i want you to hit me as hard as you can [Applause] he's a child star method actor comedian writer performance artist philosopher criminal rapper a meme and a paper bag shia labeouf is a brilliant yet flawed movie star who has lived a long interesting life even though he's still pretty young he was a promising disney star who made the transition from tv to big budget movies seem easy then something went wrong and shia became public enemy number one followed by a very public mental breakdown but his recent slew of interesting indie films has introduced a new side of shaya to the rest of the world but is this new shaya a good thing or a bad thing or just another stage in the wild ride that is shia labeouf's life so gather round children and let's discover what the [ __ ] happened to shia labeouf do it yes you can just do it but before we can truly understand what the [ __ ] happened to shia labeouf we must start at the beginning shia had a very troubled childhood for a time he lived in a motel and struggled with many things like his abusive father's drug problem who also suffered from ptsd and shia would tackle these demons later on with the film honeyboy and we'll get to that later don't worry world's first daredevil his big break came at the age of 14 with the disney channel original series even stevens he was now a disney channel star you'd see his face every time he had turned on the tv if you were a child and he did some funny stuff i loled and shia labeouf even won a daytime emmy for his performance shia was great as the wacky little brother who did wacky little things he was a scene stealer he stole every scene and left every scene messy usually the world fell in love with that goofball attitude and that curly hair and those huge nostrils look at those nostrils look at those things there was lots of ad-libbing and playing around just being silly all day on set even though his personal life wasn't exactly happy at that time but we had to wait for honeyboy to learn that and we'll get to that i promise after a few very successful years at even stevens he was ready to move on but still stay in the disney bubble while continuing to work with mickey mouse he starred in holes this was shia labeouf's first big test to see if he could lead a major motion picture this interesting film was based upon a popular children's book did you read it i tried i didn't finish it because they made a movie and i just watched that at this time shia labeouf who's being described as a young tom hanks meets dustin hoffman meets gene wilder that's a great compliment then there was dumb and dumber when harry met lloyd he got to improvise in this prequel so that's fun but it's horrible it's not good it's not good at all it's not it's not very funny luckily his role is small enough that this horrible movie didn't ruin his career because it could have it's that bad then he had some strong supporting roles in some big budget action movies like irobot and constantine will smith and keanu became his movie star mentors he then participated in project greenlight an hbo reality show by matt damon and ben affleck where they give some guy a chance to make his movie and that movie was the battle of shaker heights he took german lessons and learned to drive a stick shift for the film early signs of method acting i haven't seen it but i heard it's good i tried out and matt damon and ben affleck did not like my script because i i didn't finish it and i didn't send it to him he then played the greatest game ever played in the movie the greatest game ever played and apparently that game is golf he considers this golf movie a nice transitional film for him as a leading man now making adult movies well not not adult movies that's that's later in his career he watched a lot of golf films and said that most of them are fake and boring so he wanted to make sure that his swing was accurate unlike matt damon and that damn bagger vance then there was a guide to recognizing your saints it's the filmmaker's autobiographical tale and shia plays a young version of robert downey jr's character at first the director did not want shia because of all that disney channel's celebrity baggage he had absolutely no faith in shia's acting skills but after pleading for a second audition shia impressed everyone by punching a hole in the wall thus showing that this silly guy could channel some anger [ __ ] touch me please [ __ ] off him what the [ __ ] the matter with you then he joined the ensemble cast of bobby his character trips on lsd with ashton kutcher in the ambassador hotel the knight rfk is shot here's a fun fact this is shaya's first nude scene this film is directed by emilio estevez of all people and i haven't seen it since it came out but i remember every freaking scene feeling like a climax it's like so intense every character in every scene is having an emotional breakdown or an epiphany or just something major some reason to give a powerful monologue in its every single scene and most of the drama is not even related to the assassination of bobby kennedy it's just it's just i i don't know what to think of this movie this is either the best movie ever made or the worst movie ever made i i can't decide you decide comment your comment in the comments was a busy year for shia he lent his voice to the movie surfs up the animated penguin movie the one that's not happy feet and that same year he showed everyone that he could carry a major motion picture all by himself with the film disturbia produced by steven spielberg from director dj caruso it's a very loose remake of the hitchcock classic rear window except this time james stewart is shia labeouf and you know shia the method actor