is Ice Cube East or West Coast West Coast baby I am the West Coast warlord imagine leaving one of the hottest rap groups of all time at the height of their success Ice Cube did just that when he walked away from NWA and sparked a lifelong Feud with Easy E and Jerry hel with all the controversies between the former friends we have to ask why was NWA so scared of Ice Cube early life the CIA and working with Dr Dre well you know I'm related to a few people there's a rapper by the name ofele the funky Homo Sapien if you didn't know that was my little cutting that's my little cous Ice Cube was born on June 15th 1969 to Doris and Hosea Jackson his mother Doris was a hotel clerk and custodian while his father josea Jackson was a maschinist and UCLA groundskeeper the rapper grew up with an older brother and a half sister before the world knew him as the well-renowned rapper that he is today Ice Cube or O'Shea Jackson started his early career rapping at school his first ever rap battle took place at school in typewriting class the rapper claimed that another student someone who was an aspiring underground rapper challenged him to a rap battle to everyone's surprise Ice Cube was the winner speaking of which how did he land his stage name it stemmed during a fight with his brother when he threatened to lock him in the freezer and pull him out when he was an ice cube while the young rapper did grow up in a rough part of the city his parents made sure that he'd be on the bus every morning to go to school in the nicer San Fernando Valley area Ice Cube went to the more prestigious George Washington Preparatory High School and while his parents tried to Shield him from the violence that was right outside their doorstep it just wasn't enough the rapper felt his first major loss at the young age of 12 when his halfs sister's life was tragically ended his older brother was also several years older than him and had moved out by the time ice cube was growing up his brother had joined several gangs and while Ice Cube was always fascinated by the idea his parents made sure to keep him as far far away from that life as possible in fact they instilled the need to complete an education very early on it might surprise a lot of the rappers fans to know that besides being a rapper Ice Cube also has a diploma in architectural drafting which he received from Phoenix Institute of Technology in 1988 that's right Ice Cube was already a part of NWA when he started working on his diploma according to him he wanted to have a backup just in case although he wouldn't really need his expertise in architectural drafting after all in 1986 at the age of 16 Ice Cube and his longtime friend sir Jinx started the rap Duo CIA the duo soon became a trio when KD joined later that year the rap group would mostly perform at nightclubs and parties in the LA area and that's where Ice Cube first met Dr Dre the now Fame music producer was working with the world-class wrecking crew in the 80s and called himself Dr Dre master of Mixology CIA and the world class wrecking crew would mostly collaborate on projects together for parties and perform forming at nightclubs the two hit it off immediately and began collaborating on individual projects too Ice Cube helped write and rap for Dre's Cabbage Patch single and Dre helped Ice Cube complete the 12-in record she's a skag in 1986 Dre also produced cia's first single my posi the two continued to work together at Eve after dark a nightclub just a mile away from Compton there ice cube would be called out every time Dre was on the turntables the duo was considered a Class Act especially because of Ice Cube's ability to engage the crowd with several of his remixes and parodies however in one instance while he parody run dmc's my Adidas the club owner had to ask them to keep the lyrics audience friendly while Ice Cube was still gaining momentum in the rap World Dre had established himself as a well-versed rapper and mixologist it didn't take long for another prominent figure in Compton's rap scene Easy E to take notice Easy E had been working on starting his own record label ruthless records for a while however because he was still young the more experienced Steve Yano refused to work with him he did however introduce him to Dre and stated that the two should collaborate together through Dre Ice Cube met EAS e reportedly e e was impressed with the young rapper's vocal ability in songwriting he bought Ice Cube's first single and offered to collaborate together NWA was originally formed with Easy E Dre Ice Cube Arabian Prince MC Ren and DJ yell Dre and DJ yella had already worked together in the world class wrecking crew NWA success in monetary disputes I had the the street knowledge Concept in my head already cuz the NWA record starts off you're now about to witness the strength of Street knowledge so I had that Concept in my head of uh trying to match the streets with the political tone nwa's best remembered today as the face of rap on the west coast with their successful debut album Straight Out of Compton besides being way ahead of its time their debut album also sought to make the members very very rich in hindsight they owed