wolves are some of the most incredible creatures in the world known as highly intelligent pack animals humans often think of them as wild powerful and dangerous beasts but there's so much more to them than meets the eye from extraordinary displays of social affection to hybrid beings and rare species there's tons you probably don't know about these amazing animals with that join the bma's pack as we take a look at some of the most incredible wolves around the world [Music] the great gray wolves also known as timberwolves or western wolves gray wolves are elegant predators that were once the most widely distributed mammal on the planet from north america to eurasia they used to be the undisputed candid kings of the land but then unfortunately along came humans after being hunted down in revenge for killing livestock or just out of fear of their ferocious attacks the gray wolf's worldwide range drastically reduced by around one-third this has left a paltry approximate of just 300 000 grey wolves in the wild meaning the entire species has the same population size as st louis missouri while you won't find these wolves building cities anytime soon they do survive in territories that can span up to an enormous 1200 square miles but they don't inhabit them alone these wolves famously live in extended family groups called packs working together in these familial units gray wolves can defend their huge territories and bring down much larger prey than themselves alone the size of the pack can range from 4 all the way up to 30 members which as you can imagine means keeping tabs on everyone very difficult fortunately gray wolves have an inbuilt ability that allows them to locate all their pack members all they have to do is help [Music] [Music] these drawn out wavering house or a form of long-distance communication relaying information like their location the position of prey and warnings about predators but in order to be heard across the vast stretches of their territory they have to be loud so much so that a single howl can reach up to 115 decibels that's as loud as a jackhammer but between a musical wolfish whale and a relentless pneumatic drill i know which one i'd rather listen to if you fancy becoming a part of the bmas pack make sure you hit those like and subscribe buttons down below you can still be first to see the new incredible content i upload every day how about that the world's largest wolves on earth they're just three main species of wolf gray wolves red wolves and in a colored divergent twist ethiopian wolves and of these big three gray wolves aren't the only most common they are also the biggest and largest of them all but the subspecies of this category all vary wildly in terms of their size ranging from 40 to 175 pounds in weight alone so which of these subspecies are the largest of their kind starting fifth from the top are the great plains wolves the most common subspecies of grey wolf in the united states measuring in at a huge six and a half feet from nose to tail and weighing 110 pounds it's about the same size as an adult bull mastiff dog just with much fluffier coat and in fourth place is the alaskan interior wolf also aptly known as the yukon wolf which is where it resides it's about the same length as its great plane's cousins but it weighs in a little heavier at 120 pounds and third place is the tundra wolf which like its name suggests has adapted to extremely cold climates with a weight of 125 pounds and a top length of 7 feet these wolves have a size and coat comparable to that of a gigantic newfoundland dog just ahead of them in second place is the eurasian wolf which as you can probably tell is native to parts of northern europe they weigh in at an utterly staggering 160 pounds all built onto a 5 foot long frame although they're seriously stacked they're nothing compared to the largest wolves of them all the mckenzie valley wolf at an immense 175 pounds and up to seven feet in length these furry giants are bigger than most great danes which are some of the tallest and heaviest dogs in the world well i guess we all know who the real top dog is now the giant wolfhead as big as all those wolves may be none of them can compare to the wolves that existed thousands of years ago larger and stronger than even the modern gray wolf these beasts had bigger teeth and more powerful jaws built to kill enormous prey like ground sloths and mastodons and how exactly do we know they existed well it's all thanks to the discovery of super wolves like this one found poking out of the siberian permafrost back in 2018 the severed head of a truly massive wolf had been perfectly preserved in the ice for over 30 thousand years where most modern wolf heads measure 9 to 11 inches long this brilliant beast had a head that was almost 16 inches long for perspective that's about the same length from the top of a human head to just under the armpits now that's one whopper of a wolf eventually scientists revealed it was an ice age step wolf a massive predator that once stalked the icy plains hunting mammoths and rhinos alike as sad as it is that they're long extinct i for one am relieved could you imagine packs of these formidable hunters prowling around the suburbs they'd barely be a snack for them yikes the direwolf resurrection following the success of hbo's game of thrones the show's iconic direwolves became something of an overnight sensation although their designs had been based on real albeit long extinct direwolves the affectionate and trusting nature they displayed on tv was sadly plunked out of pure fantasy with the amazing