he did a lot of research for the role he spoke a great deal with real house arrest detainees he was cast in this teen thriller because steven spielberg's daughter was a big even stevens fan it's pretty good for what it is i like it he only had two days off between filming disturbia and his next project transformers a mega huge blockbuster that blew everyone's mind i guess i'm more of a beast wars guy but i remember the hype for this film was crazy and i was so happy and so proud to see shia take on a major action sci-fi adventure i was like michael bay plus robots divided by the square root of shia labeouf i like that equation and i hate math because i'm not good at it i was so excited for this film i thought it was going to be awesome and for the most part it was it's got its major flaws but overall it's great like shia labeouf he's got his major flaws but overall he's great [Music] most people only remember shaya just saying no over and over no no no no no i actually really like when shaya says no no no no it just it just makes me just makes me feel good and i love when that's referenced in honeyboy then joined another mega franchise produced by spielberg and directed this time indiana jones and the kingdom of the crystal skull it's pretty much the worst thing ever made and shia agrees i mean there's the fridge that cgi monkey with the 50 shya hair i mean it's awful and i love indiana jones i have dressed up as him on multiple halloweens so i really tried to like this movie i walked out of the theater saying to myself over and over it was good it was good it was good it was good it was good just lying to myself but no i cannot do such a thing i must be true to myself like shia labeouf has taught me it's a horrible movie horrible in every single way name a redeeming quality go you can't some people compare shia's mutt character to jar jar binks which i think is a little harsh but you know crystal skull marked the end of shia's relationship with spielberg he actually started some beef and dissed the legendary director saying that spielberg himself admitted that sometimes you gotta make films and sometimes you gotta sell cars shia was very disappointed at spielberg's selling out mindset he saw stephen as not being the true artist that shia believed him to be dissing steven spielberg can never be good for your career just saying i loved him in new york i love you this is one of those love story anthology films featuring many different films all set in the same city with the common theme of love shia shows off his range and skills and he puts on a believable accent and limp then came eacholi from director dj caruso again the disturbia dude this is another loose remake from another hitchcock classic north by northwest so filmmaker dj caruso really specializes in one particular thing loose hitchcock remake starring shia labeouf and eagle eye is pretty cool they say shaya did most of his own stunts the filmmakers worked closely with a retired government agent to get all the gizmos and gadgets right and while promoting the film shia accidentally exposed some fbi secrets like shia labeouf did it before edward snowden he told everyone the government spying on them and even jay leno was speechless that's right even jay leno you mean they had a record of you from two years prior to me joining the pitch even being associated with the movement with the movie well that seems extremely creepy wow yeah wow yeah all right all right well let's well let's wow that's that's pretty amazing it's pretty amazing i'm trying to think of what the last four phone calls that's what i'm saying he was arrested for criminal trespassing at a walgreens while he was drunk as f he was displaying some very strange behavior plus many other public intoxicated moments he even flipped his truck and fled the scene of an accident the dude got a dui and he injured his hand and this caused delays and transformers revenge of the fallen shia had fallen and everyone was feeling his drunken revenge he had become the new charlie sheen in more ways than one and starred in oliver stone's sequel wall street money never sleeps shia of course went full method for this one and it really paid off with actual money he earned his broker's license and started working with real-life wall street traders and turned a twenty thousand dollar investment into over four hundred thousand buckaroos but later some of shia's wall street buddies were arrested for illegal trading so there's that then there was another transformers movie called transformers dark of the moon what can i say about it that hasn't already been said it's it's it's a transformers movie shia labeouf is in it it's the third one then came a great bootlegger flick called lawless shia labeouf was intimidated by tom hardy but he respected his intense approach so shia stepped up his game a notch and started drinking real moonshine to get into character and he gained 40 pounds of course this heavy drinking caused shia to become aggressive and drove an actress to almost leave the film plus shia and tom hardy got into a fight on set with their fists there was so much macho ego on set and one of them was full of moonshine but the result was a decent film and shia does regret getting actually drunk on the film and admits that tom hardy staying sober resulted in a better performance sometimes you don't have to go full method sometimes you know you could just he could just act you know pretend and around this time shia was showing the world that he was not just an actor no no no no he was also a freestyle rapper and he was featured on five fingers of death he impressed sway who called him the number one mc in hollywood he was spitting