foreign s have been an essential tool that people have carried around with them for hundreds of years literally hundreds of years Thomas Jefferson was known to carry between three and six of them in fact on his person pretty much every single day but ever since Victorinox came out with the Swiss Army knife they have been like just basically the quintessential EDC pocket carry and for good reason they have remained inexpensive accessible there's there it's easy to find them and they work they work very well they last for a very long time not many companies have come out with pretty much anything to compete or Dethrone the Swiss Army knife and I still think that's the case but I think we're getting closer and closer to finding Alternatives that might actually appeal to someone and today I'm going to talk about one of those and that is the brand new Next tool pocket knife now as we're going to explain this looks familiar to a number of things we've also reviewed in the channel but at both the price point and what appears to be the tool set I think it's one we have to really look at because it Compares very favorably to what I consider to be the number one the tornox pocket knife you can carry every single day so when it comes to Swiss Army knives and carrying one every day one model pretty much dominates my thoughts as far as something I could recommend to literally everyone and that is the Victorinox super Tinker so this is a three layer knife it has scissors a Phillips on the back it has the standard flat head Phillips can opener combination it has the small pocket knife as well as the large blade and it has a reamer all hook Etc so this knife has remained inexpensive in fact right now this is still sitting under thirty dollars so it begs the question do we need another pocket knife to enter the market that competes directly with this tool I guess it depends right because there are some things about this that haven't changed and would be nice if they did such as having a blade you could access one-handed enter the next tool so there's a number of other tools out there that do this we've talked about the arm bar we've talked about the Leatherman T4 and T2 but what makes this special is this also competes on price so this coming in under twenty dollars I think I paid 17 for it is is is something interesting to me also it has something that the Victorinox does not have well two things it has it does not have number one it has a one-handed blade and as you can see a substantially larger one it also has something that we're starting to see a little bit more often and that is a pocket clip now you can get pocket clips that attach to a Victorinox and I think those are great so that part may be a little bit moot but when you combine the price yeah it kind of changes the comparison even more and pushes it more in the favor of the um Challenger here so the reason I was attracted to checking this tool out is I really think they had the right combination of tools now this looks very similar to a bunch of different budget tools that I've reviewed ones that have pliers and it's because it is it actually looks like it was made in the same framework as those tools but what they've done is they've installed a spring retention on not one but both of the sides of the tools so there's one here right on the inside of the frame and there's one here for these tools so they are non-locking on the inside but it does allow them to have tools on both ends and actually a pretty impressive tool set so let's go ahead and walk through the tool set here and compare it directly to the super tanker all right so here they are splayed out so first let's run through the super Tinker you have two blades on this tool a large and a small and I have to say I was skeptical of how useful this small blade is but in fact I tend to use it even more than the larger one it's it's I don't have to prove this tool anymore and I don't think anyone does the super tanker is phenomenal on top of that we have a scissor and I still think probably the best of any multi-tool or pocket knife scissor that currently exists on top of that we have a flathead bottle opener as well as a two-dimensional Phillips small flat head and can opener on this side there's also a small wire stripper to you know put into here but it's not a cutting style wire stripper it actually has just like a basically a small Notch all right on the back we have a parcel hook it's used for a couple of different things but that's the general purpose of it a three-dimensional Phillips and a reamer all combination so that is the tool set for the super Tinker now the next tool is a little bit different but very very similar we have of course a one-handed blade that locks from the outside so this does not have a second blade but we have one blade we have a very large scissor and I'm going to focus quite heavily on this scissor in this comparison but we'll we'll get back to it in a minute and then on the inside we have a three-dimensional Phillips a square one and what looks like it's actually a number one not a number two Phillips so there is a bit of a difference from the dimension and the way in which it works but yeah so it's a little bit different it's going to struggle to to work with the larger Phillips head screws but it should work pretty well with the small ones something of mention this also has a file both a cross cut and straight cut but I have to say neither one of these is particularly aggressive and uh yeah they could have just skipped this tool entirely if I'm being honest on this side we have a flathead and bottle opener as well as a v-shaped wire stripping Notch I actually do like that that's nice and we have a can opener which also can be used as a bottle opener as well so a little bit of redundance here here maybe better to have kept all of the uh the strength in this tool by not creating a bottle opener just a thought and then the last tool is a reamer all so it has that as well all of which is inline with a slip joint setup now the tension on this it's about comparable in fact to the tension that I find on the tools for the Victorinox so that that is interesting so they didn't do a bad job here there is I can definitely feel the to tension it's not as high as I like but it's okay now all of these tools actually work in line so if I pull the Phillips out right I'm working with it in my hands like so versus a t handled setup of the Phillips on the Victorinox so I think there are some advantages here there's another thing I wanted to test and let me go see if I can go find it yeah I want to see something here's my my package my Yellow Birch Outfitters packed with all my Leatherman stuff in it great great zipper pouch by the way but I wanted to know did they specifically create that square Phillips to work with this as a side effect and it does appear that it fits but it's got a little bit of Wiggle just a little bit I'm not sure if it really matters it seems like it's good enough I would have liked it to be a little bit different in dimension but I think that's an easy thing to mod on this I'm not exactly sure which dimension needs to be shrunk but yeah a