No, it depends on the exchange rate with the dollar. - And in Cuban pesos? In Cuban pesos, 500 CUP. - 500 CUP. And you have for... 25. It's pretty narrow for me... The risk of falling is too high. We must be careful. - Hey, who's there? Anything you want to say? - Long live the revolution! And we arrived in Cuba after after an eventful stay in Nicaragua. For the loss of my wallet and cards. I was arriving in Havana on a fairly simple flight. Cancun, Havana. To meet the reality of the most controversial country of Latin America in the last 50 years. A country that would transport me to times where everything is solved with cash. And where families are more concerned about the day to day than about fulfilling their dreams. I arrived in Cuba without any political ideology. Nor because I admire Fidel, Ché or communism. Nor capitalism, in case you are thinking about it. I come to this country because since child I always heard it in songs, movies and history of my parents. I come here because I'm a youtuber, not the one who's going to hide in the tourist bubble. But to live the life of a 100% Cuban, their day to day life, his shortcomings, their reasons for laughter and the reasons why they continue to shine despite the harsh reality they are living. Don't worry, I've already left Cuba. I don't know if I'll be able to get back in or not. In this upcoming series, I bring you some very good stories. Shocking and incredible. Stories that we will never forget and I'm sure we will learn from it. Without further ado, this was my arrival in Cuba. And finally we left the airport. It's been a pretty straightforward, pretty easy. They only asked me for passport, tourist card. "Come on in, welcome." No questions. Please note, before entering the plane with the airline you are coming with, you will be asked to fill out a traveler's form. You fill it out (pay attention to the address). Because if you don't, it's going to take you a while like me. And, automatically, you leave the airport at ease. What a pleasure, what a way to arrive in Cuba. And watch out, what's coming today is going to be strong. Mainly because the mission/objective will be to change dollars. We are here, at the currency exchange. In which we are going to lose a little bit of pesos. But it will allow us to change to move. There to the end and, at the end, you turn left. Are you on the bike? You turn here and... Hello. To change 20 USD, please. Hello, a question. We were told that at this address was the bus stop. Which way is it? I mean, do I have to go to the avenue? - You have to go to the avenue. Okay, it's... - Look, you cross over here, right next to that one, over there. Okay, thank you! - Bye-bye. Let's walk! But up to 20 minutes from the main avenue. However, we have decided to hitchhike (ask for a car). And here we have been slowed down. Well, thank you very much! And in the end, it came out... not for free. But, in the end, the gentleman asked us for a collaboration. Fortunately, we already had a few Cuban pesos. So that we could hand them over to him. This is the first view we have of Old Havana. Look there, 'Vieja'. Because Havana is not all as it is painted. There are even Audis and modern cab cars. It is an incredible contrast that can happen on a street. Audis, a car from the 50's or 40's. Like that one, for example. All that can happen only here in Old Havana. It is quite interesting. Look, we have met here a gentleman with his cigars. He has just come from buying his cigars. - Of course. How much queue time did you do? - None. None? And how much does it cost in dollars, for...? - No, it depends on how the exchange rate with the dollar. And in Cuban pesos? - In Cuban pesos, 500 CUP. 500 CUP. And you have enough for... - 25. For the whole month. - For the whole month. Undoubtedly, the first risk that we have to go through when we arrive in Havana is to get to your hotel or to get to your residence. We are taking this risk because it would be very easy to take a cab from the airport. Spend between 25 to 30 USD and let us be located there. But we are opting for the way a local would usually do. I would go out by bus or I would go out by the most economical means possible. We are in Old Havana. The cigar lord told us "boy, you are dog tired. Please follow me". We have to go... Well, here the man is going towards Cuba street and I'm going towards Consulado street. That more or less are close and we have coincided. Because I just him on the plane. Well, here we are at last. - We're here, we're here. - No problem. Thank you. Thank you for... - I'll send you in. Shall I close? - No, leave it like this. Shall I leave it open? - Yes, it's open. Where do I leave the suitcase? - Come on, let's go upstairs. - If you want to extend, you have to tell me. If, for example, you are going to stay 1 more day, 2 more days. They can send you money, but from the United States, they bring it to your house. - Oh, yeah? Cash? Yes, in cash. They bring it to you. - Wow. Well, and you're probably wondering how it is we arrived with an authentic Cuban family. We could have gone to a hotel, get away from the authenticity of the Cuban, but we opted to rent an Airbnb. In which we get 10 USD a night. I am going to leave you the contact personally, because Elizabeth, from the first contact already seemed to me to be an incredible person. And who uses this medium as a feasible month-to-month income. And there goes the other risk: which is to live fully with cash here in Cuba. And if you are a foreigner, uf, what's coming... Let's take a tour through the room too fast. There are two connectors, which I like, to be able to connect the batteries and the cell phone. So far I haven't asked if there is internet. Probably, there isn't. Then, we have a night table, where the backpack is. And this light, in case at night we want