this was a very difficult groom for me to do due to the severity of the neglect this dog has feces just encrusted in her coat and we found out that she has four- week old puppies at home and the owner wanted us to hurry and get her done so she could get back to her puppies uh it's the same owner that owns Sunny if you haven't seen that video I will link it above so the very first thing that I'm going to do is is use a tin and get started on her face just get a little dignity back for her so she can see so when you're grooming a matted dog you want to make sure that you're using a blade that is short enough to get under the mats and you're not pulling at the mats because that can be painful for the dog uh with these this group of dogs we cut them very short because they don't come in often enough and I know some people are going to ask why we don't report and the answer is if you haven't seen the sunny video please go watch it because we did try to report I actually ended up talking to five different agencies and they all basically refused to do anything uh there was a confusion about the owner living in a different County than where we work and they didn't know who had jurisdiction and then they said because the dog was brought in for grooming and the situation was made better that they couldn't do anything so it's not that we haven't tried to report these guys we have they just have refused to do anything and that's actually why I'm doing a voice over because this is just so maddening to me I I couldn't even speak I needed time to process and be able to talk about what I'm doing and talk about the groom um but this is the side of grooming that a lot of people don't see and this is a paid groom this is not a free groom that I'm doing here uh he brought in his other dogs or his other dog along with sunny and decided to bring this one in a couple weeks later after she had had her puppies again the puppies are 4 weeks old and it's just an unacceptable condition to for anyone to be having puppies with the condition that she's in the feces you know just caked on her coat it's unsanitary it's unclean it's just it's just not a good situation so I'm very carefully getting this hair off of the ears surprisingly her ears were not super dirty and then here I am just taking the loop off and going to trim around the neck there is a mat that came off behind the ear so now I'm I'm just going to finish trimming around her neck and so I can get her safely back on the loop uh there's a lot of people that misunderstand the loop or don't understand why we use it or why we have it so tight and so I wanted to talk about that real quick uh the dog has plenty of room to breathe we leave a two finger space in the loop and we have it tight because it helps prevent the dog from falling off the table it's especially useful for those dogs that are very difficult or want to spin around or just don't like grooming it helps us keep them safe with a small dog like this we have to have our table well I have my table at the highest setting and if this dog were to fall off the table it could potentially get severe head trauma or even die um so it's very important for us to use the loops properly and securely to keep the dog safe so the blade I'm using is a tin it is a very short blade uh we don't use this short of a blade very often we may use it on the backs of snowers and their heads but the main thing we use it on is sanitary trims and severely matted dogs this dog is not severely matted all over the coat but because this dog does not get groomed on a regular basis I have to think about what is best for the dog and just cut the dog short all over so it stays healthy for long enough uh before the next groom so here I'm just trimming the chest and the front leg you have to be really careful in that spot if your dog is matted in the armpit you want to make sure you're not using a seven in the armpit or the flap of the back leg cuz these areas have the highest risk for NYX and Cuts so being very gentle in that armpit area and that elbow is also an area that is pretty easy to Nick so if you're inexperienced I highly recommend you do not use a seven at all I would go use a five and use a 10 uh sevens can be pretty dangerous it's a pretty common blade we use but it definitely requires experience so I'm just going to trim around her feet her feet were pretty dirty her whole entire coat was pretty dirty um you'll see in the bath when we bathe her it is just she's she's pretty dirty for as short of a coat that she's going to have um her feet are actually supposed to be white and we have really Red Dirt here in Oklahoma and so that is why her feet look a brownish reddish color I always like to clean as I go so I'm constantly removing hair from the table so I don't have a big mess to work with it's also harder to see what you're working with if you have a whole bunch of hair all the hair on the table starts to blend in with the dog and then it's hard to see where you're actually working and what is what still needs to be worked on again this area in here is pretty matted just being very careful not to Nick her being very gentle all of these dogs dogs are super super sweet they are super duper sweet some of the sweetest dogs that we groom and it just it really makes us sad that they're in the situation that they are because they are so sweet I'm checking my blade to see if it's hot and it was so I ended up changing it so here I'm just going to continue on this front leg carefully there was some pretty significant matting on the inside just being very gentle with this sweet girl so you can see how white the coat is underneath that is the color that her coat is supposed to be compared to the orangish reddish color of the dirt this girl was very tolerant of the groom and was just overall a really decent dog to groom so now I'm just going to start on the side and get it cleaned up and then I'm going to move down a little bit to this stomach area where the nipples are for the puppies and we really want to make sure that we get that cleaned up I honestly have no idea how these puppies were eating because it was so nasty and matted down there um that nipple was a little deformed I was just trying to figure out what was going on and so after the bath we'll clean up the under belly a little bit better