seat so they were can slowly slowly move into the morning service into the um continuance of our service from last night no worries I will not repeat my sermon but what I would like um just to mention in the beginning of the service before I will also read some of the technical announcements is really to say that this is the theme of this High holidays is reunion reunion with ourselves reunion with God that was my sermon last night or perhaps more reconciliation with God if we feel that God is absent in our lives and of course we will also um speak about the reunion with our community and I'm very pleased that so many of you found their ways especially with the badge traffic this morning in London into the sanctuary but I also want to acknowledge all those who are with us on YouTube we had last night very good attendance on in the virtual sanctuary of our congregation but also here and I hope that you all feel also this strength that comes through being together with your community and this reunion of being back together I um one first to mention to those who are on YouTube we have an online sedu available it is on the website of reformed judaism.org.uk and the link will be published in our live chat in a short moment so that you can follow there you just um the service online starts to my understanding on page two which is very easy and um I would ask to remind everyone here in the sanctuary that if you have a phone please make sure that it is on flight mode or even switched completely um off so that we can together respect the sanctity of this morning's service last announcement for those in the sanctuary and also um online our service compromises of several I would say elevated prayers and our tradition cause that people are standing during those prayers if you are able to I invite you please to do so but if you can't stand for a long time or if I'm standing is um not possible for you then please remain seated we will not judge you as this is all about being together and praying and not about all the performance what our bodies can do and can support us yes I have my wardens just pointed out and I have a wonderful note here um we have um made available a room in upstairs in the synagogue for those who need to eat something in between to break they're fast and I mentioned that before for medical reasons someone needs to drink something in between or eat something especially if you need medicine that were prescribed to you so please do so upstairs in the library and behind the library there is a room where you can sit in quietness and do that if you also need to have a short rest of the LA all the new library is also a quiet room where you can have a moment for your private meditations the children's service starts at 11 o'clock and the Crash is already opened and um everything else in between we have wonderful wardens if you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask them I would like to begin our morning service with the reading on page 767 767 which is a wonderful reflection written by Abram Isaac cook and speaks for my heart and hopefully it will lead us in this morning's service it says take away my shame lift my anxiety solve me of my sin and enable me to pray before thee with gladness of heart to pursue thy commands and thy Torah in the joy of holiness grant me to bring happiness to all thy children to exalt in a noble my thy faith full to spread goodness and mercy and blessing in the world humble The Arrogant who have tried to pervert me with falsehood while I sought my happiness in serving thee save me from weakness and from faltering and from every evil trait illumine my eyes with the light of thy Deliverance help thy people imbue the heart of thy people with reverence and with all before thy Majesty strengthen them with thy love guide them to walk in the path of thy righteousness Kindle in their hearts the light of the Holiness of this day of holiness and bring them to possess the inheritance though has set for them speedily speedily in our time soon amen and I invite um for our next reading Jeremy Eisen to read for us on page 792793 thank you at the foot of page 792 under the promising me uh subheading the day of the the day for atonement meaning you will find a passage by Vivian G Simmons so let's explore the meaning of of today Yom Kippur is one of the most universal of our holidays of our holy days this means that in essence not in form it concerns all men there is not a righteous man upon Earth who doeth good and sinneth not says Ecclesiastes that is to say the problems of sin and forgiveness are human problems all religions have to solve them in their own way the Jewish Day of atonement is unique in the manner of its observance and its appeal finds a response in every truly Jewish heart we are taught in our religious life to balance emotion with reason both have their place on Yom Kippur both the appeal and the response are far more to the heart and to the mind we Jews are as Moses called our forefathers let's confess it a stiff-necked people on the day of atonement our arrogance our self-will our sense of Independence our worldliness dropped from us like a garment in the solemn thought of the great poet Gabby roll each Israelite is pictured as standing before God on this day I am bare and destitute of good works and thy righteousness alone is my covering thus does the Jew face himself and his God on Yom Kippur with humility yet with confidence and with hope thank you please turn to page 346 347 for the beginning of the Yom Kippur morning service [Music] oh [Music] okay [Music] yes for on this day atonement shall be made for you to cleanse you for all from all your sins before the Lord you shall be cleansed on Rosh Hashanah we we considered how judgment is formed and on Yom Kippur we consider how judgment is sealed [Music] we have grown accustomed to sin and the fragments of the Torah lie shattered in our life charity has withered with calculation and the Sparks of Purity have burned out yet we still come on Yom Kippur and God who said I have forgiven Whispers it again to us and waits for our reply what shall it be what form shall it take let us repair what can still be repaired let us give back the gain we earned by Injustice let us make peace for our injured brother let us restore the person we wronged let us admit what is false in ourselves let us put right what is