are you a good steward of the authority that God has given to you it doesn't matter who you are even if you're a believer or not God has given to all people a certain degree of authority and you are going to be judged on how you manage that authority so don't be a person that connives and deceives don't be an individual that tries to manipulate others to do your will remember what Messiah said when he spoke and says behold there's one in whom there is no guile a straightforward honest person of integrity when that's important to you you are going to make good decisions you are going to have discernment but when you're all about micromanaging things creating things according to your desire you are going to be deceived and use as a vessel of the enemy take out your Bible and look with me to the Book of Luke and chapter 23 the Book of Luke and chapter 23 now we see here that Messiah he has already been arrested he is taken before the Sanhedrin he has been examined and at the end of this trial which by the way does not follow proper protocol according to the laws of the Sanhedrin but never less at the end of that trial he confesses that he is the son of God and when that was proclaimed it brought and into the trial and what we find is there was no more witnesses no more testimony nothing more presented but what took place well what was already predetermined by the Sanhedrin you know they use false witnesses they met under darkness they did many things in order to manifest to the reader that they weren't about truth they were trying to manipulate the situation in accomplishing what they thought would be best rather than what the laws and the truth and the statues of God would demand see do what is right and lead the consequences the results to God but when you have to be in control well you are inviting the enemy into your life so when we pick up in chapter 23 we read in verse 1 and all their multitude and this multitude of people is very different than what we've been talking about in the last several studies this is the multitude that belonged to the Sanhedrin not only those elders and high priests and rulers but also their servants the servants that were Jewish and also the Roman guard that was assigned to the Sanhedrin so we're talking about several hundred people and they get up after they heard his Schule confessed that he was the son of God they all get up and it says in the middle of verse one and he was led to pilot this multitude took him to Pilate now right there if you know anything about the Sanhedrin you see a great problem because never with the Sanhedrin ever take a fellow Jew and have him be tried by the Roman courts now sometimes that happened but the Sanhedrin was never in favor of that they always protested that they felt that every Jew should be trialed under a Jewish court not the Romans but here we have that taking place not on they bequest of Rome but on the bequest of the Sanhedrin so you don't have to go very far in this chapter to see something's wrong something is not according to the protocol that the Sanhedrin is supposed to function with and when they came before Pilate notice what it says and they began to accuse him speak in other words words of guilt saying this one we have found and literally it says corrupting the nation now throughout this this trial they give no evidence and other Gospels what you read is basically trust me Pilate we wouldn't have brought him before you unless he was really bad but all they do is make charges of guiltiness without providing any evidence whatsoever they say he corrupts the people but they don't say how now this may be because of their perspective you see he is leading the people to God's Way his truth his direction and not the direction of the Sanhedrin you see at this time the Sanhedrin was not about the laws of God about scriptural truth no they had bought into a different tradition a tradition of the elders and what we read and what you learn in Matthew 15 is this when you followed the traditions of man you forsake the Word of God and that was the corruption that characterized the Sanhedrin at this time now they were wise men they didn't use that wisdom for godly purposes but they were wise they knew exactly what to say to a Roman official in order to manipulate him and to get him to do their desire and not the desires of God why do I say that well press on in the scripture we see here and in verse two in the middle it says speaking about Yeshua here's the charge he forbids to Caesar to give taxes and that's not true but if you know anything about the Roman Empire see they were very very different than the Greek Empire the Greek Empire wanted everyone to conform and become Greek didn't matter what your background what your ethnicity was you had to speak the Greek language and you had to live as a Greek the Romans very very different they could care less about anything as long as two things were met you could worship you could behave do what you want enjoy your culture speak your language as long number one pay your taxes and number two do not revote against the Empire if you didn't revote you paid your taxes you were relatively free so what do they say two things he forbids to pay taxes to caesar and furthermore he says concerning himself that he is the messiah in other words that he is the king and what they wanted Pilate to concur was this that there was a threat to leadership there that his desire was to become the authority now Pilate being the authority for Rome and Jerusalem I mean this should have captured