[Music] [Music] it is not a movie about comparing numbers or statistics it is not a movie about what is wrong or what is right it is a movie about the life and the longevity in Okinawa Josie is documenting the lifestyle that these elderly people experienced in order to share it and inspire the rest of the world these days our lifestyles evolved very quickly and sometimes for the best but sometimes for the worse humans can also adapt very quickly in this fast-paced world this movie is teaching us how a basic and simple life can benefit us we will dive into the way of life and how Okinawans are led by the concepts of moai and a key guy in your everyday life giving them a sense of purpose and drive through this movie we will show you a glimpse into the day-to-day life of Okinawans including their food active lifestyle and community and how those aspects play a big part in shaping their rich and long lives this film documentary is based on Josie Julian's photography project Josie along with his wife Shanti went to Okinawa for the first time in March of 2017 with the project in mind of photography elderly people up to hundred years old and also to interview them to understand the secret of the longevity this first trip was not easy they did try to establish contacts before traveling there but it was not successful so they did deploy a lot of energy in Okinawa during the first week in order to make contacts and find our way around by asking people on a stream both husband and wife walked around the streets with a poster written in Japanese that they are looking for all people to photograph it happened to be really successful with the help of Maki mokou and others a local newspaper also published an article saying that Josie was looking for elderly folks to photograph for an exhibition the experience was full of feelings and senses it was very touching and emotional to interact with the many marvelous people the first lady whom Josie was supposed to photograph cried just when he was ready to photograph her she was feeling emotional that a stranger would come to see her and photograph her Josie's photography project during the first trip of three weeks were all in black and white and he managed to capture 15 elderly people his second trip took place in April 2019 excited food kena Kyoko is the first person who chose a photograph for this trip in 2019 she instantaneously brought him back to his memories and feelings of his last trip to Okinawa with his panache a what's your secret for to leave it so long magic analogies abajo at a ripe age of 19 she is living alone in her traditional house here in Curry Island the interior decor is also traditional and matches well with her outfit Naha market is very rich in terms of food ingredients it offers a seafood and meat section some of the ingredients are only specifically found at Okinawa you can still see elderly people working there in a maken food is a huge part of their culture and the people have involved healthy diet in their everyday lives [Music] meaning daycare or Oh folks home are very suitable for the elderly people in Okinawa the staff takes care of them very well and they do various activities such as singing and playing games which help to keep your minds active to execute the photoshoot section was kind of intertwining for them it is heartening to see the elderly people making friends and engaging in activities to add more joy and color to their lives some of those elderly only spend the day in the daycare center and will return home to stay with their family others will stay overnight you [Music] Emme restaurant is a well-known restaurant situated in a guinea it is owned by a very energetic and passionate lady Emma Koch enjoy the restaurant menu contains two interesting dish sets one is the long life meal and the other one is called the maca Cinque Mesa lunch the one that she is making today is the lunch set which she used local and seasonal ingredients her foot is fresh and gives a very homey feel when you dine at her restaurant amico is a passionate and believes in educating the young people about local food preparation in order to pass down the healthy food culture to the next generation in order to experience how unique and tasty cuisine you have to make a reservation a day before in na go and the elderly home Futami no sato there is a birthday celebration going on smiles and Happiness are apparent on all the faces of the people not only the staff and the elderly people are part of the party there are also young kids dancing all together this is one of the characteristics of Okinawa for various generations to get together and share moments on that day Josie photographed and interviewed 12 of them their attitude and spontaneity were adoring [Music] oh gee dos equis on and ajidasu son a couple and they are 98 and 97 years old respectively it is the first time that Josie witness a couple of that age almost close to a hundred years old it is very rare to have both husband and wife still alive at such an age this couple looks like a young couple and it is almost hard to believe their real age Josie got a contact an opportunity to photograph them when he went to a Shenzhen Okinawan guitar class a week before to meet and have the chance to share this moment with them was very special the time that he spent together can never be compared to us having the chance to spend as much time with our loved ones like parents children or siblings they are married for 76 years [Music] sunshine originates from China it is something very important in the culture of Okinawa and is used during all the festivities and celebrations like weddings sunshine has a strong place in the hearts of Okinawan people the sunshine has three strings and the wet sunshine means three lines a standard sunshine body is