You Can't Handle BOCCHI THE ROCK!

foreign [Music] foreign [Music] chowder was a show released on Cartoon Network in November of 2007 which was famous in no small park for its nearly unparalleled dedication to multimedia animation and visuals from claymation puppets to photos and toys the amount of places the artistic team was willing to go with chowder always elevated its Creative Energy to a level of innovation and artistic Mayhem that elevated the comedy in emotive aspects of the show to a whole new level unparalleled for its time it's very rare but sometimes hints of this show themselves in anime too whether it be the famous live-action bit at the End of Evangelion or the papercraft work and real-life pictures of later katicano episodes some of the best anime in their field transcend the lines of a 2d animation and into the real world whether it be kagia swapping the 4-3 aspect ratio to make a reference or fully coolly using its Ed to ride a POV shot with a real camera on a real Vespa these inter-crossing aspects of media often become iconic aspects of the anime and Series in general that they appear in one can easily think of seeing yesterday for me as Ed which mimics an old arcade game similarly mimicked by the one in chainsaw man's new EDS as well aside from katakano though these examples most of the time are one-off moments single gags or take place as opening or ending credits due to the extra effort and creativity they require nothing I've seen has really hit the artistic recurrence of something like chowder at least recently at least Bocce The Rock y the rock is a slightly less painful to watch show than watamote with a socially crippled protagonist whose near existence is an insurmountable anxiety hitori nicknamed Bocce is exactly what the pun in her name implies hitoribochi together meaning essentially all alone or loneliness in Japanese she has aims to be a beloved celebrity and have people adore her but only can imagine doing this from afar as she is way too anxious to engage with others directly so anxious in fact that even this distant approach doesn't work out for her as she wastes multiple years of her life wanting to create a band but making no progress due to her own lack of initiative but of course as most stories go we pick up at the point where her life will soon begin to change now let me be up front Bocce is cringe painfully so she gets better than say watamote like I compared to earlier but the fact I have to make that comparison is still not painting her exactly in a functional light bulgi takes the time to loudly talk to herself overconfidently then crumple cry and yell when things go wrong she's the type to take a picture with her friend group and then plaster the photo all over her walls and ceiling which you know coming from a place of earnestness that has its sort of pitiable charm but as far as the action itself it's past the line of any normal person if she weren't so earnestly fumbling a lot of the things she does would probably come across as sociopathic but that contributes to the comedy obviously she isn't just a pathetically laughable person you dislike due to her wall of infinite cringe the show does realistically manage to you ride that line in earnestness especially in how that interplays with the artistic choices of the show something I like about bolce the rock is its clear progression and character growth really setting out for goals and obtaining them seeing the most unfunctional person reach forward step after step into a competent and dependable person is obviously something people will naturally gravitate towards Gucci does have good traits after all though she is Dependable almost to a fault she is dedicated having spent six hours a day practicing guitar for years but is also not too judgy with others it's so satisfying then as she conquers these small hurdles that feel like horrendous mountains while all the better emphasizing her strengths but I can hear what you're saying what does all of this have to do with mixed media animation well I'm just building the context I'm painting the picture for you if you will primarily when we consider the purposes of multimedia animation they aim to create something unnatural otherworldly exaggerated and extreme a small case of this is comedy anime using extreme art style changes to deliver punch lines to jokes or horror movies using practical effects to creating more uncanny feeling to ideas the dissonance is being leaned into to illustrate a point with visuals that would otherwise be hard with the standard visual language that the show provides or sets itself in a feeling relayed to the viewer that inherently kicks them into a new level of immersion with a shock of the entire medium bending into other forms of art it jolts the attention back to a half attentive viewer and then uses that jolt and curiosity of a new visual effect to further emphasize and engage the viewer with the idea being portrayed radically Bocce uses this in a way to get a viewer into Bocce's head and highlight the distress that she is in with visceral changes in landscape and medium at one point showing her anxiety as a physical deconstruction of the layers of Animation deforming around her into a mess of lines and colors oscillating in random ways as if exploding or internally melting with other characters describing her in ways that visually match how we literally see her there this is a strength of the animation medium that is rarely utilized visuals from animation can take on any subtle or broad changes at any moment to highlight emotional beats logical through lines and motivations on intuitive levels that can't be obtained through any other mediums in episode 2 for example a dramatization of her situation about feeling that she'll bother others she shows her inner dialogue drawn in a classic courtroom drawing Style with chalk and charcoal leading to a sentence of death due to her perceived bothering of the people around her other times when she considers herself becoming obsessed with social media she internalizes her self-perceived disgusting and undeserved self-absorbed nature to her being a slug and a monster within a junji itol type pen based horror manga other times they do small things like when they draw bulchi rotoscope to intentionally emphasize an unnatural heavy breathing that she's going through using these sometimes uncanny look of rotoscoping human bodies onto anime proportions to give her a weight and uneasiness to her tiredness at one point Bocce's anxiety causes her to throw up and when it happens it cuts to a real video of dams in Japan Breaking Free with a we'll be right back style messages both visually representing what the Cutaway was doing while also making a gag about old TV regulation standards in one point two represent her spiraling despair they build a whole spinning stage with stop-motion animated models all moving around her rotating with with the stage spinning faster and faster quite literally showing a spiral of Despair that is far more intuitive with real objects spiraling than would ever be possible with regular 2D animation the visual Flair for this show is godsend and these are only a handful of examples a couple of these I'll admit are real standouts but a lot of these examples are just casual bits of Comedy littered through all of the episodes the artistic creativity has captured bulgi's nightmare and presented it to us the viewer I can't help but also root for Bochy the rock as a bit of an underdog tale too something that could be a career maker for many of the people involved or go down as a renowned classic anime when I heard the amazing and emotive performances of the voice actresses I immediately wanted to see what else lead cast They had done but they are mostly get this brand new actresses only doing voice acting minimally in the past or just starting in the last couple years or so hitori basically nothing one-off or bit characters in Sea tier shows no one ever talks about nijika other than playing the Beloved minor character keishirogane it's a fairly similar story almost nothing deal she literally has played one role at all before Bocce a single role Kita she was in 86 I guess and had a minor role in The Fruits Basket remake but otherwise also extremely Niche roles seriously it's like they somehow magically pulled these hyper-talented underutilized nobodies out of nowhere and turn them all so where they could shine then again maybe that's just because the show has a really great director except when I went to check the director being amazed at the quality of the direction I discovered that despite him doing some episode Direction key animation the typical stuff this actually is his directorial debut even for the assistant director this was their first time in a lead position like this but something I noticed both of the director and the assistant director's work is most of their work directing had been for shows with interesting openings like Wonder egg which pulls it right back doesn't it I talked about how a lot of the time these unique artistic things are done it's in openings and endings and it just so happens the only thing they seem to have worked on are openings and endings coming into this but instead of realigning their expectations and artistic standards it's almost like they kept the level of an OP quality through the entire run time so with all of this I almost wonder how bulchy the rock came to be truly a bar setting feat of creative artistic energy with professional craftsmanship of veterans coming from Mostly new or newish industry voices a show with such a strong bold and unique artistic Vision led by largely new or unproven staff absolutely killing it to the point where my timeline has become more filled with bulgy The Rock fan art then I'm seeing of Chainsaw man and MOB psycho some days truly rocketing to the top of fan reputation so what else can I say except for that I fully recommend the show and you should watch it it's one of the most inventive consistently creative and funny comedy shows to come out this year and maybe ever honestly it's on track to Dethrone kaguya this year for me at least in regards to its comedy it's consistently hilarious it might be the funniest anime I've