his attention and what's amazing about this passages Pilate is very calm in fact when you read other Gospels accounts Pilate more than anything else and we'll see some of that in Luke's study is that he wanted to set Yeshua free remember his wife his wife all wipes are provided as a helpmate as a source of wisdom and counsel and remember Pontius Pilate his wife came and said I've had dreams these dreams have troubled me don't do anything against and what did she call you sure a righteous man so now he's hearing from his wife this one is righteous and I believe that Pilate accepted that I believe Pilate knew that I believe that Pilate really began to think maybe this is the king but here's the problem you can't have it both ways you can't accomplish your will and be faithful and obedient to God's will they're mutually exclusive and as long as we hang on to our will we are going to be used by the enemy and we are not going to bring glory to God we are going to do those things that we will regret for all of eternity so these people say the Sanhedrin he says concerning himself that he is the Messiah that he is king look now to verse 3 but Pilate now there's that word he hears what they're saying but this conjunction means he doesn't really agree he's unsure so Pilate asome he says are you the King of the Jews a cloaking for Messiah are you really the Messiah and notice must Messiah doesn't deny that he says as you have said he agrees that he is the king verse 4 and Pilate says to the high priests and to the crowd and he's going to say this three times remember by two or three witnesses things are confirmed the number three in the Bible we'll see this later on tonight when we speak of the resurrection but three has a way of documenting revealing confirming something and Pilate is going to testify himself three times he's going to examine him and says I have found nothing guilty in this man now shouldn't that settle it Pilate has absolute authority for own how he judges that's it there's no appeal Pilate Israel you appeal to Caesar let's see we get so Pilate has the last word but he doesn't use it as will see properly he says the first time verse four I have found nothing of guilt in this man now the Sanhedrin brought him to Pilate for judgment Pilate examine him he questioned him are you the King of the Jews you should say yes I am and Pilate and mealy Turin said I have found nothing guilty in this one and notice the response that should have ended it but it wasn't what they wanted to hear therefore all the more so or with greater strength they were saying he stirs up the people you see they made the fur accusation he doesn't want people to pay taxes to Caesar that didn't accomplish their goal so now they level the second charge insurrection a rebelle of rebellion against Rome it says he stirs up the people and he teaches on the whole way all the way in Judea from beginning and Galilee all the way until here so he's saying hey this man has influence he has been teaching all the way from Galilee right here into Judea all the jury all the people have heard of his plans for insurrection that's what stirring up the people means so now they say it's just not that he doesn't want people to pay taxes but it's more than that he is leading a rebellion among the jury the Jewish people against Caesar now those were serious charges and it's amazing that Pilate doesn't receive them Pilate doesn't accept them as fact he is free to examine and reach his own conclusions now when he heard something when he heard all the way from Galilee here he asked the question Pilate when he heard Galilee he asked is this man a Galilean is he from this area now when you are given an opportunity to do good when you had been entrusted with authority use that authority stand up take a stand for what is right don't be like so many people who have authority in this nation when they just want to kind of pass it on to someone else they want to keep their position so much the the teach the honor the the wealth of that position but they're really not interested in doing what that position demands utilizing authority for that which is right that which has integrity that which is ultimately that which is pleasing to God Pilate heard Galilee and he said I can get out of this I don't have to make a decision I don't have to do my job I can pass it on to someone else so when he heard that he was a Galilean when he knew this he says ah he's out of the authority of Harald so he sent him to Herod because he knew something the fact that in Jerusalem and those days were also herod he had come down from the Galilee this Herod in order to be there in Jerusalem for Passover so for Pilate standpoint end of problem now he's not concerned about being a righteous influence he's not concerned about justice he's passing on the the problem to Herod maybe heritable do the right thing many he won't but he could take a stand no he's not about integrity look at verse 8 so now you're sure he was arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane he was taken to the Sanhedrin now at the judgment Hall of Rome under the auspices of Pontius Pilate and now he sent elsewhere in Jerusalem to be heard and tried by Herod verse 8 and Herod seeing Yeshua he was exceedingly glad now he's from the Galilee most of your shoes ministry most of his miracles most of his jeans were in that location this Erin had heard about Yeshua and he was exceedingly glad to finally see him the text says if we keep reading for quite some time he was desiring to see him and