hi there my name is Annette with Sunbeam fabric art not too long ago I did a fat quarter holiday quilt and today apparently fat quarters lend themselves to Holiday quilts in my mind anyway and I'm back with another Fat Quarter Christmas quilt so come along with me today and I'll show you what I did I've got a little notebook that I keep ideas in I've been playing around with this idea idea for oh a few weeks now it's basically some kind of brick quilt I'm making one color in the center of the brick and then a different contrasting color around the outside of the brick now ignore that cutting guide I drew it incorrectly and the very first Fat Quarter I cut I cut it wrong I'll leave my cutting instructions in the detailed description but if your fat quarters are bigger than 17 by 20 feel free to adjust it now this is not what I am using but I wanted to show you this Fat Quarter came out of a package a bundle that I bought really pretty fabric isn't it but I wanted to measure it I wanted to say to you as an audience most fat quarters are supposed to be 18 in by 21 to 22 in to be on the safe side I trimmed all my uh Fabrics my holiday Fabrics down to 17 by 20 so they would all be exactly the same what you will see me doing here as I cut apart some fat quarters I'm layering a contrasting Fat Quarter with a lighter different Fat Quarter and you can stack these as high as you feel comfortable cutting with with your rotary cutter set up I am stacking them four at a time what you will see me doing is cutting four strips from the left hand side I'm going to cut them 3 in wide so these strips are going to measure 17 by 3 in the remaining piece measures 17 in by 8 in I'm cutting in in half into two 4in strips then I'm going to trim two 3 in by 4 in pieces off of the bottom all right now I'm going to rearrange these I'm taking the pieces that are measuring 4 by 11 in those are the center of my brick next I'm going to just flip one little piece so you can see how these are going to look now on this one I'm going to leave the center that cute light green Fabric and change all the other ones because as I put all these together I'm going to get two opposite brick blocks so that is our basic block I'm going to go through the rest of my 17x 20 in pieces and cut them according to plan once I had them all stacked up to my left I grabbed my first set kept it together and what I'm doing here is stitching that 4X 11 in inch piece first and I'm just putting the two bookends of the opposite color one on the right side one on the left side you can see I'm keeping my little uh cheat sheet handy I'm going to chain piece as much as possible so here you can see I'm sewing that right hand side onto all of these 4 in by 11in pieces first then I'm going to flip the blocks around and Stitch the fabric on the opposite side [Music] once I had those chains all separated I went ahead and pressed the seams [Music] open the next step step is to stitch these long pieces to each side but remember we cut 17in strips now that we've sewn two seams those strips are really only needing to be 16 in so for each set I took the time to trim 1 in from those long strips again I'm chain piecing these strips to the right hand side of my brick then I'm going to flip all the units around and Stitch another strip to the opposite side since my Center is 4 in and my strips are 3 in I don't have to press one side open before stitching the other side I can just press it all at one time I continue the same process with each set I Trimm that extra inch off my 17in strip to cut them down to 16 first I created the inner brick and then I added those long strips for the outer [Music] brick well I was being super super careful but that wasn't careful enough because I ended up sewing one whole set incorrectly I put the wrong strips around the brick so I had to pick out all the seams and fix that and swap out the strips and the bricks I'm using a little tape to get the little tiny uh pieces of thread off of my [Music] fabric when I was envisioning a layout for this I thought it was going to be just random light and dark but as I started laying it out on the floor I decided I didn't really like where it was going the Reds kept ending up next to each other um I couldn't figure out how to get it to be light dark light dark other than my old standby which is putting everything diagonally so here you see I'm putting the same Fabrics diagonally across this quilt so then no two Fabrics will be right next to each other I am picking up each column and when I get to the end of it I'm putting in a clip on the top and the left hand side so I will be able to keep them in the same order so my first column has one clip plus a clip on the left my second column has two clips plus a clip on the left my third column has three Clips plus a clip on the left and same with my fourth column and this way I'm going to keep them all [Music] straight starting with column one I'm taking my very first block that's the one with the Clips in it and I'm going to just put the second block right sides together just flip it right over and Stitch that seam and then I am going to chain piece the foll following uh the following blocks three and four and then five and six together and then seven and eight together each column has nine I left that ninth block till the very end [Music] that ninth block is over to the side now I'm separating the chain now I'm going to take my block one and two unit still got those clips on the left hand side and I'm going to take the block three and four unit place that right sides together to stitch that right hand seam next I'll Stitch the blocks that are 5 + 6 and 7 + 8 together then I'll Stitch all those first eight blocks together and finally I will add that ninth block and here's a little tip I've got all my first eight blocks together and you can see there are my clips for Row one left hand side well the tail end of this which is the eighth block is long enough I can just flip it around without breaking my thread and add that ninth block [Music] now this First Column is all done I'm going to keep those clips in it while I set the column aside then I'm going to get started on columns 2 3 and four [Music] [Music] once I had all the columns finished it was time to start joining them together I start started by laying column four on the left and column three on the right then I place them right sides together next I use the nesting technique to match up my seams where my blocks meet and I'm using a clip to hold that seam in place until I can get to the sewing machine and now that I'm going to be joining two columns together I'm removing the clips that indicated column 4 so I can stitch on that side this is a good time to double check your layout before you Stitch that seam I clipped column one to column two as well and then I took both of these sets to the sewing machine chain and Stitch the [Music] seam next I took these two units put them right sides together and clipped my seams once again if you find that your units are getting a little too heavy and the quilt's getting a little too big you may want to add extra clips or even pins to hold it all together while you put it through the sewing [Music] machine well this is going to make a really cute Christmas quilt for someone this is an interesting layout though because it can be modified to any size if you're starting with yardage or you've got even layer cakes you could maybe cut the layer cake into half and then make each half a brick if you wanted to make little tiny bricks um so it could be modified any way you want to one thing I thought about doing was putting a small maybe like a 1 in border around each of my bricks and then attaching them all together um I Didn't Do It um but I think I might try this uh plan again sometime and do the surround of a white a small white border around each brick and see what happens this quilt went together in about 5 hours so it's super super easy super fun and as always I really want to thank you for joining me today I love sharing these ideas with you and I hope you enjoyed it hope to see you back again real soon
