magical realism i've got you covered i have so many fun books i'm going to talk about today and i cannot wait [Music] before we get started i am so excited to tell you guys that today this video is sponsored by the amazing anna louisa i have worked with them in the past they are a sustainable amazing beautiful wonderful jewelry company that i personally love i am fairly minimalistic when it comes to my jewelry preferences i wish i liked more jewelry honestly i just forget about accessorizing about 90 of the time which is why i like anna louisa so much because they make just the most stunning pieces that literally go with anything and that i wear all the time this necklace is one of the more recent pieces that i got as well as these stunning earrings i thought that i wouldn't like them by the way like together on one ear i thought maybe i would want to wear a stud with one of them but honestly i kind of like them together so i'm feeling this whole vibe if you watch my videos you know that i never take off this one necklace that i actually got from them last year i never take it off i honestly forget to take it off after the time before i get to the shower and it still looks so beautiful it's still such a stunning piece i love that they have just the best quality long-lasting pieces they're also really really affordable like their pieces start at 40 which i think is so affordable and they're also sustainable like i mentioned which is just so awesome i love that that's part of their mission and they wanted me to let you guys know that they are running an amazing deal for black friday so we'll go ahead and link in the description below a link to their website definitely check them out for the black friday deals honestly you guys perfect holiday gifts for someone you love or yourself i'm telling you they're my fave definitely go check them out all right real quick sip of coffee and we are gonna be talking about the books i'm so so excited i have a lot of books here let me count them one two three i think i have like 14 books i've got lazy and kind of stopped counting but tons of books honestly there's gonna be no organized process for this video it's just gonna be really cozy and chill and i'm just going to show you the books so let's go ahead and dive in i will say two i should have mentioned this in the beginning in case people have already clicked off but these aren't just like christmasy books specific to christmas they are wintertime cozy want to read by the fire atmospheric you can feel the cold on your face and like you're trapped in the forest in the woods basically these are just very like winter time specific reads there are some that are more holiday themed but that's not the case for all of them so yeah hopefully you find one in here that makes you want to read it that's the point okay let's get going i'm being really weird today i'm sorry so the first book i want to talk about is one of my favorite wintery reads i'm just going to start it off with a bang i don't actually don't know if i've talked about this book on my channel yet but it is the snow child by aon ivy well i'm sure i've talked about it but i don't think i've talked about it recently anyway it's a stunning book you guys if you want to read something that is just so atmospheric literally cabin in the middle of the woods in alaska in 1920s snow people like this is this is the book for you so this is actually an adult i would say like magical realism literary fiction novel that follows a husband and a wife who are really struggling to get pregnant they want to have a child so bad but they just can't so trigger warning for that if that is something that is sensitive to you you may not want to read this book i found it handled the subject really well but i personally don't know what it's like to struggle with that so just forewarning you that if that is something you don't want to read about then maybe don't pick this one up but one night the husband and wife decide to make a snowman outside of their little cabin and the next morning the snowman is gone but there is a child instead and that's all i want to say this book is pretty mysterious it's very beautiful there are moments that i cried there are moments that i just felt like absolute sheer joy i will say that the sad moments are really sad there there are some hard to read moments and and the way it was written was just so stunning but for that reason honestly i loved it even more i didn't expect to like this one as much as i did but man it just has stuck with me i actually read this for our book club that i was a part of as part of a book club back when i lived in tennessee and we read this book and it's one of our favorite books across the board everyone really enjoyed this book who read it and it's a great book to discuss so i do recommend reading it with a buddy or a book club it's just really good okay totally switching gears here this also is an adult novel but it is a thriller and that is no exit by taylor adams i'm sure many of you have read this book honestly i don't know a lot of people who haven't read this book yet i think it came out last year and it's a mystery thriller so definitely more intense than the last one but it follows the story of a girl who is driving through a blizzard to get to her mother who i believe has cancer or she's in the hospital either way she's jumping in the car last minute she's going to visit her mom and because the roads are so bad because of the snow she has to pull over and stop at those little like rest stops that they have you know the side of the highway i feel like there's a different word for rest stop but maybe not so when she stops at the rest stop there's actually a handful of other people who are also stranded there and waiting for the storm to pass she runs out to her car to go get something and she realizes in the car next to her that there is a little girl trapped in a cage in the car very intense i know but now she makes it her mission to rescue this girl and to this day this is one of the most action-packed craziest most whirlwind books i have ever read and i absolutely loved it it was in my favorites of last year and i can't recommend it enough if you're looking for something that will just be so intense and crazy and kind of fun and just ah so exciting i can't recommend this one enough and it takes place during a snowstorm so could be fun to read if you're stuck in a snowstorm maybe not maybe not but maybe i feel like coffee might have been a bad idea i don't know what's happening to me but we're gonna drink more of it that's for sure so the next book i have to mention it couldn't not be on this list because it's one of my all-time favorite books and it's just probably the most atmospheric book i think about when i think of wintery reads and that is green glass house this is