like we were to that everything is fine and and I'm actually let's do it the story's called William [ __ ] Shatner I first met William Shatner on the set of Star Trek 5 in 1988 I was 16 I've been working on TNG for two years at the time we were enjoying some success with our show and I was very proud of the work that I was doing when I found out that the original series cast would be working and next door to us for two months I was beside myself [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] gee monitor he was still heavily involved in the production of next generation back then and he and I were very good friends when I would pass by his office tour it was not uncommon for him to throw an executive out and invite me in for a visit he knew that I was a fan of the original series he knew that I was more than a little intimidated by these actors he offered it many times to make an introduction but I was declined if I was going to meet these legends of science fiction I was gonna do it on my own for weeks I tried to get up the nerve to introduce myself when I walk from the stage to my dressing room where's my school room I always did it slowly looking in their stage door hoping to catch a glimpse mr. Spock dr. McCoy or maybe even the legendary Captain Kirk the few times they did appear though never find the courage to approach them this went on for six weeks [Music] [Applause] we were gone around our set that I was too chicken to introduce myself to the original series cast and it became something of a joke the crew began to give me some good-natured ribbing about my reluctance next generation was immensely popular at the time and I was still riding high on the success at stand by me which by the way was 25 years ago which is weird because I got that all the cast and crew of next generation who couldn't understand why I was so intimidated by these actors my face was slashed across the cover of every teen magazine imprint from a TV top earner quarterly I was a 16 year old when the chance to meet the original cast of Star Trek why was it intimidated I would let you do the math whatever do while I was sitting outside stage 9 talking with Mandy my costumer they opened the huge stage door across the way and I could see right into the set of Star Trek 5 the large area sort of like a cargo bay and it was filled with extras and equipment it was different from our sets but it was unmistakably the enterprise standing in the middle of it all was really English [Applause] he held us grybyx it like it was a holy book the way he gestured his hands I could tell that he was setting up a shop and discussing with crew I waited for that familiar rush the nerves but it didn't come seeing you there as a director and not Captain Kirk well police it was my moment if I didn't walk over and introduce myself right then it was never gonna happen I was wearing the gray acting Hinson spacesuit unzipped with the sleeves tied around my waist that costume was really uncomfortable and I needed it so I would take the top half off whenever I got a chance because it was a show so I would tie the sleeves around my waist and then I would wear this lightweight fleece jacket with the obligatory Wil Wheaton 216 Batman pin set it up to cover the embarrassing muscle suit the producers maybe wear under [Applause] no no wait for you finish laughing at me which is the name of our Spitz cover band [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] it's going to be such a great second we all more the muscle suit size even michael dorn but I think I was the most traumatized by it I have always been a slight bill nerd without a lot of muscle mass and having to wear all of that Patti did little to improve my fragile teenage self esteem I turned to Mandy and took off my fleece I asked her to sip up my space suit and fasten the collar oh I was gonna corner there and beat William Shatner and I was gonna do a starfish [Applause] to make sure my costume is camera-ready and she wished you good luck I got a high five one of the two students a confident he strode across the stream and I walked into the cargo bay of the enterprise when 7:01 a it took eight steps for my confidence to evaporate surrounded by extras and Starfleet dress standing next to us shuttlecraft William Shatner the director whose immediately transformed into Captain Kirk intergalactic legend I was transformed from Wil Wheaton fellow actor and film industry professionals to will be drooling fanboy and tricky I looked around I guess I blended in well because nobody noticed I turned to make my escape and I walked right into a still photographer who worked on the next generation in our first season Hey well what are you doing here he asked me I swallowed look past into the stage I just I came over you noticed look around I shoveled my feet tried to walk around him - he forgot her safety of my own station [Applause] oh hey why are you coming mr. Sherman [Music] who's mr. Chanin is he standing next to Captain Kirk all I see here is Captain Kirk and service start for the officers on the cargo bay of the enterprise with seven and one a about a hundred years before I was born he lead around me he called out to Captain Kirk hey come here a second my heart began to beat rapidly as he turning Doris Captain Kirk made eye contact with me he gave his book to someone he can to walk in our direction voluntarily straighten my back my muscles tight within seconds and his standing next to us was about my height Kevin Kirk said to me what can I do [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Laughter] Stella target jump didn't save me Billy this is Willie he spurred the cash to the next generation and though he came over here to meet you [Music] [Music] Captain Kirk II looked at me for a long time finally he said so you're the kid on that show my throat and my mouth were dry my palms were sweating yes sir - will he continue to look at me I wiped my hand I thought I'd assumed it I extended it it's really nice to each I said he didn't take my hand what is that your spacesuit yeah oh it's not school it's yours slow lane but it's what they make me wear and understand instance why Simula they tell me stop talking I put my hand down I