higher than three meters through a combination of rising sea levels and tropical storms there is a very real fear that the islands could disappear beneath the waves completely within 50 years even if Tuvalu doesn't disappear completely the rising seawater threatens to make the land uninhabitable so water contamination of sewage treatment would interrupt the sterilization process dumping untreated water into the freshwater supplies but Tuvalu could just be the first of a series of low-lying countries including the Netherlands and Bangladesh to be reclaimed by the sea over the course of the next half century number six Mount Fuji Japan the land of Pokemon samurai an embarrassing period in the 1940s and Mount Fuji a still active volcano with one of the world's most overcrowded cities nestled in its shadow since the year 2000 geologists have been speculating about month Fuji after a series of low-frequency earthquakes were detected in the facility indicating a possible increased chance of eruption eruptions have been on average every 30 years and while long periods of inactivity may well fall within a natural cycle the national research institute for earth science and as Oster prevention has identified significant pressure underneath the volcano this could be as high as 1.6 in mega Pascal's 16 times higher than the last eruption in 1707 the danger here is that the 1707 eruption was so violent it revocable changed the mountain and surrounding landscape since then the capital of Japan has moved just 59 miles away with the lives of thirty seven point eight million people at stake unfortunately according to Segura su2 of Japan's National Institute of Advanced industrial Science and Technology is impossible to say when it will erupt only that it's over Jew number five the San Andreas Fault Los Angeles is only second to New York in Hollywood's almost creepy fascination with destroying parts of America now this could either be because Hollywood execs old masochists or because the San Andreas Fault is 30 kilometers away from their front doors marking the tectonic boundary between North America in the Pacific the San Andreas Fault has been the cause of several Californian earthquakes however these have been small compared to what seismologists have called the big one a study in 2017 from the US Geological Survey found that major earthquakes happen on average every 100 years and their last major event occurred 161 years ago the plates have been pushing into each other at a rate of one inch every year storing such energy that an earthquake could last minutes instead of seconds a 2008 model predicting a magnitude 7.8 earthquake one of the strongest possible estimated 1,800 deaths 50,000 injuries and 200 billion dollars in damages thankfully they believe the chances of this happening in the next 30 years is only seven percent but the more time watch is on the higher the percentage becomes number four solar flares so we've gathered the earth is doing everything possible to kill us but what about external forces well it goes news because the Sun is also trying to destroy the planet by releasing enough radiation to end life on Earth permanently we live in a technological world where practically everything runs on electricity however the Sun periodically has solar flares which if they hit earth act as EMPs and fry electrical equipment the last recorded one was in 1859 which downed telegraph systems and caused electrical surges through circuits today the damage would be far more widespread GPS food and transportation monetary transactions all would be disrupted if not halted entirely imagine hospitals going dark and bank accounts of white a particularly damaging storm would also strip parts of the ozone increasing the chances of cancers and mutations worst of all according to a study in 2012 by physicist Peter I li or predicted science in San Diego there is a one in eight chance of this happening in the next decade number three slowed rotation of the earth you know when people say stop the world I want to get off well they should be more careful what they wish for recent studies have concluded that the earth has slowed down by millisecond a day increasing the risk of earthquakes don't stop just yet there is evidence to back this up a presentation by the Geological Society of America in November 2017 studied every major earthquake since 1900 they found a correlation between the Earth's rotation decreasing and an increase in earthquakes of magnitude seven and above the average number of quakes should be around 15 of major quakes a year yet when the earth slows down this leaves to 25 to 30 and guess what the earth entered one of these periodic slowdowns just over four years ago this means that if this stun is accurate we should be entering an era of significant seismic activity this very year lucky us number two hill in the slump if you take anything away from this list is that you're not really safe anywhere on earth however you're especially a danger if you live on the western seaboard of North America for example the hilina slump is a 5,000 cubic mile slab of land to the south of the Kilauea volcano in the Hawaiian Islands while not dangerous on its own the slump is sliding away from the volcano and into the sea at a rate of 10 centimeters a year there is a worry that should the slump slump completely into the sea it could generate a tsunami that could easily knock out the western seaboard of North America if this sounds fanciful a small movement of the slump in 1975 triggered an earthquake causing destruction in Hawaii the death of two people and a tsunami felt in California all it would take is a small seismic action in a volcanic region to overcome the natural buttress in place number one Mumbai flooding in 2005 the Indian city of Mumbai suffered a flood that claimed the lives of 1493 people made over 14,000 people homeless and destroyed critical infrastructure and services as devastating as this was there's an extremely high chance it'll happen again and potentially be far more damaging rapid urbanization and a growing population places more people in harm's way while also decreasing suitable drainage for floodwaters to make matters worse the drains that are in place in the city are constantly clogged by plastic rubbish if the city's drains were regularly cleared losses from such a devastating flood could be reduced as much as 70% also increased silting around the mouth of the mithi River and the clearance of mangroves has only exacerbated the problem when time is rapidly running out from Mumbai to find solutions to these problems environmental scientists and activists have predicted that the chances of a flood worse than the 2005 one would double by 2080 with an estimated 11 million affected so that was ten natural disasters waiting to happen which one do you think is the most imminent let us know in the comments below and if you like this video check out 10 places frozen in time