to hear concerning his his many many things he's heard many things about him and he wanted to hear and he wanted to see a sign that would be done by him now here again not interested in truth not wanting to know the message of this man he just wanted to see some miraculous spectacle and here's a problem many people are moved many people respond to simply spectacles they see a sign and a wonder but they don't understand the message of that sign and Wonder and if they don't what happens is this the enemy's always there right he's that that that pouncing lion waiting to wat brain confusion and brain corruption and therefore if you don't understand the message of the miracle and you're just impressed by the supernatural aspect you'll go in the wrong direction well you sure he was going to participate he didn't respond to any of the questions of Herod he did not do any miracle before him and if you drop down to verse 10 you find that the high priests and the scribes they came they just didn't trust well we'll just turn it over to God and let Pontius Pilate or now Herod render the verdict no they had to what manipulate things when things weren't going how they want they began to speak and try to put pressure and tried to control the situation don't try to control do the right thing leave the results trust that God is in it if you are his servant if you are his vessel be about his business and the results they belong to him so these high priests these scribes they were standing and they began to to protest more vehement ly they began to accuse him and what else do we see here they began to do something else verse 11 we see that they mocked and this is really hurt and he mocked him that is Herod with the soldiers these would be Roman soldiers and they they mocked him by placing upon him these beautiful garments probably royal garments because he had said that he was a king and they did what else they sent him back to Pilate now I'm sure Pilate thought that's out of my hands hair he can deal with it he can try to settle this with the Sanhedrin I'm not interested and no sooner does he think this then knock on the door there's Yeshua now what do we see here you know what you just can't pass on who is this Yeshua you're going to have to make a decision no decision is a decision and you better make that decision with all the information all the evidence that you can provide so Yeshua comes back to Pilate now verse 13 and Pilate summoning once more the high priests and their rulers and the people so there is an assembly there now remember something what day are we talking about preparation day what's another way of saying preparation day the answer is silver now these high priests you know the high priests they had a very important role primarily it involve the altar they said what made for a proper sacrifice and what did not and now we're talking about Passover when lambs a quarter of a million lambs will be offered up they're not at their posts they're not doing their thing they are more concerned about seeing a fellow Jew put to death so these individuals they are the leadership they're not the masses of people but they are the representatives of the people that's what this text is trying to convey so once more pilots submarine summoning the high priests and the rulers and also the people he says to them you have brought before me this man for misleading the people and behold I before you have examined him and here he says and I have found in this man no guilt of which you have accused him furthermore he says I have sent him to Herod meaning he says I have sent to you as you required meaning I took your requests and I gave it to Herod and it came back to me also Herod had found nothing that would cause this man to be sentenced to death no act such as this so now verse 16 he says therefore I will punish him now pay attention to that word punish we learned that this punishment that he intends it's not just some fine it is a horrible beating and pilots intent is this that he is going to beat you up so severely that it will suffice the the Sanhedrin and those individuals will look upon that suffering and say well it's enough it's pretty severe no more but you see the problem Pilate says I have examined him and found no guilt whatsoever in him Herod likewise found nothing worthy of death as you are accusing him we don't see it how you sit now normally you would think that a Roman official that would end it but here's the problem Pilate wants to hold on to that position he loves it and he's concerned if these leaders we're not talking about the Jewish people in general collectively just the leaders if these leaders don't get what they want if I can't satisfy them if we can't come to some compromise they are going to bring report back to Rome and it can be very uncomfortable for me I can be replaced like that now let me share with you something when you want something so bad of this world and your greatest fear is that you might lose it Satan will hone in on that see you don't need that you don't need these things that that you might love and covet what you need is obedience and if that means you lose your job that's okay that'll provide another job maybe a better job when you say no myself identity Who I am how I get my my pleasure whatever it may be is based in this I can't let go I cannot compromise I will not let go of that Satan says I know how to feed him I know what to do in order to manipulate him in doing my will anything that you can't let go of has got a hold of you you need to pray