shake my hand and I long for the comfort of my fleece jacket well he said oh my god he'd asked me a question and I missed it I said what is it you do over there well I'm an acting incident and sometimes I get to drive the spaceship I thought that maybe he would be impressed if he learned that I had already lost several hours at the helm of the all right you can have a driver's license well he said I've never let a kid on a bike Mitch and he walked away [Applause] [Music] Captain James Tiberius Kirk the Starship Enterprise the only person is starting to ever defeat the Kobayashi man who devised the save countless lives the man who took the enterprise to the Genesis planet to return Spock's gotta die the man who I thought was the coolest guy in the galaxy since I was in here it walked away free and in that moment was transformed to william [ __ ] chef I think my good the turn is synced by and still photographer who made the introduction but he had vanished as well thanks dick I walked back to my own stage with my head down careful not to make eye contact with anyone when I got to the entrance I found Mandy and I asked her to unzip my costume so I can put my fleece back on she unzipped the back she said did she get to be William Shatner yeah I said I did one went on I was upset what's wrong she has she had any my fleece well I didn't want to say it out loud because they get out loud would be here he was addicted did she gasps why what happened I told her as I fought back tears and recount that her introduction what an [ __ ] oh I'm so sorry I nodded my head and she gave me ugh I drew a deep breath shrugged my shoulders and I walked back to my trailer where I sat down and cried I had spent weeks getting up the courage to meet in less than five minutes he had insulted and humiliated me he had reduced me from peer to Keon I wore my stupid costume that I needed thinking that it would impress him he actually made fun 15 minutes later the assistant director knocked on my door they were ready for me on the scent I stood up wiped off my face walked into the stage I took my sin on the bridge of the enterprise tini next to brent Spiner so I heard about Shatner [Applause] that was fast yeah I said you know emergency pain right i giggle no uh I didn't know that oh yeah he's father no Baldy up there [Applause] I giggled some more as the sort of adrenaline released itself wow that's pretty bald right and put his hands up on his console the first date he said this is we picture we all focused the camera roll the director called action Patrick anchor comma Freddie Raymond walks to the captain's chair mr. crusher take us out of the mornin to land our motto system looks safe and simple I serve figures danced over the crime of course they editor I think it's so mr. bro I can't free clinic on the dolly travel is the enterprise-d [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] warp speed we had a guy with a melodica that stood on same it was a really good writer that was engaged his contract and I thought why they did that all right great cut new field director said wrong set removing the Observation Lounge for c55 said the first day the actors have ten minutes on my way back to my dressing room the DGA trainee stopped me with Gene Roddenberry would like you to call his office but chattering from the common okay I change direction and I walk to the stage loan my heart began to beat hard again in my chest oh my god Sheena William [ __ ] shattered for over twenty years did she know if she knew that I'm upset bleep [ __ ] shattered maybe she would we have said it me too it's the worst day ever capacity crowd serves No [Applause] and that's the craft services and we'll set up behind the start feel at home in front of ten-forward michael dorn and jonathan frakes we're pouring cups of coffee to hell with him w [Applause] - buffets he calls me - hello - Michael said Shannon took a big shell of the teen idol leave this context cling on forehead Michael in his eyes do you want me to kick his ass the warden actually talked like he wasn't being more but my imaginations I'm telling the story warp it up door no that's okay that's okay thanks Batman no I got your back man I diode sheets office and totally secretary that I was an attorney James call oh he's expecting your call just a second will there were two clicks and Jesus gentle friendly voices in my ear hi they don't know you how are you I'm fine I'm fine listen I understand you've had some words with [Applause] yeah ass [Applause] [Music] I don't want you to move even secretly he says I am proud to have you on my show I don't want you to never forget that she just seemed [ __ ] Shatner was an ass [Applause] [Applause] it's the worst day ever gosh gee the moon thank you under the circumstances it was the best thing to come by - ooh okay okay see then he hung up the phone I began to feel better although a childhood hero it kicked me square in the nuts bunch of people I cared about and respected and all made efforts to put it into perspective I felt loved I felt protected the next day when I got to work there was an envelope on the table in my dresser it was addressed to master will be and it was from the office of Malaysia I looked at it for a minute like it was a bomb carefully set my backpack down looked for wires hidden cameras and open it inside there was a single three by a notecard the Paramount Pictures logo was stamped into the top and blue and William Shatner was standing in the bottom of gold there was a typed message on the car door said do you only find young and then we honored to have you on my bridge indeed Sasori bulls assignment in ink believe me I know that that's the life to make sure the phone ring I chosen dropped the morning cheese but I still shine yesterday it's already here I said I read it to Scooby you are a fine young actor see you later I couldn't cheat Roddenberry the creator of Star Trek the great bird of my Daleks had called William [ __ ] apologize to me of all the wonderful gifts gene gave me over the years and therefore that one it's one of the most fondly remembered because I'm pretty sure that without machines intervention [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause]