little bit deeper in and that would sit perfectly but even without it it will work with the ludman bit kit so that is a nice bonus already all right now the rest of this is going to be about the the blade and the scissors for the most part um mostly the scissors the question I have in my mind is how good are these very very very large scissors so let's close everything else up on this tool pretty carefully now this is a used uh super tanker that I bought off eBay and that's something I want to bring up before we go onto the scissors Victorinox tools are well proven when it comes to longevity I buy used Victorinox tools all the time to take apart for various purposes and they're all they all hold up it's crazy how how well they held up so in order for something to overtake the Victorinox it has to be really special it has to be both cheaper and potentially equal or better which seems like a near impossible task but here we are we're testing it anyway so look at the size the scissor difference here these are Big scissors on this tool and what's interesting to me is they're not the same as other scissors in this platform let me show you what I mean so this is the Fantastic car multi-tool that we talked about what way back when and as you can see the blade is very very similar it certainly appears like they are very much in line with each other when it comes to uh manufacturing I think they were the same OEM but the scissor is quite different on these tools now this performed incredibly well incredibly well in our testing this scissor though this is different this is definitely different it looks like not only does it have a longer Cutting Edge but it comes to a you know a sharper point when it comes together so that's that's definitely different than these other models the question is will it perform on par with this because this even outshined the Victorinox not including the fact that it couldn't do a Precision test this obviously could so let's go ahead and test this and see how these scissors function all right let's go ahead and check this out so this isn't the entire Gauntlet that I was using but it's most of it so we'll go ahead and check it out starting with the thin thread no problem both at the tip and at the bottom let's do the shock cord yes there no there okay so most of the way now how's this actually does a solid job even at the tip so that gets a two it's a total five so far that cuts clean that's good the Kevlar Kevlar fabric that's pretty close to a two I mean it's what would make it a two is if I close it all the way at the tip and it actually goes all the way through and this does not for the reference point here you can see how this is an old scissor and even that you know actually it's kind of similar isn't it still kind of pinching a little bit inside so maybe they are about the same okay now let's move on to the hardest materials so seat belt so it would get a one it can definitely cut it and um the 5 000 pound pallet strap I mean that's this is a this is a challenge for any scissor except for maybe the uh clients electrician set sheer but it is clear cutting it clean which is really good sign for reference point here's the used Victorinox and it does cut it a little bit easier but still the same sort of struggle I can't imagine this is good for the scissors to do something this tough but it's just a test right it's to kind of see where it's going to deform and from what I can tell these are actually pretty good these scissors I doubt it will do a Precision test but let's give it a shot so in other words it has to cut one of these little strands at the tip no I I didn't think so I didn't think so but this definitely will yeah no problem see anyway either way even without that that's very impressive that's very impressive for the price point so this this comes in at like 18 and it's substantially bigger I will I will definitely say that but still so far so good on this um I like the deployment at least of the Phillips and uh they don't look to be the same if you look at the Fantastic car and all of those models they use a much worse Phillips um you can see here it's kind of like a cast you know rounded Corners this is much better much much better than those other models I like this far far better um definitely something that I think is decent and the same thing is sort of true with this about being able to be used with the Leatherman bit adapter but less so there seems to be even less wiggle with with this one just maybe I think it's just maybe a little bit too thick in the this direction here just a little bit yeah is this is this good well yeah for the price I definitely think so let's go ahead and do one more thing and then we'll do our conclusion just want to check the weight of this tool coming in at 131 grams or just under over four and a half ounces versus three ounces for the super tanker and I think that's says a lot it says a lot so let's go ahead and make a conclusion at this point I think we know what we need to say all right so let's make a conclusion so first of all not bad not bad at all on this tool it offers some things that the Swiss army knife lacks primarily the pocket clip and the blade and yes you can get a pocket clip for the Victorinox but you're going to end up adding an additional 10 so if you apply the cost of 38 versus 18 20 is a pretty substantial difference in cost uh one thing that I didn't get a chance to say and and I want to say here is that the blade length for this comes in at around three and a quarter inches which is an obnoxious blade length unfortunately it doesn't fall under three inch blade laws it falls under three and a half inch blade laws and uh that's just kind of annoying because there are a lot of areas including the place that I work where they you're not allowed to have anything over three inches when it comes down comes down to and uh that's just a missed opportunity so I think that that is something they should change in the future for sure and the last thing I want to point out that I didn't get a chance to talk about is right here on the bottom is supposedly supposedly a glass breaker on top of everything else I have my doubts at how well that's going to work I'm certainly not going to be able to test it myself but I just want to mention that it does exist on the bottom of this tool uh yeah not bad not bad it's a little bit heavy but the tool set solid the scissors work really well and the Phillips is far better than many of these budget pocket knives that we see all in all I'm pretty happy with it as it sits I don't think it's gonna come close to matching though the super Tinker now remember at the end of this we weighed them and there's a big difference between you know four and a half ounces and three ounces big difference so what I what is the one-handed capability worth the ounce and a half are the larger scissors worth an ounce and a half there's there's a lot of questions um that you have to answer for yourself I just wanted to kind of showcase it and see if this was any good at all and yeah it's pretty darn good pretty darn good anyway thanks for watching I appreciate your time and we'll talk again soon