by kate milford this is a middle grade and can we just talk about the cover i mean i sometimes just pick up this book and stare at the cover because it's so pretty so this book follows the story of our main character milo who is adopted and his parents own the green glass house they own this inn that people come to stay at and it takes place during his winter break so he just wants to have like this cozy introverted homebody type of christmas break and i'm like bro i get you i understand he doesn't want to have anyone show up at the end he doesn't want to have to deal with any strangers coming by and just like disrupting their christmas vacation but alas of course people do and this inn is located actually by a smuggler's town is how they describe it and so they get a lot of curious people that come and stay and that show up and as each person shows up they start to realize that these people seem like related in a way like they know each other somehow for some reason and it's just a really great story that ensues they have a lot of conversations by the fireside and they go outside sometimes and there's like this crazy winter storm happening and i just loved it i think this is a great like wintertime mystery i read it when it was cold and wintry and i will never forget that if you're looking for something a little bit more light-hearted but still really fun and action-packed and has a mysterious element and has a little bit of like a twist ending i really recommend this one i love it so much the next book that i recommend is spinning silver this is by naomi novik and i'll just go ahead and say right now that this was not my favorite book i read it for that book club that i talked about earlier and it's just a beasty fantasy book but i understand that beasty fantasy books are pretty well liked by a lot of people in the book community just not me as much but i will say that this was still a very atmospheric and stunning novel so this book i believe it takes place in either russia or like a fantasy russia it's very cold it's very wintry if you're looking for that this book has got it trust me in plenty it follows the story of three different female characters all from different types of backgrounds and it's kind of like a rumplestiltskin retelling i remember that the three females like very badass very awesome very empowering stories to read about and they all end up kind of coming together at the end so i really do recommend this book if you love fantasy i know my friend kailyn loves this book so if you like her recommendations you'll probably really like this book as well for me i'm just not a huge fantasy reader but i did enjoy elements of this book if i liked fantasy i probably would have loved it that doesn't really make any sense if you're looking for something fantastical if you're looking for something to get like swept up and just have this kind of like escapism moment where you're in this fantasy world and there's these things happening you're following awesome female characters then i totally recommend this one absolutely it would be the perfect book for you okay the next book that i recommend is one day in december by josie silver and this is an adult romance book i told you guys i have books from almost every genre in this video but this is a stunning beautiful story i really liked this one i thought it was so cute i'm not a huge romance reader but i really like this one also as a side note it is worth saying that you don't need to read this book in december or even really in the winter time because a good portion of it does take place during different times of the year but it is very atmospheric still and i did read it i believe two years ago in the winter time and i really really enjoyed it but basically it's the story of our main character lori who doesn't believe in love of her sight doesn't really believe in love but one day she's sitting on the bus and she like looks outside the window and she sees this man at the bus stop and they make eye contact and she just knows that he's the one and of course then the bus drives away and she never sees him again until i think a year later or two years later fast forward where her roommate and best friend brings over her mystery date that she's been talking about and it's the guy so yeah and then this book actually takes place like it spans over i think a couple of years if i'm remembering correctly i thought it was a heartwarming romance i really liked the characters i think this is honestly one of my most favorite romances so i really really recommend this one if you are in the mood for something cute and fluffy and very like lifetime movie-esque you should pick this one up it's super cute the next book that i have is the afterlife of holly chase this is by cynthia han this is a young adult book that is basically a scrooge reimagined retelling it follows the story of holly chase who is a very bratty i think she's like 17 years old and she dies i think on christmas and in the afterlife she has to be a part of this scrooge project where she basically plays i think it's the ghost of christmas present she plays one of the ghosts and has to help people better their life in the real life before they die so they don't screw up their life if that makes any sense basically she has to like kind of start doing this what to her is like charity work to help these people and she's stuck in the afterlife because of that and she ends up one christmas helping this one boy that she ends up kind of having feelings for and it goes from there it was a good book i had a couple of issues with this book but nothing that was like oh my gosh i can't stand this book it was more just like a couple of little things i think it was just me because i find myself more critical of young adult books than any other books for whatever reason but this is a really fun whirlwind book if you love young adult if you're looking for something that's pretty easy to get through has a good message has characters that you'll feel invested in and that you'll enjoy i definitely recommend this one the next book that i recommend if you are looking for something wintry and atmospheric and maybe a little bit spooky is the winter people this is by jennifer mcmahon i actually read this this year i think i read it either back in march or april and i really liked it i was really surprised my friend liv recommended this to me and i enjoyed it there were times i really didn't it's not a perfect book by any means but if you're looking for something spooky and a little paranormal and a little creepy then this is the one for you it takes place in two timelines so we are in the present and then 1908 and we're following the story of a family who lives in this one house during the winter time and there's a well and there's a daughter and something bad happens and