typically covered by snake skin [Music] [Music] boy I mean what's it up long time ago in the okinawa we didn't have a bank bank because so country there we made the people making a helping each other so somebody need money because somebody go to the hospital or go to the kids going to school because school so me the money so able friend together together bring money every month okay example ten people if you have a friend ten people coming to bring the money every month same time so this month who wants help need help to money so every month ten people ten months we together to bring money like a bank so that's starting and what say that you once know about each other but all day each other but all day is a same if I meet you today first time but if meetings are already friendly and or brother-sister that mean straight that's mine thinking way making them muy same each le bateau they make them my and have helping each other so have enjoying today we have 10 people French bring money partisan that's very small because every month when talking you know excuse to have a from the house everybody coming together have enjoy food and next time boy so eatery but always has a minded spirit you tomorrow being in the Okinawa every family sugar cane farm but no neither together wife and husband need a hairpin right need somebody walk here so today she working from my prayers every helping me all family coming never for coming today the next day is your farming ever going there helping that's a help each other you Amaro welcome to Genoa and I hope you enjoy it okay now though it's a semester [Music] one of the characteristic points in Okinawa is that people are active most of them own a garden or a piece of land for to grow vegetables while others go for regular walks take care of their grandkids and some exercise every day these are not extreme activities but simple daily things to keep themselves active by walking in the market in Naha you can already see many elderly people still working there even at a very advanced age the interesting thing is that two years before Jozy met some of them and now they are still at the same spot doing the same thing how incredible it is that they even recognize Josie the lady who works at a flower shop is 82 years old she started at the age of 18 working every day and has never sing she takes care of her shop very well and people around her come to patronize her yo she is 92 years old and works everyday in her field growing vegetables but also takes care of her various fruit trees again is hard to believe that she is actually 92 and still is able to make full use of her body and have the energy when we share with her our surprise of how fit she is she is super humble about it besides working to keep active the elderly also engages in different ways to keep active such as gay and ball gait ball is a unique game that is very popular in Okinawa you can see people play it everywhere on a spacious feel or by the beach it is also a great way to socialize [Music] many of the elderly people are really impressive but manana chi is a man who stood out nakai stays on the sixth floor of a building in Naha by himself he is a very independent and well educated in the first impression you can feel his energy and intellect it is only later with lunda he lost his wife a few months ago followed by his dog recently even with these two family members gone nakai keeps on enjoying life and has been busy every single day with activities on his own he keeps doing sports activities at least twice a day [Music] Rocio I in Okinawa is known for this indigo plan it is a green plan but can produce the Indigo dye color by fermenting the leaves a lot of people consider the Indigo made from the lukio I plan one of the most beautiful shade of blue in Okinawa it is used for painting fabrics and other items you can fold your fabrics in various ways to create designs are also used for bing gotta the process takes time and is repetitive but it results in a beautiful crafting the artist in the shop is using the bing Gaza technique on various items with a modern touch and with an unusual design for Okinawa bing guitar mokou-san taught us the gift of life and friendship we met her through context of context under various circumstances at once upon meeting she started to drive us around and offered her help to find elderly people in the following day find people was challenging for me because the Joseph wanted to find the people over the 90 years old we can find the people over the 70 years old you know or 80 years old but it was difficult to find - over the 95 years old people without her the project will not be as successful as it is she is indeed a brilliant person and she did others out of love [Music] okay I learned you know how like falling people see Japan you know see it and think about Okinawa and I thought it was it is the usual for me for us so at the longevity or just like direct healthy and I you know this small community but idealized that this is a special what makes Okinawa special for the long life of its people it's not just one factor but various factors we can definitely guess that annexed population of elderly people will continue to have long lives - now what about the next generation with modernization a change of diet hobbies relationships and becoming more digital eyes and a fast evolving lifestyle will they encounter the same blessing in longevity as their ancestors we are confident because even with these changes in lifestyle in Okinawa they are still working on keeping their traditional culture and relationships between generations their philosophy and outlook towards a simple life along with their life's motto of moai and Ikki guy were passed down from generation to generation for many years to come [Music] you [Music] you
