I have to say that Valve really understands what players want. Although the name of Steam Deck OLED just adds an OLED , it is really not as simple as replacing an OLED. It can be said that it is both inside and out. I mentioned it before. Almost all the flaws have been changed. I don’t know if you still remember that there was a report in PC Gamer in March this year. They interviewed the product manager of Steam Deck, and the main message was that Valve has been using this LCD for more than a year. Will you ever release the OLED version that players are banging on like crazy ? The product manager replied, um... I know that the LCD screen is a bit common now , but it is not as simple as replacing the screen with OLED. OLED itself has a lot of problems, such as in low light. Compared with the grayscale control, the maximum brightness is not enough for LCD. It is still relatively easy to choose Balabala. I think this interview is really interesting. If you go back and watch this interview now, you will really be curious about how he held it back in the first place. After all, he must have been at that time. Knowing the existence of Steam Deck OLED, if he could, he would be eager to return. We not only replaced it with an OLED screen, but also directly customized a 90Hz OLED. The brightness was directly increased from the 600 nits of the previous generation to the top 1000 in the market. nit , we not only changed the screen, we also changed the processor to a 6nm process and replaced it with a Wi-Fi 6E network card. The key point is that the battery was directly increased from 40Whr to 50Whr. Even on the premise of increasing the power by 25%, I also reduced the weight by 29%. And the most important thing is that I didn’t increase the price. The original 512GB LCD version in Taiwan was priced at 21,980 yuan. Now the OLED version has been upgraded to 1TB and it is also 21,980 yuan. It’s really not that simple. I said V Club, you are delaying this update. I completely give it to you. I'm convinced , I've said so much . In this episode, we want to talk about every detail of the improvement of Steam Deck OLED and completely go through all the data test results to see how much better or worse we try to list them for everyone's reference. Get ready. Let’s get started, okay, okay. I believe you are ready to watch us run various tests like crazy and fill up your screens with data. Don’t worry, don’t worry . In fact, Steam Deck OLED has not only changed a few hardware appearances, it has also gone through a lot of changes. For fine-tuning , I will talk about the three changes that I think are most noticeable. First, all the buttons have been optimized. First, the mushroom head Valve has slightly enlarged the size , and the OLED version of the mushroom head has replaced the previous matte surface treatment. It was changed to a concentric plastic patch and then deepened the concave degree, so the hand feel is improved very much. In the past, this kind of mushroom head required a little force to stabilize the hold. If it is too light, it will easily slip off, but the OLED version is completely It is not very comfortable to use and is more stable to operate. However, because of the concave edge, the edge will have a bit of a gripping feeling. The R1/R2 buttons feel crisp and crisp. I have shared the Steam Deck in the comments before. The R1/R2 is a bit too soft and dull. The OLED version has also changed the feel of the keys . You should be able to clearly understand the difference in sound when you listen to the two. Then you listen to the volume keys. Basically, all the keys are oriented in the direction of clear and crisp feedback. It can be said to be a comprehensive improvement, except for the R4/R5 with back buttons. I don’t know if this is an isolated case, but the one I have is really a bit too tight. Although it is rarely used , I think I will have the opportunity to use it in the future. There are fewer , and for friends with strong DIY skills, I also directly disassembled my Steam Deck OLED to help everyone confirm that this time the R1/R2 module is different from the previous generation design , which means it is different from the old Steam Deck design. Therefore, it is not as simple as replacing the buttons. Friends with strong DIY skills should not think about buying new buttons to replace the old ones. After reading the appearance, let’s look at the biggest highlight of this time: the screen, Steam Deck OLED. The biggest improvement this time is to replace it with It has a top-notch OLED screen in the handheld industry. The screen size has also been enlarged from the 7-inch of the previous generation to a more full-sized 7.4-inch. At the same time, V Company is really serious. This screen is not only OLED but also supports a high screen refresh rate of 90Hz. This performance is more than enough. Power saving and smoothness are taken into consideration. However, the resolution is still maintained at 800p. The design has not been increased. After all, the peak performance has not been greatly improved . But the top part is here according to the official label. This OLED The screen can reach a peak brightness of 1000 nits , but you can't just watch the official