welcome to powder coat music in this presentation we're going to do a deep dive analysis of the differences between the zoom R12 and the zoom R8 Zoom corporation started back in 1983 and specialized in creating products based on their own proprietary microchip designs as we know Zoom has since grown into a leading manufacturer of recording equipment effects pedals for guitars and audio for video products along with multi-effects processors with the release of the R12 Zoom currently has two different mobile Hardware 8-track multi-track recorders on the market simultaneously that are competing with one another in this presentation we'll first look at the features of both the zoom R12 and the zoom R8 and then we will exploit and analyze the differences between the two mobile units so that you can see which one may work best for your individual needs anyone interested in purchasing one of these two units should be aware of what they can and can't do to avoid buying the unit that may not work best for them now with this I decided to take a closer look at exactly what those differences are and share the results I strongly suggest that you know your requirements otherwise you could easily waste money buying gear you want or what others say is cool as opposed to buying what you actually need many of us have been down that road so know your requirements first now this is going to be the key in meeting your objectives when purchasing or upgrading to a unit that best fits your production workflow that is your specific production workflow so with this sit back relax grab your coffee and tea and stay with me because we have a lot of good information to cover you're not going to want to miss it now especially the information later in this presentation before we look at the features of both the zoom R12 and the R8 you may want to ask yourself the following questions first number one do I work best with a unit that has buttons and knobs only on its user interface number two do I work best with a touch screen that's like a phone or a tablet to manage my workflow number three do I need a mobile Hardware digital recorder with automatic punch in and out and number four will I need a mobile unit with a larger amount of SD card space for live performances if you're shopping for a new mobile Hardware multi-track digital recording unit or just looking to make a change then your answers to these questions will help determine which unit may work best for you on zoom's website currently both the R12 and the R8 retail for 299 dollars with this it comes down to what you need and how you work best let's start with the zoom r12s features R12 is a multi-track digital recorder with a maximum of eight tracks of recording the unit includes a 2.4 inch full color touchscreen for unit operation now the graphical interface the touchscreen has on-board track editing that includes cut copy and loop functionality the unit is also battery powered for up to five hours using four double a batteries or if you're at home you can just use the AC adapter and plug it in the unit also has two combo Jack inputs with phantom power and high Z on input one R12 also includes a send effects Channel with four options you got Reverb delay in course now here's the really cool thing with this unit is with the guitar lab software application presets users can choose up to three effects from zoom's guitar effects collection that includes distortions modulation effects spatial effects and more so you can update and have a wide variety of effects and you're not just limited to the ones on the R12 this makes this unit very powerful in this area R12 also has a built-in compressor that's included for inputs one and two and the unit has pan and three band EQ for each track which is very cool for a small unit like this there is a sequence play feature that can be used to create playlists um that could be used for things like backing tracks in live settings R12 has also 150 drum Loops that's pre-loaded into the unit and it records to sdx cards R12 also has a built-in USBC audio interface with control surface functionality so you have the option of using the unit with a digital audio workstation if you want to let's move on to an overview of the zoom R8 features this is an a-track unit with built-in stereo condenser microphones it records directly to SD cards up to 32 gigabytes it also records 16-bit to 24 bit depth and 441k HZ and 48 khc mono and stereo wave files you got dual mic line instrument level inputs on the XLR TRS combo connectors there's two of them and also it has phantom power there are dual balance quarter inch TRS output Jacks as well and a headphone output Jack with a dedicated volume control now there are over 140 send return and insert DSP effects you also have like amp and preamp models and mastering algorithms you have internal track bouncing and mix down of multi-track stereo tracks and moving on you have an eight voice pad sampler with adjustable sensibility this is how you're going to trigger the onboard Rhythm and sampler the sounds with these pads you have a Rhythm machine or drum machine with 160 drum patterns and percussions and you can manual play or step entry any of the Rhythm patterns with the quantization feature it's also uh includes a loop based audio sequencer that integrates the recorder Rhythm machine and Pad sampler and you got 2N 2 out USB audio interface for PC Mac computers PC and Mac computers I should say you got a high definition 24-bit depth and 96 KC playback capability with all software and control surface functionality and that's a Mackie control emulation you got full mixing and transport controls for uh it's compatible with Cubase uh logic Albertson live and a few other dolls you can also run this unit on four double a batteries with alkaline battery life for up to five hours and finally let's analyze some of the major differences between the zoom R12 and the zoom R8 as you can see on your screen right now there are three columns here that the first is a technical specifications column then we have a r a column and a zoom R12 column what we're going to