well i'm happy to report i survived another season of travel it is a great honor to speak at churches and events across the country but i got to tell you there's no place i'd rather preach than right here at oak hills on one of the legs of my journeys i broke my glasses so i decided to order some glasses that would not break some good sturdy ones well when i got home and showed these to my daughters they said that these are cool glasses that i am really in style that i'm right on the on the edge of trends i beg to differ and i dug around and i found this photograph of me in the fourth grade i think that i've been in style already in my life you know you're getting old when trends come around yet again so hang on to all your glasses folks you're going to need them someday and you know you're getting old when you get multiple chances to talk about a favorite subject which is the subject that we're going to be discussing today the subject of worship if you're a guest or new to oak hills let me explain that we're working our way as a church through the 30 core competencies of the christian faith we're using the believed book as compiled by randy frazee and this weekend we ask the question how do i honor god in the way he deserves we want to have a prayer before we continue our message and in our prayer we're going to pray as we do each week for a congregation that's participating with us in this believed study this week we're offering prayers specifically for pastor dwayne lowe in the new life fellowship let's pray together almighty and gracious god we praise your name we pause and consider your splendor that you have always been and you always will be and that out of the out of the kindness of your heart you expressed your love in creating people and out of the extreme mercy of your heart you expressed your love in sending your son jesus christ to live on this earth and be a sacrifice for our sins father we pray that today you would draw us closer please closer to that message for pastor dwayne lowe and the new life fellowship we pray as well asking your blessings upon them and every work of their hands please forgive the sins of our speaker they are many and help us to see christ jesus christ through christ we pray amen let me describe a scene to you and then come back to it at the end of the message an old man walks down a florida beach the sun sets like an orange ball on the horizon and the waves slap the sand the smell of salt water stings the air the beach is vacant no sun to entice the sun bathers not enough light for the fishermen so aside from a few joggers and strollers the gentleman is alone he carries a bucket in his bony hand a bucket of shrimp it's not for him it's not for the fish it's for the seagulls he walks to an isolated pier that is cast in gold by the setting sun and he steps out to the end of the pier and the time has come for his weekly ritual he stands and he waits and soon the sky becomes a mass of dancing dots the evening silence gives way to the screeching of the birds and they fill the sky and cover the moorings they're on a pilgrimage they have come to meet the old man and for a half hour or so the bushy brown shoulder bent gentleman will stand on the pier surrounded by his feathered friends until his bucket is empty but even after the food is gone the birds still linger they linger as if they're attracted to more than just food they perch on his hat they walk on the pier and they all share a moment together who is this man and how do we explain this moment i'll answer both of those questions at the end of the message and i'll also tell you how his story illustrates the theme of our weekend study the theme of worship we turn an important page in our believed book this week having spent 10 weeks considering what to think and how to think we now ponder how to act some of you have been waiting for this some of you go getters task oriented folks are saying to yourselves finally i get to do something enough of this pondering of platitudes and thinking about doctrines finally i get to do something well not so fast before the saint is called to roll up the slaves we are called to bend our knees and the primary purpose of the christian is to worship we are first and foremost called to be people of worship the key idea for the week i worship god for who he is and what he has done for me we worship openly publicly joyfully we declare that god is good as the psalmist announced in our key verse come and let us sing for joy to the lord let us shout aloud to the rock of our salvation let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song this verse contains the elements of worship look at it worship is corporate let us sing together worship is vocal let us sing together with music and song it is christ-centered and god-honoring we sing to the rock of our salvation the first and appropriate response of the saint to our salvation is the act of worship i like randy's paragraph on the top of page 176 page 128 in the student version as we read in chapter 1 the first key belief in the christian life begins with god it is only logical that the first key practice in the christian life is worshiping god when we worship we are taking the revelation about the one true god father son and holy spirit and reaffirming our belief that he is involved in the in in our lives and wants to be in a relationship with us as we do this the amazing truths about god move from concepts in our head to cries of our hearts when we worship god for who he is and what he has done for us it not only cements our confidence in god as we approach each day and situation but it also enables us to receive his love when we receive god's love in our hearts we begin to see the world differently as people made in god's image now when we think about worshipers in the bible