appearance of a wolf but the loyalty and demeanor of a dog fans of the show were left pining for the fictional animals but while the show may have ended dire wolves are being resurrected kind of in south oregon dog breeder louie schwartz has spent the last 30 years creating a dog that she thinks fills the footprints or in this case paw prints of the coveted direwolf it all started with german shepherds which schwarz deemed to be the most intelligent of dogs from there she selectively bred them with a host of different pooches over the generations cherry-picking certain aspects of each one this included alaskan malamutes for their body structure english mastiffs for their strong bones irish wolfhounds for their length and height and great pyrenees for their shorter ears the final creation of this build a wolf workshop was the utterly incredible american alsatian puppies of this breed are born astonishingly cute but grew up to be tall stocky golden eyed and undeniably wolfish looking with a top end weight of 120 pounds they're only a few pounds off the size of their extinct ancestors but these direwolf wannabes don't have a drop of real wolf blood in them making them much cuter and cuddlier alternatives to their ferocious forebearers what do you think do they live up to the direwolf name are they just dogged imposters let me know down in those comments below the bear necessities according to the laws of nature wolves and bears rarely get along after all they hunt the same prey prowl the same lands and use all the same resources if the two cross paths it can result in a fatal fight but one such meeting in the wild somehow cultivated a truly bizarre friendship unbelievably this wolf and brown bear were captured enjoying each other's company out on the chilly winter plains were they shared meals and for lack of a better understanding hung out together like this wasn't weird enough the wolf also appeared to be accepted by other bears in the area and was captured frolicking around with them as well the world was left truly stopped how was it possible for two formidable predators to form such a close bond while it's not clear some theories suggest that wild animals who are kicked out of their group might take some odd steps in order to survive on their own like cuddling up to a bear for example although considering this wolf was on its own it might simply have been seeking companionship being pack animals its need for social interaction and company may have overridden its instincts to fight and i think we can agree that's a pretty beautiful thing in any species the blind wolf the picturesque park omega in quebec canada is a certified haven for wolf fans their observatory offers face-to-face experiences with the park's wolf population but there's one lone wolf that really stands out from the pack it's not just a brilliant white of its coat that makes it look like a ghost haunting the hillside but also the milky color of its eyes as otherworldly as it looks that bluish fog clouding its stair could be a symptom of some pretty severe eye problems like cataracts or glaucoma which can lead to blindness although seeing how extensive the coverage is there's a good chance this poor wolf is already completely blind in the wild this would be a huge problem because wolves rely heavily on their sight to hunt it's for this reason you don't see many blind predators out in the wild or at least you don't see them for very long however this wolf is likely receiving help from the sanctuary it's in keeping it in a relatively healthy condition all thanks to the creature comforts they provide the world's oldest wolf just like dogs wolves have a much shorter life expectancy than humans in the wild a good innings will see these majestic creatures live up to eight years but in captivity where they're cared for has almost doubled to 14 years but there's one wolf that proved to be the exception to that rule reaching a remarkable 18 years old canadian wolf madonn not only lived well past that 14-year milestone but she also became the oldest known wolf in the world although she wasn't always destined to be this ancient at a tender eight days old madonna and her brother kagozi were taken from a zoo to be hand reared and raised in captivity in shropshire england back then madonn was an adorably cute pup with deep black fur which like a human gradually began to gray as she got older though instead of turning into a grumpy old lady but dodd's hand-reared start to life meant she was incredibly well socialized and happily engaged with humans she didn't know while she may have acted like a large dog at times she rarely heeded any kind of human command guess there's no teaching old wolves new tricks sadly magnificent madod's time on earth came to an end in 2017. just a few months after her brother passed away let's hope there's plenty of good hunting and tasty treats waiting for them in the afterlife radioactive wolves in 1986 a catastrophic reactor meltdown in the chernobyl nuclear power plant released a devastating amount of radioactive debris across the ukraine discharging about 400 times more fallout than the bomb dropped on hiroshima the surrounding districts were immediately evacuated the event left an area roughly the same size as rhode island completely abandoned and is still so radioactive that no one is allowed to live there to this day but that doesn't mean it's devoid of all life despite the radiation european gray wolves have unbelievably thrived in the area apparently adapting well to the absence of humans their population density within the exclusion zone is