those lyrics yo and even had some beef with soja boy but i mean who doesn't but for a little bit it almost seemed like shia was gonna become a name in hip-hop my life is like a highlight reel don't like me check twitter how the zeitgeist feel swaying shape 45 is what i just killed [Applause] in 2011 he directed maniac um filmed it's a short monumentary slasher film starring rappers kid cudi and cage as french-speaking serial killers it's a wee bit pretentious and it's kind of a copycat of man bites dog but it's still a worthy effort and you can see that shia has some skills behind the camera he also directed a kid cudi music video for the song marijuana where shia pretty much just films his rapper friends doing drugs in the red district he made a documentary documenting himself and some friends on a hitchhiking adventure he would tweet his coordinates his longitudes his latitudes and he would let anyone take him anywhere and he would film it then shia made a short film called howardcantour.com it premiered at cairns in 2012 and was widely praised everyone was talking about how shaya had a big future behind the camera but years later it was posted online and many noticed that it was a plagiarized adaptation from the ghost world graphic novel guy and once shia labeouf was caught plagiarizing he apologized by plagiarizing an apology from yahoo answers just a few years later shaya would quit what would be his broadway debut in the show orphans because he did not get along with alec baldwin but i mean who does and once again his apology was plagiarized this time he copied and pasted his apology from empire magazine next he did a film with robert redford the company you keep it's always nice to work with robert redford then he did a very interesting film called the necessary death of charlie countryman shia labeouf tripped on real drugs to get into character because his character was doing drugs and many people didn't enjoy this flick it was actually hated at cans but after some re-edits the cult of charlie countryman has significantly grown i thought it was great it's a wild trip with a clever story and shia really gets to show off his skills welcome to limbo charlie don't get too comfortable it's not your final destination i'll be alone soon enough to hang you there and in 2014 we almost lost shia labeouf forever because he tweeted that he was retiring from public life this was the beginning of the movement called hashtag i'm not famous anymore at the nympho maniac movie premiere he wore that lovely slogan on his face with a paper bag i'm not famous anymore ironically this made him more famous because everyone was talking about it but yeah nymphomaniac volume one and two shiloh buffs in it it's a porno that art house snobs like to watch yes the film actually features real actors doing real real sex things it's directed by madman lars von traer and mad men shia labeouf fits well into all the madness i've never seen this film because i don't think i'm allowed to but i hear from a reliable source that they study this film in psychology classes so that's an accomplishment and to audition that's in quotes audition for the role shia just sent lars von traer his own personal sex tapes i think it's fair to say that his days of disney were long gone like many child stars before him he took drastic and risky measures to distance himself from that even steven's image and while promoting this porno film shia appeared in a strange q a and walked out of the event he was quoting an athlete who was disgusted by the press following him around yes he was no longer an even steven he was more of an odd stephen and just when you thought he was done getting arrested no he got arrested again in savannah georgia for being drunk or something he went on what some would call a racially fueled rant towards the arresting officer who happens to be black shia started screaming about his million dollar lawyers it was just some straight up hollywood spoiled brat stuff just just awful he was also arrested for disorderly conduct at a cabaret performance in new york city after drinking lots of whiskey he spit on a cop in jail and his face was covered in what shy likes to call a hannibal lecter mask and they put him in a small cell for 12 hours time out think about what you've done shia i seriously cannot keep up with all of his bad boy antics he called himself the al capone of misdemeanors which is either the coolest or the lamest thing ever said i don't know and shia labeouf is facing five misdemeanor charges which include harassment and disorderly contact and there's the performance artist side of shia there was hashtag all my movies where he watched all of his movies and he cried during transformers and after all those hours and hours and hours and hours of watching his own films he learned to love himself again which i can actually relate to this artistic project because researching this video i had to watch all of shia labeouf's movies so i i i did this i can totally relate he did another art performance where he rode in an elevator for 24 hours and there was hashtag interview where he sat in silence with a gopro on his head then there was hashtag introductions aka the just do it green screen thing where shia labeouf gives a very motivational speech do it just do it then there was that sia music video where he's cage fighting a child or something and he was naked in another music video with all those symbolic butterflies and of course this fueled that mk ultra mind control conspiracy theory stuff about shia on the dark web do you believe it and we cannot forget that rob cantor theatrical performance where he sings about shia labeouf in his cannibalistic ways