[Music] good afternoon guys Amagansett press coming to you from the village of Amagansett new york and today we are at the Amagansett free library we're going to take a look inside the library do a little tour of the building and just to give you a view of where we are right now this is Main Street I'm against it all right we're gonna head inside and see if the library has any issue with us taking some video inside so it's actually a pretty big library for this tiny little town I'm sorry village so Amagansett is located within the town borders of the town of East Hampton in New York let's say we have library hours here and they are open good news for us we're gonna have to talk quietly in here so respect everybody's right to peace and quiet so this is the little entry room here I guess the pamphlets and community information that kind of thing coatrack place for you to leave your hat I'll keep mine on it's freezing outside [Music] pardon me so here's the magazine section newspapers it's a little sitting room up here in the front like most places I'm sure at one point this was a private home kind of cool a little model ship here I'm against it free library Proclamation there's nobody around but they do call this the quiet reading room no cell phones all right so this is we came in the main entrance which is on the side of the building this is the side entrance which is on the front of the building hello all right I have an elevator there's a second floor we'll go up there shortly hello how are you good thank you so we came at a good time there's nobody here so we want to sturb anyone this is the children's Reading area I used to bring my son here when he was small a lot of DVDs and children's books pretty extensive collection some computers kids can use and you can also rent DVDs I'm rent DVDs borrow DVDs I should say you can search for what you're looking for here this is the adult section not adult section shouldn't have said that the grown-up section monitor doesn't sound good either way you know what I mean so yeah it's a nice library it's right on Main Street again right in the middle of ami anta which is tiny little village and like I was saying I remember my son was small it was nice to bring him here and get some DVDs back when people actually use DVDs and get some books and good times okay so this is the stairway up to the second floor nice and warm in here well this is cool low ceilings you literally just touch the ceiling right here and I'm not the first guy to get picked for a basketball team so plenty of plenty of books up here on the second floor - not surprising team section no no I need to check with you before I take pictures okay so we're taking video inside the building just to take video inside the building we're doing a little tour of the library okay it's a nice little building constructed before 1725 but here's the thing 501c3 okay and while we are a public space right like you're not a public space like a public library a public library is different from a 501c3 so this is not a public library we're a 501 C 3 we're in a society you have to yeah you have to speak in layman's terms to me because I'm not that small you need to tell me what you're doing I just did I told you I'm taking video we're doing a little tour of the library well that's what's the what's the difference I don't know I don't know okay this is my son he actually spent many many hours here when he was a child he graduated from school across the street this is his hometown stomping grounds and we're just that would be good oh just a little walking tour something to put in the archives you would like a copy the video absolutely sure I can do that if you'd like to give me a business card with an email address or some information I'd be happy to send you a copy I do not know no I don't do this for a living so it's not a business card first how's that you just asked me to send you a copy of the video and I said I'd be happy to I just told you what I'm doing usage I did I just told you my son grew up here spent many many a day here at the library is it for my big could beef well I don't know I mean I don't know what will happen to it okay so so here's why we're at an impasse okay you are in a building that is owned by a 501c3 you it's it's I don't understand all that all I know is this are your so I can understand well that's what I'm asking you so this isn't what you're saying is this is not a public free library it's not a it's not a public library it's a free library which means it's owned by an association okay which means it's not it's not government and it means that you don't have free access well I agree with you up to that point it is it is oh it is public access that doors open anybody that wants to walk in correct yes until you ask them to leave well I I guess I'm putting my hackles up because you're not being forthcoming I answered every question you asked me all right so let's try this how about you before thumbing with me what's your issue with me videotaping here in the I'm old so I say videotaping videoing here in the library recording better work not right now but anyway and if there are we should probably be speaking a lot softer we need you tell me there are people in this building who would be very feeling that they were being that's you have to give me that that's a little speculative because nobody I passed a couple of people nobody said a word except hello hi this is hard to miss yeah I mean I'm holding it right out here I have a camera bag on my back I'm not trying to I'm not trying to hide myself I'm not trying to videotape secretly I'm not using a pen camera I'm walking around with a two-foot stick in my hand what resistance see that's that's baiting that's passive aggressive what resistance I'm not resisting you with all of it if I wanted to resist your questions I could have