wrong in our family life let us know not saw the joy So This Joy of living may God give us the courage to do these things and help us to rebuild our lives and when we have finished our task may God permit us to enjoy the light zone for the righteous so that God can Delight in US answer a poor man who is not proud in his own esteem and continue with our Torah study this morning led by Jody today's study passage can be found at the bottom of page 750. all Jews are obliged in accordance with their means to give free loans whether they be man or woman rich or poor the Torah has not assigned any fixed amounts for loans and the Mitzvah is similar to sadaka in which all Israel are involved such loans are to be extended to all man or woman rich or poor adults or minors through their guardian and the like to prevent the money being lost the law to extend he said makes no distinction between friend and foe the Torah has made this explicit in the Mitzvah of restoring Lost Property Exodus 23 4 if you meet your enemies ox or his ass going astray you shall surely bring it back to him again the Torah does however make a distinction if the one against whom he Harbors an unjustified hatred and a friend both requested the same favor and he is unable to help both he is Duty bound to help the one he hates so as to overcome his prejudice thank you very much and we'll continue on the bottom of page 352. moment of silence the Children's Service is about to begin upstairs so if the children who are still with us the teenagers the youngsters want to go upstairs you are mostly invited to do that and I will already call our Rabbi Emeritus Rabbi Tony also to come forward as he will this morning after this short moment of meditation deliver his sermon thing I was very glad to accept no no is it on now yes I was very glad to accept Rabbi Adrian's generous invitation to me to give this Yom Kippur sermon now while in the past I've been used to having five high holy Day sermons to prepare and found myself anxiously thinking about them during my August holidays and very often not getting very much done either with my with anything else either this year with only one to prepare I expected the pressure would be off but it wasn't instead it's a different pre a different pressure over the years I thought hadn't I mined all my ideas about teshuva repentance hadn't I found texts of comfort in the Years winners now the year ahead looks bleak and when life was promising to be more comfortable all round texts warn us against complacency and self-indulgence so I thought won't I find myself repeating myself and I thought of the poor congregant the rabbi met in the street one day the rabbi recognized him but since the man never came to his Services he had trouble remembering his name he decided to take the bull by the horns and said hello there good to see you it's been a while I'd love to see more of you in shul -bye good good well you see the fact is I find the service is boring and repetitive always the same what do you mean said the rabbi understandably upset well the man said you know every time I come it's the same thing Yom Kippur Yom Kippur so struggling to think what to do I remembered what my teacher Rabbi Danny Smith once revealed to me when talking about writing High holy Day sermons which he promised we never really got any easy he mentioned a slim volume which he'd found an enduring source of inspiration it's called the way of man according to the teaching of hasidism I read it and I've returned to it almost every year it's a book of no more than 41 pages divided into six short chapters with preface of a page and a half it's given rise to hundreds of pages of service it's by Martin Boomer and I went back to it again this year now I'd first encountered Martin buber's writings when I was a student at Cambridge tutored by the emigry existentialist philosopher Paul rubajek sole survivor his of his family after the shower it was Bubba's seminal work in English his philosophy buba's philosophy appealed to me and to many young people in my generation inviting us to Value subjective experience and to appreciate the distinction between relationships with people which embrace them in their in a full encounter with their whole person I thou and relationships referred to as which are relationships with material things or else relationships with people to put it simply as if they were things or ideas but enough with the philosophy already more importantly in the end was my second encounter with Martin buber this time as an interpreter and indeed as a champion of hasidic's stories and what they have to teach us not only through that little book The Way of man but more generally in drawing wider attention to the hasid story and the teachings of their rabbis buba brought the spiritual insights of the Hasidic world into our own and very specifically into our Progressive Jewish world in fact I will sort of put the accent on Progressive our Progressive Jewish World in fact we find these stories and teachings throughout our prayer book anthologies and in our readings today we've already read some so buba's been an important bridge between the modern secular world and that Hasidic tradition he himself was born into an orthodox family in Austria he was a descendant indeed the maharam of Padua he was also a relative of the marxes call boxes his parents divorced when he was only three and he was brought up by his Hasidic grandfather Solomon buba in Poland but then he went on also to be a graduate of the University of Vienna where he studied Hegel and Canton Western philosophy and through his work on hacidism many of us who live in the so-called secular world as Progressive Jews have been able to make an enriching connection or reconnection with our tradition now while we may be able to appreciate the importance of being I thou and not I it in relation with each other what comes harder to us is the relationship with God what kind of a relationship might that be I thou I it or I question mark and on Yom Kippur that relationship is ever and again referred to as if we should know what it is seek him while he may be found the gates of repentance stand open and we are called to enter in having put right our relations with our fellow men and women it remains for us to put right our relationship with God and that's where the difficulty arises for so many of us I suspect