claiming that it's fiction but i i don't know like i just don't know anymore like what is real and what is fake he created an art exhibit called hashtag i'm sorry where he sat in a room with some items like a bull whip a bowl of chocolate some pliers jack daniels comic book from that author he plagiarized a transformers toy and more unusual items he also had that bag on his head because you know he's not famous anymore and shia labeouf sat in that room for five days crying it was an interesting statement on celebrity and the human condition it kind of seemed like a ritual sacrifice for his hollywood sins but you know art it's weird you gotta love it it's you hi shia in 2014 shia labeouf had a huge comeback with the world war ii film fury director david ayer told the actors that they would die on this movie and they would treat it like it was the last thing they would ever do in shia took the director literally actually listening to the director's direction he pulled a tooth he cut his face like really cut his face with a real knife because the makeup was not realistic enough for shia and he would open up his wound before every take really gruesome really crazy stuff and he lived on a military base for a month got baptized and pretty much actually became a christian because his character's a christian he took on his character's actual faith in addition to not bathing for months and he would watch videos of horses dying for hours to understand the character's pain he was method acting with his blood and his soul all these actors slept together in a tent not that slept they slept next to each other in a tent and they were encouraged to fist fight you know to bond for on-screen chemistry brad pitt said shia labeouf is one of the best actors that he's ever worked with fury it's a freaking great flick go watch it what are you doing he did the soldier thing again in man down this one is set in a post-apocalyptic united states of america critics called the film interesting but unbalanced once again shia threw himself into the role this time he played a soldier with ptsd so shia had to actually get there mentally and claims that he actually felt suicidal while making the film like i'm a fan of method actors i like it i respect it i think it's interesting but there there are lines and shia just keeps crossing them and rumor has it that man down is infamous for only selling one ticket in the uk so you could say that only one man was down to see man down i wonder who he was was it you then he did american honey i hear great things and it uses the 4x3 aspect ratio that a lot of indies are now experimenting with lately and at first i hated 4x3 but now i'm starting to love it and american honey uses it just right shaya delivers a great realistic performance and he's wonderful look at that actor acting these are the kind of films that really lit shia shine then there was borg versus mcenroe hollywood bad boy shia labeouf plays tennis bad boy john mcenroe many people like this film even those who don't like tennis and even people that don't like shia labeouf then came the election of donald j trump and like every actor in hollywood shia labeouf felt the need to scream his displeasure but of course he had to hashtag resist in only a way that shia could he installed a live feed camera and raised a flag with some of his revolutionary buddies and they screamed he will not divide us over and over and over again because vivela resistance this was shia's own special way of protesting trump you sure showed him shia but this resistance did not go exactly as planned shia's beloved feed was hijacked by what the internet describes as trolls in an epic game of capture the flag and photobombing and of course all this led to a police arrest of shia again charging him with a misdemeanor after assaulting a human and or troll at the live stream this dangerous art was ended for public safety concerns and i don't really care what your politics are but uh this was one of the most bizarre entertaining things that the world wide web had had ever seen and remember he he will he will not not not divide us then came the semi-autobiographical film honeyboy the film is divided in two halves one half takes place during his childhood in the even stevens era and this is where he plays his own father he's balding and he's got a belly and he's very very scary it's great you never know what this character's gonna do he he could be sweet or he he could snap with anger and then the other half is about shaya's young adult years dealing with his mental health shia wrote this gem of a movie as therapy while in a mental institution the film helped him in many ways professionally and personally it led to him rebuilding a relationship with his father who he hadn't spoken to in years and he rebuilt his career as a respected artist it was the perfect film for shia because the film is shia he never thought that he would actually make it into a film it was just an exercise to help him get things off his chest therapeutic at that time shia was actually convinced that his acting career was over and he was seriously looking into joining the peace corps he signed up and everything but shaya could not step away from the screen and took on the challenging role and since he hadn't spoken to his father in years it was kinda awkward to tell him about the movie especially the part about shaya playing his own father so shia lied and told his dad that mel gibson would be playing him and everybody's dad wants to be played by mel gibson huh i'll pump you full of strength cause we're on team and i know you got what it takes you're a [ __ ] star and i know it that's why i'm here i'm your cheerleader honey boy