just just going to finish this back leg I left the feces en crusted hair for last because I wanted to keep my blade clean while I did the rest of the body all of my blades and everything I used on the preg Grom were sanitized after I used them I used something called Clipper side it's a 5 in1 disinfectant uh lubricates it oils it cools it's a very good product I use it on all of my blades in between every single dog to disinfect them making sure to disinfect them especially after dogs like this that have some hygiene um issues and problems so some matting on the inside of this leg here and then get her foot trimmed up she is so sweet I ended up just taking her off the loop because she just wanted to lay down I'm I'm sure she's enjoying the short break from her puppies during the groom I made sure to give her lots of love and lots of attention and Praises because I wasn't sure when the next time was going to be that she was going to be in here and so I just wanted to give her as much love and attention and praise that I could so now I'm going to finish this other leg going to start up top and then slowly work down being careful around those mats the legs were pretty matted um sometimes on other dogs I do have to go down to a 15 and maybe even a 30 anything 30 or below is a 30 40 and 50 blades are considered surgical blades and they are usually used only by vets but we do have them we used 30 blades on the paw pads to trim that hair out I have some 40 blades but I don't actually use them I find they cut the you know the skin in between the paw pads pretty easily so just cleaning up the bottom of her leg and being careful on that inside flap of that lower leg that's an area that can also be nicked pretty easily especially with a seven and we'll just get the rest of her foot cleaned up and then we'll get started on her rear uh this is probably the worst condition as far as sanitary tram that I've seen I mean it it's just unacceptable it's just unacceptable there is no reason that a dog should be this covered in feces I mean the poor girl literally just had puppies and is covered in feces it's just an unsanitary situation you know for any dog but especially to have puppies in and then for the puppies to be around that while they're eating it's just gross and so there was some feces caked around her anus so I will let that soak in the tub and then we will get it off in the bathtub so I'm just looking over make sure you know there's any places I need a trim just going to trim a little bit more on this inside of the leg and there's some m in there trying to get it off before the bath if you bathe a dog and they have mats it actually after they dry it it tightens the mats and makes it worse so here I'm just going to clean up this belly area a little bit better make sure it's 100% accessible for the puppies so usually on a dog like this if your dog is going to have puppies you would come in for what we call a maternity clip or a pregnancy clip to just clean up that area and really clean up the belly so all those nipples are exposed for the puppies and it's just hard for me to believe you know that they they didn't do that for her and I can tell that some of the nipples were not used probably because they were inaccessible because of the hair that was in the way so here I'm just doing some last minute cutting and then it will will be time to get her in the bathtub so during this groom I always wanted to give her praise and attention and just love on her because honestly we don't know how much of that she gets at home so the next thing I'm going to do is do the nails and I am using a Dremel the reason I use a Dremel is for two reasons mainly it rounds the nail so it's not Sharp the nail clippers tend to leave a pretty sharp edge that is more likely to scratch you or cut you especially if your dog likes to jump on you and it also gets closer to the quick it allows us to get closer to the quick so it helps recede that quick and we don't have really really long long Quicks so if your dog has really long Quicks you can ask your groomer or get a Dremel yourself I use the Dremel light you can find it on Amazon it is linked down below it just when you first start you want to go really slow I know I make it really you know look really really easy but it took me a long time to get comfortable with using the Dremel when I first started I was still terrified of trimming dog nails so whether you're using nail clippers or the Dremel you want to take it nice and slow and it's just going to take you some time to get used to the nail trimmings uh like I said when I first started I was absolutely terrified to trim the nails and I started with the Clippers and I have just found that the Dremel is a lot easier to use you can do one look do one look um some dogs don't like it though and there are some dogs that come in that we're not we're we're not able to use the Dremel and one thing with the Dremel that you want to remember is you want to do a stroke and then take a short pause do a stroke take a short pause you can see I'm doing it here and that's because when the Dremel is you know going around so fast it does create heat so you don't want to just leave it on the dog's nail you want to do you know stroke pause stroke paw stroke pause and you can tell when a dog does not like it or when it's getting hot uh um they'll let you know going to stop here and give her some more praise I of course need to stop and give her some more praise and love and attention and then the next thing we're going to do is the paw pads so I have a 30 blade on my clippers she was not very fond of this so I ended up just doing a little bit and doing the rest after the bath it's very important to do the paw pads one it prevents mats from forming which she had a few of in between her paws and then it also increases traction allows them to you know have better grip on hard slippery surfaces so I'm just checking the ears they surprisingly were not that bad give her some more love and attention and then we're going to head over to the bath there is no telling when the next time she's going to be bathed is so I'm going to do a very very thorough bath for her uh in this video I'm using the car wash nozzle it can be found Down Below in the description box we absolutely love it you just put the shampoo in the