here today we are taught that fullness of life is found in our closeness to God in fulfilling his Commandments and while we may indeed truly respect that teaching how hard it is for us many of us to conceive what it really means where do we find in ourselves that yearning for God that is mentioned in so many of our Traditions teachings after all most commonly don't we find ourselves in a state of agnostic piety agnostic piety or from height is when we want to keep the Commandments especially those concerned with personal and social justice and loving kindness and the warm Community sense found in our festivals and our Friday nights but as for God we often could only say I don't know I'd like to believe but actually in reality God's not in the Forefront of my mind or even at the heart of my feelings and we might even feel that probably it doesn't matter so much so long as we live good decent lives and look after each other and that is a long-standing Jewish tradition it's a kind of anti-theology though to be able to live like this to become an ordinarily righteous person we may perhaps need some kind of spiritual strength from somewhere to help us and while some people do seem to be innately blessed with that ability many of us need to look for that blessing from somewhere and so are we to think that our ancestors those generations of observant Jews hazards and Scholars had some kind of experience some sense of a need for a closeness to God that is missing in US are we to believe that they did not experience the doubts and uncertainties that we feel was that thing we call belief a simpler matter in their world well we might be lulled into thinking it was much simpler for them because they often frame their thoughts in stories that sound simple even naive to us like children's folk tales indeed they frequently refashion traditional folk tales for their own purposes simple on the surface complex underneath and I want to look at one such as a Hasidic tail and you will find it in the maxor but here it is a father and his son traveling together came to the edge of a forest some bushes thick with berries caught the child's eye father he asked may we stop for a while so I can pick some berries the father was anxious to complete their Journey but didn't have the heart to refuse the boy stopped the wagon for his son to get down to pick some fruit after a Time the father wanted to move on but the boy was so engrossed in picking the berries couldn't bring himself to leave son said the father we can't stay here all day we must go on but the father's pleas were not enough to lure the boy away the father loved his son no less for his childish unconcerned he couldn't leave him behind but he must Press On at last he said look you can pick your berries for a while longer and I shall start off slowly down the road and as you pick call out father father every few minutes and I shall answer you so long as you can hear my voice you will know I'm nearby but as soon as you can no longer hear me answering you no you are lost then run with all your strength to find me well because it's in our prayer book and we're told it's a Hasidic story we understand it must be more than a tale about a boy and his father and some berries calling out father father and waiting for a reply has Echoes of Abraham the Abraham and Isaac story it has an echo even of avinu malkanu our father our King and we get the idea this is teaching about us as the child and God as the parent our protector our guide and so on but there's no mention of God or man human being nothing General like that in this story it's about a relationship between a father and a child it describes a child preoccupied with what attracts him in the world responding to his wishes and his appetites and in the process not staying close to his father and failing to continue to share his journey to continue his path which is of course halacha in Hebrew now I trust this simple Tale can speak to us hinting at something about our losing touch with what is important to us something which may guide us on in life but it does so without talking about God or using any so-called religious language it uses the language of relationships and at the heart of it is a central relationship between one person a being who embodies experience purpose a sense of destination and another who is dependent taking no responsibility for things intent on themselves and their own pleasures and it does all this in quite a benign and innocent sounding way but since it is a story where both father and son are figments in a fable we don't for a minute believe this story describes an actual historical event I hope you don't we know it's affection but one which portrays a pattern of behavior a relationship and invites us to identify to seek out the reality or the truth to experience or the echo of our own experience in that path in that story it's at that level that a fiction in bodies or can embody embody truth as we reflect on this simple seeming tale we might well want to see the father as standing for a wise God and the son for dependent Wayward Humanity that provides a very neat explanation as it were of the fable but we might be being taken in by the ingenuous Simplicity of the tale and simply translating it into religious cliches if I may be forgiven for saying so instead we may since neither God nor mankind is mentioned indeed no such Grand concepts are named or even explicitly hinted at explicitly hinted at we may go on to consider that we each have in US something of the father and something of the child we are being invited to identify with both father and child and to share their predicament looked at in this way we might say that there is that in each of us which takes responsibility for the journey and also that within each of us which is intent on the present pleasure on satisfying our desires happy to turn aside from the great wonders and questions of life that's posed to us from what we might call the true trajectory of Our Lives that trajectory from our beginning to our end the Fulfillment of that unique Destiny through which our potential might come to fruition now if Yom Kippur speaks of atonement of our seeking to become act one the clue is in the word atonement at one moment it invites us to draw together into some Fuller Integrity some kind of Inner Harmony or shalom the aspects of ourselves