we often think about someone like david in the book of psalms or the apostles in the book of acts but i would like to propose a different example an example from the gospels i've never seen it listed as a passage that is an example of worship but i think it should be read it and see what you think matthew chapter 15 jesus left there and went along the sea of galilee then he went up on a mountainside and sat down great crowds came to him bringing the lame the blind the crippled the mute and many others and laid them at his feet and he healed them the people were amazed when they saw the mute speaking the crippled made well the lame walking and the blind seeing and they praised the god of israel jesus called his disciples to him and said i have compassion for these people they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat i do not want to send them away hungry or they may collapse on the way many times i wish the new testament writers had been just a bit more descriptive this is one of those times matthew says and he healed them what a short phrase to describe what must have been an astonishing and astonishing series of events let your imagination go can you see the scene can can you imagine the was blind man seeing his wife for the first time his eyes gazing into her tear-filled ones like she was the queen of the morning can you can you envision the man who had never walked now walking don't you know he wanted to dance a jig and run a circle and don't you know he did both what about the mute who could suddenly speak can you picture him sitting by the fire late into the night and talking as long as anyone would listen singing and singing everything and anything he had ever wanted to say and sing [Music] what about the deaf woman who could now hear what was it like when she heard her child call her mama for the first time for three days it went on three days three days 4 000 people person after person crutch after crutch smile after smile no record is given of jesus preaching or teaching or instructing or challenging he just healed matthew says the people were amazed when they saw the mute speaking the crippled made well and the lame walking and the blind seeing 4 000 amazed people each one telling a story grander than the one prior and in the midst of them all is jesus jesus smiling jesus receiving jesus enjoying every minute then matthew again the great economizer of words gives us another phrase on which i wish he would have elaborated he said they praised the god of israel wonder how they did that it became a worship service the healing service became a worship service how do you suppose this looked i feel more certain of what they didn't do than what they did i feel certain that they didn't form a praise committee i feel certain that they didn't mumble or grumble or sing with great reluctance i'm very confident they didn't doze off in between songs i'm very confident they didn't elbow each other and say how long is this going to last when are we going to get to go home i seriously doubt if they wrote a creed on how they were to praise this god they had never worshipped i cannot picture them getting into an argument over technicalities complaining that some of the songs were too traditional or some of the songs were too contemporary i just can't imagine them splitting into factions according to worship styles and preferences i have a feeling that no one tried to strut or show off or sing so loud that they were noticed or impressed other people in all probability this was one of the purest worship services in all of history they just did it they just did it each one in his or her own way with his or her own heart just praise the god of israel maybe some of them fell at jesus's feet maybe some of them applauded him maybe some recited psalms that they had learned from their youth maybe they went up onto the hillside and looked into the sky they worshiped i can picture a mom and dad standing speechless before the healer as they held their newly healed baby i can envision a leper standing in awe at the one who took away his terror i can imagine throngs of people pushing and shoving wanting to get close not to request anything or make any demands or even ask any questions they just wanted to say thank you maybe someone even tried to pay jesus but what payment would have been sufficient maybe some tried to return his gift with another but but what gift would adequately express the gratitude they felt that day all the people could do was what matthew tells us they did they praised the god of israel you see worship is when you praise the god of israel worship is when you're aware that what you've been given is far greater than anything you can give worship is the awareness that were it not for his touch were it not for his kindness were it not for his intervention you'd be hurt broken bitter worship is this half-glazed expression on the parched face of a desert pilgrim as he discovers that the oasis is not a mirage worship is the hallelujah that just refuses to be silenced how's your hallelujah level these days the psalmist says come let us sing for joy to the lord let us shout aloud to the rock of our salvation let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music in song this passage is almost like a table of contents for a book on worship look how the key words of this verse suggest key principles of worship first worship is corporate let us sing together let us sing together it is certainly appropriate for us to have our moments of worship in solitude it's it's yet equally important for us to come together to sing together to stand together to blend our voices together to worship together i believe something supernatural occurs when god's people gather to declare god's name you see we have this wonderful promise in the book of james