just said I'm not interested in speaking to you I'm being very cordial when I'm answering every question you're asking me a very forthright I think you're looking for an issue okay so then we're good then we're not at an impasse I actually just walked through that door we've gone in this room and I was gonna walk around the rest of the second floor we did you want a babysit me I'm 50 years old you were well I mean I'm not asking you to come with me you're free to do whatever you like just so you know if you want to follow me around that's fine okay do you want to tell us anything about the building while you're doing that well because I would be very interested in knowing the history of the building okay I know the name it was not which explains the low ceilings okay when we opened it up to do the restoration we found that the staircase right was in the back of the building if it were a home the staircase okay and that was an absolute thing back then staircase was always in the front gotchas a staircase in the front well it was nice when there were some in the back which it was a storefront and the family lived gotcha and it was originally built in this location yeah it's been gotcha shifting does it a bunch of times back when we did this expansion we moved it forward to make room for the elevator so that the entire building and II a complaint okay which these days you can't get around so no it is it's a I'm sorry go ahead so the new construction had to have higher ceilings gotcha of course and what year did this building open as a library ah we were given this building in 1921 twelve from Julia levering it was given in honor of her son Richmond levering who died young and there's a very interesting book called Hellfire boys okay where Richmond levering is mentioned for his work in ordinance development okay which they ran with here yeah no that's good I mean which is a good thing yeah at the end of the day so it was gifted - it was gifted for the purpose of being a library okay okay the library was created in 1917 1916 and then Julian and it was immediately moved into by the library so you're coming up on your hundred year anniversary last year okay well that's very cool right that's it so we're just going to walk around check out the rest of the building and get out of your hair okay okay well I'm not gonna interrupt anybody if anybody asked me what I'm doing I'd be happy to I'm not gonna stop I'm not gonna walk up to somebody and say hey you I'm about - okay I'm not going to engage anybody because that that will turn into me causing a disruption so I'd rather remain silent just walk around and yeah you can do that sure absolutely I know you weren't talking to me all right so this is I've been up here before this is the area where you can use the computers up here to get on the internet and do that kind of stuff you sign in with your library card there's another librarians desk up here and again they do have a very good selection of reading material as you would expect a library to have a little telescope here that's kind of cool place to sit down and read does anybody use the telescope no no just for display gotcha or the or big window right you have to aim out the skylight gotcha and I'm sorry you know I didn't ask are you the director of the library or good it's always good to talk with the head yeah and we really do appreciate all the information and you taking the time to explain all the history to us because that's that's what it's all about it's good stuff it's a nice seating area some sunny windows looks like a nice comfortable place to read this new construction okay gotcha gotcha it is a lot of space yeah right right no it's beautiful in the way they did the addition it really blends in nicely it's nice and the elevators working rui use the stairs because i want my watch to be happy with me you did for how long that's a long 10 minutes yeah did you have a book with you all these books and nothing to read right this is kind of cool and I'm sorry to get your name Cynthia young my name is Jason Cynthia pleasure to meet you this is my son Ben now ready you have a wonderful day thank you is this the way to thanks again so here oh my gosh she's not gonna follow us out so that's good well that was nice that was could have potentially gone wrong and actually turned out to be nice there's actually a downstairs lower level like a basement let's go down here and take a look at that so it's a biography to the left community room to the right so wow there's like a whole nother set of bookshelves down here actually now that I think about it I remember being in this basement once when they had a middle of a winter they had somebody from one of the local local Zoo up the island bring some creatures out for the kids to play with or check out when my son was small so we were down here for that so this is the room where the petting zoo little situation was I was talking about how we doing guys oh no that's right we're out of here in a minute no trouble at all hope I'm not disturbing you good it's a good time to be done no it's actually if it wasn't so cold out it's nice out that sunshine and it's beautiful just checking out the old artwork and the photographs here it's some pretty cool stuff you guys work for the library you just know we're what volunteers working for AARP preparing taxes that it's a joint program between the library and AARP I got you well that's good work so yeah help some people get their taxes done we're doing not the library but first personal yeah no that's great some AARP I guess some of the seniors that yeah but but again because the way this thing is funded its we our target our target is the seniors right but I I can't discriminate at you because you're not a senior well your taxes believe it or not I'm only a few months away from being old enough for AARP so I should