which are at variance in us which upset our inner peace as for example the father and the child in the story pulling in different directions what surely sets Yom Kippur apart from other festivals is his invitation to inwardness it sets our duties towards others our duty to put rights so far as we can the hurt we've caused others and our responsibility for others and the World At Large it sets all these in the context of setting ourselves right we understand we can only be of better service to others when we are not hampered by Inner Conflict by destructive urges habits that limit us and in the period of teshuva repentance we turn not to therapy or medicaments or food or alcohol and other palliatives but to the fast and to the Liturgy of this unique day a day in which we conjure up in our minds and in our hearts a solemn sense of standing in a holy Court of judgment placing ourselves under the eyes of one who in the words of our Sharma prayer shows no favor and takes no bribes whose ways are righteous and all of whose Deeds are loved myself considering again our story of the father and the child this the same father before whom we see ourselves standing you may prefer to say imagine ourselves standing and I believe it comes to the same thing and it isn't and isn't indeed that father that judge that loving Guardian righteous and kind parent also an aspect of ourselves aren't we in a profound sense looking for that being in ourselves seeking to reconcile ourselves become at one with him with her but never with it in our own being until we enter into this relationship as person to person as one being to another we truly do not enter in but remain outside looking towards or for something and we may well find our search has no end we may come to think there is nothing there while all the time there may be something in here in each of us when we say blessings for wine for bread for almost everything in every circumstance we better begin Baruch blessed are you you and whatever words we add to that opening address we're adding them to a relationship Atta you thou we establish a relationship of our being to another or we call for a relationship or we call up a relationship and if as so often it seems to us there is no reply as has often been said prayer is a phone call to a number that never picks up then that too is mentioned in our Hasidic story when the child calls out father father and no longer hears a reply the moment the father is too far off we read but as soon as you can no longer hear my answer know that you are lost and run with all your strength to find me not find it not prove God to yourself find me we may be the child in the story but the moment we find ourselves truly on our own we must take responsibility for ourselves and we must up and run and search for what is lost which after all may be the best in ourselves the wise self waiting to be found in fact Yom Kippur calls on us to consider ourselves lost and in need of finding our truth it is and this surely is a consolation a source of Hope it is in fact not until we have known loss that we can truly make our way back a Hasidic teaching states that someone who has made to shuva acknowledging their fault even their loss of a sense of a divine presence in their being and tried to put themselves right is seen by God as standing higher than the perfect sagic the perfectly righteous person it is that search that Kavanagh that intention for tashuva that counts and the root take on that search is taught us very plainly to begin with oneself but not to end with oneself to start from oneself but not to aim at oneself to comprehend oneself but not to be preoccupied with oneself it's in the web and the reciprocity of our relationships I to you and not I to it that our tradition promises us we will find a way to that integrity and strengthening peace which is where we encounter truly meet and join with the Divine in ourselves and in others I wish you sealed for a good a good year amen all right thank you perhaps the process we're about to begin now fits perfectly to the words of robitoni it is seeking it is Seeking a search of our truth true self it's called the confession the vidui in Hebrew and it is difficult it is painful who likes to return to the part and lay bear their wrongdoings but done sincerely the outcome I would say is magnificent as it opens a great way also to Exodus chapter 33 verse 12 to chapter 34 Verse 9. then Moses said to the Lord look you say to me bring up this people but you have not let me know whom you will send with me also you have said I have known you by name and you have indeed gained my favor if I have truly gained your favor then please let me know your ways so that I may know you and continue to gain your favor foresee this nation is your people and he said my presence will go with you and I will give you rest but he said to him if your presence does not go with us do not bring us up from here for how shall it be known that I and your people have gained your favor unless you go with us so that we may be distinguished your people and I from every other people on the face of the Earth and the Lord said to Moses I will also do this thing that you ask for you have truly gained my favor and I have known you by name then he said oh let me see your glory and he answered I will make all my goodness pass before you before your face and proclaim the name of the Lord before you and I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious and show Mercy to whom I will show Mercy but he added you cannot see my face for no human may see me and live and the Lord said see there is a place near me take your stand upon the rock and as my glory passes by I will place you in a cleft in the Rock and shield you with my hand until I have passed by then I will take away my hand and you will see my back but my face may not be seen then the Lord said to Moses call for yourself two tablets of stone like the first and I will write on the tablets of Words which were on the first tablets which you shattered be ready by morning and in the morning you shall go up to Mount Sinai and take your stand there before me on the top of the mountain no one shall go up with you and no one should be seen on the whole Mountain even the flocks and herds shall not graze before that mountain so he carved two tablets of stone like the first and Moses arose in the morning