standard on Bonnie's channel. Our actual measurement is more accurate. After our actual measurement , the screen 's full white screen brightness can reach 500 nits under SDR , and it can be triggered by strong light . It reaches the officially announced 600 nits and is a stable full-frame 600 nits. This is actually very powerful . Under HDR, we can release the brightness limit to 1000 nits. We don’t need regular screen testing software and directly open Cyberpunk 2077. To measure the real maximum game brightness, we directly faced the sunlight and measured it. Even with more than 1/3 of the strong light display area, the Steam Deck screen can still break through 1000 nits. Even if it challenges the full screen strong light, it can reach 900, which is close to 1000 nits performance. I think Valve’s peak value of 1000 nits is really polite. There is still room for the peak value to go up. It should be locked at 1000 nits for power consumption control. This screen is really very high . But if you look at the data, you don’t have a good idea. Friends , let’s directly compare the display effect of the old LCD. I’ll also put a few samples here for your reference. Back to the show, by the way, the color gamut and color accuracy must be tested in detail for everyone, right? Someone was asking about our equipment earlier. Is it true that we are using UPRtek’s measurement solution? It is also a machine commonly used by display developers in many panel factory production lines. Plus the additional third-party measurement software we purchased, the total price is about US$10,000, which is really a big loss. Fortunately, the hardware and software have great support from all parties. I am very grateful. In addition, regarding accuracy issues, this kind of professional equipment requires regular return to the original factory for paid calibration. Normally, it costs several hundred dollars and costs money here. I really want to thank UPRtek for supporting the creators of Taiwan's measurement technology and offering discounts. Equipment that has been calibrated will get a calibration certificate like this. The one we have is a calibration that was just completed in April 2023. The machine is still very new , so the accuracy of the measurement is relatively guaranteed. I won’t waste everyone’s time and will go directly to the actual measurement results. We have also followed the suggestions and revised the data presentation method to be simpler, clearer and easier to understand * In the mobile phone and laptop categories, we will mainly test the two most mainstream sRGB and DCI-P3 indicators to see the results . First look at sRGB and there are no surprises. Steam Deck The sRGB CCT can be completely covered and covered up to 100%. The Delta E at this time is about 6700K, and it can also reach <2. We have said that <2 means it is accurate enough , and the Steam Deck OLED under DCI-P3 I have also given the DCI-P3 CCT that can completely cover 100%. It also falls around 6700K. At this time, the Delta E is also very good , only 1.61. It is accurate enough for ordinary users. Mainly look at these two groups first. In addition, we also tested this The DCI-P3 ratio of an OLED can indeed reach 109%, which is in line with the 110% indicated in the official specification sheet. However, this mode of manually triggering the maximum color gamut means extra color overflow for color gamut limitation. See what we discussed earlier about the corresponding limit. After shrinking the measured Coverage, I will also compare the complete test results of the new model and the old model. I can see that the Steam Deck OLED has been comprehensively improved in terms of peak brightness and all color gamut coverage indicators , especially in Delta E color accuracy from the old model. The unqualified 5.6 jumps directly into the top level <2. The performance of this screen is indeed not blown out . Both the data and the actual effect are improved. Finally , if you also like this kind of data measurement program, please subscribe to Bonnie to help you. It's really important to us. You can also directly support us through YouTube's super thank you button or become a channel member to have more power to complete practical test programs with reference value. Thank you in advance. Thank you very much . Since we have a machine in front of us, I also took you through the disassembly to take a look at the internal design . When it comes to disassembly , I have to give V a round of applause. They know that you all bought a small capacity and went back to replace it with a 1TB / 2TB SSD , so they did not help this time. You upgrade the disassembly and assembly experience by the way. First of all, in the previous generation, didn't I remind everyone that the screws are very easy to chip and should be pressed down carefully when disassembling? This time, I didn't use them anymore and used more solid screws. I also changed them from cross to star-shaped. In actual testing, T6. T5 is also okay , and V Company is very considerate. The length also helps you unify the specifications without dividing the length. Then it takes care of the spiritual level for you. All the internal parts have been blackened and are