‘Heartbroken and Traumatized': Nancy Pelosi Speaks Out After Attack on Husband

starts now thanks for joining us I'm giovang and I'm Terry McSweeney heartbroken and traumatized that's how house Speaker Nancy Pelosi is describing what her family is feeling after a violent Hammer attack on her husband Paul in the last 15 minutes the speaker released her first statement about the bizarre incident inside their Pacific Heights Home it reads in part quote yesterday morning a violent man broke into our family home demanded to confront me and brutally attacked my husband Paul our children are grandchild children and I are heartbroken and traumatized by the life-threatening attack on our pop we are grateful for the quick response of law enforcement and emergency services and for the life-saving medical care he is receiving please know that the outpouring of prayers and warm wishes from so many in the Congress is a comfort to our family and is helping Paul make progress with his recovery well speaker Pelosi says her husband's condition continues to improve the investigation into the attack still in the very early stages NBC bay area's Christy Smith has the latest from San Francisco General right now the motive and what his full intent is or was is still under investigation a day after the violent attack on house Speaker Nancy Pelosi's husband Paul Pelosi the investigation remains in the early stages today San Francisco D.A Brooke Jenkins told us her office plans to file charges against the suspect 42-year-old David depop in the coming days we expect to be filing on Monday attempted murder charges as well as residential burglary and assault with a deadly weapon and elder abuse that is based on the fact that the suspect took a hammer and obviously assaulted Mr Pelosi the sheriff's department says depop remains in custody at SF General it's been quite an emotional last day or so to absorb all of this to know that somebody who was not only a local leader but a national leader to have their house targeted to have such a violent attack on her husband it of course makes anyone who is in political leadership take a step back and to question not only your own safety and the safety of your family the D.A attended an event today along with other city leaders including mayor London breed and police chief Bill Scott we don't know where this investigation is going to end but we're going to continue to dig turn over every piece of evidence that we can and you know the our primary focus from the police standpoint is to do our job so the prosecutors can do theirs and this this this man needs to be held accountable for what he did Speaker Pelosi was in Washington when the attack happened early yesterday morning sources say Paul Pelosi managed to call 9-1-1 when the suspect wasn't paying attention a spokesperson for the speaker said yesterday that Paul Pelosi had successful surgery to repair a skull fracture in serious injuries to his right arm and hands the Pelosi family is a beloved family in the city and so you know our hearts and prayers go out to them and so it's just I know I'm sure very difficult and hard time for them but we are so grateful that popolosi seems to be doing well mayor Brie today speaking on camera about the attack for the first time Nancy Pelosi is you know on a whole other level as it relates to elected leaders a very courageous elected leader in this country and and known figure throughout the world and so it's just really important that we start looking at this differently so that something like this doesn't happen especially as easily as it is Christy Smith NBC Bay Area News political leaders continue to respond to the attack today former president Barack Obama connected to the incident to a divisive political rhetoric when when we don't just disagree with people but we start demonizing them making wild crazy allegations about them that creates a ID climate and if elected officials don't do more to explicitly reject that kind of rhetoric if they tacitly support it or encourage their supporters to stand up side voting places armed with guns and dressed in tactical gear more people can get hurt Mr Obama made the comments that a campaign rally in Detroit afterward a Heckler interrupted his speech and was escorted out Obama says a Heckler emphasized his point about the need for civility we're continuing to keep a close eye on this investigation and Paul Pelosi's condition our team is tweeting out updates make sure to follow us our handle at NBC bay area
