step one is to achieve the proper closing height the water level should be one inch below the skimmer with a sand filter do a thorough cleaning with the back wash cycle to ensure that the filter is clean and you brought the water level down as far as you can you'll need to take the water level down an extra inch or two below this face plate you see here to ensure the water closure is a height level you can get down to this level by either using a submersible pump or you can use a siphon to achieve this level step two in our closure process is to install our skimmer face plate plug and our return plug for the winter the winter plug for the skimmer simply pushes in place to protect the skimmer from ice and snow during the course of the winter our return is a three-piece part our ball our ring and our interior socket the socket many ties can be stiff if the socket is tough to get out you'll install the return key to give you leverage to ensure you can remove the socket when done you should have three pieces left make sure all three removed then you can install the winter plug to ensure that you return is now safe as well the next step is to now properly winterize our sand system first thing we want to do is put our handle on the winterized position on top of our valve our next step is to release and unscrew both lines first line is connect line stays down second line disconnect line stays down both lines just stay unattached from the pool itself line being open there are three plugs to remove the first one located in front of the pump the second on the side of the chlorinator and the third on the bottom of the sand filter all three you watch the store right inside the pump basket
