let's get to the word of god uh it is as riley has said it is pentecost sunday uh pastor sloan mentioned to us this is the time of the outpouring of the holy ghost into the midst of the churches the birthing of the church and this morning at the first service we looked at acts chapter 2 uh at verses 14 through 41 and talked about pentecostal preaching and we saw some characteristics of the pentecostal preaching that ought to be in as a part of every experience of worship despite denomination but i want to look at acts chapter 3 today i'm led to acts chapter 3 and in acts chapter 3 and verse 9 you'll see some of your words that have literally blessed me and arrested my attention and won't let me go acts chapter 3 beginning at verse nine if you have it say amen i'm reading today from the national version of the holy word of god and this is what it says when all of the people saw him walking and praising god they recognized him as the man who used to sit at the temple gate called beautiful and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him that's enough amen praise god for his holy word you may be seated in the presence of our god when all the people time that his hours are shared together on this sunday morning i want to talk from the subject keep the party going keep the party going grateful for all the wheeler avenue members who have made their way from third ward to humble texas god bless you they never let me go anywhere by myself and i appreciate your presence in this place keep the party going have you ever been to a party i mean a good party my sister on the front row said uh-huh oh yeah others of us are too spiritual you don't want your pew partner to know you've been to a party well there's some people in this room tonight today who know what it means to go to a good party as a matter of fact there's some people in this room today who knows what it means to throw a good party come on i know you're sanctified and spiritual and now you know you got your church thing going right now but there's some people in this room today who can testify after the benediction yeah i know how to have a good time in a good party i know how to throw a good party and people like coming to my parties because there's something about the way we have parties that just literally transform lives somebody in the room knows something about a good party i know that you don't want everybody in church to know about it but there's some folk in the room today who know what it means to have your shirt sticking to your back have your hair sticking to your face you have to turn the lights on because you just refuse to leave when you know it's time to go somebody in here knows what it means to hang out at the club and then get up and go to church the next morning somebody in church knows something about a good party as a matter of fact there was a song written about it back in the day it went a little something like this celebrate good times come on see i know you knew it there's a party going on right here a celebration to last throughout the year so bring your good times and your laughter too we're gonna celebrate and party with you come on now celebration we're gonna celebrate and have a good time celebration we're gonna celebrate and have a good time it's time to come together it's up to you what's your pleasure everyone around the world come choo choo yeah okay you all know more than church songs at the loot the whole praise team was singing all these saints who were just saying good good you they singing celebrate good times i love it i love it i love it yeah there are folk in the room today who know what it means to have a good time at a celebration you know that when celebration takes place it's a time of frivolity and excitement you are not supposed to be just any old kind of way you're not supposed to be humdrum and boring you're supposed to be excited enthusiastic when celebration time comes around and i raise this dr sloan not to take us out of the extreme intrinsic intrinsic series serious portion of worship in which we found ourselves but i raised this today because one christian writer says that the kingdom of god is a party and i raised that today because there are some people in the room who know what it means to be a part of the kingdom of god and you know that the celebration in the kingdom of god is always supposed to be high and enthusiastic effervescent and enjoyable because when we come in contact with the lord he literally takes our lives to another level a level that is greater than anything we could have ever done for ourselves or that we would ever think to do for ourselves when you come into the kingdom of god the kingdom of god is joy and celebration and excitement and enthusiasm the kingdom of god is a party if you can come into worship and you can sit for a whole hour and a half and never smile never say amen never look amen you may need to reconsider whether or not you really are part of the kingdom but every time i hear the name jesus every time i hear about how good god has been it makes me want to celebrate good times come on is there a witness in church today who just needs the mention of his name i mean you don't need a whole lot of things you just need to hear that name and when you hear that name you recognize there's salvation in that name and there's peace in that name and there's joy in that name and that name is the name that is above every name that the name of jesus every knee shall bow and tongue confess that he is lord to the glory of the father today my brothers and sisters i've come to help us to keep this celebration going not just of pastor and people but of god and god's people who continues to do great things in our midst whereof we are glad i bring this for your consideration today because when we jump into our text at this book of acts called that chapter three we find out that there are two brothers who know what it means to celebrate the goodness of god their two brothers who have been deputized to keep the kingdom of god ever expanding and ever increasing these are preachers who have been hand-picked hand-selected by the lord jesus christ to ensure that everybody knows that he is able to save whosoever will call on his name these two individuals peter and john were in that trilogy of disciples peter james and john who