[Music] oh yeah [Music] foreign it's too hard on a jazz bass so that track was Jack oper stories with weather report playing Team town and this is our video about how the Jazz Bass oh this bass right here is the ultimate base when you put the jazz bass up against any other base for me even though I'm sitting here with a B base I think it wins really really because you can just do so much stuff with that you can't it is very versatile although I have to say it's a bit of a flex to show up on a channel and play teen town at like 500 BPM on a p Bass with Flats let me get rid of the P Bass okay come on jazz bass here a little bit different to Ian's this is a 70s we think it's a 74 and this is an Oliva coppolo I'm not sure I'm pronouncing that right and is uh it's pretty new but the the big difference is that this has got an active circuit in it so it's a little bit brighter sounding and this video what we're going to do is we're going to look at all of the different sounds that you can get from a jazz bass when I think about a jazz bass typically I think about two main sounds actually I'd be interesting to hear from you guys in the comments as well what when you think about a jazz bass do you think about immediately yeah what do you think about before I say I might want to know if it's the same I think about both pickups on sort of scooped mid-range sound I think about it as like a slap who though I don't know I guess it maybe like Marcus yeah [Music] yeah it's like the active jazz bass both pickups on full yeah some bass boost that is sort of the sound that I think of even though Jocko so seminal that bridge pickup sound yeah but that's the thing the Jazz Bass is so versatile it can get more sounds than you think it can yeah exactly so like for me it's definitely Marcus Miller and then the other one is Jacko who we were just trying to play along with and for the Jacko sound if you've got a jazz bass how do you get that to get that the ultimate Jacko sound essentially you're just rolling off your neck pickup to the bridge pickup playing over the bridge pickup yeah and Jocko of course known for that fast furious 16th note Funk but also harmonics right yeah right yeah and that is really a jazz bass thing because with a p bass it's hard to get the harmonics to pop like that so that bridge pickup sound is so jazz bass yeah because on a on a jazz bass you've got two pickups you've got the bridge pickup as Ian was saying that gives you that that Jacko thing and then you can have both on at the same time gives you the Marcus thing and then you've got the neck pickup as well yeah which you this is actually your favorite tone it's my favorite sound of all time actually is just a jazz bass rolled with a bridge pickup rolled back a bit with a pick I love it it sort of sounds like a p bass to me yeah it's in that ballpark is it yeah yeah I love that sound and if you stick around as well at the end of this video Ian's going to show you this trick that you showed me before I've been playing bass for 30 years and he was like oh do you know the reggae tone trick on a jazz bass and I was like oh whatever so as I was talking about you've got these you know two like a volume volume tone there's something you can do in with these you said it blew your mind it blew my mind yeah it blew my mind and should we just take them through all of the different you know the sounds because obviously we kicked this thing off with Jacko what we've done in this video is kind of like a selection we've got seven uh videos here to show you of players that have a completely different sound but they're all using fundamentally the same bass yeah right right so this is a great clip of gedily you'd be Wicked for you to get into how he gets this tone not for sure from a sort of like a an amp perspective but more from like a technique perspective absolutely because it's completely different check this out foreign [Music] So Different yeah completely different from Jaco or Marcus so what's going on there Getty typically I think is using both pickups on full he's using some drive but don't get caught in the weeds of that the thing about Getty sound is he's not playing this way he's [Music] he's smashing the base yeah [Music] right up here yeah so see what Ian's doing here with you right just show them just like playing one string what you're doing there like he's going all the way through the string it's not it's not like it's no yeah it's an aggressive strike [Music] yeah all the way through and also not playing over the bridge pickup because if you played the bridge pickup it sound completely different oh yeah it would almost sound more like jockoey right yeah but you want you want that snap of the string now the next person we've got up is Larry grab Graham Central Station is the band the track is hair that we have got none of by the way and the first time I heard this I freaked out it was like one of the best drifts but again it's a great representation of the Jazz Bass tone and it sounds completely different yeah and it's very vintage this is like maybe old round rounds this is not a bright sounding Jazz maybe flat maybe yeah good question does anybody know let us know in the comments if you know whether this was flats or not check out this [Music] um yeah [Music] and he's singing it's so cool [Music] how's it how's it doing that what's the vibe yeah or maybe like a slide into the [Music] I was moving from a tonal perspective like it's definitely not it's an active Jazz no and this even is too bright yeah or maybe if you're trying to get that like legit Larry Graham thing you roll off tone a little bit is it scooped though like a hot yeah it does not Bridge pickup is it maybe a little bit of neck pickup it's not that fat yes yeah huge right I don't know what it is let us know yeah yeah and if you want to play it Scott can we play this yeah yeah let's do it let's do it two three uh oh [Music] [Music] hey we've actually got the tavern notation for some of this stuff as well that you're watching today so if you want it you can get it from the link in the description below now the next person we've got for you is another uh another slapper maybe the the famous slap baser the most famous slap bait I'm just trying to I mean yeah when you ask me I this is the guy that I thought of right away for like jazz bass sound I was my mind went to Marcus Miller yeah could be our age you know what I mean right maybe I mean if Larry has a vintage sound yeah Marcus is the opposite he's he's got