if you enjoy reading on your e-reader consider purchasing our ebook living large in a small tin can be thank you we're headed west to the one park where you should never go Yellowstone established in 1872 this place is like another planet a planet of fire forest fires are as common here as muggings in Manhattan a planet of ice at first glance the nearby lake looks inviting but the water is so cold you'd be dead in minutes here's what it looks like most of the year and wait a minute what's that rotten egg smell forget that Yellowstone is basically the center of a huge volcano it hasn't erupted for thousands of years until you see steam coming out of the ground and you get a little nervous nervous you should be the burned remnants of dead trees are called snags beneath the snags are fires that never stop burning this is the devil's playground complete with steaming pits of hydro sulfuric acid these aren't hot springs these are boiling springs in some of these pools temperatures exceed 200 degrees Fahrenheit over the years at least 19 people have claimed Darwin Awards here by taking a dip in these waters feel that nice warm steam sure it feels nice from a distance but I think I'd rather die by grizzly bear that inside one of those things you [Music] due to the proximity of piping hot magma at least half of the world's geysers are here this is by far the most famous good even inside Old Faithful in the fires keep burning [Music] sadly there no shining steel and glass skyscrapers here just an old log building this place hasn't changed much in more than a century but Yellowstone's climate is so unforgiving tourists regretting Lee accept these primitive accommodations but things in perspective were here in August we got down to about 36 degrees last night come out here in the summer wear nice warm jackets at night it's sort of like perfect humidity perfect temperature but it's not just the climate it's not just the incredible diversity of terrain there's also the wildlife in Yellowstone you're always being watched [Music] [Laughter] [Music] and some of these greedy animals don't care about crossing the road they just want to use it for themselves [Music] Callisto National Park bison out for a stroll [Music] then there's the nightlife [Music] thank goodness he did yeah grizzly bears may get all the press but these are the most dangerous wild animals in the park I recall one summer in the early 1990s when a naive tourist lost her left buttock remember kids if you value your fanny it's always best to let sleeping bison lie so we're fishing bridge this is my old haunt back in my wild college days I was an ice cream scooper here really if you want to see Yellowstone from the inside a great way to do it is work here during the summer most of the employees here are either retirees or college students and now there are a number of Eastern European and Russian employees as well the nice thing about working here is you do it for your days off you get two days off a week could be any two days but doesn't really matter because your weekend might fall on a Monday and Tuesday or my fall and Thursday and Friday whatever but then on those two days you could take extended trips throughout the park all right always tip your ice-cream scooper [Music] campgrounds in Yellowstone are a mixed bag there aren't too many full hookup options but that can be a blessing in disguise when you camp in Yellowstone you really feel like you're camping no pool no mini-golf no Wi-Fi just a picnic table a fire pit and a big hole in the ground the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone is tragically underdeveloped there are no River Cruises no neon lights no Ferris wheels and no fireworks shows and yet people still come and struggle to find enjoyment in this old waterfall [Music] [Music] for many years this place was kind of a bubble you could come here to really get away from the rest of the outside world when I worked here in college couldn't get radio here you couldn't get TV here there was no internet there were no cell phones and actually kind of like that I liked coming here and being shut off from the rest of the world Yellowstone is a dangerous place a land of raging fires boiling waters deadly wild animals and rugged unspoiled terrain forget about it you wouldn't like it here available on DVD