because it is the place where Satan will attack you don't worry about the results do what is right and you're gonna find that in the end your intimacy with God knowing that you pleased him it's going to satisfy you much more than anything that you can have and hold on to and touch and fill in this world so he says I will will punish him and set him go furthermore look now at verse 17 he says you know there's a cultural solution to this and it didn't originate with the Romans it was something that you folks meaning the Sanhedrin brought upon us now Passover this is the day Passover is about freedom it is about Liberty that's what Redemption gives us so in order to celebrate and be aware of the true meaning of Passover going free there was this tradition to let go the leader of Rome in Jerusalem would let go one prisoner that's what is sister for we have it means an obligation a need according to the tradition to set free to them meaning the sin he drew at the festival one person now Luke tells his story rapidly what you don't see in Luke is that Pontius Pilate you know he didn't become a ruler he didn't get that position because he didn't have a little bit of political savvy he knew how to manipulate people he knew how to get what he wanted so what Pontius Pilate did was to choose someone and give the people a choice you can either have this one go free or you can have Yeshua go free now we know who he chose he chose Yeshua that's that other you sure right because you may know him by Barabbas but Barabbas is his family name Abba is his father he's the son of ABBA his first name is Yeshua so some scholars fill that he chose him because if the people said yushua well we have one to you shoes and then Pontius Pilate could say okay I'll choose this one and are you sure could go free there's another reason why he chose Barabbas it says in the text read carefully it says that this one were in verse 19 this Barabbas whom was on account of insurrection he was a rebel but you have to pay attention who did he rebelled against more often that people think Rome no because those who are guilty of insurrection against Rome they never made it to prison they were just put to death there there was no punishment other than death the Romans wanted everyone to know you rebelled against our authority you die it was a death sentence immediately so the fact that he was in prison and not dead for insurrection what we are to glean from that is that his rebellion was not first and foremost against Rome but you know who it was against the Sanhedrin and in carrying out this rebellion in the city he also committed look at the end of verse nineteen he committed murder now it's probably murder against a fellow Jew and for this reason he was cast into prison what's more a Jew who killed a Roman official even a soldier once more you didn't throw him in prison you put him to death when immediately so all of this is information to you and me the reader to understand what was in Pontius Pilate spine he wanted you sure to go free but wait a second who is Pontius Pilate he is the authority his words go there's no appeal process he makes the decision that's it so why is he playing these games why can't he just simply say I have found and I've told you once and now twice there's no guilt in this man I have it on authority from Herod there's nothing worthy of death so I'll punish him he's going free in the story I'm in charge here but he didn't do that because he had fear if I do what is right it might cost me my job let me tell you no job is worth doing the wrong thing no job God can supply all of your needs don't worry about I have to hold on to this because when you're holding on to that in actuality you're taking hold of the enemy you're grasping Satan so Pontius Pilate he thinks he's got this figured out I mean certainly the Sanhedrin and this just simply supports that the one who's going to make the decision the one who is going to influence the people here again if you read John's Gospel none of the people who would be in this judgment hall would have been Jewish because John's Gospel tells us that because of impurity being so close to Passover the Jews wouldn't go in so there was other folks there why remember the Old West I mean if you wanted to get a big crowd in the square of the city all you had to do was one hang someone everyone comes out to see that same thing here there's going to be a death someone is going to be flogged I want to see that that's the mentality of people so Pontius Pilate what did he do he thought if I put Barabbas as the option he's the enemy of the sin he turned he's against them he's rebelled against them he's killed one of them certainly they'll choose Yeshua from that threat instead of him but they did if you look now at verse 18 they say take this one meaning Yeshua take him and send or let free to us Barabbas and Barabbas he was this one on account of insurrection having brought about in the city and also murder was cast into prison therefore again Pontius Pilate he called and says do you want me to release Yeshua verse 21 but they cried out saying crucify crucify him verse 22 and Pilate for the third time said now this should mean something he's telling them for the third time I have not found anything evil that he has done nothing guilty of death have I found in him I will punish him therefore and I will release him but this was not the outcome they insisted in a great voice seeking that he might be crucified and their voice prevailed it ought not be just because someone says it loud