walked up close and personal with the lord jesus christ had a significant relationship with him and watched him do great things in their midst and now that the resurrection has taken place and now after 50 days since the holy ghost has come and now they are continuing to carry on the work of the ministry they see the lord operating in them in ways they never anticipated let's back the thing up so you can understand the context so you'll appreciate the content if you read chapter one you'll find out that the lord jesus comes to them after he had been resurrected and 40 days after his resurrection he shows up with a whole group of brothers and sisters and he says listen here stay here until you get imbued with power from on high but you shall receive power after the holy ghost has come upon you and then you're gonna be my witnesses starting in jerusalem and then to judea then to samaria then to the uttermost parts of the earth and because your god keeps his word ten days later when the day of pentecost was fully come chapter two they were all in one place on one accord and suddenly there was a sound as a rushing mighty wind that filled the whole house where they were sitting they were all filled with the holy ghost began to speak in other tongues as the spirit gave them utterance and then peter stood up because there were some folk who had some under misunderstanding about what was going on they thought that because those folk were dancing and jumping up and running all around the place that they must be drunk but peter stood up and said hold up wait a minute these men are not drunk as you suppose but this is what was spoken of by the prophet joel in the last days god's going to pour out his spirit on all flesh your sons and your daughters shall prophesy your old men shall dream dreams and your young men shall see visions and for the next several verses in chapter 2 on pentecost sunday peter began to preach about that man named jesus he said he did great miracles and signs among the people and he came to save that which was lost and he made sure that whosoever called on the name of the lord would be saved you want to know why there's been so much celebration in this place today because one thing you can't take away from us despite whatever you do you can't take our salvation from us and when we realize we're saved it gets accompanied by joy that's why these people keep jumping up and sitting down jumping up and sitting down because they got the joy of the lord which is their strength that's why some folk just couldn't wait to get to church this morning because they wanted to hear one more time about how good god has been and the ways god has made can i find 10 or 12 church folk in every section who can celebrate when i think of the goodness of jesus and all he's done for me i don't need a praise team i don't need an organ preacher i don't even need a preacher to tell me my soul cries hallelujah i want to thank god for saving me and so these folk are excited on pentecost sunday and your bible says that after pentecost sunday they went from house to house breaking bread and keep continuing in the apostles doctrine and they did everything that was necessary to continue the expression and the explosion of the church of the lord jesus christ and by the time you get down to the last verses of the text you find out that the lord added to the church daily those who were being saved you just missed a good shout cue i said that god kept saving folk that it looked one way 16 years ago it looked a whole different way 16 years later because god kept adding to the church because the man of god kept preaching about that man named jesus and that's what happens church family that's what happens in chapter two but flip over to chapter three because in chapter three these same two men peter and john are on their way to the temple at the hour of prayer now you don't miss it in chapter two they've been celebrating they've been having a good time by the time you get to chapter 3 these same men peter and john are going up to the temple at the hour of prayer it's three o'clock in the afternoon they're going up for evening sacrifices known as tamid and while they're heading up to the holy city to the sacrificial place to make sacrifices unto the lord your bible says that before they can get into the temple they are confronted by a man who has been lame from his birth he is laying at the temple gate called beautiful and while he's laying at the temple gate called beautiful he is asking arms of everyone who goes into or comes out of the temple can't you see him can't you hear him can you hook a brother up can you help a brother out you got any spare change there he is sitting there at the temple gate waiting on the saints to come in and go out of the temple and he's asking them for arms as a consequence of the levitical law in leviticus 25 he cannot go into the temple because he can't walk watch this he can't walk and because he can't walk he can't worship and because he can't worship he can't work he can't walk he can't work he can't worship all he can do is wait on somebody to hook a brother up there he is he's at the temple gate called beautiful cane walk came work came worship all he's doing is waiting and by contextual implication we can deduce that the saints are not helping him they're literally walking over him walking away from him walking offside of him they don't want to be bothered with him if i had time to preach this from another subject i'd preach an ugly religion at a beautiful church but this my brothers and sisters is how some of us act even when we save to the bone and sanctified to the marrow they are walking over this brother they are not helping him and then peter and john come up to him and they and he asks them can you hook a brother up can you help a brother out got any spare change at which point peter says man look at us listen silver and gold have i none but such as i have give i unto thee in the name of jesus christ of nazareth rise up and walk okay there's about 15 folk in every section i got to make sure everybody's with me he looks at the man says silver and gold i don't have but such as i have give i unto thee in the name of jesus christ of nazareth rise up and walk okay the rest of us ain't shouting yet because you didn't read the next verse the next