teaching job as you probably know that gives me an advantage over you I'll have a pretty good idea what you're up to I haven't had time to forget about when I was doing it myself or at least thinking about it since we're not going to learn any history today uh suppose we learn a little bit about each other there's nothing i' like better by the way this is my method for calling spot questions in excellent your attitude seemed to be sound however I afterward wrote the principal of the school where you did your student teaching I see would you care to see his reply in some ways it's most complimentary I don't suppose you'd like to hear my side of that it's obvious your classroom duties didn't satisfy you look I went to bat for a couple of kids because I thought I could straighten them out I still do and other words you became sentimental about individual problem cases individual kids I managed to get very close to them that make you more objective it's not easy for a teacher to be objective if he thinks kids at all somebody has to be I'm not going back on my decision to take you on Henry I just want to make it clear how we operate Harrison is a superior school it always has it I know it's ratings sir and I'm fighting to keep it that way and it isn't easy some of our transferred students are coming from schools that are practically vestibules of the juvenile detention home it seems to me those are the very ones you could help the most 99% of our student body are decent and hardworking it's my job to protect them what about the other 1% they're troublemakers I don't waste much time getting rid of them you're just bouncing back to the vestibules that's why we have a rule at Harrison and case of discipline or maladjustment is immediately referred to me it doesn't leave much up to the individual teacher judgment does it I can't afford to we're a long way from the Little Red Schoolhouse a teacher here is paid to teach not to be a psychiatrist a social worker or a pal Mr donlin if you want us to stay in watertight compartments why don't we just beam in our classes by remote control Mr Henry I don't understand uh you wanted to be at the board meeting by 4:30 that I could ever hope to replace a man like my brother he was a teacher wasn't he yeah he's a principal of the high school in our hometown he only had about 400 students but he knew every one of them and he did something for each of them one way or another Neil you can't be your brother and Harrison has over a thousand students and over a thousand rules do everybody hate them as much as I do rules are made to protect the teachers too I only wish I'd had them in the if you want to stay at Harrison want to not more than that right now I only have temporary custody of Eric after my little misund
