£5000 Car Flip Challenge

yeah it's going all like this dripping it's a generally a good cat hello and welcome to car throttle my name is alex i'm jack i'm ethan and in the second of our three-part series brought to you by our friends at autotrader we're going to be buying a car fixing it up and selling it for a profit now you may remember in the last episode rory from autotrader joined us on the sofa after setting us the challenge of buying a car with no more than 5000 pounds that we'd later use as a trade up the ladder step to greatness the car we bought was a volkswagen up that had its problems so to see exactly what rory thought of it head over to the autotrader channel after this for his full review to talk us through the numbers and how much we sold it for and how much we've got to spend so we bought the up for two and a half yeah we bought the door for a hundred pounds yeah we got the cam belt and service done by adam at volks tech technics that was 400 pounds yeah uh the decals were 15 yeah and the hubcaps were 25. yeah so our total spend on the car was 3040 pounds and since then you've sold it i have four three thousand six hundred and fifty pounds to a lovely man in kent that's pretty good that's not bad pretty good going so we made a profit of 610 pounds so we now put that back into our original five grand pot so we've got 5 610 pounds for this video we're millionaires now right yeah yeah what cars are we going to be looking at 350z thai park hold on where do these come from 350z great shout out z4 you were going to say coupe right i was but you interrupted me i'm really excited this is a car we're buying to sell so i won't be looking at anything because those will keep from i like the idea of golf but like you said they're too crashing they are quite crazy very good at going sideways they are yes what do you say that we load up the auto trader website and have a look let's go from four to six yeah i've got z3 here three liter that is rare i could do a clutch on that oh god we don't want that i've got a 350z here all gone it's basically the only one in our price range oh how much five eight got mot till december front lip rotary gtr wheels mishimoto oil cooler eye back anti-roll bars hsd mono products too much we need a blank canvas for someone yeah i found a z4 here no three three liter it's convertible it's five grand though if you can find a coupe a manual for around that kind of price five five and a half i think we'll be very very tempted oh there's a bmw 3 series 325 ti compact full service history one owner from new 177 thousand miles on the clock six grand what that's gotta be a typo multiplayer's a good shout out actually there's money to be made there big time big time with the z4 what engine am i looking for three liter what you've been looking at not two point twos rare find reluctant sale is it a coupe yeah it looks to be five seven fifty that is that's only 140 pounds more than our oh our budget heated leather seats some parking scuffs on alloy wheels scratch on boot lip minor cosmetic chips the front spoiler i think five anything for a z4 coupe is a very good price really yeah well this is 140 miles away but it's an impretzel 2002 wrx they just don't interest me in the slices yeah i'm just not really into japanese cars you're really not cool enough that's why i put a porsche derived v6 in my mx-5 please even your japanese car is a uk bottle [Laughter] oh i'm going to play it on that fat that's not bad with 77 000 miles on it bit crashing down there they are a bit sideways either jack yo i've got a mark one audi s3 okay talk to me mileage 152 000 price uh is it is it three no it's not it's five two fifty what's good for a civic type off well so which one is the ep3 i can't bloody tell with these things it's one for three nine fifty here really twelve minutes twelve months mit how some mileage on it a million 118. that's actually not bad abs light is on take the bulb out i put the type over it take the bob's out too much effort oh i'm suggesting very little it's quite standard actually what about yeah yeah here we go 6.8 liter yeah i'm in rolls-royce silver spirit look how cool we'd be in there that's like our bentley eight that we've yeah better right jack yes an audi s3 mark one 129 000 miles that's a bit better 4190 oh mazda mx5 mark 2 1.8 28 750 miles i don't even want to guess nice some nut cases got that for loads of money how much five and a half we found our car what is it three thousand eight hundred pounds we can't buy an mx5 yeah no we can't we can't twenty nine and a half thousand i know yeah but it's so much money for an mx-5 what about that okay i'll shut up how about aldi yeah s4 a van get out of here let's have a look oh hello i'd have that lovely 5 850 not even not moon miles either 138 i think i'd be alright of that should we go through our list yeah your z4 which i really like the look of s3 that i found the mx5 that i found off camera as well i also found a fiat coupe a 20 valve turbo four and a half grand really yeah i mean it's it's an interesting color it's a great color don't like the black wheels if we were to spray those up silver i think it would look a lot more classy there's also your s4 jack there is my s4 so what excites us most out of these i quite i'd quite like the s4 i do also like the fiat and we can't do another mx-5 okay i think that the most amount of money to be made is on the z4 3 liter coupe why don't we get started with that do you want to ring us actually i think this isn't so much a challenge for me this is actually we need to get a good price for this it's a team effort oh it's above average mileage as well i'm sorry but the person do we think that the s3 is a good price for 190. there aren't loads of them on the market at the minute do you know what we should do what's that we should find rory yes sir you join a car throttle shoot please do not say we've got a budget of 5 600 pounds so far we've got a bmw z4 3 liter coupe a for five seven mark one audi s3 that's for four one ninety fiat coupe 20 valve turbo for four and a half final one audi s4 event 4.2 cuatro for 5 850. oh you know i love a fiat coupe 20 valve turbo that was a proper i love that said four three liter they're kind of coming back into fashion now i think as well that could be a strong shout i'd go say for me i think i'm leaning towards that f4 as well thank you for your advice rory um we're going to leave you to do what people do in their tank tops give us one more flex awesome nice one man right i'll uh