hello there friends welcome back to another episode of generation Tech money is Allan on this channel we often times criticize the Empire's decision to completely decommission the vendor class star destroyer and replace it with the Imperial class Star Destroyer my assessment has always been that the vendor class Star Destroyer was still a relatively new platform for the Republic navy having only served for a maximum of 3 to four years in combat during the Clone Wars they could have been in service for decades more with minimal refitting or upgrades and because these ships were essentially carriers their Force projection capabilities far outweigh the Imperial class star destroyer's own abilities and given the massive challenges the Empire face and governing the Galaxy it seems kind of counterproductive to just scrap your entire fleet of advanced ships the backbone of your Navy and replace them with an untested Fleet but of course I forgot to look into one factor that is incredibly important here it's a factor that the imperial military never talks about because it's fearful that it might look weak and that of course is the cost of such ships you see if you remove all the political ideology from Star Wars the light and dark side of the force you're left with the most powerful driving force in the entire galaxy and that is credits in a lot of ways this video is going to be kind of like my last video where I discussed why maybe the clone troopers weren't such a good idea after all and the Stormtrooper core despite being not as well trained was a better fit for the Empire we didn't go into this as heavily in our last video but basically the Clone Wars bankrupted the galactic Republic in the worst way possible you know the construction of the Republic navy and Clone Army cost unfathomable amounts of credits but much of that had already been prepaid basically Damas Holdings a Sith back lobby group had funneled money to Jedi Master cyod Diaz who was the one who put down that initial purchase offer what the Republic had to foot though was the massive bill for maintaining this military force in a galaxy wide battle something that prior to the Clone Wars it had never truly had a budget for because of the rousan Reformation this was one of the major reasons why Palpatine had to be given emergency Powers when the separate destroyed Army emerged the galactic Senate would have taken ages debating about the approval of funding for such a military and the separators would have gotten halfway to corant before they even got to the first round of voting and so the Republic starts off the war with no money set aside for a military whatsoever it's only through the use of emergency Powers Palpatine is able to lift money from other projects other areas and basically create some kind of fund just to maintain the first few oper operations the gr takes on and despite all of this within a year it was very clear that the Clones in Judi were outgunned and outmanned on almost every front the B1 battle droid might be goofy and not very competent but they were ridiculously cheap to build instead of taking 9 years to grow like a clone a B1 battle droid could be made within a few hours you can replace losses very quickly and so some elements of the Senate would float around the Republic military enhancement bill the bill proposed a budget that would allow for the training of 5 million additional clones and despite fears opposition from more fiscally or peace-mind Senators the bill actually passes one of the main reasons why there was opposition to this bill was because the republic government was already heavily heavily indebted and this is why when the Republic went to the igbc for the loan for the additional clones they gave them an interest rate of 25% I mean guys all my life I don't remember the interest rates the federal interest rates going above like 5% or 10% uh 25% APR is like what you get on a credit card it is just don't do it don't borrow money at that rate and let's say those 5 million clones cost a galactic Republic like a million credits per unit to train the total cost of this program would be around 5 trillion credits at 25% interest we're talking about 1.25 trillion credits in annual interest payments which is just complete Insanity I mean usually when you have a government which is forced to pay such high interest rates uh to to borrow money you have an economy that is dead in the water there's just no ability to to to borrow money to start businesses anywhere and with the galactic Republic in the midst of a war with entire sectors blockaded by enemy warships the high interest rates caused by this war will only further degrade the economic situation in the galaxy and so taking this loan that's kind of a last resort Total War kind of desperation move and a lot of senators within the Republic didn't believe that that's where the Republic was at but let's be honest with Palatine controlling both sides of the war he could have simply just allowed the separatists to win a series of major victories to pressure the populace into paying for this military expansion anyway I me that's kind of the genius of having a controlled opposition struggle and conflict are natural in human order there's no way to really stop it from