on this episode of wrecked working on the side of roads and highways is a dangerous even deadly job think about where the tow truck operator is in relation to the highway a garbage trucks rear axles are destroyed and the O'Hair guys have to do some major surgery as the 25-ton beast dangles overhead at some point you have to take the calculated risk the guys in the shop feel the wrath of the big boss broke down tow trucks of worthless pieces in a flatbed loses its load right under some high voltage power lines Chicago has more than 20,000 miles of highway full of breakdowns spills and wrecks if somebody's got to clean it up bill runs O'Hare towing with his wife Marcy his brother Joey a fleet of high-tech trucks and a team of dedicated drivers who risk their lives every day ready to respond at a moment's notice to the next big it's morning rush-hour in Chicago and traffic is off to a bad start each winter snow ice and salt wreak havoc on Chicago roads creating potholes that could take down the biggest rigs in the middle of busy Lake Street a garbage truck is on the verge of tipping over the damage a wrecked rear axle hit a pothole so freaking hard blew out both his rear axles the truck is right-side up for now but its cargo is heavy and one wrong move could cause a huge disaster for Bill Graziano and his team garbage trucks are notoriously heavy and no one really knows what they weigh and they just keep filling them till they can't take anymore somewhere around 5060 thousand pounds but I don't know exactly and nor does the guy driving bills plan is to lift the 25 tonne garbage truck off of its broken axles and tow it away his kid brother Joey easily lifts up the back of the garbage truck with a 60 tonne boom but bill immediately notices the problem after we raised the garbage truck up we realized that the the axles weren't completely severed they were just twisted there's no way to safely tow the garbage truck with the axles still attached we get out on a job and you have a big mess and it's like where do you start well you know we're gonna eat that elephant one bite at a time the entire weight of the 25-ton truck hovers overhead but there's only one way to do this bill takes ak-12 chops off slides under the truck and saws away at the first axle so I had to get underneath there and cut the to mean pork arms I mean at some point you have to take the calculated risk one down one to go with both rear axles removed the weight of the truck rests on just two front tires with rush hour in its prime the pressure is on to get it done fast oh my god the sames a huge boat a certificate because because I think you think the sheer size and bulk of the garbage-truck make it an absolute bear to pull oh my truck doesn't like the same already if the truck tips over they'll be clean up rancid trash for hours oh my god because it's just so fake I'll just follow you Big Pig just follow oh you are fat nasty Pig and well sometimes you just got to talk dirty to it it's not going your way talk a little dirty to it they like it with another recovery under their belt girls off the o'hare crew heads back to the office the O'Hare headquarters is a cramped four acre site located next to O'Hare Airport in western Chicago this one facility houses storage dispatch and a repair shop get 302 running and get back over Ryan like right like right away bills in charge of the entire operation and he runs as 75 drivers hard bill bill on the outside everybody always says he's very intimidating you have so much time that you have time to read the newspaper I get tired of the adult daycare I get tired of drill men action like pages I take personal offense the guys walk around newspapers and even most of my daughter's don't act as much as the babies as some of the guys I got here bill is especially hard on his kid brother Joey Graziano Joey works double duty he's one of O'Hare's best heavy-duty operators and he's also in charge of running the O'Hare repair shop yesterday because we put air there for three times now we got the same problem we had yesterday all right get the tire off put Carl up pickup truck and get tire fixed that's the quickest fix right now Joey is my youngest brother I was a senior in high school when Joey was born and my father and I delivered him the dash is dead we're past that don't you realize that we're at wrong as being my brother and my mentor he's always on my ass especially on Friday his job is to keep tow trucks running we've done Joey's got a huge ego and I'm the guy to keep him on track Joey's trying to fix some of our fleet right now and he's having a little moment bill is on a power play what's wrong now trucks aren't getting out here as fast as he wants we're gonna turn the heat off now today if we can't get any smart answers give Monroe over here in his theory I'm the doors open your Bloods thinner you'll work faster it's a bad idea it's such a bad idea because we're just freezing our ass off underneath the trucks it's getting kind of late Joe we're gonna fix that truck today yeah it's gone