up to seven times greater than wolves and surrounding reserves scientists studying this phenomenon have been left stunned and rightfully so early studies from this exclusion zone reported a huge influx of genetic mutations in plant and animal life but the wolves it would seem have escaped this fate instead of glowing hellhounds researchers observing the wolves reported that they appeared pretty normal for the most part it's unknown exactly what mutations they might carry but in time they could spread these to other wolf populations as well on one hand this kind of mutation contagion sounds terrifying but on the other i really want to know what an army of super mutant wolves would look like surprising sea wolves when you hear the word wolf nearly everyone envisions the crafty canids prowling through a forest or stalking through the snow very few if any will have imagined a wolf standing on a beach pawing through washed up kelp or perched by a stream trying to catch a fish and yet that's exactly what the sea wolves of the british colombian coastlines do these elusive creatures which grow to about the same size as an average german shepherd have unfathomably evolved to live in harmony with the ocean so while they may never hunt or even see a deer in their lives they happily live on a diet that's up to ninety percent seafood this briny diet sees them swim out into the open water as far seven and a half miles and the hunt for seals or animal carcasses washed into the oceans but there are also avid beachcombers and will snaffle through the bracket on the shoreline in search of fish row and barnacles yummy this trait makes them unlike any other wolves in the world but they're also incredibly rare they once held territories that stretched as far down the western coast as california but these have dwindled in size thanks to human activity although the canadian governments still consider all wolves to be vermin it's hard to see these coastal cannons as anything other than sushi loving swimmers the big black wolves despite their name gray wolves aren't always gray found in the forests of north america the colossal cannons also have jet black coats and skin allowing them to prowl through the wilderness like majestic murderous shadows but beneath all that fur they're hiding a secret that not many people know about as naturally wolfish as they look these cold colored coats came from interbreeding wild wolves and believe it or not domestic dogs almost 47 000 years ago researchers found the genes of modern black wolves from yellowstone park and the canadian arctic had the exact same melanistic mutation responsible for the dark colored coats of household pooches but despite this domestic mutation wild black wolves somehow survived and thrived in their environment indicating there was an advantage to going over to the dark side however scientists still aren't exactly sure what it is some theorize that a darker coat aids a wolf's ability to blend into forest environments allowing them to better hunt their prey others have found that the mutation provides immunity to certain skin infections found in warmer forested environments whatever the reason may be science can't deny that this obsidian shade makes the wolves look ridiculously badass the amazing aquela now despite appearances not all north american black wolves are dark and dangerous as proven by the incredibly affectionate achella under the guardianship of the extraordinarily brave andrei musenko akela has been raised in captivity ever since he was a pup being part of this black wolf's pack means mosinko can get close and play with akela but i'm not talking about a game of fetch yusenko often uses his bare hands and arms to play fight with the huge wolf who happily takes the appealing appendages in his terrifying teeth while musenko currently has all his limbs attached he's under no illusion that this playful pup can turn at any moment during one feeding session musinko was filming aquila when he was suddenly distracted and achilla didn't hesitate to lunge at the opportunity fortunately musinko walked away unharmed but the incident reminded him just how quickly the doggish demeanor of wolves like aquella can give way to their natural instincts but not all his meal times are that frightening during his time being reared musinko discovered akela has a strange sweet tooth for apples now naturally black wolves aren't omnivorous they're purebred carnivores but they have been known to consume a small amount of plant matter like seeds berries and fruits even so i think akela like me would prefer a big fat steak over a meagre vegan diet any day the rarest wolves in the world when you hear the phrase endangered species which animals immediately come to mind well i bet most of you thought about gorillas rhinos and maybe elephants very few probably spared a thought for this unlucky cannon this lean bushy-tailed boy is a red wolf one of just seven left in the wild in north carolina at around 26 inches tall with a top weight of 80 pounds red wolves are much smaller than their gray wolf cousins with their pointy ears broad muzzles and buff brown coats they're often mistaken for coyotes despite being much stockier than the wiley creatures but throughout the 20th century when coyotes started to thrive in the southwestern states of america red wolf numbers suddenly plummeted from competing with coyotes to being hunted by humans red wolves began dying out in droves on their own turf despite efforts to revive the native north carolina population disease parasites and competition with the coyotes have kept