more luminosity. However, we are going to save a little bit. This is the bed. This is the bunk where we are going to sleep. This is the mirror. And I want you to see something that surprises me very much, which is the ceiling. Which is with steel and calamine. That's the only thing that holds. However, Elizabeth just confirmed to me that she has plans to rebuild the roof. As soon as possible. Because in Old Havana, lately, the houses are falling down. And if we take a tour, we can see that there are a lot of timbers supporting the houses. and also, quite a few notices that the houses are being remodeled. What Elizabeth also tells me is that in this room, where the bed, me and a little bit more, came in, there were two bunk beds with bunk beds. That is, for 4 persons. However, they did remodel, there was a personal history in the family, which is why it was modified. And now they no longer get the income of 4 but of one. So it doesn't suit her. She said "Mauricio, I'd rather have the four bunks." "Obviously, the x4 income in dollars is good money here in Cuba." Well, Elizabeth here just cooked us a bean stew. And why is it yellow? Does it have curry in it? - No, that's pea. Pea. Ah, great. And this is fried yucca. Oh, yummy! - Yes, it is. See what that's like. - Learn! Learn... - Learn how to cook! Yummy. - Cuban food. And in Cuba. - And in Cuba. And this is what the plate looks like at the end. I still can't identify the stew very well. I asked him if it was chickpea or wheat and she said it is not. She's going to show us now. And well, it looks like this. It tastes spectacular, I've already had the honor of tasting it. Okay, that's the stew. It is a stew, isn't it? What's the name of the stew? - I don't know, here they call it chícharo. Oh, wow. Like some lentils, huh? And the other risk is, obviously, to stay in Cuba without internet. Having internet here in this country is a dilemma, that can be solved as easy as it is difficult. Buying a chip on the street costs you between 25 to 35 USD. However, Elizabeth... How cute! Rent chips for 20 USD for the duration of your stay. And besides, you have to add the balance. Which can be between 100, 200, 300 or 400 CUP, depending on what you use. To know very well the essence of Cuba, you have to know its buildings. Because, in Old Havana, these constructions, that are already considered a heritage of humankind are having quite a few problems Because many of them are about to fall. That, in fact, that's how people live here in Cuba. This is impressive. See how the roofs, mostly (or 100% of Old Havana), is covered with melamine. Now we just found a ladder. And we're going to try to climb as high as we can. So that you can see what Old Havana really looks like. With just enough I can get in... However, let's try to go up. This is quite dangerous. I think it's a house. Let's see... I think it's a house. So it looks like, this is Cuba. I can't even get in. It's pretty narrow for me... The risk of falling is too high... We must be careful. - Hey, who's there? Say, I'm a politician. I was imprisoned for 5 years, they imprisoned me because I'm against the system. Against racism, against abuse. This works on lots and buildings. - What is this, a water engine? It's an engine to extract water from the floor. - Okay, okay. Because people don't have water. The people don't have electricity, the electricity they take it away every day, 4 hours. - And is that always scarce or lately more so? Now, in the last few years, a lot. - Okay, I mean, it shows. It's very noticeable. - Of course it does. And the site, how is it different from any other building? - They are for people who are very poor. Okay, very vulnerable families, totally vulnerable families. Okay, okay. - It's not free. - You have to pay for it, you have to pay for everything. Everything is paid. In other words, it is a myth and a legend that they say that the government gives them everything. It was clear to me, it was seen, it was seen. I had mentioned something very clear, that the houses in Old Havana are falling down a little bit more and more. And an example of this, is this building that we have in front of us, which is one of the oldest in all of Havana and it is in this condition. Almost 500 years of history in this building. People live inside. And not only people live, on the first or second floor. Because we see that already practically the building is already dismantled. But underneath the building. And not only people reside there, but also animals are sold. Since, as we know, a large Afro-Cuban population also comes from Africa. And the religion here has a lot to do with Santeria. Therefore, animals are bought and sold inside. Obviously, to make rituals of their own religion. Coming to Cuba has always meant a taboo. For us Latinos, Cuba has always been a tourist reference highly enriching. But also with a history, throughout its years, since the Cuban Revolution, that literally changed the history of this country. And it paused. Because we are not going to deny that strolling and walking around Old Havana is to teleport to the 50's. 60's, 40's. Quite a unique story. A very unique essence of the Cubans. Who, by the way, over the years, through their migration, has carried all that essence, culture, identity and idiosyncrasy to other countries, making it possible that we can get to know the Cubans. From my personal point of view, being Peruvian, I am not going to deny when in the 70s and 80s there was a lot of talk of the Cubans in Peru. In fact, one of my family lived in Villa El Salvador. Which is an area where the Cubans arrived. and, practically, they were the ones who founded it as well. From the Cuban salsa, a good cigar, a good rum, let's get to know each other well and why there is a risk to come to this country as I did. Havana is like New