happening but by hijacking who was creating all that struggle and conflict within the Galaxy Palpatine essentially became all powerful now by the last year of the war Palatine would orchestrate instability within the igbc and use it as an excuse to take over the banking system so that he could ultimately print his own credits and control the currency and I'm sure at the same time he also restructured a lot of the uh you know federal debt that the igpc held and maybe made some more favorable payment schedules after all in Palpatine's mind he's going to be in power for like 10,000 years with that type of longevity and long-term plan and you can really spread out payments that just completely wiped out the debt and claimed you know that the Empire is a separate entity from the Republic I mean you know messing with your banking system is never a good idea for the long term but again Palatine was facing a lot of trouble in the short term Emperor Palatine was facing a legitimate Galactic economic crisis and with the war gone now everyone was suddenly noticing just how destroyed everything was and how terrible their lives had become now when Emperor papan took over you would think that with this newfound piece he would invest more into you know social institutions and build up the economy maybe subsidize portions of U of different Industries in order to give them a boost boost so that they can rebuild but no that's not what Palatine does instead he tries to jump start the entire Galactic economy by carrying out a once in a Thousand-Year industrial reform project that nationalized several different Industries and seiz control of huge portions of the Galaxy's privately run mines and resource extraction sites and made them all public the result was the Empire overnight became one of the largest holders of businesses in the Galaxy they might have been relatively cash poor because of all the mistakes that the galactic Republic Made during the Clone Wars but they were now resource Rich Palatine also now had a great deal of power and control over the economic and Industrial might of the Galaxy you see while palatine's political reform like getting rid of the Imperial Senate and replacing uh you know Governors with moths would occur gradually over time his economic reforms were almost immediate he wanted to create a command economy where the federal government essentially controlled everything the idea was to scale up manufacturing to such a level that building a large military force would be a lot more affordable and Palpatine's nationalization efforts were pretty hostile I mean none of the assets that he seized he paid for he didn't give any compensation to the private companies or owners of mines and and factories that he just took so again the empire was Cash poor but it didn't matter because they had all the blasters and soon they became very asset rich I mean take a look at what happened to the separatist High Council together they represented the owners of the Techno Union the Trade Federation The Intergalactic banking Clans the corporate Alliance the Commerce skill the Corin isolationist League The stal gazan Hive and the hyper Communications cartel the outer imim was sparsely populated and extremely poor the only way the Confederacy invent systems was able to stand up against the Republic was the backing of these massive corporate entities and together they held a sizable chunk of the Galaxy's economic productivity and these individuals had all been duped by Palpatine into resisting the Republic and therefore they suffer the same fate as the Jedi Palatine send darar Vader to clear out the old management so that he could seize all of these companies and their assets for himself and again this was a brilliant move by you know correctly labeling these companies as the perpetrators of this entire Clone War as palatin was essentially allowed to do anything he wanted to them there was not a lot of uh public sympathy for companies like the Techno Union or the you know stal gazin Hive which built all of the Killer Robots that killed so many people suddenly Palpatine's Empire was managing shipyards mines large Factory worlds Transportation companies and much much more this was a far cry from the Republic's much more limited central government now in our last video we talked about how the individual Clone Trooper was Superior to you know his TK Trooper counterpart in almost every way but from a cost perspective and an understanding of the galactic Empire's security needs the TK Troopers made a lot more sense the Empire really needed peacekeeping officers not shock troopers to storm enemy defenses and the vendor class Star Destroyer kind of is in the same situation here being a carrier style assault Cruiser gives the vendor class the ability to maintain control of an entire sector by deploying Patrol flights to nearby systems something that the imperial class St Destroyer could never do with its Tie fighters on board the Imperial class Star Destroyer instead relies on its Mighty Banks of tural lasers for Firepower it's a more archaic and brutal way of fighting its biggest limitation unlike the Vador class Star Destroyer is that the ISD has to engage enemies at line of sight distances this is something you've heard me say