and went up Mount Sinai to as the Lord had commanded him and he took the two tablets of stone with him and the Lord came down in a cloud and he stood with him there and proclaimed the name of the Lord then the Lord passed before him and proclaimed the Lord the Lord a god of mercy and compassion slow to anger generous in love and truth extending love to the Southern's generation to giving wrong and failure but not leaving the guilty unpunished visiting the sin of the parents on children and children's children on the third and fourth Generations then Moses hastened to Bow his head and bend low in worship and he said if I have gained your favor O Lord then may the Lord go amongst us for this is a stiff-necked people pardon our sin and our failure and take us for your own foreign [Music] foreign [Music] amen is [Music] foreign foreign [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] amen is foreign foreign [Music] oh man [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] foreign foreign amen [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] come in viorated foreign foreign [Music] foreign I just won before Ella is running away just so once again thank you for reading the Torah and I can or perhaps some of you have um read about it we will honor and we thank Ella for all her commitment to this congregation and for reading the Torah Scrolls often with being our um kala for um devarim so on this we will we want to give a little bit back to you and say thank you and as we swap the Scrolls can you please rise so they will also then can lift the second strong ER [Music] once again once again please all fine you didn't and we have the English and I just um so you will see that we skipped some um of the reading in between um so we do a little jump so um and there was a question or a challenge which I love when I always um I like to be challenged in between um so while we're doing this and it's a good question because what we're skipping is about the sacrificial um request God is putting in the middle of those readings about how we should um yeah come to the idea or process of being holy and pulling a reformed tradition the classical reform tradition um we jumped a little bit over the sacrifice um that was asked to be shared and brought to the Eternal and some commandments so if you don't eat it in time so you have to um so you're committing a sin and so it's all a little bit problematic within all this un other wonderful readings where it says you shall not steal you should pay the debt of um to the um worker you have to the laborer um and so on and therefore we follow this tradition that um I invite you all to come to one of the Torah studies we will do and then we will perhaps discover together the question how we can even create a meaningful relationship to those words of the Torah that speak about something we feel perhaps not comfortable with like the sacrificial system so that is for the year to come for now I thank you for reading for us the translation and you can give also the page numbers thank you the reading the reading from the second scroll is Leviticus chapter 19 verses 1 to 4 and verses 11 to 18 and can be found on page 926 of the marsor the Lord spoke to Moses saying speak to the whole Israelite community and say to them you shall be holy for I the Lord your God I'm holy you shall each Revere his mother and his father and keep my sabbaths I the Lord am your God do not turn to ideals or make Morton gods for yourselves I the Lord am your God you shall not steal you shall not deal deceitfully or falsely with one another you shall not swear falsely by my name profaning the name of your God I am the Lord You shall not defraud your fellow you shall not commit robbery the wage of the laborer shall not remain with you until morning you shall not insult the death or place a stumbling block before the blind you shall fear your God I am the Lord you shall not render an unfair decision do not Clear away take the obstacles from my from my people's way for thus says the high and exalted one who dwells in eternity whose name is Holy high and holy is my dwelling but I am present with the contrite and humble Spirit Reviving The Spirit of the humble Reviving The Heart of the contrite I will not quarrel forever nor be angry for all time for people's Spirits would fail before me the Souls which I have made for the sin of his greed I was angered and struck him in my anger I hid my face so he went astray after his willful heart I have seen his ways and will heal him I will guide him give him Comfort to him and to those which within Israel who mourn God creates the fruit of the lips says peace peace to the far and the near it is the Lord who says and I will heal him but the wicked are like the tossing sea when it cannot rest and its Waters toss up Maya and mud there is no peace says my God for the wicked cry aloud keep nothing back Raise Your Voice like the shafar blast tell my people their crimes the house of Jacob their sins indeed they seek me day after day and yearn to know my ways like a nation that does what is right and never abandoned the law of its God they ask me for righteous laws and yearn to be close to God why have we fasted if you do not see why afflict ourselves if you pay no heed because on the day of your fast you put your business first and force your workers to labor because you only fast for quarrel and strife for striking vicious blows if that is how you fast this day you will not be Heard on High fast I have chosen the day for a man's self-denial to Bow his head like a bull rush to grovel in sackcloth and Ashes is this what you call a fast a day the Lord would accept it's not this the fast I have chosen to loosen the Fetters of evil to untie the straight the struts of the Yoke to let the oppressed Go free and whatever the Yoke to break it is it not sharing your food with the hungry and bringing the homeless into your home when you see the naked to clothe them never hiding from your own flesh and blood then shall your light break through like Dawn and your healing quickly spring up then your righteousness will go before you and the glory of the Lord will follow you then if you call the Lord will answer if you cry to him he will say here I am if you do go away with the Yoke the pointing figure The Vicious word if your feelings reach out to the hungry and you satisfy the needs of