early in the movie tokyo drift character sean boswell stands before a judge to be sentenced for illegal street racing his sentence he will be sent to the global capital of illegal street racing in japan what isn't that kind of like putting jeffrey epstein in charge of recruiting for the girl scouts just saying this was just one of the unrealistic but fun and interesting errors in this movie but wait until you see what else there is hello i'm craig lieberman if you don't know who i am you're not alone i'm a gearhead who's been ticky ring on cars since the 1980s i've owned more than 40 cars in that time but i never dreamed that some of my own cars would start in a major movie franchise my r34 gtr my toyota supra and my nissan maxima all had starring roles in universal's first two fast and furious movies and i served as a technical advisor to these early films i love all things automotive and my videos help me share my passion with like-minded people all around the world plot holes gaffs goofs and continuity errors have been a part of movie making since the very beginning in fact there's a ton of videos floating around on youtube about various continuity errors in different movies some are so crazy some are so egregious you will never be able to watch that movie again without focusing on these errors so who's to play the director the editors the script supervisor all of these things are interesting to movie buffs but for fast and furious fans there's relentless scrutiny on the errors in these movies so much so that the memes have become a part of american pop culture and you see them on social media every day so i thought it was high time to make a video about the errors in my favorite movie of the franchise tokyo drift so let's have a little fun look at some things that were pretty laughable maybe a little shocking or just plain wrong during the first race between the monte carlo and the viper the stereotypical scanly clad starter girl pulls off her bra twirls it around throws it in the air and lands about 10 feet in front of the two cars both drivers take off shift gears accelerate for a few seconds and then drive past the bra which is now 100 to 200 feet from where it landed what did the wind pick it up and carry it or was it just carrying something heavy in the bra second thing when the viper hits the concrete pipe if you're really paying attention the interior shot of the airbags deploying shows the passenger seat empty and the film is now flipped so it looks like the car is a right-hand drive car oops that's an editing mistake number three hollywood has always been all about stereotypical characters i get it so having the kid from home improvement as the quintessential high school jock is no surprise the part though where he's bragging about how his viper has a borla exhaust and does zero to 60 and 4.3 seconds something seemed a little off about that why is even mentioning that sean retorts with i see you read the brochure ah if the guy had read the brochure he'd know that his car actually does zero to 60 in the high threes and i'm pretty sure a douchey guy like this would probably claim the quicker time hell even supercar blondie reads the brochure for god's sake so i'm not sure what was going on there number four the [ __ ] girlfriend long before the jeffrey epstein scandal broke it was apparently okay for a young female character to offer her body as a prize i've been to my fair share of street races back in the day but i never saw someone include their lady as part of the winnings didn't matter i didn't have a car fast enough to win any street races back then anyway so there you go number five the race itself what kind of race is this typically a drag race is a drag race never in my life have i heard of an obstacle course for cars as part of a street race you go out into a deserted area or into an empty industrial park and race at night these fools go to a construction site in broad daylight what there's construction equipment everywhere and where are the workers it's a school day right in california construction sites operate during school days so i got to call bs on the whole premise second the monte carlo is on racing slicks no there's no tread that's a racing slick no way he would be driving on the dirt and secondly he'd want to start from a dig but with slicks on the car he would have put multiple car lengths on the viper right out of the hole never mind the fact that there was a mannequin in place of the actress oh now they're concerned for her safety after offering her up as a sex worker some inconsistency here but i have serious doubts of whether the monte carlo would have survived the jump in being so intact it's hollywood so we have to let that slide but the rest of the race is just something that never happens the next thing that kind of didn't sit well with me the part where sean finally meets his dad was interesting shawn's dad is a navy officer yet people call him major there's no rank of major in the navy the navy equivalent would be lieutenant commander so maybe he's just a major gaijin or maybe he has a major case of yellow fever and that's how they got the nickname i'm not sure but at one point we even see him in a uniform and his rank is displayed incorrectly that in my opinion is just laziness on the part of the costume department but hey we're so off the rails by this point in time most audiences were just sitting there going where's the drifting that they promised in the film's title next thing he