catch you real soon cheers dude he's kind of confirmed what we already yeah but for now um i think we've pretty much reached a bit of a dead end here are some solid choices today though boys i've got good feeling about the z4 yeah so from us i think um we've done well searching join us next time so the guy with the z4 has got back to us well he got back to ethan and ethan's already had a little word with him and he said yeah we've still got it and come and have a look it which is really good news thing is so it's got a couple of scratches which we knew about i asked him about them and he was honest about them the one thing i sort of didn't pay much attention to was the service history so we've got part service history we can use that as some some leverage maybe boy if he's a nice guy then we can do him over now alex has the audacity to take holiday today unbelievable but luckily we have ethan with us and he's an expert yeah we're gonna head down there to bournemouth see if we can get a little bit of money off and then drive away of our next purchase our next step in the ladder to greatness as alex would say it's gonna be glorious it's gonna be glorious oh some of the keynote viewers may have noticed that we're in the saab oh the lone survivor of the 500 ultimate daily challenge welcome to the other cars ethan they were gone the day after this old girl going strong was it eight months later yeah the other one it's a machine man the road there is where is it oh there it is uh straight off the bat there's a couple things that might be able to get pulled out headlights they look a bit gunky to be honest this whole front bumper looks a bit it looks a little bit scabby should i go get the key yeah we'll probably go around it yeah yeah okay all right bear with me all right i have it spoken to him a very lovely man called mark who is the owner current owner of this car maybe former owner in about half hour he did say there was an issue with the key and uh this one is a replacement and you can see that cause it's got a little no key diy sticker i'm not a fan of that that's not authentic that's not authentic that's not on oh that's good where should we look first look inside let me get that door for you ethan that's very rude of me thank you jack that's so rude this suits you does it suit me yeah well it's cause it's a cool car you know you know go hand in hand with a cool car let's shift that back if we don't buy this now i've just messed with ladies i think it's a memory seat though helps you remember so that's how you steer that's how you steer yet it seems oh oh that's that is on in it i think it looks all right it looks like it's actually being looked after it looks like it's probably been cleaned recently that is all service history isn't it and stuff ah with the service history so i did have a quick chat with mark and he said that although he has kept to all the regular bmw servicing intervals he hasn't taken the stamp in but he has invoices for the work that was done ah so that's the one i spoke to him about on the phone where he said someone keyed it that battery looks new uh nothing looks shunted in some sort of massive rear end oh should we do the number plate check this is from written off vehicle repair no it's not uh car panels fingers crossed car panels actually we could probably get a new number yeah i was just thinking about that 4d gel yeah i think people like them don't they right there i mean there's a lot of room for activities it looks like i said this cleaned recently that's all greasy seems happy enough yeah oh a little bit fruity in it out of the back the wheels i think they're a bit monkey on there you might have to do something with that yeah they're a little bit minging ethan did it have an oil leak on the advisory it's got an oil leak that's dripping is that good i think we could probably tidy it up and we'll probably make some money but let's take it for test drive and just see see what's what that's how it goes all right you don't take it out then okay let's go it rolls does it stop [Music] does it very good feels right it feels pretty solid good road to test the suspension on i don't hear any knocks don't hear any bangs yeah i mean it goes all right that's so good right so it's got some cosmetic issues it's got a slight oil leak but we knew that because that was on the mot wasn't it should i offer him five you can offer him five here you wanna do do you wanna do the deal no should i do the i can't do it you decide i think you should do the deal with them what's it just say we like it no just tell him it's nice tell him the things you like about it and then just ask him very nicely if he's willing to knock almost 800 pound off his asking price he seems like a reasonable guy i think he'll be all right all right what have you got in your hand we've got a car we've got a car how much do we have a car for we've got this car for five for five you did it oh great that's good yeah yeah that's really good that's not bad right guy you must have really liked sweet talked him look at you found the car bought the car bought the car this is all on you if it goes horribly wrong it's your fault no you you you were the inspector you're back i am back yeah from holiday how was it it was good but i'm now more tired than when i left i don't sound like a holiday no not really but you've come back to a car i have yeah you've been busy yeah we have look well done initial thoughts i think it's all right new plates get the wheels done there's a few dings and dents yeah there's a bit of an oil leak on it as well okay i think that was part of the reason why we got it for the price that we did i think for five grand this is an incredible deal good power good economy great looks a really good daily driver today we are at bds motorsports and our friend bruno is going to check car over check out the oil leak and then um we can have a mechanically very sound car and then it's up to us to do the rest of the prettifying [Music] okay so bruno here is our five thousand pound z4 coupe first impressions i'm very impressed how little you paid for it it has its issues but overall goodbye so usually these engines are very common to leak from the rocker cover oil filter housing that part that bolts onto the head and the oil cooler itself then also vanos seals so the rubber seals they just go with time they get rock hard and then they are just plastic they don't seal anymore i think this one very obvious to see where the leak is because this is open the bonnet the