do is we're going to go down the technical specifications column and for each line item we're going to take a look at the differences between the two units now if you see a red asterisk next to a row in the technical specifications column that means there's a difference or a significant difference between the R8 and the R12 so let's start with the technical specifications column with the first row which is the track count as you can see with the R8 and the R12 the track count is the same as well as the simultaneous recording tracks when you move down to the third column which is simultaneous Play Tracks you'll notice that the R8 uh you can play back eight audio and one metronome track now you may be able to do that with the R12 but I couldn't find anything in the documentation to say that you could so I made that as a difference between the two moving down to the sample rate format as you can see with the R8 you can record in 48 khc you can't do that with the R12 moving down to the number of projects again those are the same for the R8 and the R12 both next is file editing um the R8 you can see copy file divide and the rest and moving on to R12 you can see R12 is kind of different because it looks at um projects and how you edit them the file files in them as region so move copy paste split delete so that's different in how uh that unit manages its file editing as opposed to how the R8 does its file editing moving on to the effects as you can see under the R8 those are the effect specifications and the zoom r12s are quite different take a second take a look at that um when it comes next to the next line item of adding effects now on the zoom R8 you can't do that but on the zoom R12 you can add and manage effects and delete effects with the addition of the guitar lab software application so that is a huge difference between the units moving on to tuner and metronome they both have it and with the EQ on the next line item both have three band eqs but the R12 EQ specifications are superior and those were basically listed out so I wanted to make sure you had it the next line item is compression and they both have it moving down to the next line item which is phantom power again both of the units have it let's move on to the next line item which is going to be the number of mic preamps they both have the same number of mic preamps however the r12s preamps are superior especially when you look at the specs it's significant so that's something to keep in mind moving down to the display uh the R8 has a 128 by 64 pixel LCD display and the R12 has a full color touch screen LCD so that is a big difference in how the unit's UI functions so if you like a touch screen and being able to work like your you know work on a touchscreen tablet or your phone then the R12 is going to be for you otherwise if you're a more Hands-On person you got to have the knobs and the faders and more buttons then the R8 is going to be the device that you're probably going to want more moving down to the next line item is the pads the R8 has eight velocity sensitive pads R12 does not have pads now when it comes to punching in and punching out like automatically with a foot switch things like that the R8 is going to be the unit for you if that is something you have to have the R12 does not have that it's old school you can punch in and out but it's old school punching in and out moving down to the next line on them which is audio interface as you can see there are differences here with the R8 and the R12 the R8 sampling frequency it includes 48 and the R12 does not list that so you might have a it looks like you have a a advantage in some areas with the R8 over the R12 in that area next is computer connectivity uh they both have USB computer connectivity the R8 is a mini type B the R12 isn't any type c next line item is MIDI R8 does not have it the R12 does have many moving down to the next line item is the drum kit as you can see the R8 we were able to get a little bit more information about the R8 drum kit and it looks to have more functionality than currently the R12 does moving on the next slide item we have our sampler now of course both have a sampler but the R8 appears to be a bit more Superior because it also has 48 khc recording capability where the R12 does not item is built-in mics the R8 has two built-in omnidirectional condenser microphones R12 does not have that they have no built-in microphones at all on that unit next line item is analog inputs and you can see the full specs for both there we're going to give props to the R12 in this category the R12 has Superior microphone inputs some of zoom's best and it's the same ones that are used on the R20 from my understanding of looking at the specs next line item is analog outputs again I give props to the R12 here as the outputs are superior in specifications to the R8 the next line item is storage media again the R12 has more space that you're going to be able to save to because they use the micro SDXC cards that go up to one terabyte your maximum storage space on the R8 is going to be 32 gigabytes the next line item is faders and the R8 has nine the R12 has 10. um the power specifications are a little bit different they both are battery operated or they can be battery operated I should say um and um they both are USB powered um however you're looking at a DC power supply on the R8 and an AC power supply on the R12 and then for the under the technical specifications column for the last three rows you have your height depth width and weight and as you can see the R12 is just a little smaller and weighs just a little lighter than the R8 in summary both are quality professional units that are capable of producing Superior audio again it's important that you know your requirements before you purchase or upgrade just because something may appear to be more advanced doesn't mean that it's the right fit for the way you need to record to be the most productive the bottom line here is that a hardware multi-track recorder that works great for one person may not be the best unit for another well that is a wrap if you