The Wretched then your light will rise like Dawn out of the darkness and your dusk will be like the noon then the Lord will guide you forever he will satisfy the thirst of your soul and give your body its strength you shall be like a watered Garden like a spring whose Waters never fail some from among you will build the old waste places laying foundations for ages to come and you will be called repairer of Broken Walls restorer of streets to dwell in if you refrain from trampling the Sabbath from doing your business on my holy day if you call the Sabbath Delight the Lord's holy day honored and honor it not by going your own ways not doing business not nor discussing affairs then you will find Delight in the Lord I will let turn from his ways of LA and life and live to the day of his death you wait for him whenever he returns at once you are there to welcome him you are their creator you know the nature of your creatures the weakness of common flesh and blood man comes from the dust and ends in dust he spends his life earning his living but he is fragile like a cub so easily broken like grass that Withers like flowers that fade like passing Shadows into solving clouds a fleeting Breeze and dust that scatters like a dream that Fades away foreign [Music] your years have no limit and your days have no end we cannot sugar it is [Music] [Music] Lamar [Music] [Music] your eyes I know [Music] the Dover Donuts therefore [Music] Eternal God said such fear on every human being and such dread on all your creatures that and endurance that men need are in your hands and the fear of God is upon all your creatures oh the hand therefore May the honor of your people be seen in the glory of those who fear you alone let Hope come to those who seek you and confidence to those who wait for you bring happiness to your land and joy to your City May the work of redemption begin with David flourish in you and may the light of the Messianic Kingdom shine out soon in your days [Music] therefore the just will see and be glad the honest rejoice and the faithful breaks into song for the mouth of evil will be shut and wickedness vanish like smoke when you Swept Away the rule of arrogance from the Earth foreign [Music] oh my God I mean characters foreign Our God and God of our fathers guide our lips as they move in prayer and guide the lips of those who lead the community in prayer as they take this service today and ask mercy and Grace for your People Israel let them understand what ought to be said and how to say it directly clearly without hesitation let nothing be said that is untrue to you we know Lord Our God that people only find Grace when you give it and no mercy when you show it it is written in the Torah of Moses your servant and the Lord said I will make all my goodness pass before your face and proclaim the name of the Lord before you and I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious and show Mercy to whom I show Mercy thank you and um we're now enter this wonderful and very special moment in our service where we re-enact somehow this holy ritual that once took place in the temple and in the wilderness in the sanctuary where the high priest confessed the sins of God's people and you will see there is some choreography in it but it is a very special moment in it so because we once feel connected with the generations before us and we are just a link in this eternal chain it started once with Abram and Sarah please turn to page 467 for the introductional reading you who now hear this ancient ritual consider it and ponder it in your innermost heart turn it turn it for your life is in it the words have journeyed to us over the centuries but the Bullocks temples and Priests have gone Purity sin and sacrifice remain and they shape our life and transform our destiny the rights have gone worn by change and laid aside by time but the meaning they contained remains let us examine the old signs the symbols of our life on Earth like a high priest we prepare ourselves to approach them in Purity and Truth we read in unfamiliar language of lost symbols and seek the purpose of our life in this world Barbarian Mel will open the ark for us and we're on page four six eight think online one one six came the high priests to the holy place he used to come with a bull which was then sacrificed for sin to atone for himself and his family he used to lay his hand on the ball's head and he confessed Anna Hashem a city versus [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] and when the priest and the Nay and the people standing in the temple Court heard the Glorious and awesome name of God which was uttered by the mouth of the high priest in Holiness and Purity only on the day for atonement then they brought down bow down and knelt and fell before down prone with their face on the ground and they cried out [Music] and the high priests continued to dwell on the Holy Name while the people finished their response only then would he complete the verse he had begun [Music] [Applause] [Music] you may be seated and we are at the bottom of page four six nine where is this high priest who came to serve us where is he now Among Us since the temple was destroyed no high priest comes to serve our people yet the holy work continues though his position is no more each one of us is now a priest in a kingdom of priests confessing our sins but asking Mercy For All mortal and fallible we mediate a Grace and Glory beyond our understanding the high priest was robbed in white the Investments what does this whiteness mean to us it is the whiteness of the Kittle and the white wrapping of the Torah scroll it is the Purity from which we come and the Purity to which we return for the soul you have given us is pure and then he for the Lord walking out the other as a scapegoat for the sins of our people but first he approached the ball which was sacrificed for sin not only for himself and his family but also for his colleagues the quranim who took service these animals won't set aside for Slaughter what meaning can they have for us they are the wealth we have been given and the wealth we must give up for we become part of what we possess and if we cannot sacrifice our possessions we are not free the temple was destroyed long ago and little remains to our tables are his altars our homes and synagogues his sanctuaries his presence is revealed in prayer he