be getting that card in the mail any time what is it is it 50 so yeah I'll be 50 in December so I'll keep my eye out for the card guys that's it yeah it's my why my family keeps telling me I don't know well you gentlemen have a good day I appreciate your lovely attitudes and being cordial and thank you very much have a good day take care all right so this is the looks like the last room we haven't seen here well I guess if you want a book in this aisle you got to have your tennis shoes on I guess they use this as storage down here to always forget this areas here is the local newspaper archives Easthampton star that's pretty cool I thought you had to go to the stars offices for that good to know Oh glory obviously not waving in the breeze but uh standing proud nonetheless alright and here's the public restaurant we don't even realize it was the downstairs alrighty well now we're really leaving are you coming to check up on us you are what are you afraid we're gonna do got you well now you know this is it just take some video it might be I mean I don't know yeah it might be on YouTube might be on I don't know depends what we decided to do with it a lot we do videos some of them we use some of them we don't you never know until we go back and edit okay I don't see this film footage used anywhere why is that it's done nothing but make your library look spectacular and I'm kind of in the back of my mind hoping you don't ruin that because you did such a wonderful job and you've been wonderful not surprised whose privacy well no actually you did and if you're familiar with the law when you walked up to my camera and knowingly being video recorded that's called first-person consent sure you did if we go back and look at the video you but I don't want to get into semantics of minutia with you if we have no ill will no ill intent sure you know where I am right well you were gonna give me your business card and I was gonna send you a copy of the video remember yeah that was the agreement we made oh I'm as old as you are well you'd be surprised sure absolutely you know I actually started thinking maybe I should carry a baseball and like a baseball cap with me when I do these things because when you're at a baseball game and the camera comes on you everybody jumps up and says hey me over here everybody wants to be and that's going broadcasting on national television and nobody has an issue with it but god forbid some nobody guys walking around with a video camera the whole world freaks out I just wish that there was something I could have told you to not have you worry about what we're doing because I felt like I answered your questions and I felt like I told you where we go when I'm with my 15 year old son it's broad daylight well like I said I mean somebody could come in here weather these days with the technology that exists somebody could come in here with a camera you'd never know they have what do you do about that guy I walked in holding this monster in my hand of course you do and you didn't get my permission just like I don't need your permission to get you on camera here and you actually gave it to me anyway look up first person consent when it comes to public video no no I'm not arguing with you do I sound like I'm arguing I'm sorry thank you I sound like I'm arguing no okay this is the sound of me arguing my wife would be happy if this was the sound of me arguing we've only been together for 35 years though so we'll we'll keep working on it we will 49 years never been in trouble in my life I haven't had a traffic ticket in 26 years so no reason to start looking for trouble now and you know what I just want to leave you guys with one thought seriously okay in this country are to being eroded daily I don't want to get into a whole discussion with you but I think you know what I'm talking about and many many years ago and I used this line all the time but many many years ago I went to a dinner so Thinnes office when I was a child and he had a sign hanging up on the wall that said ignore your teeth and they'll go away if you ignore your rights they too will go away so we'll all we're doing is exercising our right to public publicly take video and record that's all it is man oh he knows we had a wonderful conversation downstairs yeah we had a very cordial polite conversation I believe right no one I actually asked you if I was interrupting you afraid hope I wasn't disturbing you anything all right well you ladies have a wonderful day I thank you very much I think so I am going to send you a copy of the video okay on one condition let me know the results of your fact-finding mission with your attorney when after I send you the video you can reply and just let me know what he said that's a deal we have a deal and again thank you very much I really do appreciate you being cordial and again I hope like I said there's no way oh well no ill intent you made this place look stellar you have nothing to be ashamed of worried about concerned with no not at all alrighty well go inside and stay warm and have a good day thank you alright guys so that was the Amagansett free library maybe they should change the name to the Amagansett freedom library I don't know I'm gonna let you guys decide how that one went we were not prevented from taking video police were not called but there was as you saw some resistance and she's going to contact her attorney and find out that we're completely within our rights to do what we were doing or else I'm sure she would have asked us to leave which he did not so this is a mixed bag and again I want you know hopefully you guys will respond in the comments and let me know what you think does the I'm against it free library get a pass does it get a fail or is it a pass/fail you guys decide let us know please don't forget to Like comment subscribe I'm against a kress coming to
