the worst cars of the80s from Chrysler even with leak coka joining Chrysler in mid of 1978 there are some pretty awful designs workmanship and just Flatout flaws with some of these cars of this decade based on the sound of my voice you can infer I was not born in the'80s but don't let that discourage you from watching I spend a lot of time doing research for my videos and I use a lot of different platforms to gain this understanding including the comments from all I asked for 500 likes for a Chrysler dedicated video and we were able to absolutely Crush that goal we covered GM and today's video we are featuring Chrysler we are missing one more of the big three and I will ask again let's set a goal to reach this time 1,000 likes for the worst 80s cars from Ford fifth gen Dodge Charger which was produced from 1982 until 1987 utilizing Chrysler's lbody most people are famili amiliar with the first through third generation charger the fourth is a bit unusual and shortlived as it would be replaced by the Magnum just after a few years it transitioned from being that muscle car to more of a personal luxury vehicle I don't it's a little strange change we made you love the change we made announcing the all new luxurious Dodge Charger special edition 75 you love [Music] change well after a four-year Hiatus the charger name was back except it was now a subcompact Coupe it was front-wheel drive and before it returned as its own separate model it was a trim package in 1979 Chrysler brought sporty versions to the elb body Omni and Horizon these versions were called the Dodge Omni 024 and Plymouth Horizon TC3 they didn't sell all that well and so for 1981 they brought back the Char charger name this was a performance package for the Dodge Omni it was addressed as the charger 2.2 for an extra $400 this special performance package as Chrysler called it included a hood scoop rear spoiler charger 2.2 Graphics as well as the brand new 2.2 L from Volkswagen good for 84 horsepower these are pretty rare to come across as less than 8,000 units were ever produced I think finding one nowadays is next to Impossible one year later the charger was now its own separate model yet again remember when the 426 Hemi made Dodge Charger Legend today that Legend lives again in Dodge Charger 2.2 and the TC3 name was discontinued and replaced with the Turismo name but as I said earlier they were now front-wheel drive a compact Coupe and were only offered with four cylinders quite the difference from the prior Generations obviously this was during a time when manufacturers were struggling to make Power were all while meeting government regulations and being fuel efficient however Chrysler was still making mbody cars during this time and those had V8s and were also a rear wheel drive also during this time there was the Dodge Daytona or if you wanted more class there was the Chrysler Laser yeah the charger was cheaper at the time but the Daytona was the one you wanted it was definitely more cool the first result of a renewed relationship between Carol Shelby and leak coka was the Dodge Shelby charger fast forward a couple years to 1987 and an even more desired charger was introduced the glhs these are both really interesting additions that have to be saved for a different video for 1984 the Chargers now had quad headlights which really helped differentiate the charger from its Omni Origins there was also the Turismo 2.2 version that made 110 horsepower paired with a 5-speed manual also the Turismo duster a trim below the 2.2 made 96 horsepower so both of these trims use the same engine just the Turismo 2.2 had a revised cam shaft and the block was decked to increase the compression ratio I will say the Plymouth variants didn't get any like special Shelby treatment as the Chargers did so the fifth generation charger was designed and engineered by the European Chrysler division which makes sense as it was derived from the Omni the first two years were pretty bad in regards to sales numbers however mid production models did fairly well with over 50,000 units sold a lot of these Chargers were junked and sold for scrap as the build quality was not the best on them regular varant were very underpowered and their design doesn't really hold up in today's time the Chrysler Imperial from 1981 until 1983 although Chrysler was facing bankruptcy aak coka argued that a new flagship would assure the public that Chrysler has a future if we go back a little more than a decade when aokoka was with with Ford he came up with a design of the Mark III which was a hit the same cannot be said for the Imperial if I'm honest and as many of you would agree this is a beautiful car from when it was released up until today I mean this was Chrysler's most expensive car at the time even more than most of the Cadillacs and Lincoln's offered and it was intended to compete with the El Dorado and Mark 6 Frank Sinatra was actually convinced by Lea coka to sponsor the Imperial and they ended end up having a special addition to honor this agreement I won't go over all the unique features and differences because I'm actually in the process of creating a Chrysler Limited Edition video and this is definitely a unique one for the first couple months buyers were happy until later that year people started facing problems the 318 is a great motor while it's not super powerful it was pretty reliable I mean of course it had some control system issues with its lean burn technology but apart from that it was a true Workhorse the same Engineers who designed space shuttle technology I mean probably the most advanced you can get designed a new electronically fueld injected system for the 318 I'm in no way calling any of these Engineers stupid just it's crazy how much of a failure this new system was the Imperial was the first Chrysler to use this new electronic fuel injection system and this was a big deal at the time I mean these systems took years to develop many tests were conducted in proved it was a sound system aokoka himself was so sure that it would work and the electronics in these cars were so Advanced they were actually the first to have a digital gauge cluster and the Interiors were super luxurious it had all the features you could ask for in 81 unfortunately the one thing it needed to do it couldn't and that was to Simply run and drive one of the biggest problems with these motors was the electric sensors more specifically the motor had this shut down module and if it sensed certain issues it would turn off the engine entirely these Imperials would stall out all the time and if you were spending this amount of money this should not happen people were bringing these back to the dealers demanding to trade them in people hated them and so Chrysler panicked rightfully so I mean you have this Flagship Malay era coupe with a Rolls-Royce sty Grill and the stupid thing can't even run so Chrysler recalled them and offered to convert them to