[Music] in this video I will discuss why the mercedes-amg m113 k engine is such a respected platform powering a generation of AMG performance cars we'll start by looking at the different variations of the Mercedes m113 engine such as the Mercedes 5-liter the AMG 5.5 liter and the AMG 5.5 supercharged otherwise known as the v8 compressor cars so to start the base m113 engine is a 5 liter v8 which came in cars like the SL 5 under the CL 500 and the e 500 it features an aluminum engine block with aluminum single overhead cam cylinder heads it features 3 valves per cylinder and two spark plugs per cylinder it also featured fracture split forged steel connecting rods and in most cars this engine came with 302 horsepower and 339 pound-feet of torque for the AMG m113 engine found in cars like the W 210 a 55 AMG stroked the Mercedes 5 liter engine to a larger 5.4 4 liter displacement using connecting rod journals that were four millimeters further from the center of the forged AMG crankshaft piston stroke was increased in 92 millimeters up from 86 millimeters on the original Mercedes 5 liter the connecting rods were also strengthened AMG additionally reworked the cylinder heads with a lighter weight camshafts that had a longer duration above stiffer valve springs they also added a larger intake manifold and improved exhaust flow finally they hand assembled these engines in a photobook Germany the AMG m113 engines range from 342 horsepower to 367 horsepower and 376 pound-feet of torque to 391 changes in power for the naturally aspirated AMG m113 engines were due to a compression ratio increase from 10 a half to one to eleven to one for the later cars that featured this engine now on to the AMG and 113k this came in cars like the W 211 e55 CL 55 and the SL 55 this engine featured a 2.1 liter twin-screw supercharger and air to water integral it features an electric mechanically actuated clutch on the supercharger pulley it also featured a recirculation flap that bypasses the supercharger when it's not running the supercharger provides a maximum boost pressure of 11.6 psi now with the m113 key engine it wasn't just a supercharger that was added there were plenty of other changes the compression ratio of the m113 k was lowered to 9 to 1 instead of the 11 to 1 in the naturally aspirated cars and that was to accommodate the boost pressure the m113 K engines also received stronger connecting rods due to the elimination of oil imports the wrist bends on the pistons on the m113 K are also significantly stronger when compared to the naturally aspirated cars the m113 K heads are also different as they have a bigger volume around the valves compared to that of the naturally aspirated m113 engine therefore it is not possible to simply add a supercharger from the m113 k to the naturally aspirated and 1:13 engines and that is because there are so many other changes with the engine that support the stress of super charging the m113 k does not have very sophisticated heads or variable cam timing but this adds to the reliability of the engine what is sophisticated is the supercharger unit when the m113 k engine came out he was selected as the best performance engine of the year for 2003 by engine technology international magazine this was a record-setting platform as the SL 55 was the fastest convertible upon release and the e55 was the fastest sedan upon release most m113 que engines were rated at 493 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque from Mercedes making them some of the most powerful v8 engines in existence at the time in fact the m113 K engine basically had the same power and torque as the 8.3 liter v10 in the 2003 Dodge Viper but available over a wider rev range with the m113 K engine there were different quoted power levels from Mercedes ranging from 469 horsepower to 510 horsepower starting with the 469 number this was largely a marketing ploy for the smaller cars in the range such as the e55 the engine output of the e55 is identical to that in the more expensive cars such as the s 55 CL 55 and SL 55 Mercedes just rated the e55 lower because it didn't want to reduce the appeal of the more expensive parts now it has been said that the SL 55 has a slightly different exhaust system and a slightly different intake snorkel compared to the e55 which could provide a few more horsepower but definitely not 24 Paul and 113k engines are actually based at 493 horsepower at the crank however for 2007 and newer Mercedes did increase the power rating for the SL 55 to 510 horsepower and 530 pump feet of torque this was due to the installation of a larger 80 millimeter throttle body and a revised intake compared to the 74 millimeter throttle body in the older and 113k cars some other differences with these engines between the cars they were in or that the oil pans were different the e55 CLS 55 and SL 55 have chambered oil pens with two sumps and to drain bolts to accommodate the subframe which would go up in between it the s 55 and cl 55 have simple oil pans with only one drain bolt at the front around 2005 the supercharger units were upgraded across the board with these cars and they provided a little bit extra boost but the official power figures remained unchanged at the time due to the stout nature of the m113 k engine is common for it to be tuned for more power without too much difficulty swapping out for a smaller supercharger pulley adding better flowing headers and tuning the engine can result in more than 600 crank horsepower when paired with good cooling upgrades such as an upgraded intercooler pump and a bigger front mount intercooler the m113 K pistons and connecting rods are known to be able to safely handle over 18 psi of boost in harsh conditions with these supporting modifications the m113 K engine is known to be a strong and reliable performer with no major flaws that are common it is definitely a favorite among AMG enthusiasts for it's very smooth and torque every character in some cases these engines have gone well over 500,000 kilometers and still run well despite their high performance capability next we will move on to a few m113 k issues there are only a few to discuss but they are notable the most common issue is with the supercharger not being activated due to high values on the charge of air temperature sensor supercharged cars generate a lot of heat and if the original intercooler pump does not flow properly the car will feel sluggish as the supercharger is deactivated on a stock car this can be alleviated by an upgraded intercooler pumps such as the bosch or zero one zero now one's modified cooling is a very important factor for these engines another shortcoming of this engine is that it does not utilize an oil pressure sensor has pointed out by the awesome channel sk8 to15 the e55 CLS 55 and SL 55 have a rubber o-ring on the oil collector pipe in one of their oil pans sumps which could potentially cause a loss in oil pressure if the rubber deteriorates although this is a rare case the CL 55 and s 55 don't have the same to chamber oil pan as the other cars but nevertheless adding an oil pressure sensor to any m113 engine doesn't hurt and SK 81 5 has a video on that that way you would know before any damage is potentially caused to the engine but again these cases are very rare a less important but still common issue is oil we pitch coming from the valve cover gaskets on these engines it's often a cosmetic issue that attracts dirt from a small coating of oil and it's a relatively easy fix with new valve cover gaskets other common things with this engine are supercharger pulley bearings and generally the other pulleys on the engine wearing out over time the new grumbling noise are squeaking again easily fixed by replacement overall the m113 k engine is one of the best engines produced by Mercedes and AMG and will continue to reliably power the 55 v8 compressor cars for many miles and enthusiast enjoyment thanks for watching and if you like videos like this be sure to leave a thumbs up and subscribe for more videos