it all to Ice Cube while he might have been the youngest in the group and also the only member from South La and not Compton he was arguably the most talented one Ice Cube was one of the group's main rappers and exclusively wrote all of their songs to give you some context Ice Cube had little to do with nwa's first single Panic Zone that song was more of a collaboration between Dr Dre and DJ yella and was heavily focused on the Electro pop nich while Panic Zone wasn't a failure it wasn't a success either the sales were nothing compared to what the group experienced with Straight Out of Compton in 1988 know it's kind of it's kind of weird to be uh to be associated with Glenn Miller NWA is believed to have introduced the world to gangsta rap or what the group members believed was reality rap three singles from the group's debut album received widespread popularity the title track itself for its references to life in the west coast ganga gangsta for Det detailing how hard it was for the inner city youth to navigate through the Discrimination in the US and probably their most notorious hit ever fact that police Ice Cube later claimed that he was the one who wrote most of the lyrics for the song With a Little Help from the do a rapper and close friend of Dr Dre the song was Notorious enough for the FBI to send a warning letter to the group encouraging them to pull the song from their lineup or else they'd be refused police protection for their concerts NWA refused to take the song out of their lineup or even censor it according to I Cube the police were intimidated by the song's Rising popularity and how it painted a clear picture of what was really going on between the people of the West Coast and the police he also claimed that because they were denied security for their concerts they had to face several setbacks on tour so whatever happened to the warning letter sent to the rap group by the FBI it's framed and on the walls of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame felt easy didn't know the business enough you know this is how I felt because I remember him coming into it he came in you know kind of wideeye what do we do you know I'm ready to do this you know uh so I felt like he didn't he wasn't Savvy enough to pull this without Jerry hel's you know uh coaxing and capitalizing on Straight Out of Compton success the group's founder and the founder of Ruthless records Easy E decided to release his solo album in 1989 MC Ren was the only guest rapper on the album however Ice Cube claimed that he was the one who exclusively wrote most of E's lyrics with some help from the do the rapper admitted that tensions were running High between him and e e and with the group's manager Jerry heler ice cube claimed that he was the one who wrote most of their lyrics however he wasn't being repaid fairly he argued that EAS would often claim that it was his idea to start the rap group in the first place plus he owned ruthless records e made ice cube write most of his lyrics for his debut solo album Easy Does It however when it came time to pay Ice Cube his royalties he reported Ed he was only offered $32,000 from Jerry heler what rarely drove him over the edge was the fact that hel refused to acknowledge not just what e Cube had done for NWA and each of the rappers individual careers but he also claimed that ice cube wasn't even a part of the group in the first place that was the point of no return for Ice Cube not only did he storm out of the recording room for ruthless records but he went out and sued heler for what was rightfully his the case was settled out of court for an undisclosed amount but this was just the beginning of one of the most popular feuds in rap history I mean that day I was probably uh the hell no you know I had my mind made up you know what I mean and nothing more powerful than a made of M so when recounting the immediate aftermath of leaving NWA Ice Cube claimed that he was still friends with other members of the group except for E he claimed that he'd actually got in contact with Dr Dre after he left the group and the two agreed they'd work together on Ice Cube's new album the rapper claimed that the two kept in touch about new projects and collaborations for about a week before Dre called him to say that heler had vetoed any of the group's collaborations with Ice Cube this surprised the rapper because he knew that heler was supported by only one other member of the group Easy E according to Ice Cube his only beef with the rapper at the time was the fact that he chose hel's side and made money rather than sticking by what was right that plus the fact that he made sure to isolate Ice Cube from his frequent collaborators and friends now Ice Cube wasn't the only member of the original NWA who left the group at the height of their success in fact before MC Ren joined the group they had Arabian prince who left right before NWA blew up to focus on his solo career Arabian Prince had the same grievances with heler as Ice Cube however he claimed that because he was more experienced than the then 17-year-old rapper he knew that heler was planning on stiffing them once the group blew up whatever happened