little Cup right now I'm just getting her wet but then you just turn the dial and it injects water into it and you have clean soapy water it's a lot lot less expensive option for a bathing system if you don't have the funds to be able to afford a true bathing system it works excellent in our little baby tub so today I'm using the some blackening shampoo which we don't buy shampoo for those qualities we just like the scent of it and then I dumped some it's a facial cleaner by lilan Ruff everything in this video can be found down below we love it it's tear-free and I'm just giving her a little extra scrub because I know it's been a long time since she was last groomed or bathed really want to focus on those feet and get all that dirt out so we can trim those paw pads after the bath so we have red clay here in Oklahoma it's really red hard dirt and it tends to like to stick to the actual nails so that's why I'm really getting in there and scrubbing and then working on the hair in between the paw pads and so one thing I want to talk about is it is very important to dilute your shampoo before you bathe your dog you can see that we dilute it in the car wash you know bathing system here it's also diluted in the 1 gallon container and that is because it goes goes on easier and it's easier to scrub the dog but it's also a heck of a lot easier to rinse out and a lot of people don't know this but dog shampoo is actually supposed to be diluted uh you're not supposed to put it on full strength it may not even say that on the back of the bottle but we recommend with bathing you want to get the dog completely 100% saturated with water first then you want to apply the diluted shampoo so in the bottom of the tub you can see how much dirt actually came off of this dog and this coat is not very long it is not long at all so here I'm just doing another once over on her you can see how white those feet are after I scrubbed those so just getting that U potty area soaking and just look looking at what is still left back there I'm going to let it soak a minute and then I am going to grab my little flea comb and we're going to do the eyes first so we're not going from anus to face and then we'll go from face to anus that's one thing you always want to talk or think about with your tools is what order you need to go in to keep it clean and hygienic so I'm being very careful and just getting all that feces off of her rear make sure she is 100% clean and then I will move on to the anal glands so I actually did not charge the owner full price for this dog usually Doodles are about 25% more than the other non doodle breeds and it's because of situations like this the Doodles come in they're matted they have to be shaved down they're unruly they haven't been TR trained and so that's why we charge more for the Doodles so I'm just going to do the anal glands and then after you do the anal glands you really want to make sure that you are washing that area with soap it is very stinky oily substance that comes out so here I'm just going to do one more once over with the shampoo usually I wouldn't do this much on a different dog but honestly I have no idea when the last time this dog was groomed and then I'm going to switch it to rinse I'm going to rinse myself off first and rinse down the tub and then rinse her down and with soap you want to make sure that you get all of the soap off if you don't it can cause skin irritation it can make the coat look oily and like you didn't bathe the dog it can also leave hot spots which are super itchy and you really don't want that so once she is dry I will see you back at the The Grooming table and we will get her all finished and ready to go home I'm going to give her some more deserved attention do not get enough because she has been an absolute start today and is the sweetest thing ever so now I'm going to get her finished just going to do the paw pads I'm using a 30 blade she definitely did not like me doing her paw pads but it definitely has to be done to prevent matting again it is to help prevent matting from in between the paw pads which I compare to us walking with shoes on with a rock in our shoes it's uncomfortable and can sometimes be painful and it also increases traction on slippery surfaces such as sealed concrete hardwood floors tile if you've ever seen a dog and they're just slipping and sliding they usually have a bunch of hair on the bottom of their foot so you just want to be really careful it's best if you do the paw pads after you trim the nails sometimes the nail gets in the way of the blade and you can't get down as close as you need to situations like this really suck they suck because it puts us in a position where we feel powerless we can't do anything I legally can't keep this dog Animal Welfare won't do anything and it just it sucks and again that's why I'm doing a voiceover because it just sucks I was so mad and pissed off this day I just it was maddening I couldn't even talk and the fact that we have animal welfare and animal control and they won't do anything about this situation it's frustrating and we're like why the heck do we even have animal control and Animal Welfare if you're not going to do a damn thing when dogs like this come in and they're it's pure neglect like I even have video evidence of it and they're not doing anything it just doesn't make sense and the sad thing is that there are dogs in worse condition than this and they're not doing anything about it and this is not a rare occasion here we have dogs that come in all the time that are matted to the skin just the their coat is just pelted it comes off in one sheet and a lot of the times this is because the either the breeder has not trained the owner how to properly brush a dog or the owner just doesn't know how to properly brush a dog so Rose and I with the help of our friend Edgar um hopefully we can get a video made and post it on Facebook and send it and post it here and just show people the basics of how to care for a dog um when you brush a dog you got to brush down to the skin and we 100% recommend a long pin Slicker brush and a fine Toth metal comb and those are the basics that you need besides like nail clippers or a Dremel and um we recently had a poodle come in and she was like yeah I've brushed the dog and I have a Slicker brush and I have