so one of the biggest complaints I've seen from C8 owners is that the rear trunk area just behind the engine gets very hot there are kits out there to fix this issue uh but I can do one better this is definitely a DIY type modification that you can do in about a half hour so I will link some products below that you'll need for this project but we're going to start off I'm going to take this apart for you so you can see what I've done already and what I'm going to add to it so first thing you're going to do is remove your cargo net if you have a cargo net get that bad boy out of here so you're going to remove the hard top mounts inside the trunk area the size is a T15 Torx you don't have to use power tool I use power tool all over this car the only thing I would worry about is when you are re-tightening these you may not want to use power tools because you can break the heads off on the t15s we got our first one off I'm just gonna set it up there second one off so then down here you're going to remove these plastic on a cargo net attachment points we're going to remove one from each side just Lefty Loosey on these guys come right off so then you're going to pull your carpet if this is your first time pulling your carpet it might get hung up on the the rubber Water Seal all I do with it anytime I work back here if you're changing air filter or doing anything with your exhaust and you have to remove this hatch is I push down on the carpet underneath the hood latch pull up here and just kind of tuck it back kind of out of the way so should you still have to hold it back but it'll be way easier to work with so basically the problem here is there's no thermal blanket or insulation between the engine bay and this air box cover so what happens is the heat can just kind of steady flow through this panel through the carpet right into your trunk area where you know maybe you get stuck putting groceries one day on your way home so the solution is to either remove this cover and put something on the inside of it or and I've seen kits online which I think they're kind of pricey for what you're paying for or you put some kind of insulation or thermal barrier on the inside so I'm going to remove these 18 T15 Bolts real quick and I'm going to show you what I've done and I'm actually going to add on top of it all right so once you have all your bolts out and you pull your your cover back I can show you so this is literally your engine bay here this is the air box if I stick my hand through here I can feel the heat from the engine right now so I've already done something to my cover so this Factory thermal blanket or material here is throughout the entire engine bay but for whatever reason GM probably to save weight honestly they only put it down here and and that's okay there's nothing wrong with the car it's just some of us want to put groceries in the back sometimes if our wife tells us she needs you know a dairy product on our way home so what I've already done is I've put kill mat here and kill Matt uh can sort of serve as a thermal barrier but mostly as a an insulation barrier so you use kill mat to dampen sound for like audio installs but there's one other thing you can add you can add a reflective blanket now this is from Dei and it has an adhesive on one side of it so what I'm actually going to do is I'm actually going to add more kill mat uh here this this part faces down towards the engine bay I'm going to add a little bit more kill mat here and then I'm going to cover all of it with the Dei gold wrap this is on the inside of the engine bay if you want to take it a step further you could actually do the entire inside of the trunk so the outside of this cover and then the areas around the roof mount and it it what I've already done has reduced the temperatures back here but it should make it a normal trunk temperatures I should say just by adding these to it all right so take your kill mat and cut it to size the actual size and you can piece it together it just cuts with normal scissors it's foil lined on one side and it has an adhesive material or an adhesive back so then you just kind of place it where you want and I would make sure the surface is nice and clean and then you just push down with some pressure kilman actually has a little roller you can roll this on but I just do it by hand the only thing I'd say be careful of is the foil can be kind of sharp on the edges so just be careful pushing around there I've cut these side pieces as well I'm going to go ahead and put those on there and while this is great at insulating we'll see look I misjudged this here I'm gonna cut the corner off basically I don't want it to overlap this this seal here that goes to the the engine compartment and then for this side we'll probably end up doing the same thing we'll cut the corner off now I don't think this is necessarily needed I notice a difference with a little bit I had but as we know heat rises so in this case this is the top of this cover facing the engine so I kind of want to just for extra insurance mental insurance that and I wanted to film this so I figured I would add some more to it all right so what I went ahead and did is I cut out the Dei wrap I did 30 inches by 14 inches and that accounts for the curvature of the inside of this cover what I'm going to do is I'm going to use the sticky side of this and I'm gonna attach it to the Dei wrap actually I'm going to use the sticky side of the Dei wrap and attach it to the kill mat I'm actually going to start up top and as long as you don't put too much pressure on this you should be able to pull it up to center it I always press from the center anyways it's okay if there's a little bit of wrinkles in it because we are definitely a function over form here and I cut this excess off so it doesn't overlap seal so we have our insulation vei wrap over the top of it and it looks great I mean it doesn't look great it looks okay but like I said we're function over form here we're just trying to reduce our temperatures you can do this for about a third of what the kits cost I will link everything in the description reassemble everything put it together if you wanted to go one step further you could take the kill mat and you could cover this entire cover uh minus where the bolts Go cover it to create a another layer of insulation and then I would insulate the area right here just below where the the top locks in that would be if you wanted to make sure that you know it stays nice and cool so that's it quick easy cheap mod if you enjoy this type of content these how-to guides please like the video hit that subscribe button I got a ton of other how-to guides for you thank you
