all right i'm allen k and this is frank with knives by hand he's a good friend of mine i've known him for several years and i've been using his cookies for a few years so uh tell us like what is the quintessential cookery well i'm going to talk about the cookies of old i have a couple of authentic creepers with me right now you can see the nepalese riding this this cookie is over 100 years old i just want you to see it notice the spine stickies which which language is this is that nepalese that's hindi so what is it about a cookery that sets it apart from other knives well the cookie has a chopping blade it's not a stabbing glaze chopping blade it's got a curved top big belly so when it hits when it hits it cuts and bites in so that's not a flat hit it'll actually hit and saw down as you strike so it actually gives you a deeper cut a lot of heads were taken to this a lot of throats were touched now which allen's a big fan of it nothing like a decapitation first thing in the morning later in the 80s when i was in the military they started issuing the lighter rifles and they started issuing lighter lighter creepers and they would issue this it's a bsi or mark v this is the type of cooper they would issue they come in all sizes and shapes kind of like bowie knives crookers would come pretty big fairly large the thickness of the blade yes let's get that in scale here okay that's a half inch thick easy yes so all these knives are made by hand all these are made by hand nine percent of my stuff is made in nepal uh temperature of the knives i make here's my krueger which i did one that you made yes this is a modart osage handle i did a couple of these for some kids of them like he wanted one for his son so i did one for them and the sheath is beautiful too and it comes with a side knife cool yeah that's kind of a typical thing yeah small knife yes and they will actually come they actually come with a sharpened knife or a honing knife this one's not sharp this is a honing knife what they would do in the field is they will hone their edge that's primarily what it was for but also when i was with them in 80s they actually used it as a fork around the campfire they would do it like this yeah because they won't cut you now the other one's got a sharpened edge so you got to be careful you pick the right one get them mixed up in the dark yeah i need something like this in my kitchen yeah like a small paring knife you know like the butter your bread yeah yeah it is sharp so you know yeah so so tell us about this like is this a an actual on new year's they have a ceremony on new year's day where they they cut the head off an animal cow and they'll be headed i've got a couple pictures of their own shows but and they have to do it in one shop have to ensure they have a good years or that's their thing and so they want to make sure that it works they have one swing at it so they make a blade for that just just to be able to cut off them so that's not just for show that's an actual yeah they use it once a year and that guy will practice with it so when he goes out there in front of everybody what do you practice on that's right they usually use um goats and pigs they do they do beforehand beforehand that'd be a bad day for the guy to catch a cramp yeah like oh i'll just halfway through now the whole year is cursed right yeah go to a new building and of course it does come with the standard they only had to cut down two trees to make this easier the small knives that come with it this one two small knives you know that's like half a cow hide right there and a belt loop oh and a belt i actually sold one to a guy who's like seven feet tall and he put it on his hip that's good i think that would be that'd make a good knife yeah in here is usually a hindu symbol i put more of a cross in there yeah because this is designed based off mine allen was telling me a little bit about that here what are your theories on why that needs to be there there are different because it comes in different variations during doing the war when they were working for britain they they put this in there because they were a member of the british army supposed to be the british crown traditionally at show you will see this style and there's and no one agrees on what they all agree on one thing it's a religious symbol of the gurkhas the hindu so they all agree on one thing some say it's the trident of shiva the shiva is actually holding a trident and some say it's a cow's foot but they don't so no one actually has agreed upon i kind of think it's the trident of shiva myself but no real functional purpose other than they put this in actually it kind of gives it a shock absorber because this part i don't know if you can see right here the metal is a little different here but you can kind of see the lines right there yeah it's a little softer in this in this spot than it is the rest of it the hardness is a little bit less here and that's because of a knife to break some chopping this is where it's going to break and this actually acts a little bit as a shopping builder they're all really robust aren't they yes really strong i guarantee you all my knives are guaranteed so you have any issues i've had people returning because the wife found out they fit more than a hundred dollars on a knife and not refunded the money but these these aren't overly priced these are not no i was actually surprised i would expect you know for that type of fit and finish you know much more than in the afternoon like what is your what does the kukri like this one go for 140 bucks pull that out it's unreal just look at the craftsmanship in the sheath alone just the sheet yeah look at that yeah it's beautiful this ridge right here is the old style nepalese and that locks your fingers in so you can't slide up so that would actually help if you had to thrust correct with the weapon correct if you have you've had to stab with it i'm going to tell a story of a gurkha not too long ago about five years ago and the race would be our scouts the taliban was in afghanistan and he was told they were told to go bring back a body part as evidence go back dna souvenirs yeah they said bring back dna is what they told evidence they don't have a word for dna in nepalese so it translates the body part so they were bringing the whole body back and they got they got trapped they had to get out of there so they took his head off and put it in a bag and you can look this up it's on it's in the news you can look up gurkha beheads taliban you can look that up and the story will come up well they took his head put in a bag and went back to the british and said we've got him and dumped it out on the desk there's your dna they had dental records teeth are in there they had to fly him out of afghanistan because that's a war crime wow yeah vandy get him on a plane and get him out to gotta get you out of here miscommunication this communication there's an over achiever you're gonna use something like this for you something like this and they do it in one stroke i'm sure one stroke and you work with those guys in that understanding back in the 80s i worked with some they were our scouts for the most part i was a forward observer so i did a lot of this that's pretty much it there they are um he's being humble for deserver is a very hard job like yeah you got to be ninja to do that but where do people find you what's your website knivesbyhand.com k-n-i-v-e-s it's knives by hand so it's knivesbyhand.com no space if you find me i'm out of texas pop cattle mills population 1400 very small town my neighbor raises angus cows very cool pretty cool awesome thank you thank you very much good talking to you but i appreciate it had this one for a while i actually used this one obviously you clear brush with that oh yeah i built a whole fence with it you know out of brush i cut trees down but i like the uh the kydex sheath you know this is a designed matte tape with american survival he did that for me i just i love it you can wear it here you can get it with either hand you can sit down stand up if you want to switch to tech lock you wear it smaller your back if you're going to be laying prone a lot like military guys it's reversible i just like that and i wrapped it in hockey tape because it's real shiny and in the woods you know it was too blingy for what i was doing but this is my every day that's the one i use it's basically like a sharpened crowbar you're not going to hurt it yeah i mean nearly half an inch of steel right there yep you're not gonna break it yeah man very cool that's the one