this sound it's like an active jazz bass it was a it's a fender isn't it yeah fender with the sadoski Circa 77 yeah here is this is called Run for Cover David Sanborn um and Marcus it's for me like if somebody was like I really want to check out Marcus Miller which which track should I check out there's only one video clip that's going in this video and it's this one check it out oh [Music] totally different than I regret yeah totally [Music] how young he is [Music] that's great [Music] [Music] I'll take you through the beginning of that riff so that's the first part of it [Music] um [Music] okay and then it's so I'm gonna start a bit even further down so [Music] yes yes [Music] thank you oh what is that what is that that last bit is so B yeah Hammer onto the C sharp open G for the lower G oh and then the wait yeah except he's going [Music] so he's got both pickups wide open [Music] okay tone wide open as well and on this base I've got the Boost the bass boosted a little bit probably about 50 because this is an active bass like Marcus bass and then I've got the treble boosted as well a bit so if I turn it all the way down the circuit [Music] not that same like muscular [Music] boost That Bass yeah thumps treble [Music] right [Music] and while you can totally play this line on a passive base not the same sound yeah not even close like there's that scoop I kind of you like to you like I like the Vintage bass I do yeah I mean I do too but it's not Marcus's sound and these strings are dead as well the bean yeah they've been cheated by a dinosaur next up do it oh yeah where is it oh it's right here on here all along dude okay so Bobby if you haven't heard of Bobby is a legendary bass player among the bass community and has played you know huge career and his thing is that makes me stand out is well first of all he's sort of like probably the funkiest man on the planet secondly he plays with a pit does it all with a pick why is it all with a pen yeah man check this out this is a fantastic fantastic clip [Music] playing some Tower Power here yeah he got the gig that's right he played with Tower [Music] so good this is an early 60s jazz bass and it's got the concentric tone and volumes hasn't it going on so I'm not sure what he's going like if he's got like you know the both pickups wide on them I feel like he's almost always playing both pickups on full yeah not turning the tone knobs down on a lot of these bases too he switched to emg's so sometimes they're very bright yeah but the thing about Bobby I think more importantly than the sound is just getting a sense of his pick thing yeah and it's a straight 16th note thing with an accent on a halftime back beat that is the biggest thing so he's playing [Music] yeah it's a snare so if we speed it up even a little more right if we're here [Music] yeah so then if you put notes in it [Music] [Music] [Music] yeah the trick is to get that yes and he is really hammering the back beat like hit that back being even harder with your pick yes and he's really dropping down on the base I need loose as well like the hands loose even though Ian's like he's he's hitting it right but it's really like a loose movement as well [Music] thank you [Music] okay so for you guys that have been waiting for the the reggae trick yeah we're gonna do it check it out right Aston Family Man Barrett yeah [Music] Bob Marley and the Wailers this is a you'd never associate this sound with the Jazz Bass right until now [Music] sorry [Music] excuse me [Music] [Music] put both of these on okay because it's the the stuff going on down here that yeah he's doing sneaky stuff I learned about this from Daniel anwa who uh has made some great records and he talks about this technique where like say you want a dark sound on a jazz bass and maybe you don't have 40 year old strings on it like like Aston might right and maybe you don't have foam how do you get like a really dark subby jazz bass sound well like a dub Vibe yeah blend all the way and you just have neck pickup right that's not quite right now what if I take the tone off it's still kind of want very good it's still not quite right so check this out neck all the way up yeah Bridge all the way off yes tone all the way off yes yeah and then check this out if you tap a note you just roll that first volume knob back [Music] are you moving it back like five mil just like a little just to wear it almost darkenses and that's the volume not the tone he's he's moving the volume back so Bridge all the way off tone all the way off neck all the way up and then you get that neck pick up and dial it back until the tone just goes and what happens because it's passive it doesn't work it doesn't work on this check it out weird right so we've got um so this is just neck all the way up yep [Music] oh maybe it does work that's sweet yes do you hear it really hear it on this bass too which is cool that's it I didn't think it worked on an active base it's great you got to do the left on mute right yeah for sure so I'm using the left on music yeah and then what I'm doing too is because you lose a bunch of volume when you do it you just compensate yeah you just compensate with a bit of volume and then you have foreign [Music] [Music] mute by the way is armed I'm playing the thing I'm playing the Fret [Music] and then I'm laying these fingers on the actual stream but not so much I'm fretting the note it's right [Music] Michelle and degio cello is one of my favorite bass players of all time she was playing a jazz bass when everyone was doing the bright jazz bass thing in the 90s she was leaning a little darker like her sound was sometimes like old rounds or maybe even Flats on a jazz bass and I'd never heard that before this clip is pretty bright but this just shows the monstrosity of a player that she is like she starts this tune with more conviction than I've ever seen a bass player start a tune it's one of my favorite things on the internet yeah yeah we've got two we've got two tracks actually here's the first one check it out thank you [Music] thank you though yeah oh table yourself thank you [Music] it's weird to feel where the one is right oh it is and then Lastly lastly is greasy G to ECG by Joshua Redmond which is again her bass playing on this is just outlandish and and so great but we're gonna take the video out on a clip from this track foreign [Music] this is like the if something was like what's behind the beat it's like oh listen to this Michelle yeah with the drums on it though yeah [Music]