many times but I realize that putting the istd and the vor's combat capabilities up against each other is kind of meaningless right Palatine didn't really have any threats to fight against the Clone Wars was orchestrated by him and with the destruction of the separators the Imperial Navy was supposed to just serve as a visual deterrent for unrest and so once again what we're looking here is the retirement of this rep public symbol is not just a political move but it's also an economic move the Imperial class starter story did cost a lot of money perhaps even more than a venator to built and I remember one imperial Governor named everyy chalice who is a logistics expert um claiming that the imperial class Star Destroyer was one of the most resource intensive ships in the entire fleet from a maintenance and operating perspective while the I is quite expensive the vendor class Star Destroyer was also ridiculously expensive to run an ISD costs a lot to run because of the large crew and fuel consumption but think about it the Munitions it uses for its turbo lasers is dirt cheap it's just gas turbo lasers require a lot of energy but it's not like missile launchers where you need actual Munitions being manufactured then you have the Tie fighters on board which are some of the lowest maintenance star fighters ever created thanks to the twin ion engine design that has zero moving Parts none of those ships are hyperdrive equipped or have heavy weapons either and so the real cost of the ISD you know is two things it's Manpower and and Fuel and these are two things that the Empire has a lot of and is more than willing to use I mean after all what is the most dangerous thing left behind after a war it's not an unexploded Munitions it's a lot of soldiers who now do not have a job this is the situation that the Empire faced after the Clone Wars even the most powerful dictators cannot ignore military veterans especially if they are well organized you see creating the Imperial military was not only a political necessity for his new order but also an economic and social solution designed to make a huge portion of the Galaxy more disciplined and unrolled within the imperial system where Emperor palatin can monitor and control every one of their movements so when you take a look at a platform like the venor class Star Destroyer it is basically the Clone Trooper of capital ships it's excellent at its job it goes above and beyond when it comes to capabilities but ultimately it's probably too much of a ship for an Empire that spends most of its time chasing down Bandits and Pirates we're not exactly sure how much it costs to operate a vendor class Star Destroyer but I wouldn't be surprised if it cost more than an ISD the ship might be smaller but its design is very Innovative and kind of crazy for instance it has this gigantic movable hanger door that stretches the length of the ship almost which is close to 1,000 M long and that's like having several retractable football stadium roofs stacked back to back and those things cost each like you know a few hundred million dollars and it cost them a few thousand dollar every time they open and close it this is a very serious piece of machinery and cost a lot to maintain and each one of these venor class star Shores had them on board and this ridiculously large hanger door only exists because inside of a Vador is basically one large hanger and assembly area that can hold as many Star Fighters as a major air base the V CL Star St might have less Firepower than ISD but he could carry on board in excess of 400 star Fighters along with entire squadrons of drop ships atte Walkers and thousands of clones and these starfight Fighters weren't like the Tie fighters mind you they were far more complicated in specialized craft some were equipped internally with hyperdrives others could use deployed hyperdrive Rings The Empire starf fighter Doctrine would go in a complete opposite direction no hyperdrives means a lot cheaper cost for manufacturing and maintenance and also it makes it much harder for Pilots to defect a VOR class starter sh would be extremely intimidating if it had 400 Tie fighters on board but again these Tie fighters are not welld designed for this capital ship because a vendor class Star Destroyer has to stay far away from its enemies it uses its long range Fighters as a buffer and the Tie fighters are just short-range interceptors the vender class stti sh is not only a poor fit for Imperial starf fighter Doctrine it also was very costly to maintain using starf Fighters instead of Turbo lasers as your main source of offensive attack is going to be much more effective but much more costly in the long run you're going to need maintenance Crews spare parts specialized Munitions for your ships and the works and so basically this was the situation that Palpatine faced he had an excellent Navy an excellent Army one of the finest the Galaxy had ever seen but without a word the enemy to face Palpatine realized that the Grand Army of the Republic was one gigantic Money Pit the Empire could not afford to maintain a huge Fleet of essentially aircraft carriers especially when you had no enemies to fight in palatine's mindset credits are far better spent in building an entire new Fleet