makes his dwelling in our hearts pitch 473 then the hypers slew the ball which was the sacrifice for his own sin and accepted it and accepted its blood he took a sensor full of glowing Golds from the Lord's altar his hands were filled with incense made from spices beaten small after he brought them behind the veil he puts the incense on the fire that burned in the presence of the Eternal then he took the blood of the bowl sprinkled it seven times upon before the seed of Mercy so we're in yes a veil once separated the high priest from God the visible rights from his in his impressions but we've become a nothing can separate us from God who is everywhere a mystery surrounds our life what lies before it and what lies after it are veiled from our sight but with our sacrifice of goodness the offerings of our daily life the veil is raised we discern the purpose of our time on Earth and God who dwells within us the smoke of the incense is gone and the smell of the spices lingles no more in their time they purified the sanctuary what does their memory purify in US the smoke of the incense is the presence of God which surrounds us our lives are hallowed by the fragrance of prayer and goodness together they purify the sanctuary that lies within us and this sanctuary in which we pray and he also slew the goat which was marked out for the Eternal and did the same with its blood as he had done with the balls and he put the blood blood of both on the horns of the Altar and sprinkled it seven times and as he drew nearer to give life to the Lifeguard he put his two hands on its hand page four seven five The Mercy Seat is sprinkled with blood the blood of sacrifice does mercy need such offlings and forgiveness requires such rituals not with words alone do we seek Mercy but with the sacrifice of our wealth and time the offering of our daily life and of a broken and contrite heart blood is scattered on the Altar and we recoil does god require the blood of Bullocks and today when Temple priests and sacrifice have gone whose blood must it be it must be ours our life's blood we must sacrifice more than we possess we must offer what we are for all that we have and are are his and he Ascend The Lifeguard with an appointed man who led it into the Wilderness then the high priest made the offering for himself and his people to atone for himself and for his people as we remember the scapegoat for Azazel an animal led to the Wilderness we remember the sins for which we have not atoned the evil whose consequences Remain the people have not prayed the terrible things that have been done in ignorance the Scarlet threat of shame in our life and all that remains unreconciled to you they are not cast into the depths of the sea and no goat now takes them to the Wilderness but you can bring them into Oblivion and repair All That Remains undone may this be your will amen you know in the middle of page 477 this was the prayer of the high priest on the day of atonement after it come out of the holy of holies peacefully and says Serene eternal God and God of our ancestors may be your role that this year to bring will this year to bring us and all your people a good harvest and a blessing may it bring all the good things that come from you do you rain and warmth let it be a year of ripening fruits a year of atonement for our sins a year in which you bless our food and drink a year of Commerce a year of Plenty a year of Joy a year in which you bless the fruit of the womb and the fruit of the land a year in which you bless our comings and our goings a year in which you show us your compassion a year of peace and Tranquility a year in which you bring us home rejoicing to our land a year in which your People Israel will not require support from one another or from other people the work of their hands bring fully blessed being fully blessed by you and for those who live in the region of Sharon in danger of sudden earthquakes he said a special prayer Eternal God and God of our ancestors do not let their homes become their graves return to page four seven eight and were in the second half of the page and if you are able to please rise [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] goodness and mercy it is written in the Torah and the Lord came down in a cloud he stood there with him and proclaimed the name of the Eternal then the Eternal passed before him and proclaimed foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] thank you you may be seated now give you a short moment to read the concluding prayers of the amida of the musaf amida in silence thank you to our quartet foreign on page 771 regret is a great art in which fewer expert the chief purpose of regret is not to feel sorry for evil actions but to uproot evil from its very source whoever is not expert in this art tends to use his power of regret to strengthen the evil within him and not weaken it the wicked are as full of regrets as a pomegranate is full of seeds nonetheless they do not know what regret is precisely because they have so many regrets they tend to grow hardened in their wickedness what I mean is best expressed by the image of two wrestlers when one sees that the other is about to subdue him he sums up strength with which to withstand the attack and so it goes from round to round by the same token in proper regrets which are based in the human passions for Conquest represent a form of wrestling with evil and can therefore become a way of evoking redoubled efforts by the evil one thank you and with these words from we turn to the confessional prayer the vidui of the after of the Mustafa service which begins on page 484. foreign let us think of all that is small and mean in us the little sins that carry us away from God for Cheating in false measure or failure to be the people God intended or forgiving God we think of the sick we never visited we need the needy we never helped the people we kept waiting and all those who we let down truly we are ashamed we have not murdered others but we have wounded them and our souls perhaps we do not steal but we have cheated others and ourselves for all this forgive us pardon us and grant us atonement please rise foreign we're on page 484. not a problem and you may open the ark for and mother acts of generosity and love coming early to the synagogue for morning and evening study giving Hospitality to strangers visiting the sick