side of it is coated in oil the rocker cover usually would smoke when you start it up but it generally looks very clean from the rocker cover gasket all right well let's um let's start chasing some oil leaks then shall we yeah let's crack on foreign [Music] right so bruno is busy so we thought we would have a race one two three yes i've ruined you oh no what the has happened and that's how you have a productive day we got the old filter housing off we're going now to replace the gasket series gun so we showed this one earlier and now this is the inner one which is really in bad condition so i'm going to try to take it off after this job a job like this we usually recommend to change oil and filter so when we clean all the engine when everything is off we clean it to very cleaner and you don't really want to have brake cleaner contamination on the on the oil it's not ideal so after this job being done oil and filter and then it's good to go so this is some silicon spray we put on the seals so when they go back in they don't get caught torn so avoid them licking this helps the thing slide in as as we all know no one likes to put it in dry so while bruno's got the z4 in the air to do the oil change we were just discussing the wheels that were on the z4 currently they're silver they're completely stabbed up they look really rubbish we said do you know anywhere that does wheel refurbs or anything like that and then bruno said how about a newer better looking black set of the same wheel which are on his back wall here they are they've been sitting for about two years and bruno only wants 150 quid so we've bought them and all i'm going to do now is to spray them up just get rid of a bit of grime and then take them to a wheel shop get the tyres put on and then jobs are good and i reckon it'll really refresh the look of our z4 and add at least 10 pounds to the value of the car no maybe like 500 quid anyway let's crack on with that [Music] now we've got it up in the air what do you think of it my german opinion on it is it's better from underneath and from the top oh really yeah quite impressed how clean it is underneath as you can see there is no rust everything seems to be good it's a genuine car underneath bushings seem to be all fine everything is in one piece the diff is dry which is very uncommon it's generally a good car [Music] oh race car that's 50 more horsepower oh it actually looks really smart you're all welcome thank you bruno for doing all of this free of charge and if you want your car fixing at bds motorsports challenge then bruno will also do it free of charge yeah always with the z4's oil leaks now sorted and the new black wheels transforming the look of the car bruno suggested we put the z4 on his dino for an engine health check what's the number burrito uh so we got 253 and torque is at 222. he's an engine with 107 000 miles we cannot expect it to make the the pirate head from factory it's overall as i said for the mileage i think it's decent you know it's very very healthy and and remember we bought this for five thousand pounds i know which is very cheap it's a real steal for what it is yeah i'm very awesome thank you very much bruno no problem right so we've had a good day at bds motorsport bruno you've given the car a once over 253 horsepower consistently so so we know that the engine is happy all that's left to do now is to clean up a few odds and sods and then get it listed on autotrader and hope that we're going to make big bucks i think you choose fetch seven seven and a half grand from what i've seen underneath it's a clean car the mileage is the only thing that doesn't really help so seven grand all right well um yeah we'll see how lucky we can get with this car but for now bruno thank you very much for working your magic um and you're welcome we will see you next time right so it's a couple days later now we have a very limited budget to try and tidy up the rest of the car now we could have gone and bought a new bumper if we had a little bit more money but these silver growl i believe the color of it is they're really hard to find and they're expensive when you do see them so we've gone out and we've bought things like new number plates new badges we've got a headlight restoration kit just things like that just so we can tidy up a little bit with the limited amount of money that we had left [Music] with a car cleaned headlights polished new badges and number plates on we used the last of our budget to do some paint touch-ups on the wheels and also fill and touch up the nasty gash on the front bumper obviously these aren't permanent fixes but temporary measures to smarten up the car which will make clearing the advert when we come to sell all that was left to do now was to take some nice pictures and our z4 is ready to be listed okay so jack this is the exciting one now the car is looking a lot better the photos are looking a1 so now we need to figure out how much are we going to put the car up for so what i'm going to do is i'm on the auto trader website and i'm just going to search bmw z4 between 5 000 and 8 and a half thousand pounds that's kind of our realms body type coupe five five five coupes for sale so the lowest here six four nine five we're already up money the next car is automatic with a hundred and eighty one thousand miles six and a half thousand pounds so a comparable car i think would be this one 122 000 miles it is an automatic though up for seven nine nine five and auto trader says great price wow yeah i mean it looks it looks pretty clean and tidy it's a good car but it's an auto exactly so is someone probably willing to trade a couple of more blemishes for a manual see what i mean exactly yeah so we're kind of at the seven nine but i think we're gonna go a bit lower and then wow bmw z4 3 liter si only one owner from new 30 000 miles this guy has got it up for 19.995 they better come with infinite warranty i reckon we try a lot seven 450 for a fairly quick sale be honest about it and um i've actually got the description in there as well saying front bumper scratches on the rear i've said that the alloys could do with a refocus there was a couple of things that we did to the car to temporarily make it look better but we are going to say to people yeah look it needs these things addressing properly yeah future date yeah exactly yeah we're trying to con anyone are we we're just trying to smarten up a little bit exactly let's input it into autotrader and then see what we can do with the price perfect let's do