this is an incredible film it's original it takes a different look at holly weird the dark side of being a child actor one of the dark sides the film is about the tears of a clown the drama behind the comedy this film really shows you how hard it is to grow up in the spotlight and if you ever want to understand shia labeouf watch this movie and if you're an even stevens fan you gotta watch this movie too it's full of easter eggs and references to all of our favorite even steven's moments i never thought something so powerful so artsy fartsy would ever be associated with even stevens but honeyboy is and it's great the film was shot in just 19 days and received a standing ovation at sundance the people looked around they're like hey this was good enough to stand up for so they did and they clapped he won the breakthrough screenwriter award at the hollywood film awards and in his speech he thanked the cop who arrested him and changed his life this literally is a cinematic self-portrait like a painting because movies can be art too you know art [Applause] and that same year was the peanut butter falcon another great comeback film back to back comebacks and unfortunately this one was slightly overshadowed by honeyboy because that's how good shia is this is a wonderful film about a young man who has down syndrome running away to follow his dreams to become a professional wrestler shia labeouf said that working with and befriending actor zach gotsagan changed his life this film was shot in savannah georgia during the time of shaya's infamous arrest so shaya had to return to set after all that embarrassing stuff was out there everywhere and zack's non-judgmental attitude helped shia get through this embarrassing moment in his life and helped him get back on track and they started making the movie again so thanks zack [Music] i love this film it feels like something mark twain would have written if he was alive today cheyenne needs to keep making movies like this everybody needs to keep making movies like this actually this is shia's highest rated film on rotten tomatoes this peanut butter it's certified fresh i have a friend named leah and she summed up this film better than i could when i asked what she thought of the peanut butter falcon movie she said she loved it and that she had seen it multiple times and appreciated that the film was about independence i love this film and i love leah's review this independent film is about independence and if you have an independent spirit go watch it stop this video right now and watch it that this this right here is why god created the pause button then he teamed up with director david error again for the tax collector shia channels his inner hood rat and apparently shia labeouf is so convincing that a spokesperson from de hood says that de hood has officially claimed shia and now he has a hood pass to any hood and it's not easy to get a hood pass i wouldn't know in order to become this tax collector he really got tattoos all over his chest like those are real tattoos a real needle real ink real skin many critics aren't liking tax collector but regular folks like yous and me's seem to be enjoying it and shia seemed to really enjoy shooting this film and he fell in love with that side of town in la so much so that shaya started an acting school rec program for the community a shia labeouf artistic utopia society look at shia using his powers for good what have you heard victor i know you're the devil i might be i want to like him i really really do but then i think about that police cam footage but then i think about his comeback and then i think that shia deserves forgiveness i forgive you shaya because that's what your character and fury would have done shia has shown the drive and passion to become more than just a former child star he took on the most risky roles and completely bared his soul in every film and i respect that even if he had a few missteps along the way at least those missteps were interesting and that's how we learn and we can all learn something from shia love him or hate him you can't help but be fascinated by him as an artist as a celebrity as a human being he's one of the few actors out there who continues to challenge himself and the audience with every single role he takes shia does not need another big blockbuster franchise attached to his name no no no shaya is his own franchise and i cannot wait to see the next installment of the shia cinematic universe and see what it brings to the real universe the universe that that we're in right here it's been overwhelming yeah i'm i'm liking a it hasn't landed yet i'm still kind of levitating i've just been celebrating with my dad every day and full face time just giggling at each other like just stupid faces and my mother's super proud and i get to see my friends be on and yeah i'm just i'm very grateful mr labeouf seems to be in a very good place now with his family with his friends with his career with his art and with himself he claims to be on his ninth life and considers himself blessed just think at one time shia labeouf was the butt of every joke and now his name represents kicking butt with intense craziness in a good way shia labeouf broke that mk ultra-like hollywood spell that was taking him to an early grave and now he's free and independent just like the peanut butter falcon so after making it out alive from that vicious world of child stardom substance abuse and mental illness this american honey boy has transformed his career and his spirit into something truly incredible he's just a dude looking for some truth ain't we all and that's what the [ __ ] happened to shia labeouf [Applause] [Music] uh [Music] you