it's kind of oh i don't want to say that because i might spoil something but it's kind of like a historical mystery and there's some creepy things that happen the family in the present day consists of two daughters and a mom and the mom disappears and so the daughters are looking for the mom but they also have to figure out the mystery behind this house that they live in what happened what was the tragedy and yeah i feel like i'm not explaining this well at all but it's very mysterious i definitely think there are times that will leave you on the edge of your seat and if you're looking for something that is mysterious and chilling and still atmospheric and paranormal than this one is for you the next book that i recommend picking up in the winter time this one is a little bit more i would say specific maybe to christmas but it is frederick bachmann's the deal of a lifetime this is a very small book you guys like really really tiny there's colored pictures and the words are really big i think it's maybe 100 pages not it's like 70 pages so it's really small i actually read it for the first time last year and told myself that i would pick it up every year from then on because it was just so poignant and touching i actually have never read anything else by frederick bachman but i do know that he is a well-loved author and has written many poignant and touching stories and this one seems like that's exactly the same it tells the story of a father who has been very selfish his whole life and is reflecting over kind of the choices that he has made and the ways that he has failed his family failed his son and one night he has to face a decision that could change the entire life of a little girl in a hospital it's very touching i don't want to say anything other than that but it's a really great novel and i think it's something to pick up and remember the real reason for being with family and the real reason of life and just finding deeper meaning in some of the things that i think it's easy to take for granted i really love this book and i think it's a great one to pick up and read either by yourself or with a friend with some family it's really really good i can't recommend it enough okay and these next couple of books i just have three more they are books that i personally have not actually read yet but i am planning to read this wintry season they do seem very atmospheric so i thought i would just toss them in here the first one is the baron and the nightingale this is by katherine arden i know that this is book one of a trilogy i believe yes trilogy we are reading it for our book club this year we're doing the months of november and december together and this is the book that we decided to pick up so if you're interested in participating pick it up read it with us you can join us in the discord which is linked down below or for the live shows that we have uh but yeah we are reading this one and i'm really really excited this one i know for sure is set in russia so very wintry it looks like there's like a cabin i just love the whole scene of a cabin in the middle of the woods it's like snowing and near by the fire i just want that in my life it sounds like this is a story that follows a family in russia whose father one night brings home a new wife and the wife forbids the children or the family to honor their household spirits so kind of like follow their religion that they're used to following and because of that a lot of bad things are starting to happen it sounds like one of the sisters of the family has to kind of rebel against what her stepmother is telling her to do in order to save the family sounds like a very exciting story and i'm really excited to see how all of it unfolds i'm really excited to read this one i think it just sounds really powerful it sounds like our main character is strong and inspiring and just an absolute heron so i'm really really excited to read it and you guys should let me know if you plan on reading it with us okay and then the last two books that i picked up recently that i personally have not read but they sound really really great for the wintertime slash christmas season but the first one that i have is the christmas train by david badalci i think that's how you say his name and then mr dickens and his carol by samantha silva i think these just sound so fun and i'm totally in the mood i've been like watching all of the lifetime christmas movies and you can't tell i just really excited for christmas i love christmas that's like my favorite holiday ever so i picked these two up because they just sound perfect for the season speaking of lifetime movies i think this christmas train one was actually turned into a movie i have never seen it nor have i heard about it but it had really fun reviews on amazon so i just went ahead and picked it up and now of course i can't figure out what what the story's about oh okay so it says that disillusioned journalist tom langdon must get from washington dc to la in time for christmas he's forced to travel by train he begins a journey of rude awakenings thrilling adventures and holiday magic i'm so excited it says he has no idea that the locomotives pulling him across america will actually take him into the rugged terrain of his own heart as he rediscovers people's essential goodness and someone very special he believed he had lost ah it sounds so cute i'm so excited to read this one perfect christmas read i can't wait i'm probably hyping it up too much in my mind but it just sounds adorable and it like it sounds like an absolute lifetime movie and i'm here for it this other one mr dickens and his carol sounds really intriguing i'm just gonna read you the back again because i feel like i am just butchering half of the descriptions today but it says charles dickens is not feeling the christmas spirit his newest book is an utter flop the critics have turned against him relatives near and far hound him for money but when his publishers try to blackmail him into writing a christmas book he refuses and a serious bout of writer's block sets in oh no seeking inspiration on a long night's walk through london dickens meets the mysterious eleanor lovejoy who might be just the muse he needs as dickens deadlines and creditors close in eleanor propels him on a scrooge-like journey that tests everything he believes in about generosity friendship ambition and love this story he writes will change christmas forever it sounds so cute i just love all the cheesiness during this season i'm not gonna lie so these are the ones i plan on reading and i thought i would share them with you just in case you would like to read them too all right you guys well those are all of the wintery book recommendations that i have for you you should let me know down in the comments below have you heard of any of these books have
