[Music] organ music has played a central role in worship at yorkminster for centuries [Music] the origins of the current organ can be traced to the early 1830s in 1829 a fire was started deliberately and destroyed the previous instrument which had been in place since the 17th century the organ built to replace this was completed in 1832 and the case and some of the pipes of that instrument remain to this day in 1903 a new organ was built which formed the core of the organ we see and hear now this was the last complete refurbishment of the organ before work started on the once a century project in 2018 seeing this happen is an amazing experience an instrument which you know intimately is totally dismantled and removed piece by piece then gradually put back together in a process which takes over two years at the end of that you suddenly have the whole instrument back as good as new working better than ever before the organ is at the heart of daily life at the minster including appearing at major occasions through the minster's history in 1961 francis jackson then organist and master of the music played the takata from vidol's fifth symphony at the wedding of the duke and duchess of kent at the time the piece was not widely known but that performance set a trend for the takata to be one of the most popular pieces played at weddings and other major occasions the recent refurbishment of the minster's grand organ will help ensure this tradition of organ music stays at the heart of worship at york minster throughout the 21st century and beyond [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] you