verse goes like this he took him by the hand lifted him up his feet ankle bones gained strength and he started walking and still some folk ain't walking and ain't clapping yet because you don't know that this man has been in this condition for an extended period of time when you read chapter four you'll find out he was lame for more than 40 years for more than 40 years he's never been able to walk he's never been able to work never been able to worship all he could do was wait on somebody to hook him up and now in one verse the lord has sent some man of god his way and now he's walking watch this and walking got so good to him that he couldn't just walk it out he started leaping and jumping and praising god i need to ask somebody has god ever done something so good to you you couldn't give him some ordinary worship you couldn't give him just ordinary praise sometimes it makes you want to leap for joy i need somebody in here to help me on a sunday morning to testify sometimes it gets so good it makes me want to holler and throw up both my hands here he is he is celebrating he's leaping and praising god and then he realizes dr sloan that now he can do what he's never been able to do before and so he decides i'm going in that temple today i'm walking up in that church today and when he walks up in the church that's where we picked up in verse nine all the people saw him walking and leaping and praising god they recognized him as the man who used to sit at the temple gate called beautiful and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him that's my story i'm sticking to it but can i unpack that thing for just a little while longer because if i unpack it just a little while longer i got a funny feeling and a sneaky suspicion that we'll leave out of here and we'll be able to keep the party going i don't want to i need two or three people who don't mind partying with me to help me i got some rope right here on these front rows thank you so much i feel your spirit but i need two or three more folk back in the back who don't mind testifying that i'm a party people too to celebrate good times come on [Applause] all right all right all right so how i hear you asking the question hi brother preacher how do i keep the party going i'm so glad you asked the questions i got three good answers for you and if you listen to these three good answers i promise i'll get happy sit in that chair i beg to get happy all by myself watch this the text suggests that if we gonna keep the party going you and i watch this church we need to maintain prayer as a priority okay okay okay i said we need to maintain prayer as a priority somebody say pray all right now if you were listening to me when i walked through the story you heard me say that peter and john are going to the temple when at the hour of prayer it's three o'clock in the afternoon and when they're going up to the temple at the hour of prayer they are making sure that they incorporate into their lives as preachers of the gospel as evangelists as leaders of the lord's church the necessity to have constant communion with the creator don't miss this church they are not going just for praise and worship they are not going for a revival service they are not going to hear some powerful preaching or some powerful teaching they are going for the express purpose to have a little talk with the lord a child of god you may not be celebrating about that but there are some folk in here who can testify that prayer will do something in your life huh they're just sitting on a pew on a sunday morning will not do i need two or three people in here who can testify you know something about the power of prayer and you don't have a problem telling anybody that when you talk to god god begins to talk back to you and he lets you know he is still in complete control and he's still working all things together for your good i need some prayer warriors right here right here to help me preach and testify that prayer still works [Applause] are you listening to me i said prayer still works i don't care how bad the situation gets i don't care how rough the circumstance becomes prayer still works i saw your pastor in one of those video montages he had on a red t-shirt with white letters it said hashtag pray and that my brothers and sisters is not just some social media gimmick that some way by which the people of god can be empowered and increased in joy despite the circumstances of their lives i need two or three people who know something about the power of prayer to testify that it still works and peter and john knew it worked because they had watched the lord jesus when they when he prayed i told you they're a part of the inner circle of disciples and they saw the lord when he had those intimate moments of prayer they watched him even on his last night of life when he went into the garden of gethsemane and he went in there and he said father if is possible let this cup pass from me but nevertheless not my will but thy will be done his boys couldn't stay awake they had been they'd have a long night that night but the lord after praying three times he woke him up and said brothers don't worry about it the angel has come and strengthened me and i'm ready for the journey now oh child of god may i please tell you that even if god doesn't change the situation he's able to change you in the situation and give you strength for the journey that's ahead quit asking him to take you off that job you need that job just ask him to give you the strength to deal with them demons and devils on the job so you'll be able to walk in that place and still believe he makes my enemies my footstool quit asking god to remove you from the job and just believe he prepares a table before me in the presence of my union [Music] [Applause] they had seen jesus praying and they knew he was able to do something as a matter of fact when he got ready to call lazarus forth from the dead he stood at the tomb of lazarus he said father i thank you that every time i call on you you hear me when he we got ready to feed the five loaves and two fishes to 5 000 people the bible says he took the loaves and fish and he lifted them up to god and he gave thanks isn't that what your mom and daddy taught you how to do if you got some old school parents they taught you before you eat one thing