assisting the bride attending the Dead devotion in prayer making peace between a man and His companion and the study of Torah leads to them all we remember the goodness on which our lives are built the gift to us of many people we remember the poverty of our ancestors and their silent struggle and sacrifice that we might have a better life we remember all who have helped us strangers or friends by kindness or with money or through their example it is their sacrifice and offerings that have built that our lives are built the Torah of God is written in the lives of many people who are forgotten by us but known to him we read the book of life and generation has served you and witnessed you witnessed to you trying to do you will in the world remember for our sake the greatest sacrifices Hashem the sanctification of your name by our lives foreign [Music] in return to page 497 some saw a light in darkness which is beyond our vision and their life and death were changed Ordinary People saw this light and it made them extraordinary unexpected people came forward and witnessed to this light and its Purity they themselves became a light to others and remained so for us now truly this light was sown for the righteous we were page 498 and we have Libby reading for us from Anne Frank's diary that's the difficulty in these times ideals dreams and cherished hopes rise within us only to meet the horrible truth and be shattered it's really a wonder that I haven't dropped all my ideals because they seem to have said and impossible to carry out yet I keep them because in spite of everything I still believe that people are really good at heart I simply can't build up my hopes on a foundation consisting of confusion misery and death I see the world graduate gradually being turned into a Wilderness I hear that ever approaching Thunder which will destroy us too I can feel the suffering of millions and yet if I look up into the heavens I think that it will all come right that this cruelty too will end and that peace and Tranquility will return again in the meantime I must uphold my ideals for perhaps the time will come when I shall be able to carry them out thank you very much on page 499 be our door [Music] I'll be okay [Music] foreign [Music] they could compromise and could only trust God appeared to them in the darkness of their faith not according to the light of the understanding yet they found the strength to face the darkness and Trust we see the light such people became in their faith enlightens us though they could not see it themselves page 500 second reading by Hugo grin I did not learn this lesson about faith in a theological college that came much later but in a miserable little concentration camp in German Celestia grotesquely called librose lovely rose it was the cold winter of 1944 and although we had nothing like calendars my father who was my fellow prisoner there took me and some of our friends to a corner in our Barrack he announced that it was the eve of Hanukkah produced a curious shaped clay bowl and began to light a wick immersed in his precious but now melted margarine ration before he could recite the blessing i protested at this waste of food he looked at me then at the lamp and finally said you and I have seen that it is possible to live up to three weeks without food we once lived almost three days without water but you cannot live properly for three minutes without hope page 501 mean [Music] foreign [Music] are we foreign [Music] thank you foreign [Music] foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] on me [Music] we remember all those who were stripped of all their Illusions and false hopes and tried to hold fast to the truth they witnessed and reported in reported Faithfully they saw the depth they knew the horror but did not take refuge in Comfort brought to cheaply we honor them your faithful Witnesses who rode us for us the scripture of their lives and times with words that did not lie some of my friends and acquaintances who know the secret of my diary urge me in their despair to stop writing why for what purpose will you live to see it published will these words of yours reach the ears of future Generations how if you're deported you won't be able to take it with you because the Nazis will watch your every move and even if you succeed in hiding it when you leave Warsaw you will undoubtedly die on the way for your strength is ebbing and if you don't die from lack of strength you'll die by the Nazi sword for not a single deportee will be able to hold out to the end of the war and yet in spite of it all I refuse to listen to them I feel that continuing this diary to the very end of my physical and spiritual strength is a historical Mission which must not be abandoned my mind is still clear my need to record unstilled though it is now five days since any real food has passed my lips therefore I will not silence my diary [Music] she does we think of those who sow no light who profess nor faith and found no answer like then we are left with our questioning for in this life we do not see the reward of righteousness page 504 but as a Survivor myself I can at least testify that most of those who have survived went through that Universe the Concentration Camp Universe with withdrawn antennae divorced from truth from reality from normal human and Humane values substituting those with a different code and rituals which may look crazy or perverted the choice in order to survive was losing one's Humanity were inventing a new one losing one's dignity or inventing new symbols to keep it one went on by forgetting immediately what had been done to one or what one had done the day before thus being able to face the next blow for many all that was left of their Humane human countenance was a feeling of Shame for being able to suffer what others were not to survive what others did not and be tormented by external question did one outlive the others because one was less sensitive or even worse did one live in some way at the expense of the death of others there is hardly a Survivor articulate or not who does not feel persecuted and Accused by his dead companions who in the deepest chamber of his soul does not feel his own Staying Alive vis-a-vis dying and only temporary reprieve in that sense one has not at all rejoined the world of the living one is here merely waiting for the final call and we are