York in the sense that, wherever you approach it, it's going to be a movie. I'm in the most touristy place, probably. Because this is historic for the whole Cuban identity. Which is sold abroad. The subject of old or open top cars, which are cars that arrived before the Cuban Revolution. And since then, Cuba stopped quite a lot of immigration and importation of cars from other countries. In the last few years, I will not deny that, at the time of coming here, as we saw, there are good cars, like an Audi. But, mostly, those cars are in the tourism business. We are in the Paseo del Padro and this is very normal, everyday. Finding old cars, from the 40's, 50's, 60's, 70's. This is the essence of Cuba. Greetings! Slush, right? - Slushy. Ah, look what we found! Cuban slush! - Cuban slushy, pure ice. Pure ice. And I see that the students from Havana come and take their time. For a good slushie. Or not? - Yes! Yes! - Yes! - Yes! - Yes! (cheering and applause) - Yes! To cool down. - Yes, it's very hot. - And to clear our heads, because school has got us fused... Well, we stayed for a while here, to talk with them. And get to know them a little more. Because we see the Havana of the great ones. But, before it's Havana of the big boys, it's the Havana of the boys too. What school are they in? [Name of school] It's a mix, right? You're from high school, freshmen here... - No, we're all the same. - From the same group. From the same group? - Yes. And what time do classes start? - Sometimes at 12 PM, sometimes later. - Uh-huh. I've seen the uniform, does every public school wear the same uniform? - Yes, we do. - Yes. Same uniform. Why aren't you in the same uniform? - Yeah, it's the same. - It's the same. - You can use it too. Ah, there's two. - Yes, there are. - Two types of uniform. And, when you were a student, did you also have the same uniform? - No, I didn't... I'm 75 years old. Okay, okay, there was no uniform. - No. Okay okay, very good. Anything you want to say? - Long live the Revolution! Let's see, Sixto, my slush, please. You're 75 years old. - Yes, I am. How long have you been making slushies? - I've been selling slush since I retired. 10 years. 10 years. Always here on the corner. You, practically, attend to tourists and locals. - Yes, whoever comes, I attend whoever comes. - To the Cuban, to the foreigner, to every human being who comes to buy from me. Perfect. Let me have the slushie, please. What flavors does the slushie come in? - Orange, I have pineapple, grape, strawberry, and that's it. Well, quite a few flavors. And do you share with me that now it's hot...? - Of course. very strong here in Havana. - It cools you down quite a bit. Ah, it's delicious... - Did you see how good it is? - Crushed ice. Very good. - Refreshes. Cool. - Sure. - Refresh refresh refresh. God thing. Officially in Old Havana and an important point about the risk now in Cuba is the shortage of products. The queues to buy in stores or in supermarkets by the Cubans. are getting bigger and bigger every day. And it gets longer. It is quite common to find queues in Havana at any time. Whether it's for rice, whether it's for basic necessities, or to buy even the lottery. It is quite notorious how here in Havana, in general, you see these queues. And one of the things that I haven't found so far because it's hard for me, I don't know if it's the place, maybe the product, is the typical beer here. Obviously we are going to try the rum. But we still need to try a beer and I think we just found it. Which is priced at 250 CUP. I hope it's not 250 USD, so I don't stay "misio", without money. Or "colmado", as they would say in Nicaragua. And this is a very traditional bakery. Well, 250 CUP for the last beer. Obviously I'm going to pay for it. I was thirsty and wanted something local. Cristal beer. Completely Cuban. Cuba's favorite. Let's drink it, what do you think? And I have something to tell you too. - Enjoy! Thank you! Let's see, I didn't know the expression "asere what a ball". is only used with very intimate people. And that most people think that it is a vulgar word or term. And I was told that the vulgar term is the quintessential vulgar term of all Cubans, not vulgar, let's say, 'colloquial', that they use it a lot and that also for a part of people it is badly heard and badly seen is... Erick, silence it. Ping@. Actually, ping@ is the penis, isn't it? Let's try Cristal beer. Which is Cuba's favorite. It's the last one we got. And it's time to open a good Cristal beer. We've been lucky to get it. It took me a couple of hours. I was late. I love beer. Believe me. And if you're Cuban, I'm enjoying it like you have no idea... I swear. It's in good throats. Let's try salsa dancing. Let's see, Carla, let's see. Gaining confidence. Gaining confidence! And if we had tasted a good Cristal, we would have to, to close this video, a good shot of Havana Club. A white one, 3 years old. Usually, here at Al Pirata they use it for a mojito or for the garfer. - Which they say out there is a signature drink. I hope they invite me, let's see if they make one then. Thank you! They say this is put here. And well, it doesn't end here. This has been my first day here, my first hours in Havana. I've been able to touch a little more history. I've been able to get in a little more. But in the next videos we are going to develop the topics better. So I know that this shot... Tremendous... Tremendous enjoyment, tremendous blow he has given me, but good. That's all for today's video I hope you liked it. Have you been able to get to know Havana from my point of view. Which one? - Well, this one here. It was a building. - Oh, it was a building and they knocked it down? The seawall part fell down. Oh... I mean, you guys were moved by the government itself. - Yes, that's right. And they assigned you a new house.