to Arabian Prince anyway you know he had left and and basically he was like yo you know you can go out and be a flop like Arabian Prince you know that was his exact quotes you know and I was like damn that ain't going to happen EAS told him his career would tank just like Arabian princes did for context the founding member of NWA lost all rights to the group's projects and received no royalties after he left even for the songs he co-wrote plus none of his solo projects in the 9s Rose to fame Arabian Prince took a long Hiatus from music because of repeatedly low performing singles interestingly he was the only founding member of the group who wasn't inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and wasn't portrayed in the film straight out a Compton one member had already left NWA at the peak of the rap group's Fame Ice Cube would have been the second there was the looming threat of his career ending before it even started especially since his former group held much control over the gangsta rap genre all thanks to the rapper himself to be fair anyway now that Dre and the others were told not to collaborate with Ice Cube on any of his projects things were looking Bleak for Ice Cube's career for a while he later admitted that the ter Turning Point came when Chuck D told him he should focus on his solo career instead Chuck D also helped introduce Ice Cube to Leading rappers who'd made it big in New York together Ice Cube started rapping several verses as a guest rapper on other artist's albums this was his way of declaring that he was no longer a part of NWA continued success and Feud with NWA so I'm telling him the story so I tell him I was like yeah I told everybody I was coming out here to get my record produced in New York and everybody in La laughed at at me like they ain't going to do your record some might believe that ice cube lucked out when he met Chuck D according to the rapper he'd originally flown to New York to meet Sam 7 however despite scheduling an interview he was told that Sam 7 would not be coming serendipitously he met Chuck D on his way out Chuck D then took him with him to Public Enemy records and on that same day they agreed to release Ice Cube's debut album however it's important to remember that none of this would have been possible had Ice Cube not possessed the lyrical genius that he so well known for in 1990 Ice Cube released his debut solo album America's Most Wanted despite the hype surrounding the album claiming that ice cube would diss all of NWA if not at least Easy E and hel on the album the rapper steered clear of dropping any names or even hints in fact talking about it later on Ice Cube claimed that the reason why he decided against dissing anyone from NWA in his debut was because he was still friends with most of his former collaborators and wanted people to recognize him for his solo work while it might not have come with the Scandal everyone had hoped America's Most Wanted Was certified gold in 3 weeks and certified platinum that same year now even though Ice Cube had refrained from naming NWA on his track they decided to still fire back with a disc on their second album 100 miles in running lyrics calling out Ice Cube included references to how they started out as five but one rapper left after he just couldn't take the heat in one music video they also featured the group locked up with an ice cube lookalike but then an officer comes and frees the lookalike keeping the rest of them still locked up this was somewhat of a dual hit at Ice Cube's loyalty to NWA plus the fact that he couldn't practice what he preached ice cubes americ kkk's Most Wanted featured several references to black nationalism and the plight of young black people in the United States with their music video NWA tried to denounce Ice Cube's growing image the direct hit was enough to send Ice Cube into a fury and he decided to fire back with several disses and interviews against his former group in one of the most notable instances Ice Cube went ahead and mocked every member of NWA as well as the dock on Pump It Up hosted by D Barnes according to Dr Dre Ice Cube went too far when he started to mock the dock for his altered voice following a near fatal car crash Dre also started to resent Barnes for the way Pump It Up reportedly manipulated their Feud for views all of this resulted in a violent confrontation in 1991 where Dre assaulted Barnes she later sued him in a multi-million dollar lawsuit that was settled out of court man you know that's very controversial record and I I I believe it deserved a re-release by 1991 NWA started to refer to Ice Cube as Benedict Arnold the infamous traitor during the American Civil War in their lyrics Ice Cube also started to fight back with his songs calling out NWA and referencing how the group couldn't reach the same level of success they did when they had him things came to a head when NWA released turn off the radio which started with a snippet of Ice Cube's debut album and where MC Ren threatened to violent assault Ice Cube in response came one of the most infamous disses of all time no Vaseline the song was even featured by Death Row Records even though Ice