what's driving my motorbike here and saw something very interesting a tractor with lots of women doing manual labor very often in some places in India you don't see women doing any kind of manual labor and here they were lifting things all over rural Rajasthan them there's a tongue twister if ever there was one I kept seeing women doing back-breaking labor so heavy all that on your head and not just that they were doing it with a big smile this fascinated me and called for a Herald investigates [Music] let's see what's happening here they're doing lots of manual labor although I don't speak a word of Hindi and hardly anyone in these hair parts even know hello in English I felt compelled to get up close and see this for myself what are you making now this is why Rajasthan is thus far my favorite state in India we don't share the same language here and I'm being a bit of a nuisance with my camera and all but still I was able to get a little smile and a tiny insight into what their daily life is like for me that is what I enjoy the most about travelling whoa so heavy you're very strong No and off they go the tractor is fully loaded so how exactly do you communicate with someone you don't share a language with personally I like to repeat a couple of words over and over again as I think it comes across as less threatening than rambling on using hundreds of words that in any case won't be understood I picked this up from a Japanese guy I met in Asia ones who didn't speak a word of English but who wanted to look at a digital camera I was holding he kept saying one word over and over again probably something like please please or show me show me in any case he succeeded I let him check out the camera if he'd been rambling on using tons of word that I didn't understand I would have been more reluctant to do so women and manual labor who would have thought amazing scenes from village life in Rajasthan so the next time you're on the road somewhere where we don't speak the local tongue don't let that stop you from interacting with people let's see if my camera here's the thing people keep telling me that in Rajasthan you don't have to worry about theft so I probably could have kept my my um my key and camera on everything here on the bike and nothing would have happened all right well soldier on and try and catch up with mr. bald as you can see that they didn't happen I didn't get very far this is just 500 meters down the road as I was driving to the fort earlier that day I cursed myself every time I drove past one of these old-fashioned water pumps I really wanted to try to carry one of those urns full of water on top of my head now here was my chance this is how the villagers get their water here from this well old fashioned pump and yeah I guess you can all figure out how it works no that's okay okay sadly these women although they were curious they didn't really understand what I wanted to do so things didn't quite go according to planned yet again thank you well the women here worked incredibly hard look at how heavy all these things are you're very strong incredible boy you speak English no English I just had to stop again I drove past this on my way there are there two walking up to the house I walked past it I know I drove past it on my way to the fort and I just dammit I should have stopped and I was a little late they just poured water or just come to water up from the wells I missed it but still able to capture some shots for you to show how they bring the water back from the well despite the fact that they don't have the physique of men so let's let's continue bye bye so yet again I set out to catch up with mr. J Bullock II but it should come as no surprise that yet again things did not go according to plan look at this at this stage I'd given up on trying to get people to understand that I wanted to carry that pocket on my head so instead I decided to just stand there for a little while and observe the division of labor in this little farming village here to the men seemed occupied with construction whereas the women did the farming what I've seen here you have people up there I'm not 100% sure what they are doing but I guess they have the big the big it's not weeds but they're growing something up here in the hills and here they have their Indian Grim Reaper albeit with a smaller side than her western counterpart luckily it wasn't my time to go as she turned away this your house you're speaking this no English okay Norway not Vega England yes England yes alright guys bye bye having so narrowly escaped the clutches of Indian Grim Reaper it was time to get a move on and catch up with mr. balls eventually I did but we didn't get very far before we yet again ran into an incredible scene of Rajasthani women going about their daily lives in a manner quite foreign to their Western counterparts if you want to see this full unedited clip because I'm going to do voiceovers here to keep things fresh please go and see my video titled foreigners work ancient Indian waterwheel let's do it for them yes let's give them the camera okay as I handed her the camera I wish you could see her face she was smiling and laughing and didn't even quite know how to hold it I'm not sure she has ever filmed with a mobile phone before but she got a hang of it pretty quickly so how heavy was this water contraption to push pretty damn heavy I tell you we did two laps and both of us were short of breath afterwards how these women do this on a daily basis I have no idea of course this spectacle of two europeans working this water contraption attracted some attention from other people walking by a woman carrying grain or something on her head stopped and was laughing uncontrollably behind us so I figured I had to go and give her some attention and see if she could speak English you are strong too how many kilos when I spoke to her though she just couldn't stop herself from laughing this woman here finds it very funny can I see this thing on your head how many kilos is it what's what's in here how many kilos after all these adventures to trek up the fort the freezing drive to it the drone flight the abandoned building the house I was invited into and all these little encounters with the workers along the road you saw in this episode it's hopefully beginning to sink in why I called this the best day in my traveling career in episode 1 so what what did they use this water for this water is for the goat what a place she's telling me to go again she's saying more more MORE but I'm so tired and thank you what anybody would anyway this was amazing thank you very much yes Helmut thank you guys bye bye but today wasn't over there was plenty of surprises to come rasa and this episode here's some food for thought as much as I enjoy narrating this without much controversy touring like this also leaves me with a lot of unanswered questions now my audience is as it has always been mainly Western that's also the case now with these India blogs traffic stats show that majority of views still come from outside not inside of India but thousands of Indians still watched these clips so here are some questions for you do women in rural areas work harder than men or is it just that the duties such as carrying water and other things to and from the house is their responsibility and seeing as this is often done along the road I simply got the impression that they work harder than the men if you wish to share your views on this in a comment section be my guest
