[Music] today's question comes from Stephanie 3896 and it's actually more of a comment she commented on my video how to move to Europe four ways to do it watch it for context and her comment is the problem is most U.S employers don't allow us to work abroad and this is true if you're a remote worker in the U.S it's pretty likely that your employer will not let you take your job abroad there are usually Geographic or time zone restrictions that come with your role and this is for good reason so for employers there's many factors that they have to take into consideration when it comes to full-time employees working abroad remotely and that's going to be everything from work permission and visas compliance when it comes to tax and labor laws time zones productivity and also employee well-being but don't worry there are ways around this so let's take a look at how you can take your remote job abroad so before we even jump into your role you need to First understand can you even work remotely from another country so that means do you have the legal right to even be in that country for an extended amount of time so for U.S citizens you can typically travel visa-free for up to 90 days in most countries around the world but if you want to stay longer you're going to have to get a Visa that lets you do so and not all countries have visas that will allow you to work remotely from their country now when it comes to your current employer what can you do to overcome these work from anywhere obstacles now if you're one of the lucky few out there your company might have a work from anywhere policy and that means they don't have any restrictions on where you can work meaning you can take your remote work anywhere you want to in the world for as long as you would like now there aren't that many companies out there that have these kind of policies but I actually have a video that covers 14 that do so be sure to check it out now if you're like most people your company probably doesn't have a work from anywhere policy which means that they won't let you work from abroad if that's the case let's see what you can do about it so first you can consider changing your work contract and what that means is you can go from being a full-time employee or a W-2 based employee to a freelancer or 1099 contractor now the reason why you would do this is because when you become a contractor your company is no longer responsible for you so they won't have any compliancy issues if you were to go work from another country now you will need to talk with HR and your line manager to see if this is even a possibility it's important to note that by becoming a freelancer you may lose some of your full-time employee benefits such as vacation time health insurance and employer contributions to your retirement fund now if that's not an option another thing you can do is check and see if your employer is open to working with an employer of record now and an employer of record or third party payroll provider what they do is allow companies to employ people in countries where they do not have an office or a tax entity established so for example if you want to work remotely from Germany but your company does not have an office there and they won't be compliant for taxes or employment labor laws what they can do is use an employer of record and that way you will be able to work from Germany legally and your company will not have any issues with compliancy two of the most popular companies out there that do this are deal and remote alright so what if neither of those options work for your employer well then it may be time to look for a new job if you really want to work remotely from another country maybe it's time to look for a company that has a work from anywhere policy now this is difficult but not impossible I myself actually worked for one of these companies I I worked for a us-based company remotely from Spain so again please check out my video that covers 14 work from anywhere companies you can find the video here last but not least if you can't find a work from anywhere company to work for then maybe it's time to become a freelancer so that means to leave your current employer and work as a freelancer or contractor for another company by freelancing you have full autonomy and flexibility over where you work meaning that you do not have to ask your employer for permission to work remotely from abroad tech companies and startups are great places to look at and why is that well they love hiring candidates as Freelancers because it relieves them of the burden of having to pay employer taxes all right if you have any questions let me know and if you need more resources to help you with your move abroad be sure to check