doesn't look like it coming up we were a dazz yard dropping so now we look like a bunch of idiots Joey's behind in the shop and Bill's not cutting him any slack I gotta have it and a minor wreck can turn into a major disaster he's gotta be pumping off the diesel fuel and just before it's late it starts leaking all over the jar so now we look like a bunch of idiots is this close if you can't do it bill Graziano runs O'Hare towing with an iron fist kidding me today four trucks are down and it's up to Joey to get them back out on the road fast this trucks got to be making this morning tonight Joey's role in the shop right now is to keep tow trucks running we have a very unique relationship because sometimes it's father/son sometimes it's brother brother and sometimes it's boss an employee I'm trying to figure out what the truck number 308 the problem is and what the computer saying here is this got a fried ECU that's not good now that he's all cranked up I got to go in there and tell him we got to spend like four thousand dollars on a new ECU I'm spending more money so I'll get the truck fixed okay if you don't do something the way he wants to be done your life gets really hard my difficulty and that is I got a lot more to do than him all right over to 290 westbound 290 West but on an SUV sideswipes a tractor-trailer on a crowded highway damaging the fuel tank joey climbs into one of the only operational wreckers and hits the road he must containment leak quickly to avoid a full-blown hazmat operation versus a car trying to figure out where my closest service trucks are or if my secondary tow truck is I need help over the metal I got to get out there not to say I breathe on other people's misfortune but man I really need a good truck wreck right now to shut those lanes down driver's side of the tractors very very well damaged unable to turn lady broadside interface hard smile knocked me out of the drivers these don't feel Phil it's a minor leak but if the fuel tank ruptures anymore they'll have to stop all westbound traffic on i29 T is to determine how much fuel remains in the 40 gallon tank Joey calls in a heavy-duty Road service crew to help him haul away the fuel from the damaged tank not only does the fuel tank make this a dangerous job but Joey and his team are working just feet from cars speeding by one wrong move and the game could change fast working on the sides of roads and highways is a lethal occupation each year approximately 60 tow truck operators are killed in roadside accidents think about where the tow truck operator is in relation to the highway he's in a real bad spot and there's no other way to do the job other than to be in the bad spot this is real dangerous I'm actually in what's called a kill zone if something funny would have rerun this truck you can imagine with my hand in between this much deal working with heavy equipment in such a small area means these drivers risk their lives every time they step out of their truck and we're out there performing a service that necessarily doesn't have the respect to the motoring public they almost have become numb to the amber light so we've gotten some situations that are almost kind of doomed for failure I mean if something happens it's catastrophic I mean there's it's a fatality from from a guy just trying to total current or changing the tire or put them guessing that's it we get that little barrel loaded up we're out of here O'Hare's reputation is built on doing the best job in the shortest time possible if they sled they'll start losing toes to other companies officer gave me a deadline of 11:30 told me 12:00 I got to be out of here with the fuel tank empty Joey backs up to the wreck to reduce the time in the kill zone Joey uses a remote control to position the tow bar this is my remote power touch I don't have to run my controls I can look right underneath the truck and I can run he raises the semis front end with the wheel lifts after a quick chained down he's on his way and the scene is clear it's pretty excited when I first came out here I was like a 35,000 pound excavator lies on its side helpless in the middle of a busy intersection until Oh Ayers heavy-duty wreckers show up and Joey puts it into overdrive as he works to get O'Hare's fleet back in action and his big brother off his back he's about to get a right hook to the I excavator on its side westbound Warrenville Road all right right now we're on our way over to US route 53 we got a 35,000 pound excavator machine that's on the ground 310 just whizzed by me he's going the front way I'm coming up the backside I'm Mikey I'll see you up there a flatbed truck hauling an excavator lost its load the tied chains holding down the 17 top dirt hog snapped dumping the machine in the middle of a busy intersection the drivers not hurt but he's not happy - good morning bill is the first man on the scene Bill's plan is to use O'Hare's to heavy-duty trucks and position them on either side of the excavator then attach both boom extensions using one to lift and the other to