off that plate you better tell the lord thank you father i thank you for this food which i'm about to receive for the nourishment of my body in jesus name amen and if you have some real good old school parents they told you before you get in that bed tonight you better bow down beside your bed and pray and if you got old-school tendencies you prayed the same prayer i prayed now i lay me down to sleep i pray the lord my soul to keep if i should die before i wake i pray the lord my soul god bless my mama god bless my daddy god bless my teachers god bless my pastor in jesus name amen and if it worked when you were seven it'll work when you're 77. if it worked when you were 12 it'll work when you're 52 if you work when you were 15 it'll work when you're 65. the bible says if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray then i'll hear from heaven forgive their sin and heal their land [Applause] can i find two prayer warriors in here who can testify prayers still work the bible says call on me and i will answer you and show you great and mighty things that you know not uh they go to the temple doctor sloane at the hour of prayer because if we gonna keep the party going we got to maintain prayer as a priority my time is almost out but can i give you two more things not only must we maintain prayer as a priority but i submit and suggest that if we're going to keep the party going we got to minister to people on the periphery i said we got to minister to people on the periphery if you didn't get your shout in in point one you may have to wait till 0.3 because point two is the point of responsibility why since they walk up on this brother he has been lame from birth for more than 40 years he's never been able to walk and because he can't walk what else he can't work and because he can't work he can't worship all he can do is wait on some saint somebody who is going into a coming out of the temple to hook a brother but by contextual implication we can't deduce that they keep walking over him keep walking around him acting like they can't see him acting like they don't know that he is there you know how we do don't you fool yourself don't you act like i'm talking about everybody else i ain't talking about you we pull up to that red light and we do the best we can to keep our hands at ten and two acting like we don't see that brother that sister in our periphery you know what the periphery is that's the folks who ain't in the club the club or the crew that's the folk don't look like you don't act like you don't smell like you don't worship like you and you don't want them to sit by you when they come to church this my brothers and sisters it's the reality that many of us have that sometimes we walk over people we walk around people we walk as if we don't see people and jesus says i'm putting some folk in your path to see if what you do in there is going to matter when you come out here [Applause] you hooping man preach boy you preach and preach man they may not say man but you preaching now you preaching [Music] i am convinced on this sunday afternoon that the lord jesus intentionally put some people in our path to see if what we do in here is going to matter when we get out there [Applause] how dare you claim that you're a proud member of the luke and you still just as mean in 2018 as you were in 2016. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] how dare you say that you always at the loop you love your church you facetime and you're instagramming and you still can't speak to your mean co-workers [Applause] how dare you shout like you shout on sunday afternoon and then you go home and you just as ugly with your family as you would be with a hater [Applause] [Music] lord says i put some folk in your path to see if you're gonna be out there the way you act in here and so there he is he's laying at the temple gate called beautiful he cannot walk he cannot work he cannot worship all he can do is wait and here come these two preacher men and there they are and they say to him listen man i don't have what you want but i do have you better help me preach what you need i don't have what you have i don't have any money silver and gold have i none but such as i have give i unto thee in the name of jesus christ of nazareth rise up and walk no you're missing your shout cue he said i don't have what you're asking for ain't got no money excuse me i have better grammar than that i don't have any money ain't got no money but i do have something that money came by cause you think you need some money but what you need is the power that comes from a name that is above every name because that name will change your life forever [Applause] silver and gold i don't have but such as i have every time i get to that point like tim every time i get to that point that such as i have i remember growing up at the emanuel baptist church 8301 south damon avenue chicago illinois 6-0-6-2-0 but dr lk coverage was my pastor when i grew up at emmanuel i heard pastor curry when i was just a lad of a boy i heard him preach out of this very passage and when he got to that point such as i have give i unto thee he says listen here every christian has some such yeah every christian he said because somebody in here has been thinking preacher you must be telling me every time i see somebody i got to give them my money i got to give them that ain't what i said i ain't said that yet because that's not what the scripture says these boys didn't have any money but they had something greater than them than money could ever afford this man he said such as i have he says every christian ought to have some such you can't walk with the lord three and ten five five ten fifteen years and not have some such uh-huh your such may not be like my such and my such may not be like you're such but if you've been walking with the lord for a little while you ought to have a smile that'll brighten somebody's day you ought to have a hug that'll let them know they're not by themselves you ought to have a word of encouragement that lifts up their bowed down head you ought to have some presence that allows their tears to be dried from their faces is there anybody in here who can look back over your life and justify there were some folk who didn't have a lot of money but what they deposited into your life made a difference