in a court doesn't and shouldn't influence the decision but Pontius Pilate he was so concerned for their support you know what we don't need a lot of support we just have to be on his side he will supply all of our needs we don't need to fret and worry get all worked up how is this going to happen you know what if it's not meant to be or if God says you know what I will allow you to fail in this you will lose that position your business whatever it might be you know what all those things are temporal and in the end a lot of these things they have no kingdom significance they're going to be here and gone they are going to be consumed with the judgment of God don't worry about those things that have no kingdom relevance so they cried out all the more they prevailed their voice the voice of the high priests verse 24 and Pilate he did something he gave judgment according to their requests and he set free to them the one and it's emphasized the one who was guilty of insurrection and murder having been and if we missed it the first time here it is again guilty of insurrection and murder and he was cast into prison ah I understand he was guilty of that against the Jewish leadership and not the Roman leadership now you can make a really well grounded theological presentation about Yeshua's ministry I mean because of Yeshua and his call why he was sent into this world you know who went free you know who found forgiveness you know who experienced at least a temporal Redemption Barabbas he was guilty but he didn't suffer the consequence of his guilt that's why Messiah came into the world that ultimately before God we are not going to suffer the eternal consequences of our sin that's his call to take what we have done which is wrong and make forgiveness bring about through his presence has worked his actions that we can and here's the word go free have Liberty but here again who's given this Liberty who's given this freedom Messiah what's another way to understand Messiah King you see this freedom and this Liberty is always subjected to the kingdom so this one who was cast into prison he came out there was a personal Exodus for Barabbas but according to their requests what they literally the word is demanded well in regard to Yeshua it says he gave in to their will not truth not what it write us not which is proper not which is just as he gave in to others will now let me conclude this session by saying this every time you have a decision you are going to do one of two things you are either going to give in to oooh someone´s will your will others will or you're going to do his will no position in between and let me tell you as you grow and mature as god uses you more and more you're gonna have more authority and more temptation to misuse that authority satan is looking the more spiritually mature you are the more you are a threat to what he wants to accomplish so when it says their will they were doing what pleased the enemy not what was pleasing to god so you have to ask yourself i need to ask myself daily whose will am i doing who's the greatest influence in my life what i want to accomplish what's important to me what i want to hold on to what makes me pleasing what pleases being this world or or all these things set aside and my life my decisions my passion is righteousness from his vantage point see you and i left to ourselves we can't stumble on what is right the only way that we know what righteousness is is that his word defines it so if you're not under his word you're not submitting to his authority if you're not saying above all things my desire is to walk in obedience to his purpose his truth his objectives what you're saying is enemy come and confuse me come and manipulate me use me for your purposes rather than for the righteous things of god and you know what it never changes i don't care if you're a teenager you're 30 50 70 80 years old we never escape temptation but I'll tell you this the more that you say no the more that you are committed you know what you can do you can discourage the enemy let me give an example then and then we'll close remember you sure when he was tempted in that wilderness after the third time what does 3 do confirm it documents something it documented that Yeshua's decision was going to be based because every temptation he responded by saying this is what the Word of God says this is how you apply truth of that situation what did Satan do he left him he left him this was at the beginning of the ministry but he said I'm gonna come back at a more opportune time and he came at the very end he came when the stakes were the highest at that moment of truth in the Garden of Gethsemane let me tell you we're all gonna have that garden experience and if we're not wise enough to understand the only way to overcome that temptation is on your knees praying seeking his power and anointing in your life realizing it's not about me all I have to do is lay my life down and we're gonna see when we lay our life down is gonna be God the Father that what picks this up he will never leave us or forsake us it doesn't matter what the enemy might do we have a sure hope that he is going to lift us up and if they destroy this body that's okay because we have a promise of a new body an eternal body a kingdom body one that's designed perfectly for eternity and the kingdom of God see when you're on God's side you can't lose you won't be defeated you might have a simile set back in the flesh but all that is going to be used for what future glory offered up to him [Music] [Music]