their numbers frighteningly low while the captive population is thriving conservationists are still holding out hope that with increased protections one day wild red wolves might be able to make it back from the brink the dog that wasn't a dog when a man from tucson arizona saw a sign on a house that said free puppy he like many of us i'm sure couldn't resist knocking on that door he was greeted by the perky ears and giant eyes of this adorable pup and knew instantly he had to adopt him but despite the puppy dog eyes new pup neo turned out to be a real handful he was difficult if not impossible to house train he demanded his owners and only his owner's attention all the time and he simply refused to stay put on numerous occasions he managed to chew through the garden fence just to play with the neighbor's dogs while it was all fun and games to neo the neighbors weren't amused they took neo to a local shelter but the staff there quickly realized something was a mess his long-legged build was one clue but the way he nervously avoided human interaction was the biggest giveaway neo wasn't a dog he was a wolf dog like the name suggests it's a hybrid canine breed that's part wolf and part domestic dog but neo's genetics were dominantly wolf-like that's why he had such a dog-like affection for one person but was constantly trying to create a pack all while being distrustful of humans ultimately neo was taken into the wolf connection rescue center and sanctuary there he wasted no time becoming part of a brand new pack joining in with the nightly hal and seeking out the alpha female straight away now in many u.s states it's actually illegal to keep a wolf dog so if you ever see that fateful free puppy sign make sure you double check what kind of pup you're taking home yuki the wolf dog even though they may be a handful wolf dogs are still very good boys don't believe me well take a look at this adorable face and tell me otherwise this colossal k9 is yuki a wolf dog who's 87.5 gray wolf 8.6 siberian husky 3.9 percent german shepherd and 100 huge although photos taken of him from this angle do tend to exaggerate his size a little but chowing down on a belly-busting 40 pounds of meat every week has left him at a hefty 120 pounds that's about the same size as a 5'4 woman but don't let that comparison deceive you because he sounds like a very old man [Music] [Music] although he still plays around like a young pup he really is getting on you see yuki is about 13 years old but he didn't always have such a happy life at just 8 months old yuki was abandoned at a shelter his owner simply hadn't been able to care for the incredibly fast-growing pup but fortunately he was saved by the heroes at the shy wolf sanctuary in naples florida there he's been able to thrive with other wolves and wolf dogs like him becoming a furry ambassador for his breed the vulca solby after learning about yuki and neo you're probably thinking that wolf dogs are huge canines that are impossible to train well clearly you're not russian because in mother russia wolf dogs haven't just been trained they've been employed for use by the country's military service that's right these are real life wolf dog soldiers also known as the volkasobi these wolf dogs are a third generation crossbreed mix of gray wolf and sherman shepherd and according to the breeders they're perfect military partners being pack animals they're obedient and friendly only towards humans they trust meaning they're always on guard on top of that tests undertaken at russia's perm institute demonstrated that a highly trained wolf dog took just 15 to 20 seconds to track down a target in training sessions but their ordinary police dog counterparts took a staggering three to four minutes to complete the same task this comes down to wolves having a sharper sense of smell sight and hearing compared to most dogs meaning wolf dogs inherit a kind of upgrade to their senses if all these frankly unfathomable reports are to be believed the vocal sobe's incredible senses are currently being put to use defending russia's borders so if you're traveling over there anytime soon make sure you're on your very best behavior or else you could end up with these wolves snapping at your heels the maned wolf it may be called the maned wolf but when you look at this bizarre creature you can't help but ask yourself what exactly is that it's got the sturdy body of a wolf with the pointed face of a fox and the impossibly long legs of a deer and to make it even more complicated despite its name it's not actually a wolf so just what are we looking at here the puzzling anatomical mix of the maned wolf stems from the fact it's not closely related to other canids and sits in its own genus called chrysosion unlike their distant cousins maned wolves aren't pack animals and tend to hunt along and while most wolves communicate through howling this solitary soldier makes its points more pungently it urinates on just about everything it claims from hunting past to dead prey but its whiz has a stench that's curiously similar to a certain psychoactive drug you know mary jay wacky tobacco the devil's lettuce so much so that in 2006 police were called out to rotterdam zoo in the netherlands to investigate complaints of someone sparking up in the exhibit area but when they got there they discovered that their prime culprits were the exhibit's main wolves many of which had been taking a bathroom break talk about taking the pee which of these amazing wolves did you find the most unbelievable let me know down in the comments below and thanks for watching you