in your life even to this very day and you look back with great fondness and appreciation because god always put somebody in your life with some such such as i have i'm done give our unity in the name of jesus christ of nazareth rise up and walk church family i gotta get away from that but i got two i got one more thing to tell you if we gonna keep the party going you and i need to maintain prayer as a priority we need to minister the people on the periphery but i close when i tell you we need to maximize our power to produce possibilities yeah woo that's what i said i said we need to maximize our power to produce possibility okay i don't have any money but i got something that money came by here it is here it is in the name of jesus christ of nazareth rise up and walk okay there's a few folk calling i got the preachers and everybody gets it i'm hitting back the third war but i got to make sure that everybody in humble hears what i'm saying i ain't got no money but i got something money came by in the name of jesus christ of nazareth rise up and walk still ain't coming through yet still ain't coming through i got some folk ain't even flinched let alone move i said in the name of jesus christ of nazareth right okay you must not know what's in that name you must not know how much power is in that name you've been walking around all these years with a name that could do some things for you and you've been cussing folk out instead of calling on that name and i need to tell somebody at the luke church in humble that there's a name that's above every name that can do some things for you that will literally turn your situation around because in the name of jesus there is power to do what nobody else is able to do can i find somebody who's ever had to call on that name and you found out there's peace in that name and you found out there's joy in that name you found out there's contentment in that name their satisfaction in that name but most of all there's power in the name of jesus to break every chain to break every chain and can i find somebody who's ever had to call on the name jesus when you were sick and couldn't get well and you found out he's jehovah rapha the god who is our healer can i find somebody who was broke but you called on the name of jesus and some kind of way he extended your resources he made that e on the gas handstand for everlasting and you kept on going even though you knew you should have run out of gas a long time ago i need somebody in the building today who can look back over your life and begin to testify all i have needed his hand has provided because i called on that name and he put running in my feet and clapping in my hands enjoying my heart a new song in my mouth ought to thank god for jesus your elder brother your redeemer and soon-coming king and if you know something about jesus you know he is able to do exceeding abundantly above all you can ask or think and as a consequence of the power in that name peter lifted out his hand and lifted that man up his feet and ankles gained strength he began to walk around and then he began to leap for joy and then he went into the temple and when he went in there all the people recognized him as the boy who used to not be able to do anything but now he's leaping and jumping and praising god you know what happens at the luke folk who ain't never been in here found out that jesus can turn their lives around and when they come in here don't you stare at them as if they don't belong don't you scorn them cause you know something about their past i wish i had two or three people who know something about this situation who understand that all the people had wonder and amazement at what had happened to him the greek word is ecstasy they literally got ecstatic they got excited because they realized that the boy used to be lame but now he's leaping and i need two or three people in here who can remember your history when you weren't as spiritual as you are now when you weren't as spiritual as you have been over the last two years to look back over your life and see what god has done and begin to celebrate the goodness of the lord is there a witness in here that once i was walking around moping and depressed but when i came in here this morning my head was lifted up my hands have been in the air cause god's been doing great things whereof i am glad and i feel like going a little higher from somebody in the building can look back over your life and see some addictions that you once had but now that jesus has been working on your life he's produced some possibilities that nobody else could have produced i need somebody to look back over your life and begin to testify man if you knew me back in the day you wouldn't believe that i'm sitting up in church with a bible in my lap and i am on my phone you wouldn't believe that i keep on praising god the way that i do because back in the day i wasn't thinking about god but now that he's working on me and now that he's maturing me i can testify every time i turn around he keeps on making ways for me can i get three people in here who can praise god for the great things he's done who can leap for joy because he keeps making a way you can clap your hands lift up your own voice and give god the glory but is there anybody in this church who can testify i really don't need anybody praising with me because when i think of the goodness of jesus and [Music] thank god for saving me wait everybody's praising but they are not praising god for what god did for them they are praising god for what god did for him and you know you're growing up in your praise with all your praise ain't bout you but you can look at your name and see how god is blessing your neighbor and praise god for healing them for praise god for producing possibilities in their life find somebody and say this pray is for you this praise is because god is blessing you this praise is cause you don't look like what you've been to this praise is for my pastor this praise is for my first lady this phrase is gonna all things work together for the good for the good we'll celebrate hello man it's time to party celebrate good times come on come on come on [Music] come on [Music] to pull you through [Music] so [Music] [Music] do [Music] i got it i got it i'm oh is [Music] [Music] [Music] now let me see you do