meets up with a character called twinkie how he got this name is anybody's guess but nothing is more in flattering to me than the green turd mobile he drives if twinkie was indeed a military brat his car would have had a y plate to special license plate for family members of military personnel and that wasn't the case so that was an oversight the next thing is drifting in a parking garage uh no that's just wrong and drifting especially in japan drifters prefer wide open spaces which are hard to find in most japanese cities for obvious reasons doing it down by the docks or in rural industrial areas is usually preferred and sometimes if they're close enough they'll just go up to a mountain road so the thought of drifting in a tight garage packed with cement pillars is hollywood sensationalism it's inaccurate it's unrealistic but so so fun to watch on the big screen speaking of inaccuracies let's talk about high school students in japan who generally don't own cars because the legal driving age is 18 and parents would have to sign off on buying a car so the notion that a bunch of high school kids own drift cars that are worth 50 000 bucks or so just isn't remotely realistic but again it's a movie it's not a documentary go with it of course the 800 pound gorilla in the room was the filming locations although the movie was supposed to be set in tokyo 90 of the movie was actually filmed in california and anyone who has ever lived in l.a for a while would recognize several of the locations a quick google search will reveal the locations in fact for example outside the auto shop that's supposed to be in tokyo we can see the support columns of the sixth street bridge in los angeles clearly visible in the background not being in tokyo though explains why there's virtually no traffic in the streets later in the film when they're going through the the intersection during the drifting scenes surely some of you realize that when han and sean are doing donuts and screaming through intersections that the streets maybe looked a little unusually empty but while i'm on the topic of tokyo i wanted to address the story about justin lynn almost getting arrested here's how justin lin explained the situation in an article from way way back in 2009 and i'll put in his words when we went to shoot in tokyo it's a very different culture they don't give out filming performance so they're very hard to get we would be setting up a scene and people would just walk right through the set i wanted to shoot in shibuya which is the most crowded place in tokyo the cops they're all so polite so it takes them 10 minutes for them to come over and kick you out they shut us all down and i'd gotten all my shots but i didn't know where they were whether they were going to arrest me or not another guy stepped up from the crew and said i'm the director i found out later that it was his job to take the fall for me he actually went to jail for the night and i'm forever grateful so who was the guy who got arrested i'm glad you asked remember the big dude in the bath house the attendant the big guy he was a hawaiian wrestler named konchiki he was the guy who went to jail for justin that's crazy man uh the part about borrowing a stranger's car so let me get this straight some unknown geizing blows into town meets a very amenable guy named han and suddenly he gets handed the keys to a car easily worth 30 thousand dollars in 2005 money yet no the real sun king might do that he's a cool guy but in real life that's probably not going to happen so let's chalk this up to something that's highly improbable in other words fiction next thing on my list is something i called out while i sat in the theater and this one was great remember the phones we had back in 2005 i personally had a motorola razor the name potato phone comes to mind because the resolution of the photos was horrible and the videos looked like a color version of an etch-a-sketch so the notion that the spectators were streaming videos in a remote canyon back in 2005 is nonsense uh the next thing of course is using an evo drift the evo is all-wheel drive um is anyone in the pro drifting circuit using an all-wheel drive anything not really right rear wheel drive of course is the best choice using an all-wheel drive car for drifting is like making a sumo wrestler the anchorman and the olympic relay race probably not the best choice so the thought that han's character a car expert would choose an eva for a drift car can be chalked up to one thing mitsubishi donated 10 evos to universe it's still not the most logical choice but product placement trumps reality if somebody's giving you a bunch of cars it just makes more sense still hardcore car fans generally like this movie as for the critics rotten tomatoes rated tokyo drip just as bad as too fast too furious with a less impressive 36 percent approval rating this means very little of course but it also means that tokyo drift could match the first movies relatively glowing approval ratio of 53 percent of course you got to take rotten tomatoes with a grain of assault in case you were wondering the highest rated movie in the franchise fast 7 scored an 81 percent approval ultimately in universal eyes justin lin has been able to produce box office numbers that previous directors could never match that's going to wrap it up did you find an error that i missed let me know in the comments below and please don't forget to subscribe we'll see you next time thanks for watching [Music] you