a fine- tooth metal comb and she just didn't know how to properly brush the dog and we can't blame the owner for that it's just like children if you haven't shown them how to do something and you say hey go do this and they don't know how to do it they're not going to be able to do it um so we properly showed that that owner how to brush but the dog had to be shaved down because it was just completely pelted and we also told her you know hey this dog hasn't been in for 4 months you need to come in every four to 6 weeks you know it's been four months you can't go that long on a doodle poodle you know it's just not going to happen so I'm going to get this girl finished she is just an absolute doll and is so so sweet just trimming around the neck um the reason we do the groom is usually I would you know like brush out the dog do the basics the nails the ears the sanitary trim that type of thing and then bathe them and I wouldn't cut the coat um the only time I cut the coat before the bath is if they're matted or their coat like this dog um this dog had both but um the coat was really long much longer than it was going to be in the final groom so I went ahead and cut it uh that say saves on product shampoo conditioner it saves time uh drying and it also saves resources it saves water and so that's why I'm doing a final groom if you just cut a dog down and bathe it it's going to look very choppy it's not going to be finished once that dog is bathed and the hair is clean the hair fluffs up it separates and it just looks better especially if you dry them with a high velocity dryer it really fluffs that hair up and separates it and it just gives a really really nice finishing look on the final groom so when you're doing the ears if you are new to this uh if you're just starting I recommend not even using a blade on the ears unless you absolutely have to on the bottom side of the ears right here where I'm at there is a flap of skin that is extremely easy to Nick if you don't use the blade at the right angle and once you cut an ear it bleeds and bleeds and bleeds and it doesn't stop we do have Quick Stop and I've also heard of people using super glue I know it sounds crazy but it works um I personally don't use it uh but I use Quick Stop it stops the bleeding it's it's a clotter and so yeah you want to be very careful on those ears just going to finish her feet just trimming up any hair that is left there's a long piece of hair that I missed I am very particular with my Grooms I know there's some other groomers that don't follow the pattern I do or aren't as particular as I am I have a very specific order that I go in and I also like to look at all the tiny details and it does tend to take me longer to groom the dogs than other groomers but that's because I slow down and I think about what the dog needs what cut is going to be best for the owner there's lots of variables that go into grooming we don't always know what the cut is going to be until we get in there and it's hard for non-g groomers to understand that because a lot of other work there's a set way of doing it and with grooming it's an art it's a legit art um every single dog that comes in it's not going to be the same every single time because the dog may need something different the next time or the owner May request something different hey can you trim the beard a little bit shorter or I want soand so left a little bit longer or we may have to cut a mat out and it's different so every single time a dog comes in it's not going to be the same it's a form of Art and there's not a set way of grooming just like there's not a set way of painting a painting um you have to find what works best for you and it and it's an art it's it's every groomer is going to groom differently we're taught by different people we learn different techniques there's not one way to groom not one way is wrong and the other way is right it just depends on that specific groomer and that's why sometimes some groomers work better for other people than a different groomer or some groomers work better for one dog but the other groomer over here did didn't work very well for this dog so there's a lot of variables that go into grooming when you're trimming the ears like I am here I'm using my fingers as a guide so if I do cut something it's actually going to be my fingers and not the dog's ear again if you cut a dog's ear it's going to bleed and bleed and bleed and you know I'd rather people cut their ears a little bit longer than risk injury so here I'm cleaning out the other ear this is um ear powder it helps us grip the hair because it's usually covered in ear wax and it makes it less painful for the dog because we can actually grip it and we're not pulling and it's slipping and then we have to redo it so her ears were not very bad at all today going to trim up her feet there are many many many ways to trim the feet on dogs like this where we shave them down we just have to do what looks best and sometimes they don't look the best because they're supposed to be a little more fluffy these feet ended up turning out okay uh usually I mean they they call this dog an Aussie this is definitely not an Australian Shepherd it's more of a poodle or poodle cross and so yeah usually we would do clean feet just going to clean it up and make it look better and then I am just going to finish some spots here I always do a once over and just s look and see oh is there any place that I missed and so here I'm going to trim this belly up a little bit better make sure all this hair is off for the pups there was some hair that was quite long when we were bathing her I made sure to really wash these teets and get them very clean so they were hygienic for the puppies there's just one more spot on her belly to trim and then we will find her a bandana and get it on her and she'll be ready to go home and I know it's an unfortunate situation I don't want her to go home and I know you don't want her to go home but legally we have no right to keep her and so I do have to send her back home here's the before video I know a lot of you have been enjoying the before and after I've been trying to film it so it's a lot easier for you to see the before and after and so here she is she's so pretty and do one squirt of some doggy cologne and she'll be ready to go home