and that's because the construction of a 1.6 km long Imperial class Star Destroyer is essentially an economic stimulus if your planet or local Shipyard has been contracted to build just one of these things or even subcontracted to build a component on one of these ships you're looking at a ton of money entering the system and that can lead to tens if not hundreds of thousands of jobs and lift up entire regions from poverty the Imperial class Star Destroyer is not state-of-the-art it relies on archaic technology and Designs what it is is very intensive when it comes to resources and man ARS for construction as we mentioned before which makes me think that this project project was most likely just a busy project to keep people occupied it's essentially a fake job you know one time I was at the uh airport in Tokyo Norita and I was standing in the duty free section my wife was shopping and I watched as one salesperson continuously rearranged a bottle of perfume from one side of a shelf to another now if you had just been walking by her you would not have noticed that she was basically doing just nonsense but since I was being creepy and just standing and there had nothing to do I realized that this person's job was pretty much redundant she didn't really do anything you'll notice a lot of these kind of jobs in high population countries take India for instance when you enter the airport of Mumbai you you have to get check for your passport like four times before you even reach the check en counter now maybe one or two of those extra layers of uh checking is good for security but a lot of this is just you know a way for the government to hire and employ more people so that they have something to do simply put when enough of your population is sitting at home without guidance and structure disaster generally follows especially when it's us guys standing around doing nothing you know we can go from being a normal socialized professional to a Mad Max style Anarchist who's running around attacking motorists with homemade weapons while huffing spray paint I mean seriously for all you guys at work right now that uniform or shirt and tie you're wearing is nonsense I don't buy it you don't give a about what Janet did last weekend with her rabbits the true you is the person you become when you go home and turn on the PlayStation and play a little hell divers 2 and you call in an orbital strike on you and the boys because managed democracy is the tits no matter how much we pretend human beings we're all just monkeys and without the proper structure we would tear it all down just out of amusement and adrenaline and so guys remember nothing is more dangerous than a man with nothing constructive or positive to do and this is the other perhaps less discussed reason why dictators like Palatine go on massive military spending frenzies and build unnecessarily large ships and buildings yes Palpatine probably has a small PP but he's also trying to make sure that the masses don't rise up and eat his wrinkly scrotum face alive it's a weird way of saying things and lastly scrapping a VOR class ST cost the Empire very little heck they could even sell these ships to Worlds like broa and the Salvage teams there can make loot stripping these ships of components and raw resources and sell them right back to the Imperial military industrial complex I recently read an article that the US Navy Once Sold an aircraft carrier to a scrapyard for like 1 cent and that's because like the scrapyard can make a lot of money on all the components and and and metal that's stripped from these things it's like you know those guys who work for uh the junk removal uh companies yes you pay them money to remove junk but then they also take that junk and then they sell the metal to people and they make additional loot that's how it works an added bonus for scrapping the entire Republic Fleet is that it would take decades literally in Andor they're still doing it and it's like 5 years before the Battle of Yavin and so this project would create Millions upon millions of jobs and keep even more potentially dangerous people occupied I mean the entire economy on fer has evolved around decommissioning Vador class Star Destroyers and so if you are going to have to build an entire new Navy because you want to create jobs you know scrapping your Old Navy is going to be a lot cheaper than keeping those ships in storage right I mean how do you even store a 1,000 M long vessel with a fusion reactor inside of it anyway and so as you can see it wasn't really a military decision to replace the V class Star Destroyer with the Imperial class Star Destroyer as a matter of fact I'm sure the generals or the Admirals in the Navy were pissed off when this happened this is a complete financial and political move by Palpatine it's another way he's managed to maintain power and control and just shows us when Palatine is really clicking where when when when he's forced to govern he does an excellent job or at least he knows how to manipulate things to create the outcomes that he wants it's only when he gains complete control of everything that things Begin to Fall Apart well guys I hope you enjoyed today's video don't forget to subscribe and hit that notification button down below
