hey everybody welcome back to the channel this is maddie i'm a third year medical student studying in the u.s and one of the co-founders of remnote for a while now i've been learning how to juggle many different responsibilities for my studies clinicals and social life without losing my mind and now of course i've also thrown youtube into the mix because why not i have a lot of fun doing it so maximizing productivity is very important to me efficiency organization and easy accessibility are all the main goals especially when it comes to studying so with this video i'm going to share an integration and transition from my old medical school study system using anki to my new one with rem note which i feel improves my learning in every way i'll first talk about anki and its shortcomings and why that makes remnant a better choice for me and then i'll go over how to make the transition seamlessly and quickly so anki is a flash card program that many students medical or not swear by as the godsend of study apps and for good reason it's awesome the main selling points for students are the active recall and space repetition both of which are the most effective study strategies we also have pre-made decks and plug-ins from the community that you can download and use and probably the most important factor for a poor student it's free but after using anki for several years i came to the conclusion that it was really powerful at just one thing helping me memorize information but it didn't help me connect the dots in my studies synthesize new ideas or extract information easily from lectures or research papers it's really just a flashcard app so if all you need to do is memorize concepts then maybe it's all you need but as a medical student i also need the ability to annotate and read articles lectures and understand how concepts connect with one another in anki flashcards are all standalone bits of information and it's not always clear where your cards fit into the bigger picture well rem note can offer some salvation we designed it to not only include flash cards with space repetition like anki but also to make it a powerful smart notes tool like a hierarchical wikipedia with a pdf annotator revnote offers the perks of anki but also provides so much more in terms of learning potential and knowledge management and the best part is rem note like anki is also free so it's a powerful upgrade and alternative to anki moving from anki to rem note is super easy we've built an anki deck import feature that retains basically all of the original formatting of your cards so you can get started studying right away let's walk it through so first i'm going to take the anki decks that i want to transfer over to rem note and export them as dot apkg files so man i haven't used anki in so long i'm going to take the one matty groves folder which is all the cards that i used to study for step one you can see like there's all the different organ systems here let's take let's take neuro so you're going to export and you also want to include media with the export this includes any pictures any closes anything like that so go and export it and i'm just going to put it in a downloads folder all right and then you can see it says 186 notes were exported so next you're going to need to download the rem note desktop app which you can do for free at www.remnote.io forward slash download and go ahead and download whichever one suits your operating system so i have windows so i'm just going to go ahead and click windows and after it finishes downloading go ahead and install that i already have it installed so i don't need to do that again and i'll leave links for everything in the description as well so once you've downloaded and installed rem note go ahead and fire it up and you'll be brought to this home home page landing page here and you actually don't even need to log into your account or create an account for this system to work what we're going to be doing is creating a local knowledge base which you can see right at the bottom here so basically we're using the computer storage to hold all the cards this way you can have access to all of your study materials offline and online but i would encourage you to log in and make an account if you don't have one already it's free to do that way you can actually log in across multiple devices and sync your data together but let's uh let's just go ahead and create a local knowledge base um right here i'm just going to name this one maddie groves step one because that's what folder i downloaded and then you have to choose a location for the storage so um yeah i'm just gonna choose i'm sure put it in here and then go ahead and create a knowledge base okay and you can tell which knowledge base you're in at the top left of the screen i have another knowledge base in my computer called new as well and you can switch between which knowledge base you're using so now that you've created a knowledge base let's import the cards that we've just exported from before so what you're going to do is go to settings account import um hit the anki tab here and choose a file [Music] now you're just going to find that same file that we exported earlier there's my grow systems neuro open it up and if there are sub decks in that anki deck that you're importing you can choose which ones you want to bring in or i don't have any subjects this is a sub deck so i'm just going to import all 186 cards here go ahead and hit okay and then remnant will do some magic processing to to make this all happen um shouldn't take more than you know a few seconds to a few minutes tops all right and your anki deck has been imported and these are all the cards for monkey and you know if you press q at the top you can start studying through them and you'll see that i can pretty much just pick off uh exactly where i left off in anki um using space repetition as well the media will be downloaded um extra card details as shown here will be brought over as well so let me quickly show you what the actual documents also look like in remnant so click on the documents button on the left sidebar and you can see that all the decks have been imported and even the deck hierarchy from anki is carried over let me show you let me open up anki again right so you can see that though my maddie groves folder split up into systems and then split up into neuro which is which is where i pulled it from and that hierarchy was maintained in rem note see and all the cards from my neuro were carried over and this includes as you can see pictures diagrams tags closes and all of the anki cards that you import will also get tagged with anki card in rem note that way if you make new cards in rem note which i recommend you do they won't get mixed up with the original anki cards that you that you imported and you can go ahead and click that tag if you want and you know all you can expand them here to see all the cars that you brought into as well all right that's pretty much it i hope this was helpful showing you how to move from anki into rem note and now you can enjoy all the cool stuff that remnant has to offer when you won't really interrupt your original workflow at all so if you want to see how i use rem note to build upon the system then definitely check out all of our other videos in our study playlist we go into much more detail there and yeah definitely reach out if you have any questions or just head over to the rem note community our discord channel or our forum we have tons of active members and everyone's super friendly and willing to help each other out so yeah i'll see you guys over there and in another video
