[Music] hey guys today we're going to do a project where we are going to look at different ways you can slip your stitches on the end of your knitting to give your piece a nice rounded edge or a nice square edge and I'll show you a couple of examples of these that I've knitted but we're going to look at right now for the next probably 10 rows or so we're gonna slip the first stitch of every row and we're gonna take a look and see what that looks like I'm just gonna do a garter stitch so I'm going to knit every row I've got about 15 or 16 stitches on my needles and I've knit one row so now I'm going to slip the first stitch of every row and in order to do that I'm gonna go into the stitch as if to purl so my yarn is in front I go into the stitch as if to purl but instead of purling I'm just gonna slip the stitch off the left needle then I'm going to bring my yarn to the back and now I'm going to knit the rest of the row so I only took that first stitch off purl wise and then I knit to the end and we're gonna do that for several rows and you're gonna start to see a very nice edge stitch start to appear you can put slip stitch edges on them on most of your knitting and usually a pattern will tell you if it's added stitches for the slip stitch edge if it hasn't then you just add two stitches to whatever pattern you're following and you just will use those two stitches one on either end as your slip stitch and then on the stitches in between you would work your pattern so I'm going to again slip this first stitch we aren't in front go into the stitches if to purl and then just pull it off bring my yarn back to the back and then continue knitting I use this slip stitch edge especially on things like scarves where you don't want a ragged edge to show I wouldn't use it so much on sweaters where I'm joining two pieces of knitting together because it does sometimes leave a bit of a gap so I will use this method when I have a piece of knitting where you're gonna be able to see the edge and in a sweater you're gonna be knitting edges together so you would never see them so again I'm going to slip the first stitch purlwise yarn in front slip the stitch bring the yarn to the back and then knit and after we do about 10 rows or so of this then we're going to switch it up and we're going to slip the last stitch of every row rather than the first stitch of every row just for something different so I've slipped the first stitch of several rows and I keep doing that yarn in front go into the stitch as if to purl slide it off bring the yarn to the back and then knit now I'm going to go ahead and speed up the video and I'm going to work four or five more rows and then we'll stop and we'll take a look at the edges and see how they're starting to turn out you okay I've knit several rows here slipping just the first stitch and I want you to see what the what the edges look like you can see a nice little row of these from all those slip stitches gives a nice square look not a jagged edge and both sides look very nice you can see here on this side - there's a nice row of these so slipping the stitches the slipping the first stitch of every row and then knitting the rest does leave for a nice edge so now I'm going to switch it up a little bit and I'm gonna hang a little stitch marker on my knitting so you can see the difference we're gonna hang a stitch marker on and then we're going to knit several rows just like we just did but this time we're going to only slip the last stitch rather than the first stitch so this first row once I get going this first row is going to look a little funky on the edge because usually I'd slip this stitch and now I'm going to work it so I am now going to knit the first stitch and we're going to slip the last stitch instead and I'll use this variation on some patterns some patterns just clearly you need to work that first stitch in order for the pattern to work sometimes you're working a pattern where it really doesn't make any difference so whichever way you decide to slip the first stitch or the last just make sure you do it consistently so now I'm down to the last stitch I'm going to bring my yarn forward as if to purl then I'm going to go into the stitch as if to purl and pull it off my needle so I got my yarn in front and then I have the last stitch I turn my work and now I'm going to knit this first stitch and then I'm going to go ahead and knit to that last stitch and slip it so we've just swapped over from slipping the first stitch of every row and now we're going to slip the last stitch of every row get to this last stitch bring my yarn forward go into the stitch as if to purl slip it off then turn my work I'm going to go ahead and work the first stitch knit to that last stitch and do it again get to the last stitch bring my yarn forward as if to purl go into the stitch as if to purl pull it off turn my work knit back I'm going to go ahead and speed up the video get a few more rows done and then we'll go ahead and take a look at the edge and see what we got you okay we're gonna stop here more and take a look here you can see the the row where I switched from doing the slips on the first stitch to the slips on the last you're going to see a little bump there because we had to work a stitch we would normally slip so other than that one little place you can see by now we are slipping the last stitch of every row I'm still not getting a very nice set of these right here on the edge it looks just as nice as the bottom part you can't really tell the difference and if you look at this end you can't really tell the difference so whether you slip the first stitch consistently or slip the last stitch consistently it really makes no difference just doing it always on the same end consistent you will get a nice square edge [Music] so I hope this has helped learn something new please leave me a comment down below in the comment section if you have any questions or if you'd like to see something on a video please leave that in the comment section below as well I do appreciate your feedback if you're interested in stitch markers I have to do a little plug I do have an Etsy shop where I sell lots of different kinds of stitch markers and you can buy them at my Etsy shop and I'll have a link to my shop in the description below thanks guys for watching it was great to see you again I'll see you next time bite