carb ated for free but it wasn't this simple conversion dealer converted Imperials had different fuel tanks different fuel tank pumps revised instrument cluster a whole bunch of different parts and so this carburated retrofit cost Chrysler around $3500 per kit which is an insane amount of money also dealer installed kits featured a unique lit up LCD display to indicate the conversion had been carried out by Chrysler and not some Backstreet garage less than 13 ,000 of these rolled off the assembly line honestly it is a true shame that these things were not successful second gen Dodge Challenger similar to the charger previously mentioned in that these Challengers stacked nowhere near to the Beloved Originals I mean it's crazy to see some of these cars go for more than a half a million doar anyway even worse for the Challenger compared to the charger these were captive Imports if you aren't too familiar with that term all it means is a car is formb built and sold by a domestic automaker originally when these cars were first introduced in 1978 they were referred to as the Dodge CT Challenger the Dodge CT was another example of a captive import during this time fast forward to 1981 they were just now called the Dodge Challenger these second gens were now underpowered sub compact cars a drastic change from what they used to be and you know there was a lot going on during this time new emission laws Imports were taking over people really wanted fuel efficient cars just if you ask me they should have given it an entirely different name I will say though and this shocked me too these cars were rear wheel drive two engines were offered a 1.6 L making 77 horsepower and a 2.6 L branded as a Hemi yeah you heard me right it was branded as a Hemi which is completely foul that made 105 horsepower instead of being powered by one of the largest engines available in a car at the time these Challengers now had one of the smallest engines and I'm not saying these motors were unreliable but they were nothing to write home about of course Plymouth had its own version as the saparo and these are definitely a lot more rare than the Challenger these cars didn't last long especially under the new redesign and name for 1981 as they stopped production a few years later in ' 83 Chrysler had an international license for these cars obviously this was definitely cheaper than designing and building building their own and it's actually interesting to see Chrysler in mitubishi already collaborating Diamond Star Motors was not yet established that wouldn't be for another 2 years looking at this bar graph of production sales numbers for the Challenger across its entire life do you happen to notice something off this Source didn't even bother to include the second generation Challenger for 1981 around 27,000 units were sold 24,4 82 and for its final year less than a th000 sold these production numbers include the saporo as well two cars combined couldn't even get 30,000 sales the second generation Dodge Challenger is definitely forgettable to most and that's for a reason in today's world most of us would certainly point it out if we saw one however in its Heyday these Challengers were definitely disappointing to a lot of enthusiasts just kind of like how a lot of cars are nowadays two honorable mentions go to the arbody platform which I made an entire video for and the TC by Maserati the TC was introduced in 19 1989 and ran from 91 and just didn't seem right to include it in this video nevertheless though that thing is a complete pile our body cars not so much they were just introduced during the worst time our last entry goes to the Dodge Rampage in Plymouth Scamp so like the charger these shared that same lbody platform it used the unibody construction along with many front-end components from the charger based on the looks of these trucks it's quite noticeable that they were based on a traditional car just with a versatile bed it's a car it's a truck it drives like a car it huls like a truck it's Rampage America's first sports pickup and this wasn't completely out of the ordinary you know during this time there was also the Volkswagen Rabbit truck and Subaru Brat in terms of load capacity the Rampage was very competitive compared to the El Camino a little more than a 100 lb difference in a truck that weighed significantly less under the hood was the 2.2 L 4 cylinder that made anywhere from 84 to 99 horsepower it all really depends on the year and these trucks came standard with a four-speed manual or a 3-speed automatic initially in 1983 again Plymouth had their own version which was called the Scamp and if you got a Scamp GT well they came standard with a 5-speed manual along with some unique Graphics just like how the charger got a facelift in 84 so did the Rampage and Scamp now they featured that quad headlight design along with a newly styled Grill people like small work trucks and those people were not picking these trucks and I think mainly why that is is because they weren't super versatile because of that bed not to mention the interior was super cramped as well if you had a heavy load in this truck then the truck was likely to over steer and lose traction so all of these flaws really pinpoint this truck's Achilles heel however they were affordable and that's definitely a huge plus base MSRP was around 75 $100 although the ranger which came out in ' 83 was slightly cheaper and more usable speaking of the Ranger the car style trucks were phasing out in favor of those regular compact trucks the ranger the Dakota and of course the S10s were becoming super popular and the Rampage and Scamp could not compete I'm positive a few of you had some of these cars when you were growing up or had a buddy that had one I generally don't think these cars are complete crap and I don't want anyone to feel disrespect Ed with this video I had fun doing research and learning about these cars so please don't take any you know personal offense it is now time for the tier list this is when I rank each car from basically worst to best and with that said we actually have nothing in F tier in D tier we have the Chrysler Imperial non-converted the one thing the car needed to do it couldn't and that's why I got to put it in D along with the second gen Dodge Challenger in C tier we have the fifth gen charger and on that same elbow body we're going to have the Rampage in Scamp and I'm actually going to do like a little bit of a bonus here I'm going to put the Imperial converted in B tier I mean it's just such a beautiful car you know to put it in D is really disrespectful but if it's converted I think B is fair I don't think it's s obviously you could argue it's a but I'm going to put it in B and with that thank you guys so much for watching I mean the amount of support has been crazy we've gotten so many new members in this community stay tuned for next week for another video at Saturday at 1:00 [Music] p.m.