pleasing to the eye (let me show you the comparison with the previous generation). And if you want to replace a large-capacity SSD, it is basically a three-step process . Step 1: Remove the cable connecting the small board. For friends who have not removed it, simple instructions: gently pick it up and slowly pull it out. Do not use force to achieve miracles. Step 2: Continue to remove. Remove the screws and open the cover. Step 3 : Find the battery cable. Pull the handle with a little force to turn off the battery. Remind me again to turn off the power before operating . Finally, you can see the SSD here. I can replace it with the same specifications by unscrewing the screws. It's 2230 , and next to it is the Wi-Fi 6E module. Let's look at some internal details. First of all, there are many thermal conductive patches on the back of this cover. The old model does not. The new model does not. I think one of the reasons is that. Take a look at the Steam Deck OLED replacement. With the new cooling module and fan, we didn’t talk nonsense. We directly ran the Cyberpunk 2077 Steam Deck with the same recommended settings. After 20 rounds of benchmark tests, the maximum temperature on the back of the old Steam Deck reached 47.6 degrees. The new 38-degree air outlet is even better here. Obviously, the old model was 56 degrees Celsius and the new model is only 44.3 degrees Celsius. In other words, after about half an hour of heavy load, the temperature of the air outlet differed by more than 10 degrees . To be able to achieve this temperature control difference is not only the increase in heat dissipation , but also the power consumption of the processor itself. The reason for the decrease is that although Steam Deck OLED has not replaced the new APU architecture, so it looks similar from the specification sheet, but the process has evolved. They have changed from the original 7nm to 6nm , and the built-in 16GB LPDDR5 memory is also The version changed from 5500MT/s to 6400MT/s , so how much is the difference? We won’t look at the official data and directly measure the difference. First, let’s look at the power consumption. We measured the recommended gears of Cyberpunk 2077 Steam Deck. Both can be achieved when FSR is turned on. The average peak performance of about 50FPS can be said to be close to almost the same, but the focus is still on the power consumption. Let’s look at the chart directly. The average power consumption of the old Steam Deck is 25.4W , while the Steam Deck OLED is only 22.3W . In other words That is to say, the power consumption was reduced by 14% under almost the same peak performance. When we tested again and FSR was turned off, the results were very similar. The power consumption was also reduced by about 14% , and the difference in power consumption under medium load was even greater . When testing Forza5 with low image quality and turning on FSR, under the same image quality settings, the old model has 49FPS, and the OLED version has 52FPS, which is slightly higher. However, at this time, the power consumption of the OLED version is only 15.6W , while the old model has 52FPS. 20.6W means that the power consumption has been reduced by 32%. The frame rate is still slightly higher. This result can only show that V Company not only changed the manufacturing process, but also made a better power consumption setting. Don’t forget about Steam. Deck OLED not only reduces power consumption but also increases battery capacity. We also specially found a Steam Deck LCD version with a battery cycle of less than 10 times. The top standard 512GB is compared with the top standard Steam Deck OLED 1TB, which is also practical. Cyberpunk 2077 was tested at the Steam Deck recommended setting of 200 nits . After 23 rounds of benchmark testing, the old Steam Deck dropped from 100% to 50% , while the Steam Deck OLED version still had 66%. % of the power , which means that the Steam Deck OLED version can use about 30% more time when the power is out. That is to say, when the performance is fully turned on, you can achieve more than 2 hours of play time, while the regular version is about 1 and a half hours , and the OLED display effect is obviously brighter and more transparent. We have also done a special feature before. That is, OLED can achieve visual effects similar to LCD with lower nits. So in actual play, my experience with the OLED version is not just 25% of the extended capacity. I think V Company has really met the expectations of many players this time . A more balanced choice for those who don’t care so much about extreme performance but more about gaming time . We also tested the Steam Deck OLED, which can also be held for a long time without being plugged in. The performance output is more than 20W, that is, whether it is plugged in or not. In most cases, the battery will not affect the peak performance. Finally, if you care about game performance, of course, don’t worry. I will share a few sets of test results here and note that all the following data are the default performance settings of the built-in battery. It is measured that if you limit the FPS to 40, the experience will definitely be more stable and better. First, use the Deck in Cyberpunk 