Cube released it with Epic Records this was reportedly because of Shug Knight's own Feud with Dr Dre after he left the record label in the 90s following monetary disputes and accusing Knight of corruption still one of the reasons why no Vaseline was so notorious was because of Ice Cube's many references to heler and his Jewish Heritage the lyrics portrayed the members of NWA way specifically Easy E as being PSIs for heler in his money-making scheme the lyrics were also reported for inciting anti-Semitism and invoking violence against the Jewish Community Ice Cube maintained that he never intended to offend the Jewish Community as a whole but wanted to call out heler for his actions when he was still working with NWA reuniting with Dr Dre and continued work who was ice cubes producer depends you know you talking about the one and only Dr Dre in 1991 shortly after the release of nwa's album [ __ ] or life which many believed was wholly Dr Dre's project the rapper announced that he was leaving the group too apparently e had quietly been selling the group's rights to other companies while safeguarding his own that plus the fact that Dre also felt like he wasn't adequately compensated for carrying the group's latest album caused a lot of tension MC Ren reportedly hated E's selfish approach just the same he believed that e had grown power hungry and was F focused on doing right by himself and not the people who helped him get to the top that and the fact that when Dre eventually left ruthless records to work with SH Knight on Death Row Records EAS e made it a point to use homophobic slurs against Dre the rapper wasn't gay but EAS e would routinely post stills of Dre's time at Eve after dark where he was required because of the electropop genre to dress in sequence the animosity was portrayed in Dre's collaboration with Snoop Dog effing with Dre Day Dre also reached out to Ice Cube after he left NWA and the two picked up from where they'd left off ice cube made an appearance on Dre's 1993 let me ride and the two recorded natural-born Killers for Snoop Dogg's 1994 soundtrack murder was the case Ice Cube took his career to new heights by forming Westside Connection alongside fellow west coast rappers Mac 10 and wc Ice Cube created a super group that embodied the essence of West Coast hip-hop their debut album Bow Down released in 1996 was a massive SU success featuring hit singles like the title track and gangsters Make the World Go Round The album's gritty lyrics and heavy beats became Anthems for the West Coast gangsta rap scene solidifying Westside connections place in hip-hop history the group's chemistry was undeniable with each member bringing their unique style and perspective to the table Ice Cube's authoritative delivery Mac 10's aggressive flow and WC's intricate word play complemented each other perfectly creating a Powerhouse Trio that commanded attention despite only releasing two albums together Westside Connection left an indelible mark on the rap game showcasing the camaraderie and creativity that defined West Coast hip hop in the 90s what's Ice Cube up to today yeah that's what's cool you know a lot of a lot of kids you know just knew me for are we there yet you know what I'm saying they just thought I did movies Ice Cube's versatility as an artist was evident as he seamlessly transitioned into acting starring in films like boys and the hood in 1991 Friday in 1995 and barbershop in 2002 despite his booming acting career Ice Cube continued to release music exploring various Styles and collaborating with a diverse range of artists throughout the 2000s and Beyond Ice Cube remained active in both music and film he released several successful albums including laugh now cry later in 2006 and raw footage in 2008 while also producing and starring in numerous movies in addition to his solo work Ice Cube United with his former NWA bandmates for various projects including a reunion tour in 2000 and their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016 today ice Cub's taken sort of a backseat when it comes to producing music of his own he admitted that he enjoys working behind the scenes helping young and aspiring rappers from the West Coast polish their rap skills in fact the rapper sat down for an interview with genius where he talked about upand cominging rappers on the west coast including blueface sedi reason and Rody Rich Ice Cube went over some of their biggest hits and it looked like reason was the only rapper out of the bunch he thought actually had what it took to represent the West Coast the rappers not one to put anyone down though he said that some of his least favorites from the lineup such as blueface probably had what it took to become great rappers later on in their careers too so Ice Cube started at the very top and he's still there today despite his early exit from NWA at the height of the group's success Ice Cube's place in the industry today is one of the the best outranking several of the members who stayed in the group just goes to show that he carried a lot of the weight that's it for today if you enjoyed this video click on the boxes playing on your screen to watch similar content