resist the devil and he will flee from you draw near to god and he will draw near to you when we worship are we not resisting the devil when we resist the devil does he not flee from our presence if we desire that the devil flee from our communities from our neighborhoods from our cities does it not make sense then that large numbers of people would look for opportunities to come together and proclaim the name of christ satan will not linger where god is worshipped he will not so let god's people come together and worship from the perspective of the supernatural from the perspective of the heavenlies something profound happens when god's people come together in worship perhaps you've been in an airplane high up in the sky flying at night and you look down on a city and you can see the city lights coming up through the darkness i wonder if that's how our cities look when we're worshiping when a band of people come together in a congregation from the perspective of heaven there is a light a light of hope a light of god's presence a light of strength that lives up to the heavenlies when god's people come together when you bring your little torch of faith and i bring my little torch of faith and we bring them together and we create this bonfire of belief as we worship and the devil who will not linger where god is worshipped turns and leaves and looks for another place to haunt there's something supernaturally powerful about corporate worship so i would encourage you take full advantage of it take full advantage of it there are times i understand when you cannot make it to a church service sickness travel complications a variety of factors can keep you away from a corporate gathering but don't let them keep you away often i love our online worshipers and i have to take advantage of it myself sometimes when i'm away and unable to attend a worship service and i love to log online and worship online but even to you who worship online let that be the exception and not the rule gather with god's people let your children experience what it's like to hear the voices of god's people let your neighbors see you gathering with god's people and most of all let god hear you as you join your voices with the voices of other believers in worship be a part of the corporate declaration let us sing together and let us sing for joy here's a good point worship is vocal it's vocal the psalmist says let us sing together with music and song what a great idea god had when he invented music how gracious of him to create the whole idea of harmony and melody music is to the ear what a rainbow is to the eye or perfume is to the nostril it it just bypasses all rationale and just goes quickly into our heart and it touches us music moves us so how appropriate that we use this wonderful gift to move each other toward christ when we sing together with music and song god is honored and our soul is fed please note the text does not say let us sing together with skill and perfection our singing is not graded by heavenly judge but it is received by a heavenly father so let us sing worship is corporate worship is musical and most of all worship is christ centered it is god honoring the psalmist says sing to the rock of our salvation with thanksgiving we sing to god we sing to the rock of our salvation not because he needs to hear it but we need to express it worship is this voluntary act of gratitude offered by the saved to the savior by the healed to the healer by the delivered to the deliverer and if you or i can go days without feeling an urge to say thank you to the one who healed us delivered us and saved us then we would do well to remember what he did for us would do well to remember the story of the old man on the pier he couldn't go a week without saying thank you his name was eddie rickenbacher and if you happen to have been alive in october of 1942 you remember the day that he was reported missing at sea he had been sent on a mission to deliver a message to general douglas macarthur with a hand-picked crew and a b-17 known as the flying fortress he set off across the south pacific but somewhere in the journey he became lost and the fuel ran out and the plane went down and all eight members went into the water they escaped into life wraths but they battled the weather the water the sharks the sun but most of all they battled starvation after eight days their rations were gone and they ran out of options it would take a miracle for them to survive and the miracle occurred after an afternoon devotional service the men said a prayer and tried to rest as rickenbacker was dozing with his hat over his eyes something landed on his head he would later say that he knew it was a seagull he didn't know how he knew he just knew the seagull meant food if he could catch it and he did the flesh was eaten the intestines were used as fish bait and the crew survived what was a seagull doing hundreds of miles away from land only god knows but whatever the reason rickenbacker was thankful as a result for much of the rest of his life every friday evening this old pilot walked to the pier his bucket full of shrimp and his heart full of thanks you know we've much in common with eddie rickenbacker we too were saved by a sacrificial visitor we too were rescued by one who came from only god knows where and we like the captain have every reason to look into the sky and say thanks let's do that let's pray together and so heavenly father as we rededicate ourselves to be people of worship we ask you to please forgive us for worshiping the small deities of this world turning our attention away from you and on things which will only rest and corrode we ask that you stir within us a deep desire to worship you in spirit and in truth with hearts full of gratitude this is our prayer through jesus christ amen [Music]