2077. The recommended mode can reach an average of 33.9FPS before turning on FSR . The old model is 32.8FPS when turned on . After FSR , it can reach 50.6FPS. The old model has 50FPS, which has reached the peak state. When Forza 5 low image quality turns on FSR, the old model averages 49FPS and the new model 52FPS. God of War and God of War native image quality both limit 35FPS with FSR turned on. After that, the old model has 42FPS and the new model has 45FPS . The new model with low image quality and FSR is slightly higher. The new model can reach 53FPS . The old model is about 45FPS. CS: GO 2. We directly measured the high image quality and benefited from the OLED version. The screen update rate can reach 90Hz, so the frame rate is further improved. It was released to a maximum of 78FPS. The old model here is limited to a maximum of 60FPS. GhostWire: Tokyo opened the FSR new version and the maximum was 50 FPS. The old version was up to 46 FPS. The final APEX test was that the old model was also limited to 60Hz in the initial setting. The maximum can only reach running speed. At full 60FPS , OLED can release up to 90FPS. Overall, the peak performance limit of the two generations is similar. However, the overall power consumption of the OLED version can be reduced by more than 15%-20% , and the battery has also been improved from 40Whr. Up to 50Whr, for those who care more about playing time, Steam Deck is a very good choice at present. To some extent, it is also the only choice. It’s good. I ’ve looked at the appearance, looked at the screen, looked at the performance, and about who the handheld experience is suitable for . It is recommended that you go directly to the two complete reviews of Steam Deck and ROG Ally that we have done. You will have a clearer understanding . Today’s purchasing suggestions will focus more on Steam Deck and Steam Deck OLED. In fact, the answer is very simple. Buy new and not sell old . But I have also listed the main differences so that everyone can take a closer look at the differences between the two machines. Here I will compare the top-spec 512GB LCD with the top-spec 1TB OLED . First of all, the old model in the storage box is a general storage. As for the new model, you can take out another storage box that completely fits the handheld device and is thinner and lighter. Secondly, the buttons are fully improved this time, and the mushroom head is better to push and smoother . It also improves dust protection and reduces wear . If you are a player who wants to DIY a 2TB SSD or replace other components, the new screws are more durable and the internal cables are easier to remove . At the same time, the SSD has less problems with stacking and heat accumulation. The fourth screen can be directly moved to the top of the handheld device. One of the OLED 90Hz 1000nits can be said to have been directly pulled from Puppu to the dream specifications of 7.4 inches. It is larger and fuller, and the touch sampling rate has also reached 180Hz, which is more sensitive. The fifth APU has been upgraded from 7nm to 6nm, and the actual measurement is at least 15-20%. At this time, some friends are asking about the reduction in power consumption. Isn’t it changed from 7 to 6? The number has become smaller. How can it be an improvement? It should be a setback . Sixth, the new fan and cooling module have a 10-degree reduction under heavy half-hour load. The above gap: The seventh communication has been upgraded from Wi-Fi 5 to Wi-Fi 6E and supports Bluetooth 5.3. The eighth can buy 1TB of storage space from 512GB at the same price. The ninth battery capacity has been increased from 40Whr to 50Whr. Under the same conditions, it is about 30 More than % play time is increased and the weight is reduced by 29 grams. Tenth, few people say that the power cord has changed from about 1.5 meters in the old model to about 2.5 meters. This is very practical. You may just use other PD chargers. I came here to charge it, but I didn’t find that there were relatively few people talking about it. Finally, let’s talk about our expectations for the future of Steam Deck OLED . The first is, of course, the overall performance improvement. For V, OLED is a facelift without a new APU, which is expected, but so Steam Deck 2 OLED should have a new APU. I hope it can still maintain a beautiful energy consumption curve and improve peak performance . Secondly, I think this generation’s power consumption will be reduced, the battery will be increased, the temperature will be improved, and the gaming time will be extended. It's the right direction. Don't forget to always pay attention to energy consumption performance while increasing peak performance. I think if it can be improved to 3A and stable 50FPS for 3-4 hours, it will really be a great portable game console at this stage . Although it is currently By limiting the TDP , you can also achieve performance of more than 3 and a half. Okay, these are the quick and key test results of Steam Deck OLED. If you have any questions or want to know, please leave a message below to discuss together. I will discuss it at the end of the show. Share the external test for everyone’s reference. I am a donkey. See you next time.
