you've heard of Fate Stay Night you've heard of Carno kyokai you may have even heard of tsukihime but you may not be familiar with a certain visual novel that exists in the tight Moon Universe one that is arguably the most important out of them all which on the Holy Night serves as the core Foundation underneath every single one of tight moons works it's also the most perfect example of what happens when you're in the wrong place at the wrong time which on the Holy Night also known as mahoyo stars two girls aoko aozaki and Alice kulanji two exceptional Mages living in the modern world they live together in the Mysterious Mansion on the outskirts of the city honing their talents perfecting their magecraft and defending their land from foreign Invaders their magic is a craft that is passed down from generation to generation and the mere existence of magic is a secret that must be kept hidden at any cost necessary and then when plain ass dude sees him kill an enemy in the middle of the night murder might be a bit Overkill but it must be done unfortunately for Alco and Alice killing might be a harder task than they originally thought because he's got a superpower completely unexpected for the both of them being completely oblivious sojiro Suzuki is a normal guy sure everyone around him finds him a bit strange but after living in the mountains his entire life it's no wonder that Concepts like electricity and two-floor buildings are exactly common knowledge to him really he's just trying to find his bearing in a world completely foreign to him and now let's add one more to that list against his will yes the weakness of aoko aozaki a strong hot-headed determined Mage with the talent for destroying things and Alice kulunji a pure blooded witch that controls fairy tales as her familiars is an average guy who works one too many night shifts I swear nasu has a thing with pairing overwhelmingly strong women with plain ass guys who totally couldn't hurt a fly this contrast is the most amusing and hilarious part of maholio you can't really grasp how funny some of these interactions are without acknowledging how shockingly ignorant and yet innocently wholesome SoJO is he genuinely has no idea what's going on half the time even when alco's spitting out some Brash slaying they were having to deal with him almost ready to strangle the guy for his incompetence he'll just stand there with the same blank face expression much to alco's frustration and her many many facial expressions pretty much the entire reason why I picked up maholio in the first place I certainly didn't expect this country bumpkin to be my favorite type Moon male protagonist SoJO isn't anything special but he's not normal either and yet he's like alko and Alice very unique with their own set of strange circumstances put them all together into one house and you have the recipe for some odd interactions in a way mahoyu is basically an overcomplicated version of co-ed dorm sharing everyone gets along well enough fighting amongst each other is sometimes unavoidable and someone's always left to do a majority of the housework because the others won't of course that's enough for normal people like you and I but for Mages even the most simplest of disagreements can lead out to an all-out magical Warfare Bear all is fine until someone gets their tea wrong and the demon puppets and church choirs come out of Blazing if you ever wanted to know what a visual novel equivalent of AAA video game is mohoyo is the perfect example it is a cinematic experience like no other and it absolutely raises the bar for visual novel production quality because despite being constructed with still images and Frames you'll get some absolutely fantastic action sequences chapter 5 of mahogyo is a phenomenal display of your orchestrated magic spectacle full of special visual effects explosive sound effects and the actual backing of a symphonic orchestra [Music] foreign [Music] verse is wild and everyone has their own way of doing things their own style their own motivations and their own goals and that's reflected in their magic Alco may be a fledgling modern Magis but she's a free-spirited hard-working genius with an impressive battle Instinct meanwhile Alice is a pure blooded witch largely withdrawn from the world but when aggravated can turn into a cold-blooded monster that deploys creatures of fantasy as weapons of mass destruction magic in a way is a representation of the user's personality and their generational history and that's important to recognize because for as much as maholio appears as this action cinematic visual novel it's also where the core Foundation of magic and magecraft can be found while other works like Fate Stay night and tsukihime merely scratched the surface upon some of these Concepts mahoyo is essentially the starting building block that said if Alco and Alice's weakness is good-natured well-toned boys my weakness is Natsu's complex ass magic power system there's a lot of it the author konokunasu has quite a away with words both in his prose and his dialogue it's eloquently descriptive and expressive respectively speaking you can see it reflected in how the story establishes maholio's atmospheric sequences as well as the many tense situations SoJO in Peril or not the overall scene Direction complements is two no standard Vision novel face Sprite fall with bottom text box like in most visual novels but actual thoughtful shot composition over-the-shoulder perspectives silhouette Framing and conversational cuttings I would also say that nasu is great at detailing magic action sequences but at the same time it invokes a sense of what the did you just say to me a lot of mechanics of how magic works are fully explained here hell there's even an exclusive chapter just for one concept A magecraft sure you can get the full original version here but I can also get the same mileage by reading the SparkNotes version in the type Moon Wikia page and then attempt to try to understand what NASA's cooking up at least it's much easier than trying to explain what the correct order to watch fate is at its core which on the Holy Night is about three unique and I'm saying that as a big understatement individuals living together in the same house and the strange circumstances that they get into they were people who were never meant to cross paths and yet they did SoJO never expected to find himself involved in the World of Magic meanwhile alko and Alice never expected his intrusion to be so influential either it's a continuous interaction between these three that makes this visual novels so likable as they grow more accustomed to one another understanding and learning about each other's beliefs and values alko and Alice may live in a world of secrecy but without sojiro they would have missed out on a crucial Factor about ordinary humans themselves something so important that it would reframe their entire Viewpoint you just need one Ordinary Boy to feed your overwhelmingly strong girl boss a 5 out of 5 from me if you enjoyed this review of maholio check out my video on other type Moon works here I would also like to thank everyone on patreon for helping support me in covering visual novels you guys are fantastic and if you would like to be a part of that effort please consider
