the united states and china are fighting for influence in latin america in the past two decades china has invested more than 160 billion dollars in the region and now counts 20 latin american nations as belt and road initiative members what's even more concerning for the u.s is that china didn't even consider latin america and the caribbean a priority target for china's overseas investments look at some recent comments from u.s senators bill hagerty from tennessee states this is our hemisphere that we're talking about china is literally eating our lunch senator edward markey recently stated china has a plan we don't have a plan can the u.s contain china and become the dominant player in the united states own backyard it's going to be a difficult task so let's break it down in today's video today's video is proudly sponsored by nordpass the best program to help you manage your internet passwords get exclusive access to noorpass best offer at noorpass.com cyrus jansen earlier this month the united states hosted the summit of americas a meeting for all the nations of north central and south america to come together and discuss the most important issues facing the western hemisphere but the united states had other plans most notably the desire to counter beijing's rising influence in the region in 2021 china latin america trade exceeded 400 billion dollars compared to just 295 billion dollars for the united states but before this year's summit began a massive controversy unfolded the united states government decided to ban cuba venezuela and nicaragua from attending the summit why simply because the united states doesn't feel those countries share the same values in democracy to be honest this was an embarrassing and selfish decision the us government made and it immediately backfired in their face remember this is a summit of america's every nation in the region deserves a seat at the table and do you remember when the united states led a diplomatic boycott against the beijing 2022 winter olympics well this time latin american countries use the same action against the united states the most outspoken critic was mexican president obrador who turned down the chance to meet joe biden in los angeles over the decision to ban these three countries from participating leaders from honduras bolivia el salvador and saint vincent and the grenadines all followed mexico's lead instead of hosting a summit whose stated goal was to build a sustainable and resilient and equitable future the only thing that this summit will be remembered for is the countries who weren't allowed to come and also those countries who sent a clear message to the united states that they don't agree with playing political games at important world summits i watched a lot of the speeches from that summit and my favorite came from the prime minister of barbados who looked directly at secretary of state anthony blinken and stated the following it's wrong that cuba and venezuela nicaragua are not here because as you heard from bahamas that we need to speak with those with whom we disagree and we don't only need to narrow cast that's the part of the problem of the world there's too much narrow casting instead of broadcasting there's too much talk in that instead of talking with let me highlight that last sentence once again there's too much talking at instead of talking with in my opinion this is one of the most common errors the us government makes in foreign diplomacy we always want the world to do things our way we selfishly think that whatever is good for america must be good for the world but every country deserves the right to choose their own form of government and every country should have the freedom to choose with whom they do business with in an earlier video entitled the real reason america is scared of china global expansion i highlighted many latin american countries are willing to trade with china as opposed to the united states because the u.s reputation in latin america is one of overthrowing elected leaders installing coup governments and building u.s military bases on foreign soil on the other hand this article from the south china morning post just china's vision china is seemingly everywhere investing in strategic technologies embedding itself in 5g networks and other infrastructure building military alliances working political relationships and joining projects early to gain influence here is an amazing statistic of the 31 countries in this region 25 of them have partnered with china to build much needed infrastructure projects for economic development the summit of americas was supposed to be the united states chance to show their commitment to the latin american region but unfortunately for the u.s the summit was poorly organized and lacked any real tangible benefits for the nations who attended richard house president of the council on foreign relations stated the summit of america's looked to be a debacle a diplomatic owned goal the u.s has no trade proposal no immigration policy and no infrastructure package instead the focus is on who will and will not be there unclear is why we even press for this to happen nicholas cole professor of public diplomacy at the university of southern california stated it's freaking amateur hour it doesn't seem like they the united states prepared with image in mind chinese summits are a very different animal in this article from the south china morning post the authors highlight the difference between u.s and chinese summits the u.s hosts their summits with the goal of making sure that every country who attends respects and embraces america's version of democracy this is an unrealistic goal as it's impossible for every country to embrace the american style of governance in contrast china comes to the table handing out infrastructure projects that southeast asia central asia eastern europe and latin america all desperately need to advance their economies another problem for the u.s government is the lack of money they have to offer at these summits the u.s government always prioritizes projects that back the military industrial complex the best example i can give is the biden administration proposing to send 40 billion us dollars to ukraine for more military supplies the big winner in this deal of course is america's defense contractors meanwhile at the summit of the americas biden offered 617 million dollars for the 31 countries in latin america which is just under 20 million dollars a country in an earlier video i highlighted that joe biden offered 150 million dollars for the 10 countries in the asean alliance this compares to china's 1.5 billion us dollar pledge last november to the same region political science professor at national taiwan university goes on to state biden's main problem is this administration's inability to offer economic goodies to foreign countries for them to happily align with the u.s because global liberalism has been so successfully discredited by trump and detested by the american voters china on the other hand has more leverage ultimately it comes down to a difference in how the us and china operate politically in the west economics are important but as seen in los angeles they are often overshadowed by other issues including migration women's rights inequality and governance in china dissent is not part of the process everyone knows what is expected this is a direct quote from geoffrey moon a former u.s council general in chengdu in america such events have economic dimension but the political dimension is much more important the world knows china is a one-party system and will continue to be for the foreseeable future with president xi jinping set to rule indefinitely the u.s of course is a two-party state and the democrats are expected to lose a lot of power in the upcoming midterm elections will the united states elect a republican president in 2024 all of these factors are important for latin american countries to consider honestly speaking when joe biden took office there was a lot of optimism in latin america when he was vice president joe biden visited the region 16 times unfortunately there is too much talking and not enough action at the 2009 summit of americas joe biden's message to latin american leaders was we genuinely want to be collaborative we genuinely want to engage but notice how he discusses these things everything is we want to do this not we are going to do this and eric farnsworth a former state department official recently shared that latin american region is crying out for economic relief following the pandemic and getting little help from the united states meanwhile china is sitting and waiting with an open checkbook farnsworth went on to state we the united states have got to be more proactive we've got to start offering things that the hemisphere finds attractive moving forward the us and china will continue to battle for more leverage in regions around the world my hope especially for these smaller developing nations is to have the chance to collaborate and partner with both the united states and china and i firmly stand by the words of the barbados prime minister we need to do more talking with than talking at everyone thank you for making it to this point in the
