hey everybody welcome back to matthew kelly pottery i hope you are doing well today we're going to talk about some of the tests out of the gas kiln and yes that was a little john the potter influence there don't worry not going to change all my intros not trying to copy him but i thought it'd be funny anyway i i am going to make a full video of the unloading of the gas kiln uh but first i thought this morning i want to come out here and look at these tests again and i picked out like my six favorites so i'm just gonna do a short video today showing some of you some of you showing you some of my favorites from the gas kiln of the mako test glazes [Music] [Music] so first up is winter wood that you just saw the inside of at the very beginning winter wood with green tea and so you can see the winter wood down in there has those nice dark crystals that it uh it normally has but it did turn shiny and then there's also some light crystals down in there and then you can see kind of the colors that it uh it made with the green tea on the outside nice uh kind of a like it's a dark blue green color combination and all these tests i also sprayed my ash glaze lightly on the bottom just to finish them off in case i wanted to use them or sell them but you will see some of these tests have some little skips at the top because we were glazing these in a hurry we finished firing the wood kiln on saturday afternoon john and i both went took showers we came back here and we started glazing the pots because we wanted to fire the gas kiln on sunday so we can load it monday and then we unload that one on tuesday which was yesterday and now he's back in minnesota so either way we were kind of in a hurry so some several of these tests uh did skip like that but he said listen if they skip they're not always going to do that you just got to let the bottom layer dry more which i assumed because i even commented while we were glazing i'm like these look a little bit wet he's like yeah they may skip but he said we're just in a hurry so it'll be okay so anyway just keep that in mind number two not necessarily in any particular order other than the last one of course is my favorite this is winter wood on the inside as well and then this is norse blue over the winter wood and so you can see the i knew i was going to like norris blue i didn't know that i was going to like winter wood because um just not been a huge fan of what i've seen of it but i do like the way that looks i would almost uh venture to call that like a leopard or something like that the way that looks in there i do have a piece that just has winter wood on it you'll see that in the full video but winter wood with norse blue and that is uh that's pretty sweet i like it i was pretty sure also that i was going to like copper jade after seeing the test of the cone 10 version of that so i did my i have a strontium crystal magic which is stephen hills glaze the original one that he mixed for high temperature i use it quite often this one i put the strontium crystal magic on top first and then i put copper jade on the inside and on the outside probably down to like here so you can see how that those two glazes mix together i love to see that orange streaking into the red i'm not really sure how well this would sell because it's kind of a dark glaze but if i ever made pumpkins or anything for the fall that is like dynamite and i just love all the crystals that are in there i do like the two colors i'm just like i said not sure it would sell but hey maybe i'll make a few and put them up on an online restock and and see if they go all right one more with copper jade this one has sea salt on the inside and the rim and then copper jade dripped over that and this is the toss i do have my favorite over there but this one is a probably close second now this one skipped quite a bit you can see right there but if you look on the inside so that is sea salt and i don't know if you can see all the way to the bottom but the sea salt has some like really light colored crystals in it and then the way the uh copper jade drip down into the sea salt inside and out and then there's like these little copper crystals that like float in all this green and brown down in here and i'm like oh and the way it dripped like this down into where i put my uh my ash glaze i'm like that other than the skips that is dynamite exactly how it is and uh you will be seeing some of that from me uh very soon and like i said i did like norse blue i was pretty sure i was going to like it even before it got here it looked good in the wood kiln you'll see that later as well but this here is norse blue on the inside but first i dipped that same strontium glaze on the rim and i varied it with a paint brush and then i dipped the norse blue or lined the norse blue and then dipped it on the outside and i could just imagine seeing either the norse blue all the way down or a bit more of the norse blue on the outside and then see it transition to the ash glaze and or in on the inside and a bowl man and having those drips you see that like color that goes all down in there just having that on the inside of a bowl would just be like just delicious just amazing all right number six and definitely like i said last but not least because this is probably my favorite for a couple reasons the sheen and the color i've been wanting a green for quite a while in my gas kiln and i just haven't found one that i really liked also because copper in reduction sometimes goes red so i've tested greens before and then they go like mauve or pink or purple and i'm just like no i don't want another red i wanna i want a green so this was my uh the strontium glaze on the rim and then i dipped green tea on the inside and the out so that's what green tea looks like by itself down in there and then the sheen that this combination has right here is just amazing it looks matte finish but it has a really smooth texture and then it goes to super high gloss here and then i have the satin mat here of my ash glaze and just those three together on one piece it's like i got three sheens on one piece that's only like six and a half inches tall and i'm like and i could do even more of that like that like i could there's i have several ideas and just ways that i could layer that together and just to get like i said it's got two i mean just two tone or two sheen green and i know so there's some blue in there but still that is pretty amazing i love that combination and uh right now it's my favorite out of all the 27 28 tests that we did and the gas kiln that's my favorite but i i mean it's hard to pick but either way i'm excited to test more of these glazes from mako i'm excited to call them because there are more colors that they didn't send me that i want to order and test those in both of my kilns and uh yeah you'll be seeing more of of the gas kiln and the wood kiln stuff there's a ton of footage of that coming out soon from me and john there's live streams of the wood firing on my channel and one on john's channel as well so if you haven't seen those check those out and yeah so appreciate you