catch once it's upright it'll take skill and precision the lift and then gently settle the 35 thousand pound construction vehicle onto a wide load transport Joey and heavy-duty Pro trike take his lead to create Sheamus bucket down it takes O'Hare's two biggest rigs to pick this one up the first challenge navigating the boom under nearby powerlines the slightest touch would send over 230,000 volts through anything making contact with the record including its operator we had power lines we were fighting we got underneath them got Billy telling me where to put it this way Phills team strap up the rig on two sides it's go time one rig pulls the excavator off the ground while the other gets ready to catch all 35,000 pounds once it's up the damage is clear the oil tank ruptured spilling oil all over the roadway creating a bigger headache for O'Hare they not only pick up wrecks any loss payload or spills are their responsibility as well the excavator is right-side up but the job is only half done fill in the crew reposition the chains so Joey's rig can lift the excavator onto a lowboy for towing Joey's rig makes lifting the 17 ton load look easy his boom could lift twice the weight with the excavator safely on O'Hair's lowboy and strapped securely down the team cleans up the oil spill and heads back to the airlock and this job is just different everyday different man that's what keeps you pumping future flood just keep going faster stronger more organized Joey heads back to O'Hare and a SHOP full of broken-down tow trucks they've been losing calls to competitors all day and bill a wares owner and operator is not happy about it in our business were only as good as our last home so you could have 20 years of doing a good job but you you screw up one time or you don't get there when you tell him to tell them you're gonna be there and I got the block D froze put this truck got in here got a new fuel filter on we got the block thought out think I'm gonna spin the wheel on this one she's done all right next one you got one truck out here get my loving brother a gay boss off my freaking back see if it driving me up the wall see the horses with the blinders so they could only watch what's in front of them I'm gonna get a pair for Joseph before this is all done cuz he gets to sidetrack maybe I should just put my hands on the side of his head and corral him that way here long time first ones done you can put the doors down there's no more o'hare trucks in here put that in your pipe and smoke it Billy all these trucks are up on my shift change we're all beat up from the last couple of days and we're going home Phil's off my back shift change is done thank God we're about to get a right hook to the eye up next a drunk driver crashes through a guardrail drivers in the hospital under us keeping bill and his crew out until 3:00 a.m. been clean up Chicago's highways since 8:00 a.m. from sawing two axles off a garbage truck to picking up a 17-ton excavator it's not 1:00 in the morning and bill is back at the office trying to finish up paperwork but not for long a drunk driver has crashed his SUV through a guardrail landing 20 feet down in a ravine when we got there we had a car that had missed the turn and crashed through some guardrail ended up in a drainage ditch the driver has already been rushed to the hospital with cuts and bruises before he gets carted off to jail on a DUI we had a little bit of a hard time because the vehicle is on its left side and it was pinned up against the cement embankment we opted to use a rotator to raise the vehicle and straighten it out so it wasn't sitting sideways bill attaches a recovery strap to the undercarriage of the SUV to keep it level and avoid causing any additional damage he maneuvers the rotating boom keeping the two lines in a triangular formation to balance the truck if the vehicle doesn't remain level it could tip or come loose from the rigging Steve holds a line tethered to the truck to keep it from spinning and bill makes short work of lifting the wreck out of the ditch bill sets the car on the solid ground so that the police can conclude their drunk driving investigation the hospital the rest didn't want to do some investigation and Steve winches it up onto the flatbed and hauls it off to the impound yard after an 18 hour day bill heads home to clean up and get ready for his next big call in a business that doesn't sleep there's no successful towing business that is a nine-to-five operation we all get to predict when our next major incidents gonna happen when the loose ball or a customer falls we go I'm always in a good mood until someone changes it so every morning I start out a good mood it's just sometimes I can carry it to about four o'clock in the afternoon but sometimes by 8:05 it goes real quick but right now I'm okay the cars are piling up over just like I said they're piling up me in a good mood now we're gonna be on a Friday when I got a crunch everything in at the end of the week we got to get all my bills up a good mood is not going to happen
